Summary

Adds three overlay tools on the plumbing Intersect, Identity and Union already share, and lets Erase take any input geometry.

  • Symmetrical Difference (symmetricalDifference; input, overlay, output; polygons on both sides): the pieces exactly one layer covers. That is Union's features without Intersect's: each input feature's part outside every overlay polygon, with empty overlay attributes, then each overlay polygon's part outside every input polygon, with empty input attributes. It is a fourth Overlay mode in the existing overlay().
  • Update (update; input, update, output; polygons): each input polygon's part outside every update polygon keeps its attributes, and each update polygon is then added as it is. The output has the input's fields only. An update polygon's values go into the input's fields of the same name, matched exactly or else ignoring case, and are converted to the field's type: a float becomes text at full precision, a fractional value becomes an integer by truncation, and text that isn't a number becomes empty. If two update fields match one input field ignoring case, the tool stops with an error rather than pick one.
  • Split (split; input, split, field, output): input (points, lines or polygons) is clipped, as Clip clips, by each split polygon, giving one layer each.
    • With a field, split polygons that share a value make one layer, named <output or input>_<value>. A polygon with no value is named by its id. Without a field, each polygon gives a layer named by its id.
    • Layers that would be empty are left out, and their number is reported.
    • More than 1,000 layers is an error.
    • The field parameter is text, because the field picker only lists the first layer's fields.
  • Erase now takes points and lines through part(g, mask, false), the helper Identity uses. A point on an erase polygon's edge, or a line along one, counts as inside and is erased.
    • Erase also unions an input feature's overlapping parts first, as the other overlay tools do.
    • It keeps the input's source CRS.
    • It refuses a table without geometry.

cut() is lifted out of overlay(): a feature's part in each overlay polygon it overlaps, and its part outside them all. Symmetrical Difference and Update share it. Uncut features keep their coordinates exactly, and the single-mask rule for the part outside is kept.

All four tools are in the Feature Analysis list and the Tools pane, and the three new ones have icons drawn in code. The user guide, README, ROADMAP.md's list of what exists, GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md, the comparison page and the assistant's geoprocessing skill are updated.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci passes, and the wasm build of rustgis-web succeeds.
  • GEOS reference corpus, now 32 cases: erase of lines and points, symmetrical difference, and update, against the existing parcels and zones. Those layers include holes, a multipart parcel, overlapping zones and a road along a zone's edge. The existing expected files regenerate byte-identical.
  • Unit tests:
    • Symmetrical Difference: keys and pieces, an uncut feature copied unchanged, selections in both layers, refusing a non-polygon input.
    • Erase: points and lines, a feature with overlapping parts, a table refused.
    • Update: remainders, then update polygons whole; fields matched by name across case and order; type conversions; an ambiguous field refused.
    • Split: a layer per polygon, a layer per value with a null value named by id, a point on a shared edge in both layers, selections, values that share their first 64 characters kept apart, the 1,000-layer cap.
    • Three new junk-parameter cases in hostile_params_never_panic.

UI evidence

Headless ui_shot runs (light and dark) show the three tools in Analyze › Feature Analysis with their icons, and the Split form in the Tools pane (input, split features, split field, output name).

Related issue

None. These are the next overlay tools after #959 (Intersect, Identity, Union, Near).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Erase support for point, line, and polygon layers, removing geometry inside selected erase polygons while preserving the input geometry type and coordinate reference system.
    • Added Symmetrical Difference to keep portions covered by only one of two layers.
    • Added Update to remove covered input areas and add update polygons, matching their attributes to input fields.
    • Added Split to divide selected features into named layers, optionally grouped by field value. Empty layers are omitted, and up to 1,000 split areas are supported.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the user guide and tool listings with the new analysis tools and their behavior.

…tools

Symmetrical Difference keeps the pieces exactly one of two polygon
layers covers: Union's features without Intersect's. It is a fourth
mode of the shared overlay, whose per-feature cut (the part in each
overlay polygon, and the part outside them all) becomes cut().

Update keeps each input polygon's part outside every update polygon,
then adds the update polygons as they are. The output has the input's
fields; update values go into fields of the same name (exactly, else
ignoring case), converted to the field's type. A field two update
fields match is an error.

Split clips the input by each split polygon, one layer each; with a
split field, polygons sharing a value make one layer named by it.
Empty layers are left out; more than 1000 is an error.

Erase now takes points and lines through part(), unions an input
feature's overlapping parts first, keeps the input's CRS and refuses
a table without geometry.

