feat(map): QGIS projects in degrees open in Equirectangular, as QGIS draws them - #885
Piece 1 of #882. It implements the proposal in #883 and is a draft until a maintainer has replied there.
A QGIS project whose coordinate system is in degrees opened in Web Mercator. map.projection refuses degrees, so the import fell back and added a note. QGIS draws such a project as plate carrée, with longitude and latitude as x and y, and RustGIS's Equirectangular preset draws it the same way. In the audit corpus, 9 of the 27 real projects are in EPSG:4326, for example the Training Manual's world.qgs.
Changes in project.importQgis (crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs):
Which projects: coordinate systems in degrees get the equirectangular preset. That means an EPSG code whose PROJ definition is +proj=longlat, or OGC:CRS84. map.projection itself is unchanged and still refuses degrees when a user picks one.
The saved view: the project's view is read in degrees. Before, it was converted as if it were in map units, so these projects always fell back to their data's extent.
Datum note: a datum that PROJ shifts away from WGS 84 (e.g. Potsdam, EPSG:4314) is drawn on WGS 84 with a note. WGS 84, ETRS89-style definitions (+towgs84=0,…) and NAD83 get no note.
Other prime meridians: a project measured from another prime meridian, such as Paris (EPSG:4807, in grads), opens in Equirectangular, and the view goes to its data's extent instead of the saved view.
Scale ranges: they carry over unchanged. RustGIS takes a map's scale as ground metres at the view's centre, as QGIS does for a canvas in degrees.
No new command, parameter or dependency. The Workspace guide's QGIS section mentions the projection.
Testing
a_qgis_project_in_degrees_opens_in_equirectangular (engine) imports projects in each of these systems and checks the projection, the notes and the view:
EPSG:4326, EPSG:4258 and OGC:CRS84: Equirectangular, no note, the saved view in degrees.
EPSG:4314: the datum note.
EPSG:4807: Paris and grads.
EPSG:2056: keeps its own projection.
cargo fmt, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings, cargo test --workspace and cargo xtask layers pass. Two font tests were skipped because they fail locally only, on this machine's fonts.
I rendered the Training Manual's world.qgs (data from qgis/QGIS-Training-Data) in QGIS 4.2.3 and in RustGIS before and after this change:
Before: Web Mercator, with Greenland and Scandinavia stretched.
After: the same plate carrée shapes as QGIS.
Notes: the import now gives none; before, it noted the Web Mercator fallback.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
QGIS projects using supported longitude/latitude coordinate systems now open in Equirectangular projection.
For Greenwich-based systems, saved views are retained when within valid longitude and latitude bounds; other geographic systems use the default view.
Import notices identify when a geographic coordinate system is approximated, including systems with a non-WGS 84 datum or non-Greenwich prime meridian. Projection failures continue to be reported as Web Mercator.
Documentation
Updated the workspace guide to explain how longitude/latitude QGIS projects are displayed.
…draws them
A project whose coordinate system is in degrees (EPSG:4326, ETRS89, NAD83, OGC:CRS84) opened in
Web Mercator with a note, because map.projection refuses degrees. QGIS draws such a project as
plate carrée, which the Equirectangular preset draws the same way: the import now picks it, and
reads the project's saved view in degrees. A datum PROJ shifts from WGS 84 is noted; a project
on another prime meridian (Paris) goes to its data's extent.

Walkthrough
QGIS import now recognizes supported geographic coordinate systems and uses Equirectangular for them. Greenwich-based geographic saved views are clipped to longitude and latitude bounds. Tests cover geographic CRS values and confirm that EPSG:2056 retains its projection.
Changes: QGIS geographic CRS import
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Geographic CRS detection and projection crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
The importer identifies supported geographic CRSs and their datum and prime-meridian properties. It selects Equirectangular for geographic CRSs. Existing Mercator mappings remain unchanged, and projection failures continue to be reported as drawn in Web Mercator. Tests cover CRS detection, projection selection, datum notes, and EPSG:2056.
Geographic saved-view handling and documentation crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/workspace.md
View selection receives the detected geographic CRS. Greenwich-based geographic extents are clipped to longitude and latitude bounds; extents for other geographic CRSs are ignored. Tests check saved-view handling. The user guide describes Equirectangular for supported projects in degrees.

