What was asked

Update the genlayernode skill to the new node setup (node v0.6, Testnet Bradbury Phase 2, docs PR genlayerlabs/genlayer-docs#705), so that from a bare VM the skill provisions and installs a node; test it as a full node on rc.1 (downloaded) and rc.2 (pre-release build from genlayer-node), and fix issues in the node before rc.2 instead of working around them in the skill.

Update: rc.2 will not be released. The skill now targets the published v0.6.0-rc.1; everything that only rc.2 does is kept on branch feat/genlayernode-v06-rc2 (8677325) to add with the next release. Keep the existing skill: change only what a bug fix, a release change or an install-process change requires.

Rule applied to every change

Each changed hunk is one of:

  • B — bug fix (wrong or broken before, independent of v0.6)
  • R — release change (node v0.6 / rc.2 behaviour, release package)
  • I — install-process / network change (docs PR 705, Bradbury Phase 2)
  • U — requested in this task (provision from a bare VM; full node mode)

Unjustified rewording made during the work was reverted to the main text before this commit.

Changes and why

Area Change Why
Network Network values stay per-deployment (RPC/WS URLs, provider key, consensus address, chain id, genesis, manifest): taken from the network's docs section or, for your own network, from its operator — as #36 made the skill generic. Testnet Bradbury appears only as a labelled example; CLI examples use --network testnet-bradbury (was testnet-asimov, dropped from the docs) I
Network Testnet Bradbury RPC/WebSocket host rpc.testnet-chain.genlayer.com (was the Conduit host name), as in genlayer-docs#705 I (checked: eth_chainId 4221; WebSocket 401 without the key, 101 with it)
Network consensus.chainid, consensus.manifestpath + download bradbury.protocol-manifest.json R (node refuses to start without them)
Network RPC provider API key GENLAYERNODE_ROLLUP_GENLAYERCHAINRPCKEY in .env when the provider needs one, never in URLs R / I (Testnet Bradbury: Conduit WebSocket returns 401 without it; the node exits at start, also in full mode)
Paths third_party/genvm → opt/genvm/<genvm ver> (rc.1: v0.6.0-rc10, written by install.sh), opt symlink R
Data Shared data/ per minor line (genvm.db, ops.db, keystore) instead of a genlayer.db link R (v0.6 renames genlayer.db→genvm.db; ops.db must persist; confirmed with genlayer-node)
Download cosign verify-blob + sha256sum -c, stop on 404, install with release install.sh I
Prerequisites Python 3.10+, cosign; Node.js only where the CLI runs R / I
Prerequisites Install missing packages (after confirmation); genlayer service user U / I (docs: node user not in the docker group)
Prerequisites python3 -c 'import venv, ensurepip' instead of python3 -m venv --help B (the old check passes without python3-venv; seen on the VM)
Prerequisites curl … get.docker.com | env -u VERSION sh B (the script reads $VERSION as the Docker version; with the node VERSION set it fails — seen on the VM)
Secrets No --password on command lines; GENLAYERNODE_PASSWORD from EnvironmentFile; keystore installed as an encrypted file I (docs)
Secrets Masking sed masks passwords fully; .env checks print names only B (old commands printed key/password values)
Secrets Monitoring credential test passes credentials on stdin (curl -K -) B (credentials on the command line)
systemd User=genlayer, ExecStart … run -c config.yaml, DOCKER_HOST proxy, ExecStartPost=-+… I / R
WebDriver Bounded wait (3 min) instead of until … done B (hung forever when compose failed — seen on the VM)
WebDriver sudo docker compose follows from .env mode 600 (compose reads .env)
Doctor set -a; . ./.env as service user; no --expected-consensus-address / -N B (plain source does not export) / R (flags removed in v0.6)
Health status: healthy and sync metrics instead of status: up / .checks.validating; rc.1 reports an empty network label, so the network is confirmed by doctor's consensus admission check R (/health changed in v0.6)
Docker Run from version dir with -p genlayer-node, chown 10001, doctor in the container; rc.1 override: GENVM_VERSION in .env, manifest mount, LLM config at /app/opt/genvm/<GENVM_VERSION>/config/ R (rc.1 compose has no fixed project name — WebDriver names conflicted on a fresh Docker install — and mounts neither the manifest nor the LLM config)
rc.1 compose NODE_PASSWORD must be non-empty for every docker compose command (validator: export passphrase; full node: any value) + sharp edge compose-node-password-empty R (rc.1 ${NODE_PASSWORD:?} guard; fixed in genlayer-node#2271, not released)
Monitoring rc.1 .env.example: no NETWORK_NAME, METRICS_SCRAPE_INTERVAL=15s (kept as on main) R
Staking CLI version from the Phase 2 announcement, deployed self-stake minimum, proof of possession, 9-step wizard, positional validator-info/prime/set-identity/set-operator I / R (CLI)
Update Prepare/switch/rollback for v0.6 (install.sh, keep new root_dir, shared data); v0.5→v0.6 is a fresh install R / I
Sharp edges New: release verification, setup in final dir, manifest, Conduit key, key-in-URL, node user/docker group, one writer on shared data, Docker LLM config path, uid 10001, v0.5→v0.6 R / I
Validations Python 3.10, venv, cosign, manifest, RPC key, healthy status, RPC URL from config.yaml; single-line commands R / B (fallback parser can't read \" / block scalars)
index.html Steps 1–5 and the GEN/gas rows R / I
Monitoring VALIDATOR_NAME example edgars-asimov → my-validator-1 (generic) U
Review fixes (CodeRabbit) keystore upload to /tmp + sudo install; download into a /tmp dir the service user can read; update stops if OLD_VERSION can't be resolved or data/ is a real dir; skill.yaml links as genlayer; Docker→systemd ownership note; NODE_ID row B
Plugin version 1.0.1 → 1.1.0 (claude + codex manifests) R (so installed copies pick up the update; taken from #44)
Download Verification stops the install on any failure (cosign, tarball listed in SHA256SUMS, sha256sum -c); on failure install.sh is removed so a pasted block cannot install B (--ignore-missing skipped an unlisted tarball; a failed check did not stop the next lines)
Keystore Install stops if keystore/operator.json exists B (keystore is shared by all v0.6.x; a re-run overwrote the only operator key; from #44)
Monitoring ExecStartPost=-+… (was -); Grafana URLs labelled as an example B (service user is not in the docker group: restart failed silently; text said "use the Foundation's values")
Compose Compose v2.24+ check + sharp edge compose-too-old R (release docker-compose.yaml uses env_file: required: false)
Staking set-operator --operator-account (new operator's proof of possession, CLI v0.40.0-rc.3+); live note → status pending in genlayer staking validators R (genlayer-cli setOperator.ts; live removed in genlayer-cli#427 and never meant deposit activation)
collaboration.yaml Node.js v20+ only on the CLI machine, Python 3.10+, ensurepip check, env -u VERSION, cosign, pinned CLI B (contradicted the other files)