GEOS reference cases cover erase of lines and points, symmetrical
difference and update.

Walkthrough

The analysis toolset now generalizes Erase to point, line, and polygon inputs and adds Symmetrical Difference, Update, and Split. The change updates shared overlay handling, tests, tool listings, icons, and documentation.

Changes: Analysis tools

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared overlay handling and Erase
crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, crates/analysis/tests/reference/*, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Erase accepts point, line, and polygon inputs, preserves geometry type and CRS metadata, and omits features with no remaining geometry. Shared overlay handling loads selected zones by parameter name and uses shared cutting logic. Tests and reference cases cover point and line inputs, overlapping polygon parts, and geometry-less input errors.
Symmetrical Difference
crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, crates/analysis/tests/reference/*, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Symmetrical Difference retains portions covered by only one input layer. Tests and reference data cover output geometry, selections, and geometry-less input behavior.
Update polygons
crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, crates/analysis/tests/reference/*, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Update retains uncovered input portions and appends selected update polygons whole. It matches fields by exact name or, if needed, case-insensitively, then converts values to input field types. Tests cover conversions and ambiguous matches.
Split features into layers
crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Split clips selected input features by selected polygons, with optional grouping by field value. Empty outputs are omitted, and requests with more than 1,000 split areas fail. Tests cover grouping, naming, selections, and boundaries.
Tool listings and supporting coverage
GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md, README.md, ROADMAP.md, crates/assistant/skills/geoprocessing/SKILL.md, crates/engine/src/cmd/workflows.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/icons.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, docs/comparison/index.md, crates/analysis/tests/reference/generate.py
Tool listings, icons, skill descriptions, and capability documentation include the new operations. The reference generator and fixtures cover Erase, Symmetrical Difference, and Update.

Bug (low): f.trunc() as i64 saturates silently for finite values outside the i64 range, so a value like 1e30 in an update polygon becomes i64::MAX in the input's integer field. Out-of-range values should become empty, like NaN does in the next arm.

Fixed in e6e1853: a float outside i64's range (or not a number) now becomes empty rather than being clamped. Tests cover ±1e30, 2⁶³ itself (empty) and -2⁶³ (kept). cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass locally.

Quality (doc/behaviour mismatch, low): the cap counts split areas (groups), including ones that will hold no features and be dropped. The docs say Split "stops rather than write more than 1,000 layers". A run with 1,001 split areas, 900 of them empty, errors even though it would write 101 layers. Either count only non-empty groups, or reword the error and the docs to "more than 1,000 split areas".

Confidence: high on the mismatch, medium on which fix is wanted.

Reworded in e6e1853. The cap bounds the work, which grows with split areas, so counting only non-empty layers would mean doing all of it before refusing. The constant is now MAX_SPLIT_AREAS, the error reads "Split takes at most 1000 split areas", and the guide says empty areas count too. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass locally.

Bug (low): the blank check runs before control characters are dropped, so a value made only of control characters (for example "\u{1}", which trim() does not remove) gives an empty name, and the layer is called parcels_. Falling back to the id when the cleaned name is empty would match the documented rule.

Design question (low): Symmetrical Difference keeps input features with no geometry, with empty overlay attributes. The doc defines it as "the pieces exactly one layer covers", and a feature without geometry covers nothing. Union keeps them because it is a union, so following Union is defensible. This is worth stating explicitly, or dropping them for SymDiff, before it becomes an expected behaviour.

Confidence: medium.

Kept on purpose, and now stated in the guide (e6e1853): like Union, Symmetrical Difference keeps an input feature without geometry, with empty overlay attributes, so no input row is lost. Intersect is the only overlay tool that drops them, because it keeps only overlaps.

AGENTS.md / process (low): Erase's input parameter kind changes from PolygonLayer to Layer. CONTRIBUTING.md asks for a proposal issue before "changing an existing command's ... parameters", and this PR says "Related issue: None". The change is a widening and the code is covered by tests, so this is a process note, not a code defect. The PR may want to link the discussion or say why no issue was needed.

No caller changes: Erase keeps its id and its parameter names, and every call that worked before gives the same result (a polygon input goes through the same difference). The parameter now also accepts point and line layers. The coordinate-first rule protects existing ids and parameters that the CLI, Python, MCP and saved scripts rely on, and none of those break.

