Follow-up to #1126. This commit was pushed after #1126 was merged, so it never reached main. It covers points from the bot reviews there.

What

  • Less work per frame: the menu bar's signature, and any rebuild, is computed only when the language or the keymap's fingerprint changes, not every frame. The enabled state of items is still updated every frame.
  • Fingerprint covers commands: shortcuts_fingerprint now also hashes each binding's command and parameters, without allocating. A key given another command, or other parameters, now changes the fingerprint, so the menu's shortcut labels and the web app's list of browser keys follow it. Before, only the chord was hashed.
  • Menu choices kept when unsure: a menu choice is dropped only when both a key window and a main window are known and differ, meaning a native panel such as a file dialog is in front. When AppKit reports no main window, the choice is kept. That was the bot's suggestion on feat(macos): a native menu bar beside the ribbon #1126: AppKit can report no main window for the app's own window while it's inactive or during a sheet, and a Save or Undo would then be lost silently. The other side: a choice made while a file dialog is up and the main window is minimised now runs after the dialog closes instead of being dropped. I think running a choice late is better than losing it silently.

Tests

the_shortcuts_fingerprint_follows_the_keymap now checks each part on its own:

  • a changed chord;
  • a changed command for the same key, in the same place in the keymap;
  • changed parameters.

I checked the command assertion against the code with the command hashing removed: it fails there.

cargo xtask ci passes, and cargo check --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-ui-egui with -D warnings is clean. Labelled ci:macos, since most of this is macOS-only.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Menu choices are now retained when the app cannot determine both the key window and the main window.
    • Menu-bar updates now reflect changes to shortcut combinations, assigned commands, command parameters, and language. Unchanged settings no longer trigger an unnecessary menu-bar rebuild, helping keep the interface responsive.

- The menu's signature (and a rebuild) is taken only when the language or
the keymap's fingerprint changes, not every frame.
- The keymap's fingerprint also covers what each key runs (its command and
parameters, hashed without allocating), so a key rebound to another
command changes it; the web app's browser-key list follows that too.
- A menu choice is dropped only when both a key and a main window are known
and differ (a native panel); otherwise it's kept.

Walkthrough

The changes expand shortcut fingerprints to include binding commands and parameters, use the language and shortcut fingerprint to gate macOS menu checks, and adjust panel key detection when no main window is available.

Changes: macOS menu behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track shortcut binding changes
crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/keymap.rs
The shortcut fingerprint now includes each binding’s chord, command, and non-null parameters. Tests check that command or parameter changes affect the fingerprint.
Check menu refresh inputs
apps/rustgis/src/main.rs, apps/rustgis/src/menu.rs
The menu state records the language and shortcut fingerprint from the last signature check. When both are unchanged, App::menus skips signature computation and menu build attempts. Panel key detection returns false when a key window exists without a main window.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the macOS menu bar and the language or keymap trigger, which matches the main change: the menu signature and rebuild now run only when the language or shortcut fingerprint changes. It omits the fingerprint now covering commands and parameters, and the menu-choice retention change, but those are secondary.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's Summary, Testing, and Related issue sections. Summary explains what changed and why, and Testing lists the tests, the cargo xtask ci run, and the wasm check. The Related issue section is missing; the description says it follows #1126 but does not use the Closes/Part of format. UI evidence is omitted, which is acceptable because no visible UI change is described.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 4 files.

Behaviour change, confidence: medium. (Some(key), None) used to drop the choice and now keeps it. That covers a native panel in front while the main window is minimised, so a menu choice made while a file dialog is up now runs after the dialog closes. The PR body states this trade-off, which is fine. But the choice then runs against whatever the app looks like later. For Save, Close Window or Undo, that could be a surprise. Could the comment name the case it's written for, and could the PR body say whether a minimised main window is the only case that reaches this arm?

Code review

Bugs: No defects found. The early-return gate in apps/rustgis/src/main.rs (menus()) is sound. menu::Signature holds only the language and the own items' shortcut labels, and both derive from the keymap and chosen_lang(). Enabled states still update every frame through follow(). shortcuts_fingerprint now covers chord, command, and non-null params, so it tracks everything the labels depend on.

Security: None found. The change adds no input parsing and no unsafe, and it keeps the no-unwrap rule.

Performance: Minor. The fingerprint serialises each non-null params value into the hasher every frame. The doc comment calls the fingerprint "cheap" and "no allocation". That holds for allocation, but the per-frame serialisation cost grows with the number of parameterised bindings. Negligible at current keymap sizes.

Quality: Minor. The new io::Write adapter (Feed) is clear. The keymap test now isolates chord, command, and params, which fits the comment in the test. There is no test for the new menus() gate. That is understandable because the gate sits behind macOS AppKit, but the PR could say so explicitly.

AGENTS.md: Compliant as far as the diff shows. There are no new user-visible strings, no new dependencies, no unwrap/expect, and the wasm-facing code in ui-egui uses only std and serde_json. Label ci:macos is set, as the PR body says.

Confidence: High on the gate logic and the fingerprint. Medium on the panel_has_keys change, which I posted inline. I did not run the tests. My reading is from the staged files only.

Add an equal-length rebinding case to the fingerprint test.

The test changes the command and parameters only between values of different lengths: select.clear (12 bytes) to select.all (10 bytes), and {"tool":"select"} (17 bytes) to {"tool":"measure"} (18 bytes). A fingerprint that hashed only lengths would still pass. Add a same-length replacement, such as tool.set with {"tool":"select"} followed by {"tool":"rotate"}, and assert that the fingerprint changes.
