begin() started the TRNG and end() stopped it, whoever was still drawing. Readers run on different tasks: Bluefruit seeds the SoftDevice with begin() and never ends, uECC starts it on demand for LESC key generation, and an application that pairs begin()/random()/end() (Meshtastic's HardwareRNG does) could stop it under another task's draw, which then timed out. Meanwhile, after BLE came up nothing stopped it: about 0.5 mA on an nRF54LM20, whose CRACEN has no rings-off standby, measured. random() and uECC's default_CSPRNG now start it, fill and stop it, one draw at a time under a mutex. begin() only registers the generator with uECC and end() has nothing left to do.

cracen_rng_start() enables the RNG module before it waits for the generator. When that wait timed out it returned with _rng_started false, so the cracen_rng_stop() after the failed draw returned early and left the module on until the next successful draw. Both paths now go through cracen_rng_disable().

Thanks, running the TRNG per draw fixes the begin()/end() race and the idle TRNG current. Two things to address before merge (inline: the CRACEN ENABLE update and rng_lock()), plus some optional points.
Outside the diff:
BLESecurity.cpp:121ignores the result ofgenKeyPair(), and the DHKEY handler atBLESecurity.cpp:376only logs a failedsharedSecret()and still replies. This predates the PR, but with a TRNG cold start on every draw there are more ways for keygen or ECDH to fail. Fine as a follow-up.
Cleanups:
_rng_startedis always false outsiderng_draw(), so the guards incracen_rng_start(),cracen_rng_stop()andcracen_rng_fill()no longer do anything;rng_draw()could call start, fill and disable directly.- With draws serialized under
_rng_lock, the critical section around each FIFO poll incracen_rng_word()and the comments about readers on other tasks (there and abovecracen_rng_reset_if_halted()) are out of date. - The mutex can be created once up front with
xSemaphoreCreateMutexStatic(), which is safe before the scheduler starts. That removes the lazy init and the NULL checks.
…ed scheduler The module enable and disable on every draw are read-modify-writes of CRACEN->ENABLE, which also holds the CRYPTOMASTER and PKE/IKG bits. Do them inside a critical section so an application using CRACEN through nrfx cannot lose its bit to a preempted draw. rng_lock() waited on the mutex whenever the scheduler had started, also while it was suspended, where the take asserts. Take it only while the scheduler runs; with it stopped or suspended no other task can get in. rng_lock() returns whether it took the mutex and rng_unlock() takes that. With draws serialized, the rest simplifies: the mutex is created statically up front, rng_draw() starts, fills and disables directly (no _rng_started guards), and the critical section around each FIFO poll goes. begin() no longer calls uECC_set_rng(), which only re-installed the default default_CSPRNG and could undo an RNG installed by the application. The header says random() is for tasks, not interrupts or critical sections.

Thanks for the review. 0bf3a70 has the two fixes (inline replies above) and the cleanups:

Thanks, 0bf3a70 covers both points and the cleanups. I checked the static mutex creation against the port: uxCriticalNesting starts at 0 in port_cmsis.c, so the critical section before the scheduler starts is balanced, and an early random() from another file's global constructor never touches the mutex.
Rather than follow-ups, please fold the remaining items into this PR so they land together:
- Suspended-scheduler corner, which comes from combining my two earlier suggestions: if task A is preempted between the FIFO level check and the read in
cracen_rng_word(), and task B then draws with the scheduler suspended, B bypasses the mutex and turns the TRNG off, and A reads the FIFO with the module off. If that is A's last word, the draw returns true with a word that is not random. Havingrng_draw()return false when the scheduler is suspended anduxSemaphoreGetCount(_rng_lock) == 0closes it. - The conditioning key: soft reset and load the key from the first FIFO words on each start, as
nrfx_cracen_entropy_get()does, keeping a timeout around the wait (either by calling nrfx in FIFO-sized chunks with a bounded wait, or by doing the same steps incracen_rng_start()). BLESecurity.cpp: check the result ofgenKeyPair()before using the key pair, and fail the pairing instead of replying with success to the DHKEY request whensharedSecret()fails.
… that would cut into another Each draw now starts the TRNG from a soft reset and loads the conditioning key from the first four words out of the FIFO, as nrfx_cracen_entropy_get() does. A generator halted on an error is reset the same way and gets a new key. The wait for those words counts against the per-word timeout of the fill, so cracen_rng_start() no longer has a failure path of its own. A draw with the scheduler suspended skips the mutex, so it could turn the TRNG off under a task in the middle of a draw. That task's next FIFO level read then takes a bus fault (a HardFault at 0x51801004 on the L15-DK). Such a draw now fails while the mutex is held.
begin() ignored the result of genKeyPair(), and the DHKEY request was answered with success even when sharedSecret() failed. A key pair that failed is now generated again when a pairing asks for it, and the pairing is refused if that fails too. A failed shared secret is answered with BLE_GAP_SEC_STATUS_DHKEY_FAILURE.

begin()started the CRACEN TRNG andend()stopped it, whoever was still drawing. Readers run on different tasks:begin()+random()and never callsend().default_CSPRNGand leaves it on.begin()/random()/end()stops it as soon as it is done, even under another task's draw, which then spins untilRNG_TIMEOUTand fails. Meshtastic'sHardwareRNG::fill()does exactly that.Meanwhile, after BLE comes up nothing stops the TRNG until the application's first
begin()/end()pair. On an nRF54LM20, whose CRACEN has no rings-off standby, that was 56 s after every boot at +0.5 mA (INA228 on the 3.3 V rail). The nRF54L15 parks a full FIFO inIDLE_STANDBY, so there it should cost less; I have not measured it.Now
random()anddefault_CSPRNGstart the TRNG, fill and stop it, one draw at a time under a FreeRTOS mutex (created on first use; before the scheduler starts there is only one caller).begin()only registers the generator with uECC andend()has nothing left to do; both stay for callers that pair them. The cost is a TRNG start per draw: 32 bytes through
HardwareRNG::fill()take ~0.53 ms on an nRF54L15, as before, since itsend()already stopped the TRNG each time.Testing
HardwareRNG::fill()20 times and TinyCrypt P-256 keygen/ECDH throughdefault_CSPRNG, all correct; CRACENENABLE= 0 twenty seconds after boot. A new LESC pairing with an iPhone (passkey) worked, andENABLEwas back to 0 after it and after 9 h 19 min running without a reset.Summary by CodeRabbit
