Part of #562 (the shortcut editor).

Add a shortcut editor for commands, plugins and map tools. Users can assign multiple shortcuts, confirm conflicts, remove or restore bindings, and save changes as device preferences. Command Search opens the editor at eligible commands, including commands with existing parameterized bindings.

Settings › Customize › Customize Shortcuts… opens the editor window alongside Ribbon and Quick Access. During capture, Escape cancels; Assign Escape explicitly assigns it. While typing, shortcuts without Ctrl/⌘ stay with the text field, including Shift/Alt combinations. First-person navigation pauses other unmodified shortcuts while retaining Escape, Home and Delete.

Layout arrow nudges and Backspace remain contextual controls. Import/export remains for the later part of #562.

Validation:

  • cargo xtask ci (format, Clippy, workspace tests and layers).
  • uvx pre-commit run --all-files.
  • cargo build --locked --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web.
  • UI tests cover assignment, conflict cancellation and replacement, preference reload, keyboard activation of Add, Escape cancellation, explicit Escape assignment, Reset All and the Command Search context menu.
  • Shortcut-dispatch tests cover first-person gating and keeping Shift/Alt shortcuts out of focused text fields. A preference round-trip test also removes and reloads a registry-declared shortcut.
  • Rendered and inspected both screenshots at 1366 px. Assets: Add shortcut customization screenshots rustgis-assets#9.

Walkthrough

The PR adds saved shortcut preferences and a shortcut editor. Users can open the editor from Settings or Command Search. Shortcut dispatch pauses during capture and skips unmodified shortcuts in first-person map view, except Escape, Home, and Delete.

Changes: Shortcut customization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Keymap preference changes
crates/ui-egui/src/keymap.rs
The keymap applies and serializes preference differences, assigns and removes bindings, and skips oversized or invalid preference input. Tests cover persistence, default changes, and malformed records.
Shortcut editor and interactions
crates/ui-egui/src/shortcutui.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/shortcut_customization.rs
The editor loads and saves preferences, lists eligible commands, and supports searching, assigning, removing, restoring, and resetting shortcuts. Conflicts require confirmation, and clipboard shortcuts are rejected. Tests cover editor behavior and preference restoration.
Application entry points and shortcut behavior
crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/chrome.rs, docs/user-guide/workspace.md
The app initializes and renders the editor, and exposes it through a command and Settings button. Command Search can open the editor filtered to a command. Shortcut dispatch pauses during capture and applies modifier rules in first-person view. The guide describes shortcut customization.

Code review

Bugs

  • Broken Command Search row (high confidence, out of scope): "Identify Features" (ui.identify) is added to UI_COMMANDS, but Command Search runs it with no params. ui.identify then calls identify with null coordinates, which fails with lon is required. The PR body doesn't mention this entry. Inline comment posted on chrome.rs:641, with a suggestion to drop it.

Security

  • None found. The stored preferences are bounded: 100 KB of text, at most 1,000 changes, command ids capped at 200 characters. Clipboard chords are rejected both when assigning and when loading. Non-test code has no unwrap, expect, or unsafe.

Performance

  • Per-frame rebuilds while the editor is open (nit, high confidence): show rebuilds rows and Keymap::new every frame, and sort_by_key with to_lowercase() allocates on every comparison. Inline comment posted on shortcutui.rs:77 with a sort_by_cached_key suggestion.

Quality

  • Escape can't cancel capture (medium confidence): while capturing, the first key press is assigned, including Escape and Tab. Cancel is only possible through the button. Inline comment on shortcutui.rs:174.
  • Notice literal not wrapped in tl! at its source (low-medium confidence): the notice literal is wrapped only at display time. Extraction may miss it, but I did not check docs/i18n.md. Inline comment on shortcutui.rs:47.

AGENTS.md

  • Ribbon PR statement missing (medium-high confidence): the PR adds a ribbon control (Shortcuts… in Settings › Customize, ribbon.rs:3244). docs/contributing.md asks such PRs to state the task, the tab and group, whether it opens a dialog, and a 1366 px tab screenshot. The body has none of these; the screenshot it cites is of the editor, not the tab.

Checked and fine: the keymap baseline matches at load, save and reset (Keymap::new(registry)), the tl! and Services APIs exist, the wasm-facing code is clean, and the new tests cover the round trip, conflicts and reload. I could not build or run the tests in this session, so the findings above come from reading the code.

