fix(SPDX): improve cross-platform output and data handling - #321
Improve package/file metadata, dependency relationships, and LicenseRef handling.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
SPDX reports can now be generated on Windows and macOS, as well as other supported platforms.
Export reports in JSON, YAML, XML, or tag format. Reports include package and file relationships, scan details, license information, and checksum data.
Bug Fixes
SPDX exports now validate completed reports and report failures when required tools are unavailable or report generation encounters an error.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
SPDX output no longer rejects Windows or Darwin. The generator builds and validates SPDX 2.3 documents from dependency, source, binary, and OCI scan data, then supports TAG, JSON, YAML, and XML output.
Changes: Cross-platform SPDX generation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Enable SPDX output across platforms pyproject.toml, requirements-dev.txt, src/fosslight_util/output_format.py
The spdx-tools dependency is unconditional. SPDX output dispatch invokes write_spdx without a platform check.
Build and serialize SPDX documents src/fosslight_util/oss_item.py, src/fosslight_util/write_spdx.py
OssItem initializes license_texts. write_spdx builds SPDX packages, files, relationships, licenses, and metadata. It validates documents before writing and removes partial output after exceptions.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 370b6
Some malformed URLs can appear in SPDX output. The change is otherwise mergeable with this limitation understood.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8e192
The change expands local SPDX export without identifying a new remotely exposed service or privilege boundary. Validation precedes output creation, and document state is isolated per export. Remaining uncertainty concerns downstream contract compatibility, external serializer behavior, and how applications supply scan data and output paths.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The directly evidenced sensitive operations are reading scan-file paths for checksums and writing or removing the caller-selected output file, under the exporting process's filesystem permissions. The inspected scope does not establish a remote ingress, tenant boundary, or additional execution privilege.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Scan metadata is converted into structured SPDX model objects and validated before reaching the serializers. Homepage and download-location strings are assigned as metadata in the inspected writer path; this path does not use those values as network-fetch destinations.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Per-export mutable state limits interference between generated documents, and validation rejection occurs before destination creation. Output publication remains path-based rather than transactional, so this isolation does not establish safety for concurrent writes to the same destination.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If consumers require preservation of an existing SBOM through failed or interrupted exports, consider temporary-file serialization followed by atomic replacement and an explicit same-destination concurrency policy. This addresses a pre-existing publication limitation, not an established new vulnerability.

- Around line 339-340: Normalize the TLSH value before validation by updating
the assignment to tlsh near the _TLSH_PATTERN.fullmatch call: convert missing or
null values to an empty string and strip surrounding whitespace, matching the
existing write_cyclonedx handling. Keep the conditional comment generation
unchanged.
- Around line 136-140: Update the license handling around registry.licenses and
package.license_declared to remove SpdxNone and SpdxNoAssertion when real
license expressions are present, while retaining the special value when it is
the sole entry; then build compound expressions only from the filtered licenses.
- Line 310: Handle missing spdx-tools distribution metadata in the write_spdx
creator construction: catch PackageNotFoundError from
package_version('spdx-tools'), use “unknown” as the cosmetic fallback version,
and still append the TOOL Actor so SPDX generation continues.

- Line 132: Normalize the homepage value before constructing the Package,
alongside the existing name, version, and copyright normalization: convert "-"
to an empty value and map "NONE" and "NOASSERTION" to SpdxNone() and
SpdxNoAssertion(). Pass the normalized homepage instead of oss_item.homepage in
the Package construction.
- Line 68: Update write_spdx to reject any spdx_version other than '2.3' before
generating output, returning the established failure tuple with a clear
unsupported-version message; preserve the existing generation path for '2.3' and
the forwarding behavior in write_output_file.
