Documentation-only head: the feature guide now distinguishes the pinned legacy integration from the unqualified shared Go foundation. Runtime code remains at 55faa8704; the earlier 29-test/core-build evidence below belongs to that source revision, not a fresh run on this documentation head. Actual module pins remain IG 87a796fe9780 and Cilium v0.22.0, not IG dabee7d08. Temporary compatibility checks do not change those pins. Shared accepted-generation publication/reload, native withdrawal integration, Ready, complete worker qualification and kernel qualification remain open. No fresh all-green CI claim is made for this head.
Audit contract supersession — 2026-10-30: operational audit is best effort: reload, tracking, resource or structural faults may block audit-only workloads. Audit evaluation must still not intentionally deny audited decisions or evaluator unknown/error results, grant uncertain roles, or override earlier LSM denials. Enforcement remains fail-closed. Precommit refusal retains last-good state and requires truthful failure/NotReady; admission reopens only after safe cleanup. Postcommit recovery resumes the committed generation rather than rolling back. This supersedes any historical wording below that could imply uninterrupted operational-audit admission.
Provider hardening is published: six signed-off commits isolate runtime-evidence context ownership, bound decoding and overlay splitting, expose retained shared-container identity, cover canonical identity rejection, and clarify role/evidence limits. Readonly core builds and 29 explicitly selected ordinary unit tests passed within that validation scope; this is not full runtime or kernel qualification.
Kernel-fixture isolation is published: two further signed-off commits separate default test initialization from the real-kernel fixture and document its explicit opt-in. The kernel test requires Linux, the sandboxpolicy_kernel build tag, and IG_FULL_BACKEND_KERNEL_TEST=1. The tag admits kernel-fixture initialization; it is not an initialization-free compile-only safety switch. No tagged kernel tests were run. Pure-Go FixturePlan coverage remains in the default test build and is not native proof.
Dependency and qualification gates remain: the IG pin is still 87a796fe9780. A coherent future shared-runtime IG revision, qualified supported matrix, and downstream/private OTel integration validation remain pending. IG e722e2aff publishes the accepted audit documentation and legacy mocked Go protocol regression, replacing the obsolete strict-admission requirement; this consumer does not yet select that revision. It is not ABI3/shared/native/kernel qualification. Provider hardening does not establish shared-node readiness or introduce helper exemptions.
Downstream provider consumption is published: the downstream consumer now selects public node-agent v0.3.294-0.20261030181130-55faa8704fd9, while IG stays at 87a796fe9780 and Cilium at v0.22.0. This consumes provider hardening, not the unfinished shared-runtime implementation or a native qualification. Existing exec-event reuse and backend-field contracts in the preserved description below are unchanged.
This PR remains OPEN/non-draft; that flag is not a merge-readiness claim. Do not bypass the stacked dependency/merge guard. All merges remain with the maintainer, and the historical implementation/evidence notes below must not be read as qualification of the unfinished shared-node work.
Overview
Add opt-in SandboxPolicy execution enforcement to the public node-agent:
Watch SandboxPolicy, ClusterSandboxPolicy and SandboxPolicyClasses, resolve selectors/classes and read-only ContainerProfile imports, and write bounded per-node status.
Wire the persistent full enforce_exec owner: live policy reload without restarting role state, strict runtime bindings, last-good retention, and honest NotReady/protection-unconfirmed reporting.
Export public verdict/enrichment hooks and bounded loss diagnostics for later private OTel integration. This does not implement the private exporter.
Add trusted containerd image/root/namespace admission, exact identity fences, nonpublishing attestation during discovery outages, and safe abort/retirement/cleanup.
Stacked dependency / do not merge yet: depends on kubescape/inspektor-gadget#15 and the SandboxPolicy API in kubescape/storage#428. The exact published IG revision is pinned; the existing merge guard intentionally rejects an unmerged IG dependency. Do not bypass it—merge IG and align the consumer pin first.
Safety and supported environment
Disabled by default. Enabling requires an explicit administrator-trusted image/archive, containerd socket and writable control root. There is no legacy/path-only fallback and no inferred runtime-helper exemption. Unsupported policies or unreliable bindings are refused; healthy last-good enforcement is retained where it can be freshly confirmed.