Code review

Bugs

  • Escape cannot cancel "Add…". The first pressed key is assigned, so Escape binds to the command and the conflict modal then names Explore as the owner. Inline comment on shortcutui.rs:192 with a suggestion. Confidence: high.
  • Low-confidence: apply_preferences caps input at 100 KB and 1,000 records, but preferences() has no matching cap. A very large saved set would load partially or not at all. Realistic sizes are far below the cap. Confidence: low.

Security

  • No issues found. Preference records are length-checked, clipboard chords are rejected, and parsing is get()-based. Non-test code has no unwrap, expect or unsafe.

Performance

  • While the editor is open, show() rebuilds Keymap::new(registry), rows() and the sort every frame. Caching these on open would avoid that. Confidence: low–medium. Not posted inline.

Quality

  • Editor.notice stores a &'static str that is never read. Inline comment on shortcutui.rs:23. Confidence: high.
  • rows() uses dedup_by after sorting by label, so it only removes adjacent duplicates. Non-adjacent duplicates would survive. I did not find a concrete case. Confidence: low.
  • Missing tests: Escape-during-capture, the first-person gating in chrome::shortcuts, and the Command Search context-menu path.

AGENTS.md

  • The ribbon button label differs from the Command Search label. This breaks the "one name per thing" rule in docs/contributing.md. Inline comment on ribbon.rs:3244 with a suggestion. Confidence: high.
  • The PR body does not state the ribbon placement and purpose, which the ribbon guidelines ask a ribbon PR to do. Confidence: medium.
  • Strings are wrapped in tl!, and i18n::fmt is used for the messages. No new assets. Dependencies are unchanged (serde is already present).

Verified by reading: the Keymap::new and Keymap::default defaults, the Chord round-trip for Plus, Minus and Escape, the Services closure types used by the test, and the UiState fields. I could not compile or run the tests in this session, so build status is unverified.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code in keymap.rs, mapview.rs and chrome.rs. I did not compile or run the tests. Most of the code is careful: preference loading is size- and count-capped, malformed records are skipped, clipboard keys are reserved, and conflicts need confirmation. The findings below are the ones I could support by reading.

Bugs

  • First-person guard also disables unmodified defaults such as Escape (chrome.rs:512, confidence: medium). The new condition skips every unmodified key in first-person mode. The default Escape → tool.set explore (keymap.rs:32), along with Delete and Home, stop working there. mapview.rs does not use Escape to leave first-person mode, so there may be no keyboard way back to Explore. Either exempt Escape or state the change in the docs.

Security

  • None found. Preference input is bounded (100 KB, 1,000 records, 200-character command ids), malformed records are skipped, and clipboard chords cannot be bound.

Performance

  • Per-frame rebuild of the editor rows, and an ineffective dedup (shortcutui.rs:78, confidence: high for the dedup, low for impact). dedup_by only removes adjacent duplicates, and the list is sorted by label, so it rarely removes anything. The editor also rebuilds rows and Keymap::new every frame while open. This is cheap today.

Quality

  • Nothing else worth a separate comment. Naming and comments match the surrounding code, and the new strings go through tl! and i18n::fmt.

AGENTS.md

  • Layering and wasm: the new code uses serde and egui_kittest, both already declared in crates/ui-egui/Cargo.toml. I did not check the Services save/load paths on wasm.
  • Ribbon placement: the PR body describes the Settings tab but does not explicitly state the ribbon placement the guidelines ask for.
  • Unverified: I did not confirm that egui::Id::unique exists in the pinned egui version, or that Chord fields and Keymap::bindings are pub, since the integration test in tests/ requires that. Please confirm these when the crate compiles.

Pause only unmodified shortcuts while typing.

The shortcut editor accepts Alt and Shift bindings without Command. When typing is true, the current guard skips those bindings before dispatch. Therefore, such customized shortcuts do not run while typing, although the documentation pauses only unmodified keys.

Thanks for the suggestion. I kept the current guard because Shift can be used to type uppercase letters, and Alt can participate in character input. Allowing those shortcuts while a text field is focused could intercept normal typing. The documentation says unmodified shortcuts are paused; it does not promise that all modified shortcuts run while typing.

Code review

I found no confirmed bugs. The preference round-trip, the clipboard guards, the input size caps and the conflict flow look correct when traced through the code. The main items are one UX gap, a naming mismatch, and a missing comment. I could not compile or run the tests here; I checked the APIs the diff uses by reading the source.

Bugs

  • None confirmed.

