fix(harness): refresh the insights and vault-doctor records from the vault - #3097
dotf harness refresh re-renders harness/skills/insights and harness/skills/vault-doctor from vault 802e828c. That vault commit replaced the retired obs-cli.sh calls with dotf vault health plus vault-validate.py --strict, and added owner and created to vault-doctor's required frontmatter. Both tools exist on a current machine.
The vault is the newer side for both records: neither was edited on main after its vault commit. The issue also named pr-review-triage, but #3084 has already brought that record up to date on main.
Only the two record files are committed. Review then found that vault-doctor called vault-validate.py by a cwd-relative path. The fix went into the vault source (vault 73a13d46), and a second refresh carried it into the record. The same refresh also re-rendered:
a new harness/agents/hermes-kubelab record, which is out of scope here and ticketed separately.
Verification
On this branch, after merging main (which now carries #3095):
$ dotf harness check --repo-root . --against-vault
[check] OK: no harness drift # check exit=0
$ bats tests/harness-doctrine-records.bats
1..2
ok 1 no-auto-merge: the auto-merge exception sits inside a full-only region
ok 2 the committed records match what a refresh would render from the real vault
# bats exit=0
CI has no vault, so it does not run the real-vault test.
Knowledge
Lesson: none: --against-vault already detects this class on vault machines; the fix is a refresh
ADR: none: no decision
Runbook: none: the refresh procedure is documented in dotf harness refresh --help

vault-doctor instructions: preserve an existing non-empty value, otherwise
obtain it with dotf env path VAULT_PATH and stop if the result is empty. Keep
the existing vault-validate.py --strict invocation.
- Line 95: Update the Step 1 and Step 2 frontmatter diagnosis and prioritization
criteria to include missing owner and created fields, matching the required
fields checked in Step 4. Ensure notes missing only either field are collected
and ranked for repair.

The insights and vault-doctor skill records replace specified Obsidian CLI checks with dotf vault health and strict validation. The vault-doctor record also documents graceful degradation when the Obsidian GUI is unavailable and adds owner and created to frontmatter repair guidance and its template. Both records have updated generated hash metadata.
The refreshed skill can miss or fail to validate vault issues and gives inconsistent fallback guidance, so these workflow defects should be fixed before merging.

Explanation
The title names the main change: refreshing the insights and vault-doctor harness records from the vault. The raw summary shows both SKILL.md files changed to use dotf vault health and vault-validate.py --strict, which matches the title's scope. The title's fix(harness) prefix fits a harness record refresh.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has a Summary with what and why, a Knowledge section with 'none:' reasons for each kind, and a Test plan with checked and unchecked items. It also states verification results. The SDD checklist and SDD skip rationale sections are absent, so the spec-gate context is incomplete. The Summary is a single paragraph rather than 1-3 bullets. The 'Closes #3075' line is present. Overall the description is mostly complete.

Explanation
[#3075] Requirement: refresh and commit the two records harness/skills/insights/SKILL.md and harness/skills/vault-doctor/SKILL.md from their vault sources. Whole-PR diff (merge base to head) changes both files.
Insights record: generated_sha changes to 9467faa75bb0f0cf. Step 2 replaces obs-cli.sh unresolved and obs-cli.sh orphans with dotf vault health and python3 "$VAULT_PATH/00_meta/scripts/vault-validate.py" --strict.
Vault-doctor record: prerequisites and protocol replace obs-cli.sh with dotf vault health. The diagnosis step runs vault-validate.py --strict through $VAULT_PATH, not a cwd-relative path. Step 4 adds owner and created to required frontmatter, with defaults and template fields.
These hunks match the vault edits described in the PR. Not verified: the generated_sha values against vault source, and the real-vault bats result. The author reports both. CI has no vault, so the real-vault test cannot run here.