Bugs

  • Float-to-integer conversion in update saturates silently for finite values outside the i64 range, so 1e30 becomes i64::MAX. Out-of-range values should become empty, as NaN does. Confidence: high on behaviour, low on impact. (inline)
  • A split value made only of control characters gives an empty layer name (parcels_). Falling back to the id would match the documented rule. Confidence: high, low impact. (inline)

Security

  • No issues found. The new code has no unwrap, expect, panic or indexing in non-test paths; it uses get() throughout, and the split cap bounds the layer count.

Performance

  • No material issues. Split and update reuse the extent index and dissolve each input feature once. Point erase scans the mask per point without an index, which is acceptable at current scale.

Quality

  • The 1,000-layer cap counts split areas, including empty ones, but the docs say "layers written". A run with 900 empty areas and 101 populated ones would still error. Confidence: high on the mismatch. (inline)
  • Symmetrical Difference keeps input features without geometry, which sits oddly with "the pieces exactly one layer covers". Confidence: medium. (inline)
  • The loop variable part shadows the part() helper. Nit. (inline)

AGENTS.md

  • CONTRIBUTING.md asks for a proposal issue before changing an existing command's parameters. Erase's input kind changes from PolygonLayer to Layer, and the PR says "Related issue: None". This is a widening, so it is a process note. Confidence: medium. (inline)
  • Checked and fine: the Feature Analysis list (workflows.rs "feature" gallery) includes the three new tools. The ROADMAP and GEOLIBRE_PARITY updates are present. Layer names are renumbered by add_dataset, as the docs state. Icons and tool ids don't collide with existing names.

I did not run the test suite or the wasm build; I checked by reading only.

- Update: a float beyond an integer field's range becomes empty, not
  the largest integer.
- Split groups by the exact value: floats that display alike (0.0000012
and 0.0000014) stay apart; -0 is 0. A value of only control characters
is named by its id, not left blank.
- Split's cap counts split areas, empty ones included, as it bounds the
work: its error and the guide say so.
- The guide says Symmetrical Difference keeps input features without
  geometry, as Union does.
- The overlay loop's part is a piece, not shadowing part().

Changes since your review of 7a2ef6f, in e6e1853: Split now groups by the exact value (your finding), Update leaves an out-of-range float empty in an integer field, a Split value of only control characters is named by its id, the Split cap is described as counting split areas, and the guide says Symmetrical Difference keeps input rows without geometry.

Doc vs. behaviour (low, high confidence). This says two update fields matching an input field ignoring case is an error. find_field_case_insensitive returns the exact match first, so the error only fires when no field matches exactly. The test at line ~828 relies on that. Suggest making the doc say so:

Performance (low-medium, medium confidence). Erase now takes points as well as lines and polygons. Every feature is run through dissolved(g) and then part against the whole erase mask, with no extent prefilter. cut() does prefilter with ExtentIndex. For points, mask.intersects costs O(mask edges) per point, so a large point layer against a detailed erase layer gets slow. Clip has the same pattern, so this is not new in kind. Consider skipping features whose extent misses the mask's extent, and keeping them as they are.

Fixed in bef2e43. Erase now goes through cut() with an ExtentIndex over the erase polygons, as Update does, so each feature is only tried against the polygons whose extent meets it. A feature none of them overlaps is kept as it is, parts and coordinates (regression: erase_keeps_a_feature_no_erase_polygon_overlaps_as_it_is). The GEOS reference cases for erase of polygons, lines and points still pass. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass locally.

Code review

Bugs. None found. I traced cut, overlay, update, split, part, converted and the field lookup. Erase, Update and Split handle empty masks, touching-only features, selections and the 1,000-area cap correctly. The i64 bounds in converted are right.

Security. None found. No new unsafe, unchecked indexing or external input paths. Parameter handling goes through get() and s(), and the hostile-params cases were added.

Performance

  • Erase now runs every feature through dissolved and part against the full erase mask, with no extent prefilter. Points cost O(mask edges) each via mask.intersects. Clip has the same pattern, so this is not new in kind. (Low–medium, medium confidence. Inline comment posted.)

Quality

  • msg.push_str(&format!(…)) in Split could be a single format!. (Nit, high confidence. Inline comment posted.)

AGENTS.md

  • The update doc says two update fields matching ignoring case is an error. An exact name match wins first, so the error only fires when no field matches exactly. (Low, high confidence. Inline comment posted.)
  • AGENTS.md and docs/contributing.md ask for screenshots with visible UI changes and a 1366 px tab screenshot for ribbon controls. The PR body describes the ui_shot results but attaches or links no images. (Medium confidence. I can only see the description, so images may exist elsewhere.)
  • Help and summary strings in TOOLS are plain English literals. This matches the existing analysis specs, so I did not flag it.