Security

  • None found. Preference input is capped at 100 KB and 1,000 records, malformed records are skipped, and oversized command names are rejected. Nothing in the diff panics on hostile input.

Performance

  • While the editor is open, Keymap::new(registry) and rows() are rebuilt every frame (shortcutui.rs:106). Low impact, confidence ~50%.

Quality

  • Escape cannot cancel key capture: the first key press is captured, so Escape gets bound and opens a Replace/Cancel prompt (shortcutui.rs:185), confidence ~60%.
  • The ribbon label "Shortcuts…" does not match the Command Search label "Customize Shortcuts…" and collides with Help › Shortcuts (ribbon.rs:3244), confidence ~80%.
  • The first-person clause in chrome::shortcuts has no comment, and it pauses Escape and Delete as well as typing (chrome.rs:512), confidence ~90%.
  • Command Search offers "Customize shortcut…" only by right-click (chrome.rs:993). The ribbon button still gives a keyboard-reachable route, so this is only a discoverability note, confidence ~40%.

AGENTS.md

  • The UI-only command lives in lib.rs, the test is in tests/, and interface strings go through tl!/i18n::fmt. Those follow the guidelines.
  • Ribbon placement is consistent with the Settings tab's purpose. The label naming above conflicts with the "one name per thing" rule.

Code review

Bugs

  • No definite bugs found. The save/load path (Keymap::preferences / apply_preferences), conflict handling, clipboard reservation and the reset logic read as correct. Chord Display and parse round-trip for the keys covered by tests. (confidence: medium-high)

Security

  • No issues. Preference input is bounded (100 KB, 1,000 records, 200-character command ids), malformed records are skipped, and nothing on this path panics. (confidence: high)

Performance

  • shortcutui::rows() is rebuilt every frame while the editor is open. Its duplicate check is O(G·R), via rows.iter().any inside the loop over grouped() (shortcutui.rs:72). can_customize also calls grouped() for each visible command-search row each frame. Both are small at current sizes, so this is low impact. Caching the rows would fix it. (confidence: medium)

Quality

  • Tab, Enter, Space and the arrow keys can be bound. Only bare Escape is refused during capture (shortcutui.rs:194). (confidence: low, ~40%)
  • The "Customize shortcut" context-menu predicate is written two different ways: !id.contains(':') || starts_with("plugin:") in chrome.rs:993 and contains(':') && !starts_with("plugin:") in chrome.rs:974. A shared helper would keep them in step. (confidence: high)
  • The chrome.rs:489 comment block was not updated for the new capturing() guard at chrome.rs:492. (confidence: high)
  • Unit tests use Keymap::default() as the base, but production uses Keymap::new(registry). See the inline comment on keymap.rs:365. (confidence: medium)

AGENTS.md

  • Never-crash rules are met: no unwrap, expect or unsafe in non-test code, and integration-test unwraps match the existing tests.
  • Translation is correct: tl! and tl_raw! are used for user-visible text, and the new strings are left to the catalogs.
  • Layering is respected, since shortcutui sits at L6.
  • Ribbon placement is stated in the PR body.
  • Wasm-specific code is gated with cfg!.
  • The docs claim is inaccurate. The doc says unmodified keys pause while typing, but the code pauses every chord without Ctrl/⌘ (docs/user-guide/workspace.md:167). (confidence: high)

Inline comments are posted at shortcutui.rs:194, workspace.md:167 and keymap.rs:365.

Addressed the remaining review items in 5e78ae9 and c8eb294, preserving the maintainer's updates:

  • Escape cancels capture; Assign Escape provides an explicit assignment path.
  • First-person mode retains the existing Escape, Home and Delete shortcuts. Other unmodified bindings remain paused.
  • Matched the ribbon label, simplified the clipboard notice, deduplicated rows before sorting and fixed customization of existing parameterized bindings.
  • Added UI tests for keyboard activation, Escape, conflict replacement, Reset All and Command Search; added dispatch and registry-shortcut preference tests.
  • Clarified typing/navigation behavior and attached inspected 1366 px screenshots (Add shortcut customization screenshots rustgis-assets#9).

Kept per-frame defaults/row rebuilding because there is no measured performance issue and caching would introduce synchronization state. Shift/Alt typing protection remains, with a regression test.

Validation on the integrated version: cargo xtask ci (2,498 passed, 0 failed, 16 ignored), uvx pre-commit run --all-files, and the wasm32 web build all passed.