A rabbit maps the fields in degrees, Then draws the globe with gentle ease. Greenwich bounds keep views in sight, While tests check each CRS right. Equirectangular guides the way, And EPSG:2056 keeps its display.
Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
This change makes QGIS projects in degrees open in Equirectangular. I found no crash risks or AGENTS.md violations. The code has no unwrap, expect or unsafe, and the new Geographic::of parses defensively with ?. I read the diff only and did not run the tests.
Bugs
Low confidence: a project on a non-Greenwich prime meridian (such as Paris) with a WGS 84-equivalent datum gets no note. Its saved view is dropped and its longitudes are drawn as if from Greenwich. The note fires only when !g.wgs84. I posted an inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs:98.
Security
Nothing found. The CRS string is parsed with strip_prefix, parse::<u16> and a lookup that returns Option.
Performance
Nothing found.
Quality
Nothing notable. The new test covers the EPSG:4326, EPSG:4258, OGC:CRS84, EPSG:4314, EPSG:4807 and projected cases.
AGENTS.md
Nothing found. The note strings in qgis.rs aren't wrapped in tl!, but they are import report notes, not UI text, so I didn't flag them.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 84a1f2f to PR head 6d93f21)
I read the diff and the surrounding code (rustgis_data::raster::crs::epsg_proj4). I found no bugs. I did not build the code or run the new test, so its assertions are unchecked.
Bugs
None found. I traced these cases:
EPSG:4326, OGC:CRS84 and the datum-note path.
A degrees extent that falls outside ±180/±90. After clamping, Extent::new can invert, and .filter(|e| !e.is_empty()) drops it. This relies on is_empty treating an inverted extent as empty (confidence: medium).
A Paris-meridian CRS (EPSG:4807): it gets the "drawn in Equirectangular on WGS 84" note and falls back to the data extent for the view.
Quality
Geographic::of detects a WGS 84-equivalent datum with a string match on the PROJ definition: +datum=WGS84, +datum=NAD83, or a zero +towgs84. A definition that gives only +ellps=WGS84 or +ellps=GRS80 with no datum or shift is flagged as shifted, so it gets a spurious "on WGS 84" approximation note. This is harmless but could produce an unneeded warning (confidence: low).
The +pm= check uses def.contains("+pm=") while the other checks use token equality. A token-based check would be consistent, for example def.split_whitespace().any(|t| t.starts_with("+pm=") && t != "+pm=greenwich" && t != "+pm=0") (confidence: low).
Only EPSG: codes and OGC:CRS84 are recognised. urn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::4326 and CRS:84 projects fall through to the old behaviour (confidence: low, depends on what project.crs normalises to).
Grad-based and other non-degree angular units, such as EPSG:4807, are treated as degrees in the drawing. The note covers the datum shift and the prime meridian but doesn't mention the unit, so it could be worded better (confidence: low).
Security
None. This only parses a CRS string and looks it up in a static table. There is no unwrap, expect or indexing, and parse::<u16> handles hostile input.
AGENTS.md
No violations seen:
The new code has no panics or unsafe.
It's engine-only, so it doesn't affect wasm.
The notes go into the report, not UI literals.
A regression test and a docs update are included.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 84a1f2f to PR head dff7914)
I read the full diff and judged it against the surrounding code. I couldn't build or run the tests here, so everything below comes from reading the code.
The change makes a QGIS project in degrees open in the Equirectangular projection instead of falling back to Web Mercator. It also reads the saved view straight as degrees. No blocking problems found.
Bugs
Low confidence: Geographic::of only recognises EPSG:<u16> and OGC:CRS84. Other longlat identifiers, such as urn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::4326, IGNF: codes or custom USER: systems, still take the old Web Mercator path. That is the old behaviour, so it is not a regression. A note saying the system was unrecognised would help.
Low confidence: Paris-meridian view. For EPSG:4807 and other non-Greenwich systems, the code skips the saved view and falls back to the data extent. That is a sensible choice. But the data are still drawn on a Greenwich basis, and the note says only "drawn in Equirectangular on WGS 84". Saying that longitudes are offset from the project's prime meridian would be clearer.
Low confidence: datum check.NAD83 is treated as WGS 84 (+datum=NAD83), which is a deliberate choice that the docstring explains. +towgs84=0,0,0 is matched only as an exact token, so values like 0.0,0.0,0.0 would be reported as a datum shift. That only produces a harmless extra note.