Test evidence (fresh AWS VMs, Ubuntu 24.04, c6a.2xlarge, procedure blocks run verbatim)

Test Result
rc.1 final (1e54ab7), bare VM → binary full node (GCS download, cosign + sha256sum, install.sh) healthy, synced 47930→48637, blocks_behind 0; doctor all green (GenVM Binaries: Found at ./opt/genvm/v0.6.0-rc10)
rc.1 final, same node switched to Docker (-p genlayer-node, rc.1 override) healthy, synced, blocks_behind 0; doctor in the container all green (manifest admission, openrouter); GENVM_VERSION not duplicated on re-run
rc.1 sharp edge compose-node-password-empty docker compose config -q with empty NODE_PASSWORD → required variable NODE_PASSWORD is missing a value
rc.1 first Docker run (before 1e54ab7) found: WebDriver container name conflict (no project name in rc.1 compose) and an unprivileged grep on the mode-600 .env → both fixed
rc.1 full node, binary/systemd (GCS download + cosign) synced; found release defects → reported (see below)
rc.2 full node, binary/systemd (now on branch feat/genlayernode-v06-rc2) healthy, network=bradbury-phase2, synced 47930→48637, blocks_behind 0; doctor all green
rc.2 full node, Docker same; doctor in container green with the LLM config mount
Update rc.2 → rc.2b + rollback (rc.2 branch; on rc.1 no newer version exists to update to) no resync, shared data kept, switch/rollback healthy
Doctor on new version while old runs old node stays healthy
Re-run of the final (original-structure) install procedure on a fresh VM binary full node healthy, synced; .env from .env.example as EnvironmentFile
validations.yaml on the VMs (real runner, fallback parser) all changed checks pass; remaining failures are expected (local-machine checks, monitoring off) or pre-existing
New verify / Compose / keystore logic (8677325) mock test: cosign fail, unlisted tarball, tampered tarball each stop and remove install.sh; Compose check rejects <2.24, passes on the VM (Compose 5.6.0); GNU sha256sum format matches; keystore guard stops a second install

Secrets (Conduit + LLM key) were moved file-to-file and never printed.

Node issues found and fixed in the node

The fixes below are not in a release (rc.2 is not released), so the skill documents the rc.1 behaviour instead (NODE_PASSWORD, -p genlayer-node, Docker override). The rc.2 branch drops those again.