I checked the reference corpus generator (generate.py) against the Rust semantics for Update and Erase, and it matches. Nothing was approved, merged or changed.

Assert which point each float layer contains.

The test checks only layer names and feature counts. The two row_0.000001 layers have the same name and one feature each, so exchanging their clipped points still passes. Add an assertion that the layer built from the 0.000_001_2 zone contains the point at x=0.25, and that the layer built from the 0.000_001_4 zone contains the point at x=0.75.

Add a success test at exactly MAX_SPLIT_AREAS split areas.

split_refuses_more_split_areas_than_it_takes builds 1,001 zones and checks only that the error contains at most. No test checks that exactly 1,000 areas succeed. A regression that rejects the 1,000th area still returns the same error for 1,001 zones, so this test and the suite would both pass. A success test at the limit closes that gap.

Each zone without a field forms its own group. Groups with no output features are counted in the result message and left out of the layers, so the new test only needs to assert that split succeeds.

✅ Action performed

Full review finished.

- Erase cuts each feature with the erase polygons whose extent meets
it (cut(), as Update), not the union of them all: a feature none
overlaps is kept as it is, parts and coordinates.
- Update's doc and the guide say a field is ambiguous only when no
  update field matches it exactly.
- Split tests check which point each float layer holds, and that
exactly 1000 split areas are accepted.

Follow-up in bef2e43, beyond the inline replies:

  • CodeRabbit's two test nitpicks: split_keeps_floats_apart_that_display_alike now checks which point each float layer holds, and split_accepts_exactly_max_split_areas runs Split with exactly 1000 areas.
  • Screenshots (github-actions' review): no ribbon control is added. The three tools join the existing Analyze › Feature Analysis menu and the Tools pane, and their icons are drawn in code. The local ui_shot runs (light and dark) show them there and the Split form; I can attach the images if a maintainer wants them.

Changes since your approval of e6e1853, in bef2e43: Erase now cuts each feature with only the erase polygons whose extent meets it (cut() with the extent index, as Update), keeping untouched features as they are; Update's doc and the guide are more precise about ambiguous fields; and your two test nitpicks (float layer contents, exactly 1000 split areas) are in.

Bug (medium confidence): crs_incomplete is not carried over. Erase now copies the input's CRS, but not its crs_incomplete flag. If the input lost features on import (a Shapefile with skipped records, or src.lost_to_crs()), the output claims a complete CRS and reads as complete. That matters because PMTiles export and define_projection refuse incomplete layers, and merge.rs already propagates the flag. Update (around line 1314) and Split (around line 1432) have the same gap, and so does overlay_schema (line 1096), which predates this PR.

Same gap as the Erase comment above: out.crs is copied but crs_incomplete is not. Add out.crs_incomplete = ds.crs_incomplete; here so an update of a layer that lost features isn't reported as complete.

Performance (medium confidence). cut intersects the feature with every zone it may meet, even when the caller only wants the outside part. Erase and Update discard these inside pieces and use them only to learn which zones were hit. The rest is then computed again as a difference against the same zones. That roughly doubles the polygon boolean operations per feature on large Erase or Update runs. A hit test that doesn't build the intersection, or a path that skips it when keeps_inside() is false, would avoid this. The edge-inclusive rule for lines and points needs to be kept.

Fixed in 32b8e1c. Erase and Update now use a new outside() instead of cut(). It takes the zones whose extent meets the feature, makes one mask (that zone itself, or their union), and cuts once, without the per-zone intersections. A feature the mask doesn't meet is kept as it is: for a polygon that means no overlap, checked with relate; a line or point is cut wherever it meets the mask, since an edge counts as inside. So the touch and edge rules are unchanged, and the GEOS reference cases for erase and update still pass. cut() is now only used by the overlays, which keep the inside pieces. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass locally.

Nit: s(p, "field") returns "" for a non-text value, so "field": 5 silently groups each polygon into its own layer and raises no error. The other tools share this pattern, but for Split a mistyped field silently changes the output. Consider rejecting a present non-string field.

Code review

The overlay logic reads as sound. cut keeps untouched features' coordinates, handles touch-only and edge cases consistently, and the new junk-parameter cases are in place. I found no crash paths in the non-test code, since every index is get()-based. I did not build or run the tests; the review is by reading only.

