fix(engine): a new feature doesn't take a deleted feature's locked label - #1271
Part of #1135. With labels locked, a feature added after deleting the one with the highest id showed a label, drawn at the lock's place without a collision check. Dataset::push gives a new feature max(id) + 1, so it took the deleted feature's id and matched its lock entry.
Session::run now drops the lock entries of features a command removed (forget_locks_of_removed_features, engine/src/lib.rs), right after fresh_source_ids, which handles the same id reuse for database layers. So every path that removes features is covered, without one call per path: delete, cut, merge, archive, sync, saving and discarding database edits, geoprocessing updates, and any command added later.
Undo and redo bring the entries back or take them away with the rest of the project: the lock is part of the snapshot, and neither runs this step.
Streamed layers are skipped: they hold only the window in view, so a feature outside it isn't gone.
Layers a command didn't change are skipped, through the features' shared allocation, and nothing runs without a lock. The set built is sized by the lock, not the layer.
Chosen over a monotonic next id in Dataset, which would touch serialization and every reader that numbers features, and over pruning at each removal path, which the next path could miss.
Known limit: the step compares ids, so an id one command both removes and hands out stays locked. edit.merge keeps a row and edit.split only adds, so neither does this. Only data.archiveRestore can, and it needs an earlier id reuse and a lock taken in between; the effect is one label drawn without a collision check.
Left for later: widening the id in LabelKey to u64 for wasm32, the other half of #1135. It changes the lines #1128 and #1213 are changing, so it's better after they merge.
Testing
cargo nextest run --workspace --no-fail-fast: 3166 passed (except duckdb_queries_and_databases, which fails locally with DuckDB installed, also on main); cargo clippy -p rustgis-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings, doctests and cargo xtask layers.
New a_new_feature_doesnt_take_the_locked_label_of_a_deleted_one, the issue's scenario: an attribute edit keeps the label; deleting the highest id drops its entry; the new feature takes that id and has no label; two undos bring the label back; a redo takes it away again.
New a_lock_holds_for_a_streamed_layers_features_outside_its_window: when a streamed layer's window moves off a feature, its entry stays.
UI evidence
None: no visible change besides the label that no longer appears.
Session::guarded now removes label-lock entries for deleted features in changed, non-streamed layers. Tests cover edits, reused IDs, undo/redo, and streamed features.

Summary
Remove locks for deleted features crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Session::guarded calls the cleanup helper after refreshing source IDs. The helper removes lock entries for feature IDs no longer present in changed, non-streamed layers. Tests cover edits, deletion, ID reuse, undo/redo, and streamed features. The tests also use remove_shp to clean up Shapefile files.
RustGIS issue 1135 describes a new feature inheriting a deleted feature’s label lock when it reuses the deleted feature’s ID. This change removes the lock entry for the removed feature ID.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to bbb5b
The cleanup prevents deleted features’ label locks from transferring to newly added features. Archive restoration retains a pre-existing edge case, but this change does not worsen it. Mergeable after normal checks.

