feat(symbology): pie and bar diagram symbology from several numeric fields - #1048
Adds diagram symbology: a small pie or bar chart drawn on each feature from several numeric
attribute fields, over the renderer's own symbol — as ArcGIS Pro's Chart symbology and QGIS's
Diagrams do. A polygon layer of administrative units can keep a Graduated Colors fill underneath
while a pie on each feature shows, say, its male/female population split.
Commands (each one undoable, like every command): layer.diagram sets the diagram, layer.diagramInfo reads it back, layer.clearDiagram removes it and leaves the renderer as
it was.
Pie: slice angles are each category's share of the total, with a configurable start angle
(degrees clockwise from north). Bar: one bar per category, rising from a baseline.
Size: a fixed radius/height in points, or grown with the categories' sum (square-root
scaled, as Proportional Symbols are), computed from the features when the diagram is set.
Labels: each slice or bar can be labelled with its value (in the legend's number format),
its percent of the total, or both.
Background and outline: an optional disc/box behind the chart and an outline around it.
Categories take colours in turn from the palette new layers take, or a colour per category.
A feature where every category is null or zero draws nothing.
The categories list under the layer's classes in map and layout legends (print included).
The Symbology pane gains a Diagram section: pie/bar kind, per-category field and colour
rows (add/remove), size (fixed or scaled with drag values), start angle, labels choice,
background and outline, and a remove button.
Project files stay compatible: the new field is omitted when unset and an older RustGIS reads
the layer as before.
Testing
cargo xtask ci locally: fmt, clippy -D warnings, cargo xtask layers, and the workspace
tests all pass except the pre-existing environment-specific filegdb::reads_what_gdal_writes_when_gdal_is_installed (the local GDAL's ogr2ogr cannot
write TINZ on this Windows machine; unrelated to this change).
New tests: settings clamping and label round-trip (crates/map/src/diagram.rs), the commands
set/read/error/clear/undo round trip (crates/engine/src/cmd/diagram.rs), and rendering tests
including a pixel-level check that labels paint (crates/render/src/diagrams.rs).
Verified manually in the desktop app on a polygon layer: pie and bar charts render per
feature, labels update live, and diagram categories appear in a layout legend.
UI evidence
Visible UI change: the Symbology pane (single-symbol and category renderers) gains a Diagram section with the kind toggle (Pie/Bar), one row per category (field combo, colour
button, remove), an "Add field" row, Size (Fixed/Scaled), Start angle (pie), Labels
(None/Value/Percent/Value and Percent), Background and Outline controls, and a Remove button.
Happy to add a screenshot to opengeos/rustgis-assets if useful.
…ields
A diagram draws a small chart on each feature over its renderer's own
symbol, as ArcGIS Pro's Chart symbology and QGIS's Diagrams do: a pie
whose slices are each category's share of the total, or a bar chart
with a bar per category, from several numeric fields. The size is
fixed in points or grown with the categories' sum (square-root scaled),
the pie has a start angle, and an optional disc or box sits behind the
chart with an outline around it. Each slice or bar can be labelled
with its value, its percent of the total, or both. The categories list
under the layer's classes in map and layout legends.
Commands: layer.diagram, layer.diagramInfo, layer.clearDiagram, each
one undoable like every command. The Symbology pane gains a Diagram
section with the kind, per-category field and colour rows, size, start
angle, labels, background and outline.
Feature layers can now store pie or bar diagrams based on numeric fields. Commands and the Symbology pane configure them. The renderer draws diagrams over feature symbols, and layout legends include their categories.

