MacOS x86

[gsquire]

As a follow up for #50, add support for MacOS on x86 chips. It needs to be added separately as there were a few intermittent CI failures and I don't have a machine to test it on. See #50 (comment) for an example.

All tests (as of commit aa3c7f464c9f6e6f9fa1e6d4d9337c4bd9d53b89) passed locally on my 15' MBP 2019 with 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9.
