feat(labels): try other places round a point from the Labeling pane and labels.placement. Part 1b - #1141
Second part of #1011 (step 1 of #995). #1025 taught point labels to try the other places round their point when theirs is taken, but left no way to turn it on short of editing the project file. This adds the switch:
labels.placement takes otherPositions: true|false for a class, alone or with a position, an offset or a repeat, as those settings already work. Anything but a boolean is refused, and so is true on a line or polygon layer (false is taken anywhere). A position that isn't a placement name is refused too, instead of being dropped for the other keys. Turning it on or off while labels are locked locks them again (same_places, from feat(labels): point labels try other positions round the point when theirs is taken. Part 1a #1025), since the places they took no longer stand.
Docs: cartography.md describes the option, the order in which the places are tried (corners first, then the sides, then above and below), how it combines with the offset and Lock, and the command.
Testing
cargo xtask ci. Locally, duckdb_queries_and_databases fails; it's unrelated (it fails on main with DuckDB installed, and Linux CI has no DuckDB). So I also ran cargo test -p rustgis-plugins -p rustgis-ui-egui -q and cargo xtask layers, which pass.
New engine test labels_take_other_positions_round_points: alone it keeps the class's position, junk is refused (in it or in the position), turning it on for lines and polygons is refused, it undoes, the project keeps it, and turning it on or off while locked locks again.
New UI test other_positions_are_set_in_the_pane_for_points: the checkbox sets and clears the class's setting, and isn't shown for a line or polygon layer.
The Convert to Annotation test now turns the option on for two polygon classes directly, as a project file could (the command refuses it there), and checks every class of the annotation layer has it off.
Manual: the checkbox shows for Cities, not for Rivers; on, crowded labels appear round their points; undo clears it.
Note: #1128 also edits labels.placement (the None if [...] line and the params text) and the pane's position(). Whichever lands second keeps both sides; the conflicts are mechanical.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Point labels can try alternate positions around their point when the chosen position is occupied. The option is off by default and is available for point layers in the labeling controls and command interface.
The label is placed at the first alternate position where it fits entirely; if none fits, it remains unplaced. Class offsets apply to each position tried, and Lock preserves the selected position for each label.
Documentation
Added guidance on alternate point-label placement and enabling it through the command interface.
The change adds otherPositions to labels.placement, exposes the setting in the Labeling pane for point layers, adds engine and UI tests, and documents alternative point-label positions.
Changes: Point Label Placement

Summary
Command setting and engine tests crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
labels.placement accepts boolean otherPositions and rejects enabling it for non-point layers. Tests cover defaults, placement, invalid values, persistence, label locks, and conversion.
Labeling pane option and documentation crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs, docs/user-guide/cartography.md
The Position tab shows the option for point layers and updates the selected class through labels.placement. The guide describes alternative positions and command syntax.