Bugs

  • crs_incomplete is not carried into Erase, Update and Split outputs (medium confidence). These tools copy crs but not the crs_incomplete flag. A layer that lost features on import would then look complete, and PMTiles export and define_projection would not refuse it. merge.rs already propagates the flag. overlay_schema has the same gap, but it predates this PR. Inline comments are on the Erase, Update and Split lines.

Security

  • None found. The new code only handles in-process data and adds no I/O, shell or unsafe code.

Performance

  • cut intersects every meeting zone even when Erase or Update discard the inside pieces (medium confidence). The boolean work roughly doubles per feature on large runs. Inline comment on cut.

Quality

  • A non-text field silently disables grouping in Split (low confidence, nit). "field": 5 gives one layer per polygon with no error. Inline comment on the field parsing.
  • Grammar: the split message reads "1 split areas held no features". Its test asserts the same string, so change both together.
  • cut(…, outside: bool) returns a tuple. Two functions, one for the inside pieces and one for the rest, would read more clearly.

AGENTS.md

  • The PR body describes headless ui_shot evidence but attaches no screenshots. AGENTS asks for screenshots of substantial visible changes, such as the new icons and the Split form.
  • The ribbon, the ROADMAP and GEOLIBRE_PARITY updates, and the cargo xtask gates are covered as far as the diff shows. I did not confirm the cargo xtask gates by running them.

Limit Erase's per-feature zone work, or keep the base single mask.

Erase now calls cut for each feature. cut intersects the feature with every erase zone it meets, then unions the hit zones. Base built one mask for the whole layer. With many dense, overlapping erase zones, Erase CPU time grows with the zone count. A fix must keep the hit set and edge-touch results unchanged.

Assert the empty-area count in the exact-cap Split test.

split_accepts_exactly_max_split_areas checks only that the message contains held no features. That substring matches any count. Zones 0 and 101 each hold one input point at a corner, so 998 of the 1000 split areas are empty. Asserting the exact count makes the test fail if an empty area is dropped from the count. The current assertion would still pass in that case.

Bug (high confidence): text converted to an integer field is clamped, not emptied. Value::parse(t, Integer) falls back to f as i64 on a float, and Rust's float-to-int cast saturates (and maps NaN to 0). So an update value of "1e30" lands as i64::MAX, "-1e30" as i64::MIN, and "NaN" as 0. This contradicts the doc on converted ("beyond an integer field's range becomes empty", "rather than clamped"), and the tests only cover the Float path. Routing text through the float arm fixes it:

Suggested change
(Value::Text(t), _) => Value::parse(t, ty),

A regression test with Value::Text("1e30") and Value::Text("NaN") into an Integer field would pin this down.

Possible bug (low confidence, about 30%): the touch test runs on the raw feature, not the dissolved one. part's doc says a feature of several polygons must go through dissolved first, because its parts must not overlap. cut follows that rule, but this relate call uses the undissolved g. If relate misreads overlapping parts of a multi-part polygon, a feature that really overlaps a zone could be classed as only touching and kept uncut, so Erase or Update would leave the erased area in place. Running the test on the dissolved geometry keeps it consistent with the rest of the function:

Suggested change
let geo_g = to_geo(g);
let geo_g = to_geo(&dissolved(g));

A test with a multi-part feature whose parts overlap and only touch the erase polygon would settle it.

Changed in 9de0c85: outside() dissolves the feature once and uses that for the tests and the cut. The existing erase_unions_an_input_feature_whose_parts_overlap (two overlapping parts, one overlapping the erase square) already passed on the raw feature, so this is for consistency rather than a reproduced misread. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass locally.

Quality: the ambiguous-field check runs after all the geometry work. from is built after the per-feature outside loop, so an input with an ambiguous field name (Id/ID in the update layer) only fails once every input polygon has been cut. Building from before the loop makes the error come first, with no wasted work. The check doesn't depend on the loop, so the move is safe.

Moved in 9de0c85: the field map is built before the geometry loop, so an ambiguous field fails first.

Performance (low severity, about 40%): the union of the nearby zones is rebuilt for every input feature. The old Erase unioned the erase layer once. Now every feature whose extent meets two or more zones calls union_all again on the same zone set. On a layer with many parcels crossing shared zone boundaries, that repeats the same union work many times. A small cache keyed by the sorted list of near zone indices (for example a HashMap<Vec<usize>, MultiPolygon> passed in by the caller) would avoid it. Worth measuring on a large sample before deciding.

