feat(chat): auto-favorite nodes on direct message - #1491
When a direct message is received, the peer node is automatically marked as a favorite. This keeps frequently contacted nodes visible without manual favoriting.
Skips in two cases:
The node is already favorited (node.isFavorite in NodesClient)
The device role is CLIENT_BASE (Config_DeviceConfig_Role.CLIENT_BASE), which typically runs headless and should not accumulate favorites
Add autoFavorite() to ChatClient that marks the peer node as a favorite
when a direct message is received. Skips if the node is already
favorited or if the device role is CLIENT_BASE.
Fixesmeshtastic#1240
ChatClient now requests that direct-message peers be favorited when it receives a direct message or sends to a node-number destination. It skips peers already favorited or already requested, and skips requests when the local role is CLIENT_BASE.
ChatClient calls autoFavorite for received direct messages and node-number send destinations. The method skips already-favorited peers, previously requested peers, and CLIENT_BASE roles. It ignores favorite request failures. Tests cover inbound and outbound requests and skip conditions.

Explanation
The title "feat(chat): auto-favorite nodes on direct message" matches the main change. The PR adds automatic favoriting of direct-message peers in ChatClient, and the raw summary and objectives both confirm this. It is specific and follows conventional commit style. It does not mention the outbound send path or the CLIENT_BASE skip, but it does not need to cover every detail.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the required content. It explains what the change does and why, and it lists the skip conditions. It links issue #1240, lists the changes made, and describes the testing done. The template's Checklist and Screenshots sections are absent. The Screenshots section does not apply because the change has no UI impact. The Checklist is not filled in. The description also says the auto-favorite happens only on receipt. The linked issue and commit messages also cover outbound sends, so the description omits that behavior.
Resolution
Optional improvements: state that auto-favoriting also runs before outbound direct messages, since the commit messages and linked issue #1240 cover that path. Add the Checklist section, marking the items that apply. Note that the Screenshots section does not apply.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1240 requires auto-favoriting of a direct-message peer on send and on receive. It skips peers that are already favorites. It skips the action when the local device role is CLIENT_BASE.
The whole-PR diff (merge base to head) shows:
Receive path: the client.events.onMessagePacket subscriber calls this.autoFavorite(conv.peer) when conv.kind === "direct".
Send path: ChatClient.send() calls this.autoFavorite(conv.peer) when conv.kind === "direct", before the optimistic append. This resolves the gap found in the previous review, where outbound direct messages did not trigger auto-favoriting.
autoFavorite(peer) returns early when the peer is already in favoriteRequested. It returns early when client.nodes.byNum(peer)?.isFavorite is true. It returns early when client.config.radio.value.device?.role equals Config_DeviceConfig_Role.CLIENT_BASE. Otherwise it calls client.nodes.favorite(peer), and it ignores failures with .catch(() => {}).
The new test file ChatClient.autoFavorite.test.ts covers: inbound DM favorites the peer; already-favorited peer is skipped; CLIENT_BASE role is skipped; repeated inbound DMs call favorite once; outbound send() to a destination calls favorite for that destination.
Notes for the reviewer. The favoriteRequested set is never cleared. A peer whose favorite request fails is not retried in the session. A peer that the user unfavorites is not re-favorited in the session. The issue does not state either case. The set matches the issue's requirement to avoid duplicate admin messages while isFavorite is not yet updated. The author reports pnpm test and pnpm lint passing. I did not run these checks.

Explanation
The whole-PR diff changes two files. packages/sdk/src/features/chat/ChatClient.ts adds the autoFavorite hook calls on the receive and send paths, the favoriteRequested set, and the autoFavorite method. packages/sdk/src/features/chat/ChatClient.autoFavorite.test.ts adds tests for those behaviors. Each change supports the direct-message auto-favorite objective of #1240. No unrelated production code, configuration, or unrelated tests appear in the diff.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 2 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Favorite peers for outbound direct messages.
send() does not dispatch onMessagePacket. An outbound echo would also be skipped by the duplicate check. A peer therefore remains unfavorited when the user sends a direct message but receives no reply. Call autoFavorite from the successful direct-send path too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

favoriteNode() converts failures into Result.err, so NodesClient.favorite() fulfills instead of rejecting. The current .catch() does not run, and the peer remains permanently blocked. This also prevents auto-favoriting after a successful unfavorite().
Use the set for in-flight burst deduplication. Let isFavorite suppress later requests after success.