Medium confidence-high (~85%): every drag frame becomes an undo step.layer.diagram is an ordinary undoable command, so .changed() fires on each frame while the DragValue is dragged. One drag therefore pushes dozens of undo snapshots and reruns the scaled range over every feature each time. The other sliders in this file avoid that (panes.rs:1280, :1573, :5589) by applying on drag_stopped() || (changed && !dragged()). The same applies to the min_size/max_size drags (3966, 3969), the start angle (3984) and the outline width (4034).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug (~60% confidence): culling can hide labels near the view edge. The label sits at size + 7 points from the anchor, and a text such as 52K (52%) is roughly 45 pt wide. Its far edge therefore reaches about size + 30 pt, but reach only adds 16 pt. A chart whose anchor is just off-screen can be culled while its label is still visible. The doc in docs/user-guide/cartography.md says labelled charts stay visible "to their last letter", which this does not guarantee.
Either widen the reach to cover the label (for example + 40.0 when labels are on) or soften the doc claim.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Correctness (~70% confidence): the polygon anchor is the centroid, not an interior point. The doc above (anchor) promises "a polygon's interior centre", but the centroid of a concave polygon (a U, C or crescent-shaped district) can fall outside the polygon. The pie would then be drawn over a neighbouring feature or on empty map.
A common fix is a point-on-surface: if the centroid is not inside the ring, take the midpoint of the widest interior span on a horizontal scanline through the centroid. At minimum, reword the doc to say "centroid" and note the limitation.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (nit): this comment about the scaled size's range sits above the labels parsing. It belongs above the size block at line 130. The labels comment on line 124 is the one that fits here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (nit, high confidence):DiagramSettings::fits has no caller. The only occurrence of fits( in this file is its own definition, and the command layer already rejects geometry-less layers itself. Remove it, or call it from layer.diagram so the check lives in one place.
Reviewed the full diff (10 files, +1370/−2) against the base, read the surrounding code for each changed path, and checked the claims the PR makes. I could not build or run the tests in this environment (no shell), so compile-level and test-result claims are from reading only. The core design holds up: undo comes from the generic command snapshot, the project serialization degrades safely on hostile input, the layer copy path clones the whole Layer, and the non-test code follows the no-panic rules.
Bugs
Polygon anchor can fall outside the polygon (crates/render/src/diagrams.rs:61, ~70%). The doc promises an "interior centre", but the centroid of a concave polygon (U, C or crescent shape) can lie outside it. The pie would then draw over a neighbouring feature or on empty map. A point-on-surface fallback, or a doc correction, would fix it.
Culling can hide labels near the view edge (crates/render/src/diagrams.rs:37, ~60%). A value label extends about 30 pt from the anchor, but reach only adds 16 pt. The cartography doc's "visible to their last letter" claim does not hold for wide labels.
Performance
Each drag frame becomes an undo step (crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:3960, ~85%). The diagram size, scaled min/max, start angle and outline width controls call apply on every .changed() frame. Each call is an undoable layer.diagram run, so one drag floods the undo stack and recomputes the scaled range over all features each time. The file's existing sliders avoid this by applying on drag_stopped().
Diagram layers leave the GPU path, and per-frame work is uncached (crates/render/src/lib.rs:3098, ~60%, summary only). layer.diagram.is_none() correctly sends a diagram layer to the CPU renderer. One diagram on a dense layer therefore moves the whole layer off the GPU. The per-visible-feature d.values call also allocates a Vec and does a field-name lookup on every repaint. Resolving field indices once per frame would help.
Quality
Misplaced comment: the scaled-size comment sits above the labels parsing, not the size block (crates/engine/src/cmd/diagram.rs:122). Nit.
DiagramSettings::fits has no caller; the command layer checks geometry itself (crates/map/src/diagram.rs:243). Nit.
The {"field", "color"} JSON mapping is repeated about nine times in diagram_section. A small helper would remove the repetition. Nit.
numeric[0] and numeric[1] index directly (panes.rs, guarded by the length check above). Reads less safely than the get() style AGENTS asks for. Nit.
let _ = app.run("layer.clearDiagram", …) swallows the error, while apply reports failures via notify. Make them consistent.
layer.diagram silently defaults a non-numeric from/to or an invalid outline width, where an invalid size returns an error. Pick one convention. Nit.
label_at uses a magic 7.0 * 1.33 * ppp. A named pt-to-px factor (4/3) would read better. Nit.
Strings passed through a variable, such as tl!(label), tl!(cur.label()) and tl!(mode.label()) ("Pie", "Bar", "Fixed", "Scaled by sum", "None", "Value and Percent"), may not be picked up by a literal-based catalog scan. I did not check docs/i18n.md, so this is ~40%.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code. clippy.toml allows them in tests.
layer.diagram is an ordinary undoable command. The no-dialog rule holds.
Layering holds: map, render and engine do not depend on egui.
std::time is not used, so the wasm build is unaffected by this change.
User-visible strings in the UI use tl!. The variable-string cases above are the open question.
No new assets, so ATTRIBUTION.md needs no change.
Not verified: whether crates/engine/src/tests.rs::hostile_params_never_panic covers layer.diagram and layer.diagramInfo. AGENTS asks that the hostile-params harness stay green, so the author should confirm the new commands are included.

