Adds rootless Podman as a persisted launcher engine on Linux and macOS. install --engine podman and answers JSON select it explicitly; a working Docker installation remains the automatic preference, while Podman-only hosts use their installed engine. Later commands use the saved engine and reject an in-place engine switch or a rootful Podman connection.
Podman uses the existing runtime images with keep-id ownership, SELinux-labelled workspace/secret binds, and its native default seccomp/AppArmor policy. Engine probes check Podman >=5, Docker Compose >=5.6.0, cgroup v2 CPU/memory delegation, storage and profile capacity. On macOS the probes inspect the machine behind the selected connection and report resize guidance. Support bundles contain allowlisted engine/capacity fields. Backup resumes the exact Podman writer containers it paused, including failure cleanup.
The new Rootless Podman launcher workflow runs the small-profile lifecycle on ubuntu-latest. The smoke script also supports all three profiles and a real previous-version update/checkpoint/rollback cycle. The existing Docker launcher tests are unchanged.
Validation
Fedora 44, Podman 5.8.1, Docker Compose 5.6.0, rootless cgroup v2, SELinux Enforcing: small, medium and large passed install/readiness, RW workspace host ownership, RO workspace rejection, shared CLI socket, init/CPU/memory limits, run/exec UID 10001, bundled provider verification, backup/restore, doctor/fix, support bundle, down/up, uninstall/restart and purge.
Each Linux profile also passed installation of published 1.1.7 images, update to locally built 1.1.8 with a verified checkpoint, rollback to 1.1.7 and a second update. The 1.1.8 images used the unchanged Dockerfile.
macOS, Podman 6.1.4 machine and Docker Compose 5.6.0: the small-profile lifecycle above passed. A real 4-CPU/8-GiB machine rejected the large profile with allocation requirements and resize guidance.

The Podman implementation at 7b9dfb2 passed Ubuntu native Podman validation: 225 launcher tests, seven subprocess cleanup tests, both runtime image builds, ownership/health-check canaries, and the full small-profile lifecycle through purge. The cleanup tests cover SIGTERM, an ordinary install failure, and individual or combined container/volume/network removal failures. They verify that cleanup continues, fixture files are removed, child processes stop, and the original failure or signal status is preserved.
Commit 8158d0d restores the App Studio and mail-sync timestamp fixtures and the Docker distribution assertions to upstream 50272acb, keeping this PR focused on Podman. The launcher, smoke script, workflow, runtime images and helper documentation are unchanged from the native run above.
Current local validation: 225 launcher tests and seven cleanup tests pass, as do npm run check, npm run build, changed-source lint, hygiene, staged secret scanning and whitespace checks. The broader macOS npm test command passes 146 public-script tests, fails two and skips two opt-in tests before reaching workspace tests. The failures are in files identical to upstream: the credential fixture expects unpadded wc -c output, and the distribution test expects undici 6.28.1 while the Dockerfile pins 6.29.1.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for choosing rootless Podman or Docker as the container engine on Linux and macOS. Docker remains the default when available; Podman is used on supported hosts without Docker.
The selected engine is saved for future commands. Existing installations cannot switch engines in place.
Added engine-specific readiness, diagnostics, storage checks, and backup handling. Setup now verifies the selected engine and system resources.
Added engine-aware CLI guidance, uninstall messaging, and support-bundle details.
Documentation
Expanded setup guidance with Podman prerequisites, installation steps, platform notes, and engine limitations.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.

Walkthrough
The launcher adds persisted selection between Docker and rootless Podman on Linux and macOS. It adds engine-specific configuration, runtime operations, diagnostics, and storage checks, plus Podman CI and acceptance tests. Documentation and two API test fixtures also change, and a distribution test updates its expected undici version.

If a writer is removed after podman pause succeeds and before cleanup, Podman resolves all IDs before unpausing. The missing ID can make that lookup fail before Podman unpauses any remaining writer. The helper can therefore leave another writer paused.

Minor · Handle SIGTERM before the smoke process exits. · podman-launcher-smoke.mjs:131-142
scripts/podman-launcher-smoke.mjs has no SIGTERM handler. The workflow sends SIGTERM with timeout, so Node can terminate before the finally block runs. The workflow EXIT trap only stops the Podman API service. Containers, volumes, and networks can therefore remain until runner teardown.
Refactor the existing project-scoped cleanup into an idempotent helper. Invoke it from a SIGTERM handler, wait for it to finish, and then exit. Keep the finally block as the cleanup path for ordinary failures.

Addressed both cleanup findings in e1345d9. Backup now tracks each successfully paused writer and resumes them individually, so a removed writer cannot strand the others. The smoke runner shares one awaited cleanup path for SIGTERM and ordinary failure, stopping its child process groups before removing project resources.
Validation: 225 launcher tests and two subprocess cleanup tests pass, including on Ubuntu. Native Podman validation also passes the complete small-profile lifecycle through purge. Root checks/build, changed-source lint, hygiene and staged secret scan pass.

Added function contracts in 7b9dfb2 for the touched launcher, engine, storage and smoke helpers. The executable AST is unchanged; 225 launcher tests, seven cleanup tests, root checks/build and changed-source lint pass.
For the scope warning: the two API changes only give sequential test-fixture events distinct timestamps, avoiding random-ID ordering when requests finish within one millisecond. The distribution assertions now match the undici 6.29.1 pin already present in the unchanged Dockerfile. These fixes were needed during the required full-suite validation; no production API behavior or image dependency was changed.
