SVG layout export, from the roadmap's self-contained items. layout.export with a .svg path writes the current page in millimetres, each element in a group of its own (an Inkscape layer) named after it, so the page can be finished in a vector editor.
Text (dynamic text expanded), rectangles (rounded too), ellipses and lines with their heads are SVG text and shapes, placed, sized and coloured as the page draws them.
The elements with no vector form yet (map frames, legends, scale bars, north arrows, tables, charts, colorbars, pictures) are each a picture of that element alone at the export dpi, in its place.
crates/render/src/svg.rs writes it; the desktop export dialog offers .svg; the layouts guide and the command's parameters say so. The roadmap item now asks for map frames and surrounds as vectors, the next steps if this shape is right.
Testing
a_layout_exports_to_svg_with_each_element_its_own_group (engine): page size in mm, a group per visible element, text escaped as text, a rectangle as a shape, the map frame as a PNG picture; the writer's own test for numbers, escaping and colours; layouts_compose_export_and_round_trip now refuses .tiff instead of .svg
cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings (with the three lints my clippy 1.95 flags on main allowed), cargo test --workspace (1967 passed), cargo xtask layers
By hand: the World Atlas sample's map layout exported with rustgis-cli to SVG and PNG; the SVG parses as XML with its 8 element groups, and side by side in a browser it matches the PNG (screenshot below; the browser picks the sans-serif for text)

Roadmap: Self-contained, any time › SVG layout export (open)
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Export layouts as SVG from the desktop export picker, alongside PDF and PNG.
SVG exports preserve text and basic shapes as vectors, while map frames and other surrounds are embedded as images at the selected export resolution and clipped to their element bounds.
SVG export includes the currently selected map-series page.
Documentation
Updated the layout export guide to describe SVG output, how layout elements are represented, and potential differences in text alignment and line widths across viewers.
Layout export now supports SVG. Text and basic shapes are emitted as vectors, while other rendered layout elements are embedded as PNG images. The export command, desktop picker, tests, roadmap, and user guide reflect the added format.

Summary
Render cropped layout elements crates/render/src/layout.rs
The layout renderer shares page sizing and drawing logic. It can render a selected element into a transparent, cropped pixel region.
Render layout elements as SVG crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/svg.rs
A public SVG renderer outputs text and basic shapes as SVG, and embeds other visible elements as cropped PNG images. Tests cover rendering, bounds, escaping, and formatting.
Connect SVG rendering to layout export crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
The export command accepts .svg, renders the current layout-series page, writes the output atomically, and returns its path and byte count. Tests check SVG content and unsupported extensions.
Expose and describe SVG export crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, docs/user-guide/layouts.md, ROADMAP.md
The desktop picker offers SVG except when printing. The user guide describes vector text and shapes, rasterized map frames and surrounds, and SVG text differences. The roadmap entry is revised.
Large layouts with many rasterized elements may exhaust memory during SVG export. Bound or stream the output before merging.