Explanation
The title names the main change: adding a way to try other places round a point, via the Labeling pane and labels.placement. The raw summary, PR objectives, and description all describe this change. The title is long at 97 characters and uses a 'Part 1b' suffix, which adds noise, but the primary change is clear and related to the changeset.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's structure. It has Summary, Testing, and Related issue sections, and it explains the change, the new labels.placement otherPositions option, the pane checkbox, and the docs. It gives specific test commands, the test names, and manual checks. The UI evidence section is missing. The change adds a visible checkbox in the Labeling pane, and the template asks for screenshots of substantial visible UI changes, so the author should either add a before/after screenshot or state that the change is not substantial. The description does not include a screenshot or a note explaining its absence.
Resolution
Consider adding a UI evidence section with a screenshot of the new Try other places round the point checkbox in the Labeling pane for a point layer, or state why no screenshot is needed.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
No correctness bugs found. I traced the new labels.placementotherPositions path, the lock invalidation in same_places, the render-side others() closure, and the test's command calls. Each matches its use.
Low: otherPositions is accepted on line and polygon layers and silently does nothing there. It also drops the label lock on toggle. Same gap as repeat. Inline comment posted on crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:163. Confidence about 60%.
Security
Nothing found. The new code has no unwrap, expect, or unsafe, and it parses the parameter with pattern matching and refuses anything that isn't a boolean.
Performance
Nothing found. The new checkbox and the command only run on user action.
Quality
Nit: the labels.placement parameter text says "points only", but the command doesn't check geometry. This matches how repeat is handled, so it is a consistency choice, not a defect.
Nit: the Convert test now sets otherPositions through commands for two classes, which is clearer than the old direct field write.
AGENTS.md
Nothing violated. tl! wraps the new pane strings, no ribbon or dialog changes, layering is unchanged, and the new tests keep the hostile_params_never_panic pattern.
Low, confidence about 30%: the pane change is visible UI, and the PR body describes a manual check but attaches no screenshot. AGENTS.md asks for a rendered look at UI work, and a single checkbox may not count as substantial.
What I checked and found correct: the lock is dropped when otherPositions changes (same_places); the alternative order in LabelPlacement::alternatives matches the documented QGIS order; the class offset applies to every alternative (place closure in render/src/lib.rs); class_mut accepts the Default name, so the test's "Default" entry works; and labels.class.add, labels.enable, labels.lock, and labels.convert take the parameters the test uses.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 02c9386 to PR head ab6fc0b).
GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit. Newer commits from the fork aren't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).
I found no bugs, security problems or AGENTS.md violations. I checked the engine command, the pane checkbox, the lock logic, the renderer guard, the convert path, the docs and the new tests against the code they call. One low-confidence quality note is posted inline.
Bugs
None found. Checked:
GeometryType has one Point variant, so != Point refuses only non-point layers.
same_places / lock_holds correctly drop the lock when the flag changes on a locked class.
The renderer only uses the alternatives when is_point.
The documented try-order matches LabelPlacement::alternatives().
Null and non-bool otherPositions values are refused, and the tests cover them.
Security
None found. The new parameter is validated and no new input is read from files.
Performance
None found. The new work is a few flag comparisons per command.
Quality
Low confidence (about 40%): a stale other_positions flag on a line or polygon class is not visible or clearable from the pane, because the checkbox is drawn only for points. The flag can still come from a project file, and it still participates in the lock comparison. See the inline comment on crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs:870.
Nit: the null handling for otherPositions differs from offset and repeat, where null means "none". This matches the documented bool type and is asserted by the test, so it's intentional.
AGENTS.md
Compliant as far as I checked: no unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code; UI strings are wrapped in tl!; the command takes no dialogs; docs are updated; no new dependencies; no ribbon change.
Change size
Compared with main: merge base d48fa38 to PR head 8211465. Sizes are of changed files, not line counts.
I found no bugs, security issues, or performance problems. Two small items are posted inline.
Bugs: none found. I checked the order of the alternatives in the doc against alternatives() in symbology.rs, the lock logic in same_places and with_labels, and the refusal rule against the pane's Point check. They agree.
Security: none. The new param takes only a bool, and junk values are refused.
Performance: none. The alternatives are at most eight places per label.
Quality:
crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:160 (nit, confidence high): s.layer_id(p) is resolved twice, once here and again in with_labels. The is_some_and also skips the check silently when the layer is missing. That is safe only because with_class then reports the error. (inline comment posted)
Test coverage:
crates/engine/src/tests.rs:2481 (confidence high): the PR says turning the option on while locked also relocks the labels. The test only covers turning it off. The code looks correct by reading, but nothing exercises it. (inline comment posted)
AGENTS.md: compliant. There are no unwrap/expect calls in non-test code, the new UI strings use tl!, the docs are updated, and no ribbon control was added. Nothing in the diff needed a dependency or asset change.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base d48fa38 to PR head 8211465).
The test toggles the checkbox only while Default is chosen. It asserts on labels.default.other_positions, so a change that always writes the flag to Default would still pass it. The engine test labels_take_other_positions_round_points sends only layer and otherPositions, with no class key, so it does not detect that regression either.
Select a non-default class in the pane, toggle the checkbox, and assert that the selected class's other_positions changes while Default keeps its previous value.
This is a test-coverage improvement. It does not describe a current production defect, because the checkbox passes the selected class through c.params.

