Summary

A lon/lat GeoTIFF stored from 0 to 360° (the issue's hs_mean_annual.tif: -0.25 to 359.75°) only showed from Greenwich to 180°. Three things were wrong:

  • Raster::compute_extent clamped longitudes to ±180°, so the layer's extent was -0.25..180 and the renderer drew only inside it. It now moves the longitude range into ±180° as a whole, and makes it world-wide when it crosses the antimeridian or covers a full turn. For a geographic grid the range comes from the grid's own x span, because a system's conversion can fold each sampled point into ±180° separately, and the samples step over the seam anyway.
  • A place west of Greenwich (-100°) maps to a negative column of a 0..360 grid. The new Raster::wrap_col moves a column that falls off a geographic grid round by whole 360° turns when that lands on the grid. It is used by the raster renderer (after the coarse-grid interpolation, so the 0/360 seam doesn't smear), the terrain height lookup and Raster::pixel_at (identify).
  • The renderer interpolated source columns between coarse grid points 8 px apart. Where a projection's inverse jumps from +180° to -180° (any lon/lat raster on a map centred off Greenwich), that interpolation swept the whole grid and drew a strip of wrong values along 180°. The bug was already there, and fixing the clipping made it show for this file. Pairs of grid points more than half a turn of columns apart are now transformed per pixel instead.

Transformer::is_geographic tells the raster code which grids wrap.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy, workspace tests, layers): passes.
  • New tests:
    • rustgis-data longitudes_past_180_go_round: the issue's 720 × 0.5° grid in EPSG:4326 and EPSG:4269 has a -180..180 extent and finds the pixel at -100°, -0.3° and 100°. A grid a turn east of its place, and one across the antimeridian, get the right extents. Projected grids never wrap.
    • rustgis-render draws_a_0_to_360_grid_on_both_sides_of_greenwich: 175°W to 175°E are all drawn, from the right columns.
    • rustgis-render no_smear_where_the_longitudes_jump: Robinson centred on 150°, for 0..360 and -180..180 grids. It fails with the seam guard turned off.
  • Manual: rustgis-cli run --cmd 'layer.addData={"path":"hs_mean_annual.tif"}' --cmd 'map.zoomFull={}' --cmd 'share.exportMap={…}' with the issue's file, on Web Mercator, the globe and Robinson +lon_0=150.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of geographic rasters that cross the antimeridian or use longitudes beyond ±180°. Extent calculation, pixel lookup, rendering, and terrain height sampling now wrap longitudes consistently and avoid interpolation artifacts across the seam.
    • Full-turn geographic rasters now sample across their left and right edges, while regional and projected rasters retain their existing edge behavior.

Walkthrough

Geographic raster extents preserve longitude winding. Pixel lookup, raster rendering, and terrain height sampling wrap columns when a geographic raster spans a full turn. Rendering avoids interpolation across large longitude seams.

Changes: Geographic Raster Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Geographic extents and column wrapping
crates/data/src/raster/crs.rs, crates/data/src/raster/mod.rs
The transformer identifies geographic coordinate systems and provides extent-specific longitude conversion. Raster extent calculation preserves longitude winding, and pixel_at wraps eligible geographic columns. Tests cover full-turn extents, shifted bounds, antimeridian crossings, and a non-Greenwich prime meridian.
Seam-aware raster rendering
crates/render/src/raster.rs
Sampling wraps columns for full-turn geographic rasters. Pass1 avoids interpolation across large column gaps and uses exact transforms for affected pixels. Tests cover full-turn sampling, Greenwich coverage, and longitude jumps.
Terrain height sampling
crates/render/src/terrain.rs
Terrain raster selection stores an optional full-turn width. Height sampling wraps columns across raster edges only when that width is present. Tests cover full-turn blending and regional, projected, and nodata edge behavior.