The PR adds one test, a_layout_exports_to_svg_with_each_element_its_own_group, to crates/engine/src/tests.rs. It looks like it will fail, because the SVG exporter it tests isn't in the repo. I could only read the code, not run it.
Bugs
The test will fail on this branch (high confidence).layout.export (crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:3006) accepts only .png and .pdf. Any other extension returns "export to a .png or .pdf file". The test's .unwrap() on the .svg export would then panic. A search of crates/ finds no code that emits <g id="element-…">, viewBox or width="…mm". The PR changes only tests.rs, so the SVG exporter looks missing from the commit. Either add it, or drop the test until the exporter lands.
Security
Nothing found.
Performance
Nothing found.
Quality
&svg[..300.min(svg.len())] can panic if byte 300 falls inside a multi-byte character. svg.get(..n) avoids that. Low confidence it matters here, since the output is ASCII.
The test builds its own temp file path from the process id. Use the shared helper if other tests have one. Nit.
AGENTS.md
cargo xtask ci should fail on this commit because of the test above. The new test code itself uses unwrap(), which is fine in test code.
Change size
The whole PR against main (merge base 0411ce6 to PR head d4326d4).
The PR adds SVG export for layouts (layout.export with a .svg path). I found no crashes or security problems. There are two inline comments, one on performance and one on fidelity.
Bugs
None found. I read the code and checked it against layout.rs. I did not build it or run the tests.
The unwrap() calls in the new test are in test code, which AGENTS.md allows.
Security
None found. Element names and text are XML-escaped, and control characters are stripped.
The num function maps NaN and infinity to 0, and dpi is clamped.
Performance
Full-page render per picture element (svg.rsalone, medium-high confidence). Each map frame, legend, scale bar, table or picture clones the layout and renders the whole page at dpi, then crops it. With N picture elements at up to 600 dpi that is N full-page renders. Render only the element's rectangle, or cache the render.
Quality
Silent drop of picture elements (low-medium confidence). When rendering or cropping fails, the element's <g> is written empty and the user gets no warning.
Text may not match PNG/PDF output (low-medium confidence). The SVG splits text only on existing newlines, and text_block may wrap or clip to the element width. The size and line-spacing constants (1.33, 0.6, 1.25) are copied from the page renderer instead of shared. SVG viewers also substitute serif and sans-serif, so glyph widths can differ.
Test coverage (low confidence). The new test never exercises a line with arrowheads, so line() has no coverage. Nor does it cover a rotated or out-of-page element, a map series page, or allPages/dpi handling for SVG.
AGENTS.md
Never crash. No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code, and no unsafe.
Wasm. The new code uses tiny_skia and base64 and no std::time. Please confirm base64 is already a dependency of rustgis-render and is allowed by deny.toml. If it was newly added, cargo xtask notices needs a run. The diff does not show Cargo.toml changes, so check this.
Translatable text. The UI strings use tl!.
Hostile parameters. I did not see layout.export with a .svg path added to hostile_params_never_panic. Please check that the existing coverage reaches it.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 0411ce6 to PR head 2c55e43)
The SVG exporter is well scoped, escapes its text, and follows the never-crash rules. I found one real correctness problem (opaque pictures) and a few smaller concerns. I only read the code; I did not build it or run the tests.
Bugs
Opaque white backgrounds on picture elements (fairly confident). In alone (crates/render/src/svg.rs), render fills the page with white (crates/render/src/layout.rs:63) and alone only crops it. Every map frame, legend, scale bar, north arrow or other picture is an opaque white rectangle. It hides anything beneath it, such as a legend or north arrow over a map frame, or a translucent surround. This is not what the PNG/PDF export draws. Rendering the solo element on a transparent background would fix it. The new test doesn't cover overlapping elements.
Performance
A full-page render per non-vector element (medium).alone clones the whole layout and rasterises the full page for each picture element, at up to 600 dpi. Layouts with many surrounds will export slowly and use a lot of memory. Rendering only the element's rectangle, or reusing one render, would avoid this.
Quality
Text fidelity (low–medium). SVG text uses generic serif/sans-serif and text-anchor. The page instead positions text using the bundled fonts' measured extents, so widths, alignment and overflow can shift in an editor. The PR description mentions the font difference; the user guide doesn't.
Gaps in tests and options (low).allPages is ignored for SVG, so a map series exports only its current page. That is acceptable but isn't tested. There is no test for the None ("page is too large to draw") error path.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The new code has no unwrap, expect or unsafe, and it uses get() and clamps. tl! is used in the dialog, and the render crate stays below L6. The crate builds no dependency that needs a licence check beyond base64, which is already used. This is a judgment from reading the diff; the PR says cargo xtask ci passed.