Add a polygon-layer case to the checkbox absence test.
other_positions_are_set_in_the_pane_for_points checks that the checkbox is absent only for the Rivers layer. The checkbox guard is a positive point check, so the current code is correct. A regression that shows the checkbox for polygon layers, or that narrows the exclusion to polylines only, would still pass this test. Select a polygon layer in the same test after the Rivers check, and assert that Role::CheckBox with the "Try other places round the point" label is absent.

On the two nitpicks on the pane test: I added the polygon case, so the box is checked absent for Countries too. I'm leaving the non-default class case for later: the checkbox goes through the same c.params as the pane's other controls, which the class tests already cover.
I read the diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the code it touches. I did not build or run the tests (read-only review), so the new tests are checked by reading, not by execution.
Bugs
None confirmed. The lock logic is correct: same_places relocks whenever other_positions changes, and the pane's c.params adds only class, so the new "position must be a placement name" check does not affect the checkbox.
position: null is now refused where it used to be ignored when offset, repeat or otherPositions came with it. This is a behaviour change the PR body does not mention, and it is inconsistent with null meaning "none" elsewhere in the command. Confidence: medium on impact, high that it is unmentioned. (Inline comment posted on labels.rs:136.)
Security
None found. The new input is typed and refused on junk, and the layer lookup goes through layer_id.
Performance
None found. The geometry check only runs when otherPositions is true.
Quality
The comment at labels.rs:160-161 says a missing layer "passes here and is reported by with_class". That is wrong: s.layer_id(p)? already returns an error for a missing layer, so the is_some_and is always Some. Confidence: high. (Inline comment with a suggested replacement posted.)
Nit: the docs' try-order (corners first, then sides, then above and below) matches alternatives() in crates/map/src/symbology.rs. No change needed.
AGENTS.md
Compliance looks good: no unwrap or panic in non-test code, interface strings wrapped in tl!, no new dependencies, and the engine and pane tests are in place.
Nit: this is a small visible change, and the PR has no screenshot. AGENTS.md asks for screenshots only for substantial visible changes, so this is optional.
I posted two inline comments, on labels.rs:160-161 and labels.rs:136.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base d48fa38 to PR head e6bc858).
"position": null is now refused. Before, null was read as absent, so {"position": null, "offset": [...]} worked. Other parts of this command treat null as "none", so this may be an unintended break, or an intended one that the test pins. Posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:136. Confidence: medium.
Security
Nothing found. The new otherPositions value is type-checked, and the render loop only indexes through checked_sub and nth.
Performance
Nothing worth raising. The alternatives list is at most 8 entries per point label, and it is built only for classes that have the option on.
Quality
A comment in the new layer check says a missing layer "passes here and is reported by with_class". When otherPositions is true, s.layer_id(p)? returns the error first. The behaviour is still a refusal, only the comment is wrong. Posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs:160. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md
Checked against the guidelines: no unwrap/panic in non-test code, UI text wrapped in tl!, the checkbox is pane-only with no ribbon control, and the docs match the code. The engine test helpers (View, render, Session::new) match their signatures.
The PR adds no new dependencies, icons or assets, so those rules don't apply.
I could not compile or run the tests here (read-only review), so this rests on reading the code. I also confirmed three points: the alternatives order in symbology.rs matches the documented order, the class offset applies to every alternative place, and the pane's point check agrees with the engine's (a dataset has a single GeometryType::Point).
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base d48fa38 to PR head e6bc858).
Bugs: No bugs found. Confidence: high. I checked the following against the surrounding code:
The lock logic. same_places relocks when otherPositions changes on either side, and a placement change relocks only when one side has it on. This matches the docs and the new tests.
The alternatives order in PlacementCode::alternatives (symbology.rs:2265). It matches the documented order: corners first, then sides, own placement left out.
The layer gate. MultiPoint maps to GeometryType::Point, and there is no mixed geometry type, so the command and the pane agree with the renderer's per-feature is_point.
The new position guard. Its only callers, the pane and the ribbon, send a valid name or omit the key, and the pane's params adds only class.
The engine and UI tests. Their View, render, Session::new, and harness helpers match existing usage in the same files.
Security: None. The new input is a boolean, and the change adds no file, network, or secret handling.
Performance: Nothing worth raising. layer_id runs twice on the otherPositions: true path, which is negligible.
Quality: Nothing worth raising. The new strings are wrapped in tl!, and the new code has no unwrap/expect/indexing outside tests.
AGENTS.md: One optional item, confidence low (about 30%). AGENTS.md asks for a rendered check of UI changes and, for substantial visible changes, screenshots in the PR. The PR describes a manual check of the new checkbox but attaches no screenshot. One checkbox is probably not "substantial", so this is only a suggestion.
No inline comments were posted, because nothing survived as a line-specific finding. I did not run the test suite; this review is by reading the code only.