The experimentally proven matrix is amd64, the documented pinned Linux 7.3 test kernel/BTF, containerd 1.7.30 / runc 1.3.4, and the constrained root, seccomp, capability, mount and device-policy configuration. This is not generic distribution/arm64/production compatibility. Strict runtime helpers can quarantine a binding; new policy revisions do not silently redeem unknown lineage.
No chart version/RBAC changes, parent aggregate status writer, private-agent dependency, or non-exec enforcement are included.
How to test
Standalone validation, without a development workspace:
GOWORK=off GOFLAGS=-mod=readonly go test -race ./pkg/sandboxpolicy/... ./pkg/config ./pkg/utils -count=1
GOWORK=off GOFLAGS=-mod=readonly go vet ./pkg/sandboxpolicy/... ./pkg/config ./pkg/utils
GOWORK=off GOFLAGS=-mod=readonly go test ./cmd -run '^$'
These pass on the latest main base. A CGO-disabled node-agent binary build also passed.
The opt-in privileged fixture is TestFullBackendContainerdKernel; run it only on an explicitly selected disposable supported-kernel machine, following docs/features/sandbox-policy.md and the fixture's provisioning contract. The matching IG owner includes a reproducible Clang 21.1.8/pinned-BTF OCI archive builder.
Isolated real-kernel evidence
Real CRI RunPodSandbox/CreateContainer/StartContainer and the production ORAS archive/native backend path passed:
13 actual target paths and compound exec predicates under default deny;
the full 256-rule boundary, including match bitmap bit 255; safe rejection of 257 rules;
actual enforce/audit/allow verdict delivery, role inheritance and same-owner reload;
containerd stop/start recovery without changing successful UID epochs or losing last-good enforcement;
actual strict CRI-helper refusal, preserved quarantine, zero stranded admissions, and successful withdrawal;
kernel counter snapshots retained after verified detach.
Final combined run: PASS 7.56s; repeat runs: PASS 8.35s / 9.23s / 9.24s. All test VM/key/tag resources were deleted and API absence verified. This fixture does not run a kubelet/API server; controller/watch/status behavior has separate client-backed and cross-layer regression tests.
Review notes
Important regression boundaries include exact PID/mount/cgroup/pod identity reuse, failed retirement, stale withdrawal, configuration/discovery outages, pending-candidate attestation versus publication, superseded uncommitted abort, committed-finalization retry, transport recovery, and explicit kernel/userspace telemetry loss.
The IG pin is v0.0.0-20261027133411-87a796fe9780, which includes IG main through #16 and preserves its ordinary-symbol streaming fix, plus reviewed canonical-prefix and cancellable-attachment fixes. Merge ownership remains with the maintainer; this PR does not merge or override checks in either repository.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added experimental, opt-in sandbox policy enforcement for Kubernetes workloads, supporting audit and enforce modes.
Added per-node policy status and execution authorization events to surface enforcement outcomes.
Policies can import supported execution paths from completed container profiles.
Documentation
Added guidance on prerequisites, configuration limits, supported environments, and verification boundaries.
Important
Enforcement is disabled by default and requires explicit runtime configuration. Unsupported environments or policy configurations may be rejected; protection may be reported as unconfirmed rather than falling back to a legacy backend.
Consumer validation also fixed telemetry shutdown: kernel-counter sampling now honors cancellation while waiting for a busy backend mutex, without detached waiter goroutines. Cancellation/deadline regressions and existing snapshot tests pass under the race detector. This bounds backend-lock waiting, not arbitrary native syscall duration.
The reviewed IG matrix extension preserves the original exact BTF and additionally admits only 759807546ae2feaf616dc65c73167439867bb393dc468a4bd39c0ab1bc267d51, with full isolated upstream predicate/128-path/persistent OCI/actual CRI/hugetlb-exec proof. Provenance and evidence. Private Kubernetes/OTLP proof remains separate and pending.
Internal event naming update (1769ac13)
The public authorization wrapper is now sandboxpolicy.ExecVerdictEvent, constructed by NewExecVerdictEvent, and dispatched under utils.ExecAuthorizationEventType (execAuthorization). It deliberately does not implement the ordinary utils.ExecEvent observation interface. This names the existing exec-specific contract explicitly; the Verdict payload and enforcement behavior are unchanged.