Preserve both independently added test groups when merging main.\n\nRender embedded elements into transparent cropped bounds, propagate\nrequired map failures, and document viewer-dependent SVG text metrics.\nCover image placement, transparency, failures, arrows, and series pages.
I read the diff and the surrounding render and export code. I couldn't build or run anything here, so none of this was tested. The change is well structured, and I found no bugs that block merging. The findings are minor.
Bugs
Misleading error on a failed element render (medium confidence). When any map frame or surround fails to render, layout_svg returns None, and the engine reports "the page is too large to draw". A failed map source, as in the new test, is not a size problem. A distinct message would help. See the inline comment on svg.rs.
Surrounds are clipped to their own box (low confidence). Each non-vector element is drawn into its on-page bounds only. Anything it draws past that box, such as a grid label or a legend overflow, would be cut off in the SVG but shown in PNG/PDF.
XML-invalid characters (low to medium confidence). esc drops control characters but not the Unicode non-characters U+FFFE and U+FFFF. Hostile element names or text from a layout file could produce an SVG that a strict XML parser rejects.
Security
No issues found. All text and attribute values go through esc, ids are numeric, and embedded images are base64 PNG data produced by the renderer.
Performance
No problems found. render_element allocates only the element's pixel bounds, and the test checks this.
layout_svg in the engine clones the whole layout, which may hold large pictures. It is a one-off cost on export (low confidence).
Quality
allPages and map series are PDF-only and are ignored for SVG. This is tested, but the layout.export parameter doc could say so.
SVG text uses the viewer's generic serif or sans-serif font, so its widths can differ from PNG/PDF. The docs already state this.
Checked and fine: page_geometry and draw_page refactor the shared render path without changing PNG/PDF behaviour; the mm to pixel scale for text size and letter spacing matches text_block; the new tests cover transparency, off-page and cropped elements, and the failure path.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code, and no unsafe.
The new code builds for wasm: it uses no std::time, and only rustgis_data::io::write_atomic for file access.
The dialog labels use tl!.
The layout test now checks .tiff is refused instead of .svg.
base64 is already a dependency of render, and tempfile is a dev-dependency only, so I don't expect deny.toml or the notices to need changes. I didn't run cargo deny or cargo xtask notices.

I read the full diff and the surrounding code. I did not run the build or tests. The change looks correct and follows the repository guidelines. I found no confirmed bugs and no security problems. I left one inline comment on crates/render/src/svg.rs.
Bugs
None found. I checked these paths and they hold up:
Zero-size or off-page elements in render_element. IntRect::from_xywh returns None for a zero width, which becomes "off-page" and is not an error.
Pixel bounds clamped to the page, so allocations are capped by the page budget.
dpi is clamped for the SVG export and for page_geometry.
The series page is not stepped or modified during the export. The test asserts the layout is unchanged afterwards.
A required map-source failure returns an error and leaves no partial file, because the write happens only after the whole string is built.
Security
None found. User text and layout names go through esc. It escapes the five XML entities and strips control characters and U+FFFE/U+FFFF, so text and names cannot break out of an attribute or the document. Numbers go through num, which turns NaN and infinity into 0. Output is written with write_atomic.
Performance
Each map frame, scale bar, north arrow or legend calls render_element, which re-runs draw_page. That recomputes the frame cameras (and, for legends, complete_shown_legends) once per element. Confidence: low-medium. It is acceptable now, and a shared per-export context would avoid the repeat. This is the inline comment.
Quality
SourceLayer::default() followed by source.path = … appears in the new tests in svg.rs and crates/engine/src/tests.rs. It may trigger clippy::field_reassign_with_default under -D warnings. Confidence: low. Struct-update syntax avoids it.
Vector text uses the constants 1.33, 0.6 and 1.25 to mimic the raster text layout. They are duplicated from the PNG renderer, so the two can drift apart if the raster text changes. Sharing named constants would help. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. The SVG path uses ? and Option throughout.
No std::time use, no new dependency beyond base64, and unsafe is not used. The base64 licence is assumed fine, since it was not checked here. I did not check whether the dependency was already in the render crate.
The new svg module builds in the render crate, below the apps layer, so wasm should still work.
The new dialog strings are wrapped in tl!. Docs and ROADMAP are updated.
The existing layout.export hostile-params test still covers the command. The old .svg rejection assertion was switched to .tiff.

Bound the total SVG output size.
If a high-DPI layout contains many large map frames, this branch retains every base64 PNG in the growing SVG String. The per-crop pixel cap does not bound their combined size. An export can exhaust process memory instead of returning an error. Set an aggregate output budget before appending images, or stream the SVG to an atomic temporary file.