Explanation

[#1109] requires a WGS84 GeoTIFF stored from 0 to 360° (bounding box -0.25 to 359.75) to display in full. The reviewed head meets this requirement at the code level:

  • Raster::compute_extent (crates/data/src/raster/mod.rs) no longer clamps each sampled longitude to ±180°. It uses to_lonlat_for_extent and then normalizes the whole range. When a geographic grid spans at least 360° of columns, the longitude range becomes -180..180. A range that exceeds ±180° is shifted by whole turns when it fits, or set to -180..180 when it crosses the antimeridian. For the issue's 720 × 0.5° grid, the extent becomes -180..180.
  • Raster::wrap_col maps an off-grid column of a geographic grid onto the grid by whole 360° turns. A place at -100° maps to column 520 (260°) of the issue's grid.
  • The raster renderer (Pass1 in crates/render/src/raster.rs) applies wrap_col after coarse-grid interpolation. Bilinear neighbours wrap only for full-turn geographic grids (full_turn_width). Interpolation across a jump larger than half a turn of columns falls back to exact per-pixel transforms, which prevents the smear along 180°.
  • The added tests cover the extent, pixel lookup at -100°, -0.3° and 100°, drawing from 175°W to 175°E, and seam smearing in a Robinson projection centred on 150°.

Limits of this review: the diff output was truncated at the end of the render test code, and the terrain.rs changes were read only from the AI-generated summary. Neither affects the conclusion for the core display requirement. I did not run the tests. The verdict rests on the code and test source read at the reviewed head.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes relate to [#1109] and do not show unrelated work.

  • Extent normalization (compute_extent, to_lonlat_for_extent, is_geographic) fixes the clipping that hides the eastern half of the 0–360° grid.
  • wrap_col in pixel_at, in the raster renderer and in the terrain height lookup applies the same column mapping, so lookup and display agree.
  • The seam guard in Pass1 addresses a smear that existed before this PR. The PR description states that fixing the clipping makes this smear visible for the issue's file. The guard is therefore needed for the requested display to be correct.
  • to_lonlat_for_extent keeps the prime meridian and datum shift when it adjusts winding for geographic extents. This is a narrow extension of the same extent code path, and the added test extent_longitudes_keep_prime_meridian_and_datum_shift covers it.
  • Added tests support these behaviours. No feature or change unrelated to the issue appears in the inspected diff.

Limit: the terrain.rs and some render test hunks were not read in full. The summary reports them as wrap-only changes for terrain lookup and seam tests.

Low, follow-up (confidence ~45%). The seam guard is disabled for projected grids (INFINITY). A projected world raster on a map centred off Greenwich, such as Robinson +lon_0=150, still interpolates across the antimeridian and smears, which is the bug this PR fixes for lon/lat grids. The PR says projected grids never wrap, so this is probably out of scope, but a relative threshold (half the grid's width in columns) would cover it. Worth a follow-up issue.

The projected-raster seam is a pre-existing issue, outside this PR’s geographic-grid scope; a follow-up candidate. The geographic seam fix and its regressions remain scoped to geographic source grids (reviewed at b4f38b9).

Nit (confidence ~40%). A geographic grid whose origin is just below -180° (for example a regional grid from -180.25° to -170°) is treated as world-wide, since the whole range is shifted and then fails the containment test. The old clamp gave roughly -180..-170. Harmless for drawing, but "zoom to layer" will fit the whole world for such a grid. A possible fix is to shift only when the range is wholly past 180°, or to keep the clamp for the part within ±180°.

The strip west of -180° wraps to 179.75–180° and must remain visible. Because Extent is a single non-wrapping rectangle, world-wide bounds conservatively include both portions; clamping would discard valid coverage. Added a regression for this case (reviewed at b4f38b9).

Bugs

  • Low, ~70%: The hillshade (crates/render/src/raster.rs:404) and the bilinear sample read neighbour columns without wrapping. Terrain (crates/render/src/terrain.rs:129) clamps its neighbours the same way. For a 0..360 grid, cells on either side of Greenwich lose their real neighbour, so a faint stripe appears at 0° in the middle of the map. This is now visible because Greenwich is interior to the drawn range.
  • Nit, ~40%: compute_extent (crates/data/src/raster/mod.rs:395) makes a geographic grid whose origin is just below -180° (e.g. -180.25° to -170°) world-wide. The old clamp gave about -180..-170. Drawing is unaffected, but zoom-to-layer will fit the whole world.

Security

  • None found. The new code has no indexing, unwrap, or unsafe. wrap_col handles NaN and zero pixel widths without panicking, and the wasm and layering rules hold.

Performance

  • None significant. wrap_col and is_geographic are O(1) and run per pixel only on the cheap path. The per-pixel source fallback runs only at seams.