Explanation
No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Verified in scope: both record hunks above implement #3075. Changes under harness/agents/hermes-kubelab show no diff between merge base and head, so that out-of-scope record is not in this PR.
Unresolved: the PR description says the refresh also re-rendered the no-auto-merge doctrine and targets from #3095. The whole-PR summary lists only the two skill records. I did not confirm from the complete changed-file list that no doctrine or target file changed. The merge base is f6d4390c. The PR also states that main was merged into this branch, so #3095 content may or may not appear in this diff.
Resolution
Provide the complete changed-file list for merge base f6d4390c to head 7a9c8b32. Confirm that it contains only harness/skills/insights/SKILL.md and harness/skills/vault-doctor/SKILL.md. If it also contains no-auto-merge doctrine or target files, confirm whether they are #3095 content already on main. Re-run this assessment after that list is available.

Cwd-dependent vault path
Class: THEORETICAL
The new protocol block invokes the vault script with a bare relative path, python3 00_meta/scripts/vault-validate.py --strict, while the sibling record harness/skills/insights/SKILL.md (also changed here) invokes the same script as python3 "$VAULT_PATH/00_meta/scripts/vault-validate.py" --strict. An agent running the vault-doctor protocol from a repo worktree — the normal case, since agents operate in the repo and the vault is a separate checkout — resolves 00_meta/scripts/... against the repo root, where no 00_meta directory exists, so the strict validation step errors out and the documented check is never actually performed on the file it targets. Aligning this line with the $VAULT_PATH form used in the insights record removes the dependence on the caller's working directory.
The two vault edits were reviewed and summarized in the PR body (obs-cli.sh retired in favour of dotf vault health + vault-validate.py --strict; owner/created added to required frontmatter).
dotf harness refresh was run and only the two record files are in the diff.
The drift check now reports [OK] record insights and [OK] record vault-doctor, i.e. the two records the issue named no longer drift.

vault-doctor calls vault-validate.py by a cwd-relative path
THEORETICAL
Applied. Reproduced: from a repo worktree, 00_meta/scripts/ does not exist. The fix went into the vault source (vault 73a13d46), and a refresh carried it into the record (7a9c8b32).
Ticket compliance: real-vault test still red because of no-auto-merge (#3095)
n/a
Resolved.#3095 merged and main is merged into this branch. harness check --against-vault exits 0, and bats tests/harness-doctrine-records.bats gives 2/2 ok, exit 0.
Out of scope and ticketed: #3098 (refresh writes harness/agents/hermes-kubelab, but check does not report it missing).
Replace the stale obs-cli condition in the degrade rule.
Line 149 tells the agent to degrade when obs-cli is unavailable. This PR removed obs-cli from the skill, and the skill never invokes it. The fallback that applies is the one stated at line 28: the Obsidian GUI is not running, which makes dotf vault health unavailable. A reader following line 149 checks for a tool that the workflow no longer uses.
Make the same edit in the vault source at 00_meta/skills/vault-doctor/SKILL.md, then refresh this record. An edit made only in the harness copy is overwritten on the next refresh.

Review comment at @harness/skills/vault-doctor/SKILL.md at line 149:
Update the “Degrade gracefully” rule to use the unavailable `dotf vault health`
check when the Obsidian GUI is not running, while retaining the Hive MCP
fallback and reporting what could not be checked. Apply the change in the vault
source skill and refresh its harness record so the generated copy stays
consistent.

vault-doctor.md:42: resolve VAULT_PATH before invoking the strict validator
Minor
Applied in the vault source (vault 6de5423c). It uses the same rule as the insights record: keep a non-empty value, otherwise dotf env path VAULT_PATH, otherwise stop and ask. A refresh carried it into the record (db9df965).
vault-doctor.md:95: Steps 1–2 do not collect or rank the new owner/created fields that Step 4 repairs
Minor
Applied in the same vault commit: Step 1 collects both, Step 2 ranks them MEDIUM next to id, and the sample report names them.
On db9df965: harness check --against-vault exits 0, and bats tests/harness-doctrine-records.bats gives 2/2 ok, exit 0. The autopilot record that the same refresh re-rendered is #3113's change, so it is left out of this PR.