Internal dispatch names are not OTEL wire names. Private #747 maps authorization to the shared exec / R-PROC-1 wire family with explicit authorization phase; this public rename does not alter that wire contract. Source comments and feature documentation describe how to add a second enforcement gadget: use operation-specific facts/events/dispatch and extract only metadata proven common to both, rather than preemptively introducing a generic verdict abstraction.
Focused public sandboxpolicy/utils race tests, vet, cmd compilation and changed-line lint (0 issues) passed. This naming change has not rerun the historical live-kernel proof; its original evidence anchors remain unchanged.
Watch the SandboxPolicy CRDs, resolve selected exec plans and publish them through the full persistent enforce_exec backend. Preserve strict runtime identity, successful role epochs, healthy last-good enforcement and explicit unsupported/uncertain status.
Add public verdict hooks, trusted containerd admission, bounded telemetry, lifecycle regressions and disposable real-kernel fixtures. Pin the published IG implementation; the existing unmerged-dependency guard remains in force. Private OTel integration and chart changes are out of scope.

Changes: Sandbox policy enforcement
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Configuration, contracts, and compilation pkg/config/*, pkg/sandboxpolicy/types.go, pkg/sandboxpolicy/compiler.go, pkg/sandboxpolicy/integration/sources.go, go.mod, pkg/utils/events.go
Adds sandbox-policy configuration and public contracts. The compiler validates policies, resolves supported exec rules, expands path classes, and produces a revision. The profile resolver imports supported exec paths from complete profiles.
Binding discovery and reconciliation pkg/sandboxpolicy/controller.go, pkg/sandboxpolicy/integration/bindings.go, pkg/sandboxpolicy/status.go, pkg/sandboxpolicy/integration/readiness.go
Adds Kubernetes-to-runtime binding snapshots and controller reconciliation. Failed snapshots retain prior authoritative state. Status reports track readiness, cleanup, and protection uncertainty.
Trusted runtime and image evidence pkg/sandboxpolicy/igbackend/identity_linux.go, pkg/sandboxpolicy/igbackend/imageevidence.go, pkg/sandboxpolicy/igbackend/imageindex.go, pkg/sandboxpolicy/igbackend/fulllease_linux.go
Adds Linux identity leases and containerd evidence checks for workload identity, image layers, mounts, and host namespaces. The implementation bounds and rechecks evidence before accepting a full binding lease.
Adds legacy and full enforcement backends, native runtime adapters, per-binding ownership, replacement and withdrawal handling, health attestation, cleanup retries, and kernel event statistics.
Adds full-policy compilation, generation-specific decoders, and verdict validation and attribution. Tests and a C fixture cover the opt-in kernel enforcement flow.
Service startup, readiness, and verdict export pkg/sandboxpolicy/exporter.go, pkg/sandboxpolicy/integration/service.go, cmd/main.go, docs/features/sandbox-policy.md, pkg/sandboxpolicy/igbackend/README.md
Adds service startup and shutdown wiring, refresh handling, readiness barriers for changing inputs, and bounded best-effort verdict delivery. Documentation describes configuration, behavior, and verification boundaries.
The dependency merge gate remains unsatisfied. Resolve it before merging, and address the remaining exporter, documentation, and device-admission risks.

Explanation
The title "feat(sandboxpolicy): add opt-in persistent exec enforcement" matches the main change. The PR adds an opt-in, persistent enforce_exec path for SandboxPolicy resources, which the changeset implements across the sandboxpolicy, igbackend, integration, and config packages. The title is short, uses a conventional-commit style, and names the feature and its opt-in nature. It does not mention the controller, status reporting, or verdict hooks, but it does not need to cover every detail.

Update the IG pin status in the setup section.
The setup section says the public dependency "currently pins the prototype revision." A later section of the same document says node-agent pins 6b8b24afaf6f2fd9eeb1bcaa9f7a52f4f11e9ea1, the expanded IG revision published in IG PR #15. A reader of the setup section gets the wrong pin status. Only re-pinning to the merged IG main revision remains outstanding.