  • genlayerlabs/genlayer-node#2271 (merged): NODE_PASSWORD :? guard broke the WebDriver-only and full-node compose paths.
  • genlayerlabs/genlayer-node#2272 (open): compose name: genlayer-node (Docker updates from a new dir), install.sh keeps opt/genvm/current, no macOS ._ files in the package.
  • rc.1 only: empty network label (fixed in rc.2), root_dir names v0.6.0-rc1 (install.sh corrects it).
  • Known, not a blocker: one false ERR … chain.sync at Docker start (recovers in 0.66 s).

Docs kept in sync

PR #44

Compared file by file with #44 (same goal, made without the test context). Taken into this PR: the version bump and the keystore guard. Not taken: hard-coded Bradbury defaults (chain id, consensus address, genesis in templates; Bradbury check in on_stop), scripts/check-network.mjs + bradbury-phase-2.md + host-prerequisites.md (Bradbury-only, need Node.js on the server, repeat the node's own manifest check and doctor), and removals/rewordings of still-correct text.

Not done / open

  • Validator mode is not tested yet. The qualified Phase 2 CLI is now published (genlayer@0.40.0-rc.4, npm tag rc) and matches the skill (no live, selfStakePendingDeposits, --operator-account, positional validator-info/prime/set-identity/set-operator, set-identity by the operator, 9-step wizard). The test needs a funded owner account on Testnet Bradbury (deployed self-stake minimum + gas).
  • https://docs.genlayer.com/validators/bradbury.protocol-manifest.json is 404 until docs PR 705 merges (tests used the preview URL, same SHA256).
  • Pre-existing, unchanged: genlayernode has no Stop hook (audit error on main too — a Stop hook that runs server checks on the operator's machine would always fail); config-valid-yaml / alloy-bind-mount-fresh validations do not work with the runner's fallback parser; docs/skills/REFERENCE.md does not exist on main.
  • Commit is not signed (no signing key configured here); main requires signatures — a squash merge is signed by GitHub.

Operational readiness

  • Security: no new external surface; secrets only in mode-600 .env, never on command lines or in output; release signature verified with cosign.
  • Diagnosability: doctor, /health (status, network), genlayer_node_synced / blocks_behind.
  • Compatibility / back-out: skill docs only; revert this commit to return to the previous skill. Older v0.5 nodes are not updated in place (documented).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Update the genlayernode skill for node v0.6 on Testnet Bradbury Phase 2
(docs PR genlayer-docs#705), keeping the existing structure and wording
except where a release change, an install-process change or a bug fix
requires it. Tested end to end on fresh AWS VMs (full node, binary and
Docker, rc.1 and rc.2, update + rollback).

The updated setup guide could install a node or CLI version the network has not approved. It also has a post-start Alloy restart that silently fails, and a validation check that wrongly fails for providers without an RPC key. Pin the approved versions and fix these procedure gaps before merging.

🟠 Major · setup-symlinks no longer matches SKILL.md and breaks the update procedure. · skill.yaml:519-527

plugins/genlayernode/skills/genlayernode/skill.yaml:519-527
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

setup-symlinks no longer matches SKILL.md and breaks the update procedure.

These commands create absolute links (for example, bin -> /opt/genlayer-node/v0.6.0/bin) and run without sudo -u genlayer. SKILL.md and common-procedures.md create relative links (bin -> v0.6.0/bin) as genlayer and include alloy-healthcheck.sh. This causes three problems:

  • /opt/genlayer-node is owned by genlayer, so the plain ln -sfn fails for a non-root user.
  • alloy-healthcheck.sh is not linked.
  • update-procedure.md line 64 computes OLD_VERSION=$(readlink /opt/genlayer-node/bin | cut -d/ -f1). For an absolute link, the result is an empty string. A later rollback then runs ln -sfn /bin bin.

The same absolute commands appear in the "Download node software" procedure at lines 1104-1111. Use the loop from SKILL.md in both places.

♻️ Proposed fix
- - "ln -sfn /opt/genlayer-node/${VERSION}/bin /opt/genlayer-node/bin"
- - "ln -sfn /opt/genlayer-node/${VERSION}/opt /opt/genlayer-node/opt"
- ...
+      - "cd /opt/genlayer-node && for p in bin opt configs data docker-compose.yaml alloy-config.river alloy-healthcheck.sh genvm-module-web-docker.yaml .env; do sudo -u genlayer ln -sfn ${VERSION}/$p $p; done"

As per coding guidelines: "Keep SKILL.md and skill.yaml in sync - they describe the same procedure".

plugins/genlayernode/skills/genlayernode/skill.yaml:1053-1058
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The "Latest version" option installs the newest listed release, which may not be approved.