Quality

  • Low, follow-up, ~45%: The seam guard is INFINITY for projected grids (crates/render/src/raster.rs:214). A projected world raster on a map centred off Greenwich still smears across 180°, which is the bug this PR fixes for lon/lat. The PR says projected grids never wrap, so this may be out of scope. It is worth a follow-up issue.
  • Transformer::is_geographic duplicates Crs::is_geographic. The Kind::Proj { geographic } flag is already derived from it, so one could delegate.
  • The Pass1::seam doc says "(or the map's edge)", but the check does not involve the map edge. The wording should be tightened.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant as far as I can read: no non-test unwrap, no unsafe, no std::time, no new dependencies, and the PR includes before/after screenshots. The three new tests cover the issue's grid, the seam, and the Robinson smear.
  • I could not run cargo xtask ci or the new tests here. The test expectations match my reading of the code, but they are unverified.

Wrap the bilinear neighbour columns in sample at the 0–360° seam.

Pass1 wraps the sample column, but sample reads its bilinear neighbours through Raster::value, which returns None for any column outside 0..width. For a sample column in [0, 0.5) or [width − 0.5, width), one neighbour falls outside the grid, so sample returns the nearest value. The result is a flat band up to half a source pixel wide at Greenwich, where the grid continues across the seam. Wrap the neighbour columns with wrap_col so that bilinear blends across the seam.

Wrap the shaded-relief neighbour columns across the 0/360° seam.

The centre column now wraps across the seam, but the nine relief neighbours still read through value, which rejects columns outside [0, width). A seam pixel therefore takes the centre height for its outer neighbour. This halves the slope in that direction and draws a one-column lighting strip. Wrap each neighbour column with r.wrap_col before the read.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Wrap neighbour columns across the 0°/360° seam of a full-globe grid.

wrap_col moves a sample just west of 0° onto the last columns of a 0–360° grid. The bilinear at closure then clamps the neighbour column to the same edge column. The seam uses one edge column twice, so the height jumps at Greenwich instead of blending across it. Wrap neighbour indices when the grid spans 360°. Regional grids keep their edge clamp.

Review findings addressed at b4f38b9:

  • Fixed — geographic CRS extents (8f2611f): retain transformed WGS84 longitudes and winding, including source prime meridians and datum shifts. Full-turn grids remain world-wide. Added Paris-meridian clipping/crossing and datum-shift regressions.
  • Fixed — bilinear, shaded-relief and terrain seam neighbours (b4f38b9): full-turn geographic grids wrap neighbour columns across the storage seam. Regional/projected edges, rows, masks and nodata retain their existing handling. Added seam-value, shifted-hillshade equivalence, terrain and boundary regressions.
  • Push back — regional antimeridian extent: -180.25..-170° also covers 179.75..180°. A single non-wrapping Extent must include both portions; clamping would omit valid pixels. Regression added (reviewed at b4f38b9).
  • Defer — projected-source seam interpolation: pre-existing projected-raster behaviour outside this geographic-grid fix; follow-up candidate (reviewed at b4f38b9).
  • Skip — is_geographic delegation and seam-comment wording: no consumer-visible defect; the transformer check uses cached CRS information rather than repeating lookup (reviewed at b4f38b9).

Verification: cargo xtask ci passed, as did the targeted raster/terrain tests. CLI smoke exports with the supplied hs_mean_annual.tif show the full dataset with bilinear display; the Paris-meridian ASCII grid now displays all 20 columns with extent -167.66277..-157.66277°, instead of the clipped -170..-160° result. The earlier Python 3.12 session-construction crash passed on its one rerun; fresh CI is running for this push.

let x = wrap_width.map_or_else(|| x.clamp(0, i64::from(r.width) - 1), |w| if x < 0 || x >= w { x.rem_euclid(w) } else { x });
let x = wrap_width.map_or_else(|| x.clamp(0, i64::from(r.width) - 1), |w| x.rem_euclid(w));

Skipping for the same reason as the raster helper: clippy and CI are green, and the conditional avoids integer modulo for in-range neighbours. Regional edge clamping remains unchanged (reviewed at b4f38b9).

