Closes #3109

What

dotf worktree done <name> reads its argument as a path or the slug add was given. A miss listed only the paths it tried, and nothing said the command wanted the slug, so after a git branch -m (the autopilot flow does this to get a fix/ prefix) the operator had to hunt for the directory name.

This PR takes the ticket's second acceptance option: the error now says done takes a path, or the slug add was given and lists every linked worktree git knows as slug (branch), e.g. known worktrees, as slug (branch): feat-demo (feat/demo). It applies to both error paths (a bare name and a name with a /). The main checkout is not listed (worktree.LinkedWorktrees drops the first entry git worktree list --porcelain gives; it reuses the existing ParsePorcelain).

Not done, on purpose: resolving a renamed branch itself. I built and tested that (a lookup through the same porcelain), but it came to 113 spec-gate lines (69 executable) against the 50-line threshold, which would need a spec whose Closes forces an archive and an external review in this same PR. It is filed as #3114 with the design. The ticket allowed this split ("or").

Tests (red first)

TestWorktreeDoneListsTheWorktreesItKnowsForAnUnknownName failed on main (the error named neither the slug rule nor the known worktrees). New: TestWorktreeDoneDoesNotListTheMainCheckoutAsAKnownWorktree, TestLinkedWorktreesDropTheMainCheckout. All use real git repos.

Evidence (run from cli/)

go build ./... ok
go vet ./... ok
gofmt -l . (empty)
go test ./... all packages ok
golangci-lint run 0 issues.
scripts/check-spec-gate.sh --base-ref origin/main --head-ref HEAD: Production diff 45 LOC < threshold 50

Knowledge

  • Lesson: none: no new gotcha beyond what the ticket records.
  • ADR: none: no decision changed.
  • Runbook: none: the error message carries the guidance.

done reads its argument as a path or the slug add was given, but a miss only
listed the paths it tried, so a branch renamed after add (git branch -m) sent
the operator hunting for the directory name. The error now says what done
takes and lists each linked worktree git knows as slug (branch). The main
checkout is not listed.

the existing branch display.
- Line 581: Update knownWorktreesNote to obtain WorktreeListPorcelain through an
injected Deps operation instead of constructing RealGitRunner directly, so tests

- Line 581: Update the WorktreeListPorcelain invocation in the worktree command

Walkthrough

When worktree done cannot resolve a path or slug, its error now includes information about linked worktrees known to Git. If Git cannot provide or parse that information, the command falls back to usage guidance.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Severity of issue fixed: Low

Merge Risk: Low · up to 6651b

Error guidance can point to the wrong checkout or repository. Following a colliding slug can remove a clean checkout; the change is mergeable with that risk understood.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(worktree): name the slug done wants, and list the worktrees it knows" matches the main change. The PR makes worktree done error messages state that it takes a path or the slug given to add, and lists linked worktrees as slug (branch). The title is concise and specific, and a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change. The title is 72 characters, which is within a normal length for a conventional commit subject.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #3109 accepts either slug/branch support or an error that names the expected slug and lists known slugs. The PR takes the second option.

Evidence (whole-PR diff, merge base to head):

  • cli/internal/cmd/worktree.go, knownWorktreesNote: the note reads "done takes a path, or the slug add was given". It lists each linked worktree as "slug (branch)", for example "feat-demo (feat/demo)".
  • resolveDoneArg: the note is appended on both miss paths. These are the bare-name path (case 0 of the slug match) and the name-with-"/" path ("no worktree at ...").
  • Slug is derived as filepath.Base(path) with the "<repo>-wt-" prefix trimmed. This matches the slug form that done resolves.
  • Main checkout is excluded by worktree.LinkedWorktrees (cli/internal/worktree/linked.go), which drops entry 0 of ParsePorcelain output.
  • Failure paths (repo root, list, or parse errors) fall back to the usage note. No panic path is introduced.

Tests (cli/internal/cmd/worktree_done_test.go):

  • TestWorktreeDoneListsTheWorktreesItKnowsForAnUnknownName covers both "nosuch" and "fix/nosuch".
  • TestWorktreeDoneDoesNotListTheMainCheckoutAsAKnownWorktree covers the no-linked-worktree case.
  • TestWorktreeDoneListsALegacySiblingBySlug covers the legacy sibling slug.

Renamed-branch lookup is not implemented. The issue allows this split ("or"). It is tracked as #3114.

Not verified: I did not run the test suite. Pass rests on source inspection.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed code serves the #3109 error-listing objective.

  • cli/internal/cmd/worktree.go: knownWorktreesNote and its call sites in resolveDoneArg. These are the in-scope error change.
  • cli/internal/worktree/linked.go: LinkedWorktrees is a thin wrapper over the existing ParsePorcelain. It supplies the main-checkout exclusion that the listing needs.
  • cli/internal/worktree/linked_test.go and cli/internal/cmd/worktree_done_test.go: tests for the new behavior. These support the objective.

No unrelated behavior change was found in the reviewed diffs. The spec-gate line count and the PR's build, lint, and test results are not linked-issue requirements. They were not used in this assessment.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 85.71% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 7 functions across 4 files.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template in substance. The Summary section gives the what and why, citing issue #3109 and the chosen acceptance option. The Knowledge section has Lesson, ADR and Runbook lines, each with a 'none:' reason. The Test plan lists the commands run with results, including go test, go vet, gofmt, and golangci-lint, and the spec-gate result. The SDD checklist and SDD skip rationale sections are missing entirely. The description does not state whether a spec folder under specs/<feature-id>/ is included, and it does not confirm the Issue/Project checkbox state. The bats, shellcheck and harness lines are not addressed, though they may not apply to Go-only changes. The description does not give a manual verification entry. The author should add the SDD checklist and skip rationale sections, or state why they do not apply. The author should also confirm the spec folder status and the ~300 LOC atomic cap status (the description reports a 45 LOC production diff, which is under the spec-gate threshold).