Re-pin the Inspektor Gadget replace to a commit on the fork's main branch before merge.
The Inspektor Gadget Pin Check job fails on this line. Commit 6b8b24afaf6f is not an ancestor of github.com/kubescape/inspektor-gadget:main, and the compare status is diverged. The PR description says this guard must not be bypassed. This pin depends on the unmerged IG PR.
After the IG PR merges, update the pin to the merged main commit. Check the github.com/kubescape/storage pseudo-version on line 39 the same way. It points at the unmerged SandboxPolicy API PR.

Bound the wait for the enrichment callback.
deliver waits only for done or ctx.Done(). ctx is the exporter Run context. If a TaskBasedEnricher accepts a task and never calls callback (for example, it drops the task under load), Run blocks for the process lifetime. The queue then fills, and ReportVerdict drops all later telemetry with ErrVerdictQueueFull. The doc comment says receivers must return promptly, but here the enricher returns promptly and the callback never arrives.
cmd/main.go currently passes no Enricher, so production does not reach this path. ExporterOptions.Enricher and ServiceOptions.Enricher are public hooks.
Add a bounded per-event timeout. The existing once guard keeps loss counted once.

The loop rejects allow rules only when Type is b, empty, or a. A rule such as {Allow: true, Type: "c", Access: "rwm"} with Major == nil passes. That rule grants the cgroup access to every character device. validateImageSpec also admits CAP_MKNOD in allowedCaps. A workload with both can therefore create and open an arbitrary character device node in its writable /dev tmpfs. That contradicts the "host/block device exposure is unsupported" admission guarantee. The /dev/shm fallback path already requires the exact baseline deny rule, so the main admission path is the weaker one.
Reject allow rules without an exact major and minor. Alternatively, allow only the same safe character-device set that spec.Linux.Devices accepts.

Limit the per-node refresh loop. It issues uncached list calls and an unconditional status write for each policy.
Each node runs refresh every 5 seconds and after each container event. Each run issues these requests:
Three unpaged List calls for SandboxPolicy, ClusterSandboxPolicy, and SandboxPolicyClasses (Controller.loadConfiguration).
A pod List filtered by spec.nodeName, and an unfiltered namespace List (snapshotBindings).
A Get and an UpdateStatus for every parsed policy (DynamicStatusWriter.WriteStatus). This includes policies that select nothing on the node. report sets LastReported to the current time, so the status content changes on every cycle and the write cannot be skipped as a no-op.
All list calls use an empty ResourceVersion. Kubernetes serves these as consistent reads from etcd, not from the API server watch cache. The fixed list cost therefore scales with node count at 0.2 Hz, plus one refresh per container event. Status writes scale with nodes × policies.
Consider these changes:
Serve pods and namespaces from shared informers.
Skip a status write when the content is unchanged, ignoring LastReported. Write at a slower heartbeat instead.
Lengthen the 5-second interval, or make it configurable.

Signed-off 1769ac1 makes the internal exec authorization contract explicit: ExecVerdictEvent / NewExecVerdictEvent and ExecAuthorizationEventType (execAuthorization). Authorization remains isolated from ordinary ExecEvent processing; the Verdict payload and enforcement behavior are unchanged. Internal dispatch is separate from private #747’s exec / R-PROC-1 OTEL wire schema. Added second-gadget extension guidance: retain operation-specific facts/dispatch, extract shared metadata only once two concrete contracts establish it, and do not conflate authorization with observed operation success. Current integration status — experimental, dependency-blocked, not merge-ready
As of 2026-10-31 (d7834e44d):
Documentation-only head: the feature guide now distinguishes the pinned legacy integration from the unqualified shared Go foundation. Runtime code remains at
55faa8704; the earlier 29-test/core-build evidence below belongs to that source revision, not a fresh run on this documentation head. Actual module pins remain IG87a796fe9780and Ciliumv0.22.0, not IGdabee7d08. Temporary compatibility checks do not change those pins. Shared accepted-generation publication/reload, native withdrawal integration, Ready, complete worker qualification and kernel qualification remain open. No fresh all-green CI claim is made for this head.Audit contract supersession — 2026-10-30: operational audit is best effort: reload, tracking, resource or structural faults may block audit-only workloads.