Bugs (low, ~85% confidence): the editor lists ui.checkUpdate and ui.mcpRelay on the web app, but Command Search hides them there (chrome.rs ~line 954). A user can bind a key to a command that has no web UI. can_customize has the same gap. Skipping them here keeps the two lists consistent. A shared helper would avoid the duplicated check.

Bugs (low, ~60% confidence): if the stored preference is over 100,000 bytes, or has more than 1,000 records, the excess is dropped silently. The next save() (shortcutui.rs save) then writes diffs from that partial keymap and overwrites the stored value, so the dropped custom shortcuts are lost without notice. Practically unlikely, but worth either surfacing the problem or refusing to overwrite a value that failed to load in full.

Security (low, ~70% confidence): the editor only offers commands that don't need input (shortcutui::rows, can_customize), but apply_preferences accepts any command id and any params. A stored record can therefore bind a key to a command that needs arguments (for example a file-reading command with a path), which then runs on the keypress. The store is the user's own, so the impact is limited. Consider applying the same eligibility check here, which would need the registry passed in.

let mut reset_all = false;
let mut assign_escape = false;
let defaults = Keymap::new(&app.session.registry);
let rows = rows(app);

Performance (low, ~80% confidence): while the editor is open, every frame rebuilds Keymap::new(registry) (line 107), rows() (plugin list clone, sort, dedup with string keys, an O(rows × groups) scan), and defaults.keys_for per row. The output changes only when the keymap, the registry or the plugin set changes. Caching rows in Editor and rebuilding it on open, filter change or keymap change would remove this per-frame work.

Click **Add…** and press the desired key combination. Escape cancels; **Assign Escape** binds Escape.
If the combination is already in use, choose **Replace** or **Cancel**.
Tab, Enter, Space and arrow key bindings can override their usual keyboard navigation actions.
Click a displayed key to remove it, **Reset** to restore a default key, or **Reset All** to restore

Quality (nit): the button reads Reset <key>, for example "Reset Ctrl+T" (shortcutui.rs ~line 162), not Reset. Naming it as shown would make the instruction match the UI. The same nit applies to the context-menu label "Customize shortcut…" (chrome.rs ~line 999), which should match the command name "Customize Shortcuts…" to follow the one-name-per-command ribbon guidance.

Code review

Bugs

  • The shortcut editor lists ui.checkUpdate and ui.mcpRelay on the web, though Command Search hides them there. A key can be bound to a command with no web UI. Inline comment on shortcutui.rs:62. Confidence: ~85%.
  • An oversized (>100 KB) or over-long (>1,000 records) preference is silently dropped, and the next save overwrites it. Custom shortcuts are lost without notice. Practically unlikely. Inline comment on keymap.rs:231. Confidence: ~60%.

Security

  • apply_preferences accepts any command id and params, including commands that need input. The editor never offers those, so a stored record can bind a key to a command that runs with arguments on keypress. The store is user-local, so impact is limited. Inline comment on keymap.rs:236. Confidence: ~70%.

Performance

  • While the editor is open, Keymap::new, rows() and keys_for are rebuilt every frame. Their output only changes when the keymap, registry or plugins change. Inline comment on shortcutui.rs:108. Confidence: ~80%.

Quality

  • Nits, grouped: the button label is "Reset ", not "Reset" as the docs say (workspace.md:167). The context-menu label "Customize shortcut…" should match the command name "Customize Shortcuts…".
  • keymap.rs stores egui key names. If egui renames a key, stored bindings silently drop on load. Low confidence, no comment posted.

AGENTS.md

  • The ribbon guidelines ask for a 1366 px screenshot of the tab in the PR. The body says it was inspected but links no image. AGENTS.md puts screenshots in opengeos/rustgis-assets, linked by URL. Confidence: ~75%.
  • ROADMAP.md:157 still lists [Feature]: Customizable keyboard shortcuts, with export and import #562 under "Next". An item with an open PR counts as Underway, so it belongs there. Confidence: ~70%.

Checked and fine: no unwrap/expect in non-test code, and the preference parser is bounded and tested against malformed records. The capture path is safe: chrome::shortcuts runs before shortcutui::show in ui(), so a captured key cannot fire its new binding in the same frame. The new APIs (plugins::commands/command, CommandSpec::key, Registry, big, Services) match their definitions. Nothing new is wasm-unsafe, and no new dependencies were added (serde is already in ui-egui). I did not compile or run the tests, since I only have file access here.