Resolution

Add the 'SDD checklist' section from the template with each item checked or explained. State whether a 'specs/<feature-id>/' folder is included, or add the 'skip-sdd' label with a 'SDD skip rationale' written for this PR. Mark the Test plan items that do not apply (bats, shellcheck, harness) as not applicable, and add a 'Manual verification' line or state that none was performed.

Review triage

The PR author did this triage.

  • CodeRabbit: posted a rate-limit notice only; it names no file, line or claim, so no review ran. Nothing to apply. Disposition: declined as a review, disclosed as unreviewed by it (review-attestation reads pending for the same reason).
  • review (pr-agent): still pending when this was written, no findings posted. This PR is not claimed reviewed by it; if it posts findings I will triage them here and a new push reopens the window.
  • Spec gate: the first draft of this change (branch resolution) was 113 lines and tripped it; I narrowed to the error-listing option (45 lines) and filed TOOL: worktree done should resolve a renamed branch through git worktree list #3114 for the rest rather than skipping SDD.
  • CI otherwise green on the head.

Misleading Slug

Class: THEORETICAL
The known-worktree note lists filepath.Base(w.Path) as the slug. For a legacy <repo>-wt-<slug> sibling, the basename is <repo>-wt-<slug>, not the slug that done resolves through the legacy sibling rule. Following the advertised "as slug" name may therefore fail for those worktrees. I did not verify worktree.SlugCandidates, so this is uncertain. Confirm the name a legacy sibling resolves from, or list the slug form for such entries.

Swallowed Error

Class: THEORETICAL
knownWorktreesNote discards the error from worktree.LinkedWorktrees. If the porcelain output fails to parse, linked is nil and the note reports "this repository has no linked worktrees". That is a false statement in the error the operator reads while looking for the directory name. Return the plain takes note on a parse error, as the other failure paths in this function already do.

PR Reviewer Guide 🔍

Here are some key observations to aid the review process:

🎫 Ticket compliance analysis 🔶

3109 - Partially compliant

Compliant requirements:

  • the error names the slug it expected
  • the error lists the slugs it knows

Non-compliant requirements:

  • accepting the branch name

Requires further human verification:

  • whether the listed names are accepted by done for legacy <repo>-wt-<slug> siblings (see key issues)

3114 - Partially compliant

Compliant requirements:

  • done main never resolves to the main checkout, since the main checkout is dropped from the listed worktrees

Non-compliant requirements:

  • dotf worktree done <renamed-branch> removes that worktree

Requires further human verification:

The PR author did this triage. Reviewer: PR-Agent (## PR Reviewer Guide and two inline findings on 95b70f8). CodeRabbit posted a rate-limit notice only, not a review.

Finding Disposition
worktree.go:588 Misleading Slug: a legacy <repo>-wt-<slug> sibling was listed by its directory name, which done does not resolve Applied in 6651bd15: the note lists the slug with the <repo>-wt- prefix trimmed. TestWorktreeDoneListsALegacySiblingBySlug builds a real legacy sibling; it fails on 95b70f8.
worktree.go:585 Swallowed Error: a porcelain parse error became "this repository has no linked worktrees" Applied in 6651bd15: a parse error returns the plain takes note, like the other failure paths. No test: the porcelain comes from git and no fixture reaches the parse error through done.
Ticket compliance: accepting the branch name not done Declined here: deferred to #3114, stated in the PR body.

Verification on 6651bd15: go test ./... ok, golangci-lint run 0 issues, spec gate 48 LOC < 50.

Inject the Git listing used by knownWorktreesNote.

In cli/internal/cmd/worktree.go, Line 581 calls RealGitRunner directly. Tests cannot supply a listing failure or malformed output without invoking Git. Pass this operation through a Deps seam. As per coding guidelines: “External surfaces (git, exec, filesystem) are injected via a Deps struct so Run is unit-tested with no real side effects.”

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Remove inherited repository-location variables from the Git child process.

In cli/internal/cmd/worktree.go, Line 581 can list the wrong repository when GIT_DIR points elsewhere, even when the operator supplies --repo: WorktreeListPorcelain runs git -C <root> without clearing that variable. The error then names unrelated worktrees. Clear repository-location variables in the runner before this call. Git documents that GIT_DIR overrides repository discovery. (git-scm.com) Based on learnings: strip Git repository-location variables from subprocesses targeting a specific repository.

Review triage

The PR author did this triage. Second pass. Reviewer: CodeRabbit (review on 6651bd15, four findings).

Finding Disposition
worktree.go:591 (Minor): stripping -wt- from every worktree lists a normal-layout repo-wt-second as second, which done can resolve to another checkout Applied in 94ab34bf by reverting the strip from 6651bd15, along with its test. The note lists the plain directory name again, which never names a different checkout. Naming each layout correctly moves to #3114, so PR-Agent's legacy-slug finding is now deferred there, not applied.
worktree.go:591 (Minor): a worktree outside both layouts is listed by a basename done cannot resolve Deferred to #3114 (comment added).
worktree.go:581 (Major): the git listing is not injected through Deps Deferred to #3122. It needs a seam that this 45-line change cannot carry under the spec gate.
worktree.go:581 (Minor): GIT_DIR in the environment overrides git -C Deferred to #3122. The runner predates this PR and every targeted call shares it.

The parse-error fix from 6651bd15 stays. Verification on 94ab34bf: go test ./internal/cmd/ ok, golangci-lint run 0 issues, spec gate 48 LOC < 50.