The kernel test requires Linux, the
sandboxpolicy_kernelbuild tag, andIG_FULL_BACKEND_KERNEL_TEST=1. The tag admits kernel-fixture initialization; it is not an initialization-free compile-only safety switch. No tagged kernel tests were run. Pure-GoFixturePlancoverage remains in the default test build and is not native proof.Dependency and qualification gates remain: the IG pin is still
87a796fe9780. A coherent future shared-runtime IG revision, qualified supported matrix, and downstream/private OTel integration validation remain pending. IGe722e2affpublishes the accepted audit documentation and legacy mocked Go protocol regression, replacing the obsolete strict-admission requirement; this consumer does not yet select that revision. It is not ABI3/shared/native/kernel qualification. Provider hardening does not establish shared-node readiness or introduce helper exemptions.Downstream provider consumption is published: the downstream consumer now selects public node-agent
v0.3.294-0.20261030181130-55faa8704fd9, while IG stays at87a796fe9780and Cilium atv0.22.0. This consumes provider hardening, not the unfinished shared-runtime implementation or a native qualification. Existing exec-event reuse and backend-field contracts in the preserved description below are unchanged.This PR remains OPEN/non-draft; that flag is not a merge-readiness claim. Do not bypass the stacked dependency/merge guard. All merges remain with the maintainer, and the historical implementation/evidence notes below must not be read as qualification of the unfinished shared-node work.
Overview
Add opt-in SandboxPolicy execution enforcement to the public node-agent:
enforce_execowner: live policy reload without restarting role state, strict runtime bindings, last-good retention, and honest NotReady/protection-unconfirmed reporting.Stacked dependency / do not merge yet: depends on kubescape/inspektor-gadget#15 and the SandboxPolicy API in kubescape/storage#428.
These pass on the latest
mainbase. A CGO-disabled node-agent binary build also passed.The opt-in privileged fixture is
TestFullBackendContainerdKernel; run it only on an explicitly selected disposable supported-kernel machine, followingdocs/features/sandbox-policy.mdand the fixture's provisioning contract. The matching IG owner includes a reproducible Clang 21.1.8/pinned-BTF OCI archive builder.Isolated real-kernel evidence
Real CRI RunPodSandbox/CreateContainer/StartContainer and the production ORAS archive/native backend path passed:
Final combined run: PASS 7.56s; repeat runs: PASS 8.35s / 9.23s / 9.24s. All test VM/key/tag resources were deleted and API absence verified. This fixture does not run a kubelet/API server; controller/watch/status behavior has separate client-backed and cross-layer regression tests.
Review notes
Important regression boundaries include exact PID/mount/cgroup/pod identity reuse, failed retirement, stale withdrawal, configuration/discovery outages, pending-candidate attestation versus publication, superseded uncommitted abort, committed-finalization retry, transport recovery, and explicit kernel/userspace telemetry loss.
The IG pin is
v0.0.0-20261027133411-87a796fe9780, which includes IG main through #16 and preserves its ordinary-symbol streaming fix, plus reviewed canonical-prefix and cancellable-attachment fixes. Merge ownership remains with the maintainer; this PR does not merge or override checks in either repository.Summary by CodeRabbit
The reviewed IG matrix extension preserves the original exact BTF and additionally admits only
759807546ae2feaf616dc65c73167439867bb393dc468a4bd39c0ab1bc267d51, with full isolated upstream predicate/128-path/persistent OCI/actual CRI/hugetlb-exec proof. Provenance and evidence. Private Kubernetes/OTLP proof remains separate and pending.Internal event naming update (
1769ac13)The public authorization wrapper is now
sandboxpolicy.ExecVerdictEvent, constructed byNewExecVerdictEvent, and dispatched underutils.ExecAuthorizationEventType(execAuthorization). It deliberately does not implement the ordinaryutils.ExecEventobservation interface. This names the existing exec-specific contract explicitly; theVerdictpayload and enforcement behavior are unchanged.Internal dispatch names are not OTEL wire names.