Nit (confidence: medium, the wording is slightly broader than the code). "Where none is free it is left out" holds for text-only labels. In place_labels (crates/render/src/lib.rs, ~4575-4593), when no place shows the whole label, the label keeps its own place and shows whatever part fits there. An icon that fits can still show with its text left out, and the label is dropped only when nothing at its own place shows. Consider saying that instead, e.g. "where none shows all of it, it stays at its own place, with what fits there".
None found. I checked the new labels.placement parsing, the lock relock path (same_places and with_labels), the render-side alternatives (place_labels, locked-index mapping), and the pane checkbox. The new parsing uses get() and ?, with no unwrap in non-test code. Order matches LabelPlacement::alternatives.
Security
None found.
Performance
None found.
Quality
Low: the layer-kind gate uses the declared Dataset::geometry_type() (command and pane). The renderer decides per feature (g.kind()). The two agree for normal point layers, and the mismatch is harmless for mixed layers. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
Medium: AGENTS.md asks for a rendered look at UI changes and screenshots for substantial visible changes. This adds a checkbox, which is arguably small, but the PR body has no screenshot. Confidence: medium.
Informational: a non-string position alongside offset or repeat is now refused, where it used to be dropped silently. The PR body discloses this. Callers that relied on the old behaviour will now get an error.
Posted inline: docs/user-guide/cartography.md:447. "Where none is free it is left out" is slightly broader than the code. Icon-bearing labels keep the icon at their own place. Confidence: medium.
Checked and fine: the engine test and the UI test cover the new paths, rustfmt line widths stay within 140, tl! wraps the new strings, and the hostile_params test covers the new key through the params string.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 6692b1b to PR head 4b73afd).
Assert alternative-position retention after navigation.
The test checks only that label_lock exists. It does not check that Lock restores the same alternative position after navigation. Ensure the fixture selects a non-default alternative, render before and after navigation, and compare that label's selected position.

Update the label-lock test in `tests.rs` to select a non-default alternative
position in its fixture, then verify that the same label position is restored
after navigation. Render before and after navigation and compare the selected
position rather than checking only whether `label_lock` exists.

Summary
Second part of #1011 (step 1 of #995). #1025 taught point labels to try the other places round their point when theirs is taken, but left no way to turn it on short of editing the project file. This adds the switch:
labels.placementtakesotherPositions: true|falsefor a class, alone or with a position, an offset or a repeat, as those settings already work. Anything but a boolean is refused, and so istrueon a line or polygon layer (falseis taken anywhere). Apositionthat isn't a placement name is refused too, instead of being dropped for the other keys. Turning it on or off while labels are locked locks them again (same_places, from feat(labels): point labels try other positions round the point when theirs is taken. Part 1a #1025), since the places they took no longer stand.cartography.mddescribes the option, the order in which the places are tried (corners first, then the sides, then above and below), how it combines with the offset and Lock, and the command.Testing
