Behavior

Add generic retained Maintenance and Storage controls to the MQTT package, on the proven low-battery predecessor 354023d, including its documentation follow-up 568203d. Maintenance requires a finite battery reading at or above 50%, acknowledges readiness only after an observed display BUSY cycle, and expires through a watchdog. Storage persists across restarts and uses daily battery-only wakes. The core and API profile have no MQTT dependency; both normal and emergency paths retain explicit OTA image confirmation.

Cancel pending acquisitions, display recovery and old watchdogs when a newer command takes ownership. Use one total recovery budget for oscillating BUSY. Successful OTA cleanup starts no new display refresh. Echoed Maintenance OFF preserves rejection or exit work. Duplicate Storage desired-state commands do not restart pending acquisitions or refreshes.

Verification

  • Command: python3 -B -m unittest discover -s tests -v.
  • Expected result: actual YAML actions and compiled C++ policy lambdas cover admission boundaries, retained command arbitration, pending command races, watchdog renewal, OTA cleanup, daily battery-only wake, low-battery precedence and bounded display recovery.
  • Observed result: all 42 tests pass. The two review regressions cover inherited Storage state when switching to API and fresh sensor acquisition after rejected Maintenance while preserving REJECTED_LOW_BATTERY.
  • Exact local ESPHome 2026.9.0 synthetic API and MQTT configurations both validate and compile to full firmware. Local font and label fixtures replace downloads; no real credentials, network broker, shared builder or device are used. Final API config hash 0xb8ffb189; MQTT 0x26f21cc6.
  • Existing field evidence is reused from the delivered Maintenance/Storage and low-battery work (infra-3rr.8, .11, .25.9). No new fleet operation or induced-failure canary is claimed.

AI assistance

Codex assisted implementation and offline verification. The author inspected the semantic diff and checked that the port includes no fleet inventory, names, calibration changes or private operational tooling.

Walkthrough

Changes

Modes Maintenance et Storage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cycle d’affichage et récupération
examples/multi-device/packages/smart_plant_core.yaml, examples/multi-device/packages/smart_plant_profile_api.yaml
examples/multi-device/packages/smart_plant_profile_mqtt.yaml, examples/multi-device/README.md
tests/display_automation.py, tests/test_maintenance_storage.py, tests/test_display_recovery.py, tests/test_display_recovery_budget.py, tests/test_low_battery.py

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to cb250

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to cb250

The new controls give authorized command senders influence over device availability and measurement schedules. Battery admission, explicit readiness acknowledgment, watchdog expiry, and bounded display recovery limit failures. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but deployed command permissions and behavior during interrupted updates or sensor failures remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A sender permitted to publish to the new command topics can influence awake time, display work, and persistent measurement suppression on subscribing devices. Exposure follows command-topic permissions and prefix sharing; the supplied configuration does not establish fleet-wide scope. Topic publication alone does not demonstrate firmware-upload authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — MQTT delivery now crosses into device lifecycle authority, while the profile retains its existing configurable broker credentials. The inspected handlers consume desired state without an additional sender identity check. Effective publisher authorization therefore depends on broker policy, which was not supplied.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A refresh that never asserts BUSY does not receive Maintenance ON acknowledgment. Its failure branch proceeds to sleep handling, and the offline regression checks eventual sleep. Battery tests cover unavailable and nonfinite initial readings, but do not establish invalidation of an older finite reading after an update failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Document and validate per-device broker permissions that separate telemetry readers from command publishers. The new retained command topics should be treated as lifecycle-control authority, not merely sensor data.