Skip discarded GPU attempts for turned and tilted views with diagram layers.
When an ordinary visible diagram feature has valid positive values, gpu_may_turn still permits the GPU path, but gpu_layer sends the diagram layer to the CPU accumulator. flush_acc emits that accumulator as an Image, so gpu_turned rejects the bearing-only north-up scene or the affected pitched band and the caller renders on the CPU.
For pitched views, this is a banded GPU attempt, not a full north-up pass. A gate in gpu_may_turn can avoid the discarded attempt. This also sends diagram layers with no visible diagram features to the CPU, which is the stated trade-off.

Reject malformed size and outline numbers instead of replacing them with defaults.
layer.diagram replaces a supplied but malformed size.from, size.to, or outline.width with its default. It then returns success without echoing those values. A caller that sends {"from":"18"} stores a 6-point minimum instead of 18. The fixed size path and the colour and background paths in the same command return errors for malformed values, so the command is inconsistent.
The reads use Value::as_f64, which returns None for a JSON string. The unwrap_or defaults then apply:
size.from and size.to default to 6 and 40.
outline.width defaults to 0.75.
startAngle has the same problem for non-numeric strings. It uses the shared f helper, which accepts numeric strings. A value such as "north" becomes 0 without an error. Numeric strings such as "90" are accepted.
The fixed size path accepts "18" through f. The object form {"from":"18"} does not. The same numeric value therefore gives different results depending on its shape.
Suggested fix: read the optional numbers through f, which already accepts numeric strings and rejects non-finite values. Return an error when a supplied value is invalid. Keep the defaults for absent or null values.

Stop scaling diagram bounds on a streamed layer from its current window.
layer.diagram on a streamed layer computes the scaled size range from l.dataset.features, which holds only the features of the current view. The range is stored in the layer's settings and never recomputed when the view changes. Charts drawn later on other parts of the layer use this range. Totals above the stored max draw at max_size. Totals below the stored min draw at min_size. If the view holds no numeric totals, the range falls back to 0..1, and almost every chart draws at max_size. The result depends on where the map was panned when the diagram was set.
Reject streamed layers in set, until the range is computed from the whole source. This is the smallest correction that prevents the wrong range:
🐛 Suggested fix
if l.graphics {
return Err("this works on feature layers, not graphics layers".into());
}
+ if l.is_streamed() {+ return Err("this works on loaded layers, not streamed layers".into());+ }
This edit blocks diagrams on streamed layers. Keeping them requires computing the range over the complete source, which this review did not verify.

DiagramSettings::values checks each category value for finiteness, but it does not check the sum. Two finite values near 1e308 sum to infinity. The method still returns that infinite total as valid diagram data. The renderer then draws no pie slices and no bars for the feature, although its category values are valid and positive.
With this change, an infinite total returns None, which the caller already handles as "nothing to draw". A finite total behaves as before.

Give polyline diagram legend swatches a visible colour.
A layer with a diagram that uses a polyline geometry shows its category rows in a layout legend. The category colour is in Symbol.fill, but the legend swatch for a polyline reads only Symbol.stroke, and DiagramSettings::legend() sets that stroke to white. The polyline swatch therefore draws white on the white paper, so the category is effectively invisible.
The fix must keep the white outline for point and polygon swatches. Make the line swatch use the category colour, either by setting the legend stroke to the category colour for line layers or by passing the category colour to the polyline branch of swatch(). Do not change the polyline branch to read fill globally, because ordinary polyline symbols depend on stroke.