Addressed in 9de0c85, following CodeRabbit's matching follow-up: outside() now tests each nearby zone against the feature on its own and unions only the zones that actually cut it. A feature cut by one zone uses that zone as it is, and one cut by none is kept without any union. A cache keyed by zone sets would add state for a cost that's now limited to features cut by two or more zones; I'd rather measure that before adding it. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass locally.

Nit: the doc parenthetical "(a polygon: overlaps)" is unclear. It reads as if polygons are a special category, but the rule is the same for any geometry: a feature no zone meets is returned untouched. Something like "A feature that no zone meets is kept as it is" would be clearer. Also, the overlay_zones doc (line 1082) lists overlay, update and split as the parameters it serves, but Erase now uses it too, so erase belongs in that list.

Both fixed in 9de0c85: outside()'s doc now says a feature no zone cuts is kept as it is (a polygon that at most touches them, a line or point that doesn't meet them), and overlay_zones lists erase.

Bugs

  • Text values converted into an integer field are clamped instead of emptied: "1e30" becomes i64::MAX, "NaN" becomes 0. This contradicts the converted doc and its tests only cover the float path. Inline suggestion posted. Confidence: high.
  • outside runs its touch test on the undissolved feature, though part requires overlapping parts to be dissolved first. A misread could leave an erased area in place. Confidence: low (~30%). Inline suggestion posted.

Performance

  • outside rebuilds union_all of the nearby zones for every input feature, where the old Erase unioned once. Worth measuring on a large sample. Confidence: low (~40%).

Quality

  • In update, the ambiguous-field check (from) runs after all the geometry work. Moving it before the loop makes the error fail fast. Confidence: high, minor.
  • Nits: the outside doc parenthetical "(a polygon: overlaps)" is unclear; the overlay_zones doc omits erase; the Split output prefix is not sanitised for control characters, while value-derived names are. Confidence: high, minor.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. The new non-test code has no unwrap, expect, or indexing. Tool names and summaries go through tl!. The icons are drawn in code. No dependencies changed. Docs, ROADMAP, README and GEOLIBRE_PARITY were updated.
  • Checked and fine: the Overlay refactor preserves the Intersect, Identity and Union paths; the coordinate spaces match (to_geo and to_multipolygon both project to Mercator); the layer-name dedupe in add_dataset covers Split's outputs; find_field_case_insensitive prefers an exact match before reporting ambiguity.
  • Not verified: I could not compile or run the tests, and the GEOS reference expectations are unchecked.

Test each zone before the union in outside().

When a feature's extent meets two or more zone extents, outside() unions those zones before testing geometry. Features that meet no zone still pay for the union on every Erase and Update call. Test each zone's geometry before the union, or union only the zones the feature meets.

Propagate the overlay layer's incomplete flag to overlay outputs.

Erase, Update, Split, and the overlay tools derive their geometry from the overlay layer. keep_source_crs and overlay_schema copy only the input's crs_incomplete. If the overlay layer lost features on import, the output is marked complete, and vector-tile export accepts it. At each call site that reads the overlay layer, also set out.crs_incomplete from that layer.

- outside() tests each nearby zone against the feature and unions only
the ones that cut it (one is used as it is), on the dissolved feature
for the tests and the cut alike; none means the feature is kept.
- Text converted into an integer field reads as an integer, else as a
float would, so "1e30" or "NaN" is empty, not clamped.
- An output is marked incomplete when the layer it is overlaid with
lost features on reading, not only the input.
- Update checks for an ambiguous field before any geometry work.
- Doc wording for outside() and overlay_zones().

Follow-up in 9de0c85:

  • CodeRabbit's two follow-ups: outside() tests each zone before any union (see the inline reply on the union cost), and an output is now also marked incomplete when the layer it's overlaid with (overlay, erase, update or split features) lost features on reading. The regression test runs every tool with each layer marked.
  • Split's output prefix (github-actions): it's the output name, which Split handles as every tool handles its output name. Only the value-derived part, which comes from data, is cleaned.

Changes since your approval of 32b8e1c, in 9de0c85: both your follow-ups (outside() tests each zone before any union; the overlay layer's incomplete flag reaches the output), text into an integer field is no longer clamped, and Update checks for an ambiguous field before the geometry work.

Text that parses as a non-finite number reaches a Double field (confidence: medium). Value::parse uses Rust's f64 parser, which accepts NaN, inf and infinity, so Update writes Value::Float(NaN) or Float(inf) into a Double field from text such as "NaN". The Integer path (converted, Text arm above) treats non-finite values as empty, and the doc comment says text that isn't a number becomes empty. As written, the two numeric types behave differently, and the non-finite value shows as NaN/inf in the table and reaches later statistics. JSON export turns it into null, so the data changes shape on save.