The change is small and sound. It prunes lock entries for features a command removed, and the new tests exercise the main path. I found no crash, unwrap/expect, or unsafe in the new code, and it uses get-style access. I did not run the tests, because this session has no shell. The findings below are from reading the diff and the surrounding source.
Bugs
The "only restoring from an archive can" claim may be too narrow. The database save path in crates/engine/src/cmd/gpkg.rs (about lines 200–230) can remove and re-issue an id in one command, which this step would miss. Confidence: medium-low, needs verifying. (Inline comment posted.)
Quality
Entries for layers a command removes are never pruned, because the loop only walks layers that after still has. That contradicts the "every path" wording. The leak is harmless today, since layer ids are monotonic and undo restores the lock with the project. Confidence: medium, low severity. (Inline comment posted.)
Output::Update in crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:1009 replaces a layer's rows wholesale. If a tool renumbers rows, the id-based check keeps labels on the new features. The in-tree tools I checked preserve ids, so this is a risk to watch rather than a current bug. Confidence: low.
Performance
Once gone is empty, the feature scan in lib.rs (around lines 794–796) could break early. This is a minor nit. Attribute edits unshare the rows, so they always pay a full scan of a locked layer. For very large layers that cost is worth noting, though it is acceptable. Confidence: high, low impact.
Tests
No test covers two layers with the same feature id, so nothing checks that an edit to one layer leaves the other layer's entries alone. (Inline comment posted.)
The streamed-layer test calls the private function directly, and it removes its temp files after the assertions, so a failed assertion leaks them. Confidence: high, low severity.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The new code has no unwrap/expect/panic, no unsafe, and the change needs no UI text, notices, or assets. The streamed-layer and multi-layer cases follow the "test both ways" rule only partly, since the multi-layer case is not covered.
Prior reviews: none on this PR, so I did not skip any earlier concerns.
GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit. Newer commits from the fork aren't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).
None new. I checked the pruning step against the lock's id semantics, the undo and redo snapshots, the time-slider windows, and the streamed-layer skip. I found no path where it drops a live entry or keeps a stale one that matters. Confidence: high for the paths I traced.
Security
None found. The change is internal bookkeeping with no input parsing, I/O, or secrets. Confidence: high.
Performance
None worth raising. Each mutating command does one pass over the lock for each changed, unshared, non-streamed layer, and it returns early when the lock is empty. Confidence: medium.
Quality (nits, grouped)
crates/engine/src/lib.rs:20: the closure |o| o.layers.iter().find(|o| o.id == l.id) shadows o in the inner closure. Renaming the inner one (for example ol) would make it easier to read. Confidence: high.
crates/engine/src/lib.rs:17 repeats the map pairing that Session::run does at lib.rs:1223 (maps.get(i) filtered by name). A shared helper would keep the two in step. Confidence: low, since it's two lines.
The remove_shp refactor touches three existing tests that the fix doesn't need. It's harmless, but it widens the diff for review. Confidence: high that it's unrelated, low that it matters.
AGENTS.md
No violations in the new code. It has no unwrap, expect, indexing, or unsafe, and the tests use the same style as their neighbours. The streamed-layer test does exercise the skip both ways. Confidence: high.
Earlier concerns left alone: 3 (the three github-actions threads at lib.rs:778, lib.rs:782 and tests.rs:2814). None has an answer from the author or a maintainer, and the code they point at hasn't changed. I checked the first one, the gpkg save-path id reuse, and it doesn't hold for the paths I traced. gpkg/edit.rs:293–299 reserves keys above the loaded baseline and the table's high-water mark, and edit.rs:335 runs the deletes after the inserts. The built-in Output::Update producer clones the dataset's ids (analysis/src/tools.rs:2750), and streamed layers can't take an Update (engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:446–452). So the PR's "only data.archiveRestore can" claim holds for those paths. I didn't check archiveRestore itself or the Postgres key path. The author could answer that thread with this evidence.

Keep a lock from attaching to a different feature with the same id.
forget_locks_of_removed_features keeps a lock entry while its feature id is still present after the command. When data.archiveRestore removes a locked feature and restores an archived feature with the same id in the same command, the entry stays. The restored feature then uses the stored label placement index of the removed feature, so its label can be drawn at a position chosen for a different feature.

Review comment at @crates/engine/src/lib.rs around lines 792 - 793:
Update forget_locks_of_removed_features so it retains a lock only when the
original feature survives the command, not merely when a feature with the same
id is present. Handle data.archiveRestore replacing a locked feature with an
archived feature of the same id by removing the old feature’s lock before the
restored feature can reuse it.

@coderabbitai on the follow-up for crates/engine/src/lib.rs 792-793 (data.archiveRestore): known and documented in the function's comment: comparing ids keeps an id that one command both removes and hands out, and only archive restore does that. Telling the two features apart needs more than the id. That's the follow-up part of #1135, so it's out of scope here.
@jgregoriorincon Agreed. The comment on forget_locks_of_removed_features explicitly documents the same-command ID reuse limit. Comparing IDs cannot distinguish the deleted feature from its replacement.
I withdraw this follow-up request from this PR. The feature-identity work remains in scope for #1135, as you noted.