L68:
L69: * ##### `#[serde(from = "FromType")]`
L70:
L71: Deserialize this type by deserializing into `FromType`, then converting. This type must implement `From<FromType>`, and `FromType` must implement `Deserialize`.
L72:
L73: * ##### `#[serde(try_from = "FromType")]`
L74: Deserialize this type by deserializing into `FromType`, then converting fallibly. This type must implement `TryFrom<FromType>` with an error type that implements `Display`, and `FromType` must implement `Deserialize`.
L75:
L76: * ##### `#[serde(into = "IntoType")]`
L77:
L78: Serialize this type by converting it into the specified `IntoType` and serializing that. This type must implement `Clone` and `Into<IntoType>`, and `IntoType` must implement `Serialize`.
L79:
L80: * ##### `#[serde(crate = "...")]`
L81: Specify a path to the `serde` crate instance to use when referring to Serde APIs from generated code. This is normally only applicable when invoking re-exported Serde derives from a public macro in a different crate.
L82:
L83: * ##### `#[serde(expecting = "...")]`
L84:
L85: Specify a custom type expectation text for deserialization error messages. This is used by the generated `expecting` method for the container `Visitor`, and as a fallthrough error message for untagged enums.
L86:
L87: * ##### `#[serde(variant_identifier)]`
L88: Deserialize either a string or an integer, depending on which one the data format uses as its representation of externally tagged enum variant tags. Generally human-readable formats would represent variants using their string name while compact binary formats would represent them using an integer index. This attribute can only be applied to an enum containing all unit variants.
L89:
L90: * ##### `#[serde(field_identifier)]`
L91: Deserialize either a string or an integer, depending on which one the data format uses as its representation of struct fields identifiers. This attribute differs from 【5†`variant_identifier`】 in that the final variant is permitted to be a newtype variant, which will be deserialized if the input matches none of the unit variants of this enum, similar to 【6†`serde(other)`】.

L1:
L2: The `serde` crate has a Cargo feature named `"std"` that is enabled by default. In order to use Serde in a no_std context this feature needs to be disabled. Modify your Serde dependency in Cargo.toml to opt out of enabled-by-default features.
L3:
L4: `[dependencies]

L7: Be aware that Cargo features are unioned together across your entire dependency graph. That means if any other crate you depend on has not opted out of Serde's default features, you will build Serde with the std feature enabled whether or not your direct dependency on Serde has `default-features = false`.
L8: For example, if you are using `serde_json`, its equivalent enabled-by-default `"std"` would also need to be disabled.
L9:

Bound categories before deserializing the untagged diagram value.
de_diagram uses an untagged Read enum. Serde buffers the input for that enum before it attempts DiagramSettings, so a field-level deserialize_with reader does not prevent the outer buffer from retaining the complete categories array. clamped() applies MAX_CATEGORIES only after this buffering.
Keep the lenient Other(serde::de::IgnoredAny) fallback, but replace the outer untagged deserialization with a custom visitor that preserves the fallback and reads categories incrementally. Skip excess entries with IgnoredAny before storing them.

List only diagram categories that draw in shown legends.
The new block at crates/render/src/layout.rs:1164-1167 appends d.legend() for every configured category. It does not check whether any retained feature gives that category a positive value. If every retained feature has a null, zero, or negative value for a category, no chart draws it, but the shown legend still lists it.
The legend_rows doc comment says that a drawn legend "shows what the frame draws." Class rows in that legend come from the drawn rows. The diagram rows do not.
A safe fix needs per-category usage from the drawn rows. Include a category only when at least one drawn row gives it a positive value. shown_legend and complete_shown_legends do not return that usage today, so the change must add it. The trigger needs a category that has no positive value on any retained feature, so the impact is narrow.

Draw diagrams for extruded polygons in every non-Shared view.
When a layer has extrusion and labels_to is not Labels::Shared, the branch at crates/render/src/lib.rs:3149-3154 draws the extrusion instead of reaching the only diagrams::draw call at crates/render/src/lib.rs:3248-3263. This affects flat Labels::Own frames and Labels::Turned frames, as well as Labels::Tilted frames. A configured diagram with drawable values can therefore be omitted while the polygon still renders.
Also draw diagrams for upright points in Labels::Tilted and Labels::Shared views. Place each diagram at its feature anchor in the applicable projection. This requires updates to the tilted and upright rendering paths, not only the final flat-view pass.

Gate the diagram section on geometry, not only on graphics.
The new Diagram section appears for every non-graphics layer with at least two numeric fields. A geometryless table meets both conditions, so the Pie Chart and Bar Chart buttons appear. Clicking either button cannot create a diagram. The error from that attempt is then dropped without notice to the user.
The failing path:
symbology only returns early for a missing active layer or a raster layer. Geometry does not gate it (crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:3582-3592).
The added call at panes.rs:3804-3808 runs when !l.graphics. It does not check geometry.
With two or more numeric fields, diagram_section shows the Pie Chart and Bar Chart buttons (panes.rs:3864-3876).
A click runs layer.diagram. The engine rejects a layer whose geometry is GeometryType::None with the error "this works on layers with geometry" (crates/engine/src/cmd/diagram.rs:107-109).
The button handler discards that result with let _ = app.run(...) (panes.rs:3870-3873). App::run only logs the error at info level and returns it (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:1606-1608).
The fix is to add the geometry check to the gate that the hunk already uses. g is l.geometry_type() and is in scope at panes.rs:3594.
🐛 Suggested fix
- if !l.graphics {+ if !l.graphics && g != GeometryType::None {
ui.add_space(10.0);
ui.separator();
diagram_section(app, ui, &l, &numeric, t);
}
Layers with no geometry cannot hold a diagram. The layer.diagram command rejects them, so this gate hides no valid behavior.

existing g value. Keep diagram_section available for eligible layers.