Suggested fix, plus a test asserting "NaN", "inf" and "1e400" become Null for FieldType::Double:

Suggested change
(Value::Text(t), _) => Value::parse(t, ty),
(Value::Text(t), FieldType::Double) => t.trim().parse::<f64>().ok().filter(|f| f.is_finite()).map_or(Value::Null, Value::Float),
(Value::Text(t), _) => Value::parse(t, ty),

Fixed in 5a6a438: text into a Double field must read as a finite number, so "NaN", "inf", "-infinity" and "1e400" come out empty, as they do in an integer field. Tests added. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass locally.

Quality: the "part outside the zones" selection is written twice (confidence: high). The three-way match here (no hit → g.clone(), one zone → that zone's mask, several → their union) repeats almost line for line in outside() (around line 1224). The two also decide "overlaps" differently: cut() counts a zone when part(.., true) returns Some, while outside() uses relate (intersects and not touches). Those can disagree on slivers and touching edges, so a future change to one may not reach the other. A small shared helper taking the hit zones would stop the copies drifting apart, and a sentence noting why the two tests differ would help the next reader.

Done in 5a6a438: cut() and outside() now take the part outside the zones that cut a feature through one helper, rest_outside(). Its doc explains why they find those zones differently: cut builds each inside part anyway, so a zone cuts when that part is non-empty; outside builds none, so it tests each zone with a predicate. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass locally.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the surrounding helpers in crates/analysis/src/tools.rs (find_field_case_insensitive, part, dissolved, ExtentIndex, Value::parse). I could not build or run the tests in this environment, so compile and test results are unverified.

Bugs

  • Non-finite numbers reach Double fields via Update (medium confidence). converted() sends text through Value::parse, which accepts NaN, inf and infinity. The Integer path blanks these, so the two numeric types disagree. Inline comment posted with a suggested fix.
  • Silent fallback in dissolved() (low confidence). If the union of a multi-polygon feature fails, dissolved returns the overlapping original. part() then relies on the no-overlap precondition, so the result can be wrong without any error. Worth an error or a test.

Security

  • None found. Split layer names come from attribute values, but they stay in-memory layer labels (add_dataset), not file paths, so there is no traversal risk.

Performance

  • Symmetrical Difference computes the full inside pieces in cut() only to record which zones are overlapped (confidence: low). The cost is probably acceptable for this change.

Quality

  • Duplicated "outside the zones" logic and two overlap tests (high confidence). cut() and outside() repeat the same three-way match, and they decide overlap differently. Inline comment posted.
  • Boolean conversion (low confidence, nit). Any text other than true/yes/1/y becomes false, not empty. The doc only mentions numeric fields, so this is probably intended, but it could be stated.
  • Split limit wording (nit). The docs say the 1,000 limit applies "before any work", but the check runs after every split polygon has been converted, and it counts distinct groups when a field is given.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant on the points I checked. No unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code. Split caps areas at 1,000 and names at 64 characters. The hostile_params_never_panic cases were extended. Docs, the ribbon-free tool entries, the icons drawn in code and the parity pages were updated. Messages use format!, which matches the existing analysis tools.

Add a clean-input case to the CRS flag test.

The changed test checks only that crs_incomplete is true. An implementation that always sets the flag on overlay outputs would pass every assertion. The test does not detect over-marking of complete outputs, and no analysis test checks that complete inputs leave the flag clear. This is a coverage gap. It does not cause a current production failure.

The fixture parcels_and_zones() builds both layers with Dataset::new, which starts with the flag clear. A complete-input case that asserts !crs_incomplete on each output would fail under an always-true flag. The suggested test below does that.

    • Boolean conversion is now documented on converted (true for true, yes, 1 or y, else false, as typing it would give).
    • The guide and the cap's doc say Split stops before clipping anything, not before any work.
    • dissolved()'s fallback predates this PR (feat(analysis): add Identity and Union overlay tools #982); it returns the feature as it is only when the union produces nothing.
    • Symmetrical Difference does build the inside pieces it drops, and they also give the hit list that the outside parts are cut with. As you note, the cost is acceptable here.

cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass locally.

@coderabbitai full review

Changes since your review of 9de0c85, in 5a6a438: your skill finding (Split lists all its layers among those added), your nitpick (a complete-input CRS flag test), non-finite text kept out of Double fields, and a shared rest_outside() helper for cut() and outside().