SKILL.md line 284 and common-procedures.md lines 8-10 now say: use the version approved for Bradbury Phase 2, because the newest listed release may not be approved yet. This option still runs sort -Vr | head -1 and names the result the recommended default. That command can select an unapproved -rc build. The listing commands at lines 159, 500 and 1058 also still use the old sort -ru. SKILL.md line 497 fixed that sort for prereleases. Change the option so it asks for the approved version from the announcement, and use the same sort as SKILL.md.

As per coding guidelines: "Keep SKILL.md and skill.yaml in sync - they describe the same procedure".

- Network values (RPC/WS URLs, provider key, consensus address, chain id,
genesis, protocol manifest) are per-deployment again, taken from the
network's docs section or the network operator; Testnet Bradbury stays
only as a labelled example (restores the generic text of #36).
- CodeRabbit findings (all from the genlayer ownership / shared data
changes): keystore upload to /tmp then sudo install; SKILL.md download
into a /tmp dir the service user can read; update-procedure stops when
OLD_VERSION cannot be resolved or data/ is a real directory; skill.yaml
  symlink lines run as genlayer; Docker->systemd ownership note;
monitoring NODE_ID row matches the full-node note.

Review rate limited.

Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.

rc.2-only content is kept on branch feat/genlayernode-v06-rc2.

- rc.1 compose refuses every docker compose command (also the WebDriver of a
binary node) while NODE_PASSWORD is empty: document it in .env, the .env
template and a new sharp edge (validator = export passphrase; full node =
  any non-empty value)
- rc.1 compose has no fixed project name: compose commands run from the
version directory use -p genlayer-node (the WebDriver container names
conflicted on a fresh Docker install; also the Docker update step)
- rc.1 Docker override: GENVM_VERSION in .env (sudo grep: .env is mode 600),
manifest mount (not mounted by rc.1 compose) and LLM config at
  /app/opt/genvm/<GENVM_VERSION>/config/
- GenVM path ./opt/genvm/v0.6.0-rc10 (rc.1 has no opt/genvm/current)
- /health: rc.1 reports an empty network label; confirm the network with
  doctor's consensus admission check
- monitoring: rc.1 .env.example has no NETWORK_NAME and scrapes every 15s

Tested on a fresh VM with the published rc.1 (GCS + cosign): binary and
Docker full node healthy, synced to the chain head, doctor all green.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

The "latest" version command can select an unapproved release.

sort -Vr | head -1 picks the highest listed version. SKILL.md Line 286 says "latest" must be the network-approved release, because the most recent listed release may not be approved. This command contradicts that rule. It can install an unapproved or wrong-network release. Ask for the approved version, or remove this option.

Update the Step 4 example to v0.6 and the verified install flow.

The example still shows v0.4.4, a plain tarball download, and extraction. The Required Start Message above now says to verify with cosign and run install.sh. The example output will mislead the agent and the user.

plugins/genlayernode/skills/genlayernode/common-procedures.md:326-328
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Run the Alloy restart through the host Docker socket.

The service sets DOCKER_HOST for its executed processes, so ExecStartPost inherits the read-only proxy address. The restart request cannot use that proxy. The + prefix grants root privileges but does not change the endpoint, and || true hides the failed restart. Alloy can therefore retain the stale log mount after an upgrade. Systemd documents the environment inheritance and the privilege effect of +. (freedesktop.org)

Unset DOCKER_HOST for the restart command, or point that command at the host Docker socket. Apply the same correction to install-procedure.md Lines 352-354.

Require the target archive to exist before accepting its checksum.

The wget status is not chained to the verification block. If the archive is missing but the checksum file is present, --ignore-missing skips the archive and the verification can succeed. Add an explicit existence check.

Do not hard-code the rc.1 GenVM root_dir in the generic template.

./opt/genvm/v0.6.0-rc10 is correct only for rc.1. The comment says to keep the value install.sh wrote. A literal in the template can point a later release at a missing GenVM directory. Use a placeholder such as ${GENVM_ROOT_DIR}, taken from the installed config.yaml.

Set CLI_VERSION before the install command.

The adjacent command uses ${CLI_VERSION}, but this procedure does not set it. In a fresh shell, the command loses its version pin, so npm can install a CLI other than the network-qualified release. Set the variable from the release announcement or use the explicit version. npm’s package parser treats an empty version spec as *. (docs.npmjs.com)

rpc-key-configured fails when the provider needs no key, and it needs sudo.

The check fails for any empty key. SKILL.md says the key is needed only "if your network's RPC provider needs one". Validation then fails for networks without a key. The check also calls sudo (non-interactive runs can hang or fail) and is not in on_warn. Add it to on_warn or make it advisory.