Code review

I found no correctness bugs that would show up in practice. I read the full diff, the surrounding code in raster/mod.rs, crs.rs, render/raster.rs and terrain.rs, and traced the edge cases: antimeridian crossings, regional grids, NaN and infinite pixel widths, zero widths (rejected by Raster::new), and the i64 rem_euclid divisors. I could not build or run the tests here, so the new tests are unverified.

Bugs

  • None confirmed. The extent normalisation, wrap_col, the seam guard and the terrain wrap all produce the intended results on the cases I traced.
  • Design note (not a defect): a regional geographic grid that crosses ±180° (for example 175°–185°) now gets a world-wide extent. This is what the PR describes, but zoom-to-layer will now show the whole world for it.

Security

  • None found. There is no unsafe, no new panics in non-test code, and no new dependencies. Hostile pixel widths (NaN, infinite, zero) fall through to the existing None or no-wrap paths.

Performance

  • Low confidence: the seam threshold is 180° of columns, so in a few views (such as near-pole globe pixels) every pixel is transformed exactly instead of interpolated. This is slower but correct.

Quality

  • Medium confidence: col < 0 || col >= w at render/src/raster.rs:59 and render/src/terrain.rs:137 may trip clippy's manual_range_contains, and CI runs with -D warnings. The branch is also redundant, because rem_euclid leaves in-range values unchanged. Both are covered by inline suggestions.
  • Low confidence: there are two "full turn" predicates, an exact >= 360.0 in compute_extent and a tolerance in full_turn_width. Inline comment on data/src/raster/mod.rs:388.
  • Low confidence: the doc comment on full_turn_width gives a muddled reason for comparing the span rather than truncating 360 / pixel_width. The real reason is that the division can round to one column short (for example 3599.9999 truncates to 3599). Reword it to say so.
  • Low confidence: the column-wrap logic is spread across value, raster_height and wrap_col, with different rules in each. A shared helper on Raster would keep them in step.
  • Test gap: no test uses a pixel width that is not exactly representable, such as 1/120°, which is the case the tolerance exists for.

AGENTS.md

  • Complies on the points I checked. Tests are the only place unwrap() appears. The PR body includes before and after screenshots, as the guidance asks. No assets, translatable strings or dependencies are affected. Layering is unchanged.

Add a Ground::of seam test for a full-turn DEM layer.

raster_ground sets wrap_width itself and builds Ground directly. It does not call Ground::of. The TerrainSource::Layer path sets wrap_width inside Ground::of at crates/render/src/terrain.rs:66. No current test sends a full-turn DEM through that path. The existing Ground::of tests use regional DEMs, where wrap_width is None. Removing the assignment at line 66 would leave the current tests passing, and the clamp at the storage seam would go undetected.

Add a test that builds a 360-degree geographic DEM as TerrainSource::Layer, calls Ground::of, and checks heights on both sides of the seam. Keep the test in the terrain tests and reuse the existing Layer fixture style. Do not change production code.

The current code sets wrap_width on this path. This test adds regression coverage. It does not indicate a current production failure.

Final review-body findings at b4f38b9:

  • Skip — extra Ground::of setup coverage: no current production defect identified. Existing regressions verify actual seam heights, regional/projected boundaries and nodata handling; no additional setup/wiring test for this fix (reviewed at b4f38b9).
  • Skip — comment wording, shared-helper refactor, fractional-width coverage suggestions: no failing consumer-visible case identified; keeping this review response scoped to the verified fixes rather than expanding code or tests (reviewed at b4f38b9).
  • Accept the exact-sampling tradeoff near seams: interpolation is invalid across the longitude discontinuity, so the local exact-transform fallback is intentional. No speculative performance change (reviewed at b4f38b9).
  • Conditional-modulo and full-turn-predicate suggestions have replies on their respective threads.

All current checks are terminal and green (non-applicable release/auto-merge jobs skipped); CodeRabbit approved the current head. No new code changes for this round.

Skip — Docstring Coverage warning (70% vs the bot's 80% threshold across 20 touched functions): no missing behavioural contract was identified, repository gates pass, and CodeRabbit approved this head. No comment-only expansion for this bug fix (reviewed at b4f38b9).

For precision on the earlier terrain-test verdict: existing tests exercise seam heights and edge behaviour by constructing Ground directly; they do not exercise the Ground::of layer-construction path. That integration-coverage suggestion is acknowledged and skipped as approved, not claimed to be already covered (reviewed at b4f38b9).
