A remote admin write asks for an ACK but no response. When AdminModule refuses it (ADMIN_PUBLIC_KEY_UNAUTHORIZED, NOT_AUTHORIZED, ADMIN_BAD_SESSION_KEY), callModules discards the error reply and ReliableRouter sends a plain ACK, so clients report the write as applied. Phone requests caught by the position, telemetry and traceroute rate limits are dropped with only a QueueStatus, so clients wait for an answer that never comes.

  • MeshModule::callModules: a routing reply a module leaves for a unicast want_ack request that did not ask for a response is sent in place of the ACK. RoutingModule runs last, so ReliableRouter sees the reply and skips its ACK; the sender gets one answer. Without want_ack the reply is still discarded.
  • PhoneAPI: rate-limited position, telemetry and traceroute sends get the RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED NAK text already gets.
  • MeshService::sendRoutingErrorResponse addresses the NAK to our own node. It runs before from is cleared, so addressing the client-supplied from let a forged value send the NAK over the air.

Clients that saw an ACK for a refused write now see a NAK. Android treats that as failure (meshtastic/Meshtastic-Android#7749); Apple, Python and web behavior on the NAK is not checked.

🤝 Attestations

  • I have tested that my proposed changes behave as described.
  • I have tested that my proposed changes do not cause any obvious regressions on the following devices:
    • Heltec (Lora32) V3
    • LilyGo T-Deck
    • LilyGo T-Beam
    • RAK WisBlock 4631
    • Seeed Studio T-1000E tracker card
    • Other (please specify below)

Native: test_mesh_module adds three cases; 257 of 257 pass across the mesh module, ACK matrix, admin, PKI admin, phone API, routing and phone queue suites.

Bench, Heltec V3 sending to a RAK4631 over LoRa, PKI admin set_owner with want_ack and no want_response:

Case 2.8.2.d2cc7f0 (before) 2.8.2.8deb0ce (this PR)
Sender key not in admin_key 4 of 4 NONE ACK from the target, owner unchanged 4 of 4 ADMIN_PUBLIC_KEY_UNAUTHORIZED from the target, no ACK, owner unchanged
Second position request inside 10 s 2 of 2 no routing reply 2 of 2 RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED from the local node
Authorized key, no session passkey not run 2 of 2 ADMIN_BAD_SESSION_KEY
Authorized key with passkey not run 2 of 2 NONE ACK, owner applied

Regression coverage on hardware is limited to the admin and rate-limit paths above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Unauthorized requests can now receive a refusal acknowledgment when an acknowledgment is requested, even if a response was not requested.
    • Rate-limited traceroute, position, waypoint, alert, and telemetry packets now receive a routing error response indicating the rate limit was exceeded.
    • Routing error responses are now addressed to the local node, avoiding use of an unvalidated sender address.

A remote admin write asks for an ACK but no response. When AdminModule
refuses it (ADMIN_PUBLIC_KEY_UNAUTHORIZED, NOT_AUTHORIZED,
ADMIN_BAD_SESSION_KEY), callModules discarded the error reply and
ReliableRouter sent a plain ACK, so clients reported the write as applied.
A routing reply a module leaves for a unicast want_ack request now goes out
in place of that ACK.

Position, telemetry and traceroute requests the phone sends inside the
rate limit were dropped with only a QueueStatus. They now get the same
RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED NAK as text, addressed with getFrom so a client that
leaves from at 0 is answered locally.

📝 Walkthrough

Eligible module refusal replies are sent when a request asks for an ACK but not a response. Rate-limited packet types also receive routing error responses, which are addressed to the local node.

Changes: Routing error responses

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dispatch module refusal replies
src/mesh/MeshModule.cpp, test/test_mesh_module/test_main.cpp
callModules retains and sends an unused Routing refusal reply for an addressed request that asks for an ACK but not a response. Tests verify the NAK has want_ack cleared when requested, and that no packet is sent otherwise.
Rate-limit routing errors
src/mesh/PhoneAPI.cpp, src/mesh/MeshService.cpp, test/test_mesh_module/test_main.cpp
Traceroute and position, waypoint, alert, and telemetry rate-limit branches send RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED routing errors. sendRoutingErrorResponse addresses the response to the local node. A test checks the destination and request ID.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title states the main change: refused requests and rate-limited phone sends now get a NAK instead of silence or an ACK. It matches the changeset in MeshModule.cpp, PhoneAPI.cpp, and MeshService.cpp. It is specific and under 70 characters.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template sections. It has the Attestations section with the device checklist. It explains the changes, the reasoning, the Android impact, and the test results. The author checked the admin and rate-limit paths and the native test run. Most device boxes are unchecked, but the description says hardware coverage is limited to those paths, which is acceptable under the template's guidance on untested hardware.

Comment thread src/mesh/PhoneAPI.cpp
PhoneAPI rate-limits a phone packet before MeshService clears the from the
client supplied, so a forged from sent the RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED NAK over the
air to that node. sendRoutingErrorResponse only answers phone packets, so it
now addresses our own node.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Normalize zero request IDs before rate-limit rejection.

id == 0 is valid phone input. The normal path replaces it with generatePacketId(). The rate-limit branches return first, so their NAK carries request_id == 0. Repository consumers treat zero as no correlation token. The phone cannot reliably match the RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED NAK to the rejected request.