Performance (medium confidence). Erase used to union all erase polygons once in union_of. Now, whenever an input feature is cut by two or more zones, rest_outside recomputes union_all over those zones for every such feature, and outside also runs a relate per candidate zone. On layers where many features straddle several overlapping erase polygons, this is a real slowdown compared with the old single mask. Consider building a shared, lazily cached union of the erase zones, or grouping features by their zone set, before merging. This is not a small self-contained fix, so no suggestion block.

This is the trade-off from the earlier rounds. Erase's old single union made every feature's difference pay for the whole erase layer. Now each feature pays only for the zones that actually cut it, and there's no union at all when one zone or none does. Repeated unions over the same zone set only happen for features cut by two or more of the same zones. A cache keyed by zone sets would add state for a cost that hasn't been measured, so I'd rather leave it until a real layer shows it matters.

Quality (nit). keep_source_crs also propagates crs_incomplete, which the name does not say. It is called from Erase, Update, the overlay schema and Split. A name such as inherit_source_metadata would read more accurately at each call site.

Leaving the name: its doc says it sets both the CRS and the incomplete flag, and the flag is part of the source-CRS state (a layer marked incomplete lost features to its CRS on reading). All four callers want both together.

let value = field.and_then(|i| f.attrs.get(i)).filter(|v| !v.is_null());
// -0 is 0, in the key and the name alike.
let value = value.map(|v| if let Value::Float(f) = v { Value::Float(f + 0.0) } else { v.clone() });
let named = value.map(|v| (split_key(&v), split_name(&v.to_string()))).filter(|(_, name)| !name.is_empty());

Quality (low). Layer names for Double split values come from the display text, which keeps six decimals. A value like 0.5 becomes row_0.500000, and values that differ only past the sixth decimal share a name and get numbered. The grouping is correct, since the key is exact, but the names may be surprising. A shortest-round-trip form, as split_key uses, would give cleaner names. Please confirm that the six-decimal form is intended.

The layer name doesn't keep six fixed decimals. Value's Display (crates/data/src/value.rs) prints a fractional float as (v * 1e6).round() / 1e6 with {}, so 0.5 is named row_0.5, and only values that differ past the sixth decimal share a name (and add_dataset numbers the second one). That's intended: names match how the value shows in the attribute table, while the grouping key stays exact. split_keeps_floats_apart_that_display_alike covers the shared-name case.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md, and the surrounding helpers in tools.rs (part, dissolved, find_field_case_insensitive, ExtentIndex, converted). I could not build or run the tests in this environment, so the checks below are by reading only.

Bugs: none confirmed. I checked the following and found them consistent:

  • Erase, Update and Split logic, including zones that only touch a feature.
  • Point and line handling on edges, with the edge counted as inside.
  • Case-insensitive field matching, which prefers an exact match and errors on a real ambiguity.
  • Type conversions in converted, including the i64 bounds and NaN/inf text.
  • Split grouping, the 1,000-area cap, and the -0.0 normalisation.

Security: nothing found. Split layer names come from input data, but nothing in the repo writes files named after layers, so there is no path risk.

Performance (medium confidence):

  • Erase used to union the erase polygons once. Now, for each input feature cut by two or more zones, rest_outside recomputes union_all over those zones, and outside runs a relate per candidate zone. Layers where many features straddle several overlapping erase polygons may slow down noticeably. (crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1203)

Quality:

  • keep_source_crs (tools.rs:901) also propagates crs_incomplete, which its name does not say. Nit.
  • Split layer names for Double values use the six-decimal display text, so 0.5 becomes row_0.500000 and near-equal values get numbered. The grouping itself is exact. Please confirm the naming is intended. Low confidence. (tools.rs:1459)
  • split is about 75 lines and mixes grouping with clipping. Extracting the grouping step would make it easier to read. Nit.

AGENTS.md:

  • Repo rules appear to be met. The new tools and hostile_params_never_panic cases are present, no unwrap, expect or panic appears in non-test code, the wasm-safe code uses no std::time, the icons are drawn in code, and ROADMAP and GEOLIBRE_PARITY are updated as CONTRIBUTING requires.
  • Interface strings in the analysis crate are plain literals, as in existing tools. The analysis crate has no tl! usage, so this is not a new deviation.

Three inline comments are posted: tools.rs:1203 (performance), tools.rs:901 (naming) and tools.rs:1459 (split names).