Keep the hidden RGB of transparent diagram colours when the opacity changes.
The diagram category colour picker passes the stored colour through Color32. For a category with alpha 0, the stored RGB is discarded before the picker opens. When the user changes the alpha, the picker returns black at the new alpha. The category then renders as black, not as the configured colour. This happens on an edit to a fully transparent category, for example one stored as #FF000000.
Build the picker value from the stored RGB, as the class colour picker does. When only the alpha changes, keep the category's original RGB, as the class picker's hsva.a != alpha branch does.

Update the diagram category color-picker flow that initializes `colour` from
`c.colour` and writes changes to `cats[i]["color"]`: construct the picker value
using the stored RGB even when alpha is zero, and when only opacity changes,
preserve the category’s original RGB, matching the class color picker’s
behavior.

Describe square-root interpolation instead of exact area scaling.
With totals of 100 and 200, the default maps pie radii to 6 and 40 points. Their areas differ by (40 / 6)², not by 2. Replace the exact area claim with a description of the configured interpolation.

Update the cartography sizing description to explain the configured
interpolation rather than claim square-root scaling or exact area
proportionality; preserve the stated fixed-size option and describe how feature
totals map to chart radii.

Stroke the background box in bars() when a background is enabled.
bars() fills the chart box but only strokes individual bars. This omits the whole-chart outline documented by DiagramSettings::stroke. The background stroke should be added immediately after the background fill, before the bar loop.

In the bars() background-box block, add a stroke for the finished rectangle
immediately after its fill, using DiagramSettings’ stroke color and width along
with the existing opacity and scale values. Keep the stroke conditional on the
background rectangle being present and preserve the bar loop unchanged.

The per-frame undo defect is real, but the same-head finding is already published. The proposed release-only gate is unsafe because it can discard the in-progress DragValue value. Persistent draft state or undo merging is required.

Update the DiagramSize::Scaled DragValue handling so continuous dragging does
not create a separate undo entry for every frame; use persistent draft state or
merge undo updates, while preserving the in-progress value rather than applying
changes only on release.

Summary
Adds diagram symbology: a small pie or bar chart drawn on each feature from several numeric
attribute fields, over the renderer's own symbol — as ArcGIS Pro's Chart symbology and QGIS's
Diagrams do. A polygon layer of administrative units can keep a Graduated Colors fill underneath
while a pie on each feature shows, say, its male/female population split.
layer.diagramsets the diagram, layer.diagramInforeads it back, layer.clearDiagramremoves it and leaves the renderer asit was.
(degrees clockwise from north). Bar: one bar per category, rising from a baseline.
scaled, as Proportional Symbols are), computed from the features when the diagram is set.
its percent of the total, or both.
A feature where every category is null or zero draws nothing.
rows (add/remove), size (fixed or scaled with drag values), start angle, labels choice,
background and outline, and a remove button.
the layer as before.
Testing
cargo xtask cilocally: fmt, clippy-D warnings, cargo xtask layers, and the workspacetests all pass except the pre-existing environment-specific
filegdb::reads_what_gdal_writes_when_gdal_is_installed(the local GDAL's ogr2ogr cannotwrite TINZ on this Windows machine; unrelated to this change).
crates/map/src/diagram.rs), the commandsset/read/error/clear/undo round trip (
crates/engine/src/cmd/diagram.rs), and rendering testsincluding a pixel-level check that labels paint (
crates/render/src/diagrams.rs).feature, labels update live, and diagram categories appear in a layout legend.
UI evidence
Visible UI change: the Symbology pane (single-symbol and category renderers) gains a
Diagram section with the kind toggle (Pie/Bar), one row per category (field combo, colour
button, remove), an "Add field" row, Size (Fixed/Scaled), Start angle (pie), Labels
(None/Value/Percent/Value and Percent), Background and Outline controls, and a Remove button.