Low confidence: saved-view clamp. The clamp to ±180/±90 is fine. If xmin > xmax in a malformed file, the .filter(|e| !e.is_empty()) check relies on Extent::new normalising or flagging inverted bounds. I did not verify that. The fallback is the data extent, so the impact is small.
Security
No issues. Project XML is parsed as before, and the new code only reads a definition string from the built-in EPSG table.
Performance
No issues. The lookup is a single table read and a few token scans.
Quality
Geographic::of parses the CRS once in import_project, and go_to_view receives the result. That is clean.
The degrees.is_some() match guard (_ if degrees.is_some() => "equirectangular") works. It would read more directly as if degrees.is_some() around the whole mapping.
Test coverage is good: WGS 84, ETRS89, CRS84, a datum-shifted system, a Paris-meridian system, and a projected system. It does not cover a malformed or out-of-range extent in degrees, or an EPSG: code with no definition. A short regression test for those would fit the "never crash" policy.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code (.ok()? and get-style handling are used). The unwrap() calls appear only in the test.
User-facing notes are engine report strings, not UI text, so tl! does not apply.
Docs are updated in docs/user-guide/workspace.md.
I did not run cargo xtask ci, so I can't confirm fmt, clippy and the layer check.

I read the whole diff (qgis.rs, tests.rs, workspace.md) and found nothing that blocks merging. I couldn't build or run anything, so none of this has been run. I posted no inline comments, because none of the points below is worth a line-level note.
What I checked
Never-crash rules: the new code has no unwrap, expect, panic! or indexing.
Geographic::of returns Option and parses the EPSG code with parse::<u16>().ok()?.
The view clamp uses Extent::new(...).filter(|e| !e.is_empty()), so an out-of-range saved extent falls back to the layers' extent.
The test's .unwrap() calls are in test code, which is allowed.
Wasm and layering:rustgis_data::raster::crs::epsg_proj4 is an engine-to-data call, which the layering allows, and nothing new depends on std time or the UI.
Control flow in import_project:
The "EPSG:3857" arm comes first, so Web Mercator is unaffected.
A degrees CRS maps to "equirectangular".
The warning note appears only when the datum isn't WGS 84-like or the prime meridian isn't Greenwich.
If map.projection fails, the existing Web Mercator fallback note still applies.
Tests: they cover EPSG:4326, 4258, OGC:CRS84, a PROJ string, a datum-shift case (4314), a Paris meridian case (4807) and a projected CRS (2056). They check the projection, the notes and the view centre.
Bugs
Low confidence (about 25%).Geographic::of matches +pm= only as the exact tokens +pm=greenwich and +pm=0.
A PROJ string with +pm=0.0 or +pm=0dE is treated as non-Greenwich, which gives a spurious note and leaves the saved view unused.
These forms are rare in QGIS output, so the cost is small.
Low confidence (about 20%). The datum test is a whitelist of +datum=WGS84, +datum=NAD83 and all-zero +towgs84.
Other datums that PROJ treats as having no shift to WGS 84, such as +datum=GGRS87 or a bare +ellps=GRS80 without +towgs84, get the "on WGS 84" note.
That note is accurate, if conservative.
Low confidence (about 15%).Geographic::of matches EPSG: case-sensitively, while OGC:CRS84 is matched case-insensitively. A lowercase epsg:4326 would fall through to the old code path. QGIS writes uppercase, so this is unlikely to matter.
Security
No issues. The CRS string is only tokenised and compared, and the PROJ lookup goes through a numeric EPSG code.
Performance
No issues. has rescans the PROJ string a few times, but the strings are short and this runs once per import.
Quality
Nit.go_to_view and import_project both call degrees.is_some_and(...) several times. Destructuring once with if let Some(g) = degrees would read more simply. This is optional.
Nit. The Ok(_) if degrees.is_some_and(...) guard and the inner meridian computation test the same Geographic twice. Computing the note text once would make the intent clearer.
AGENTS.md
Translations: the new import-report notes are engine data and not UI literals, so tl! doesn't apply.
Docs:docs/user-guide/workspace.md is updated.
Gates: I couldn't run cargo xtask ci here. The author should confirm fmt and clippy pass, since the long single-line closures in qgis.rs may exceed rustfmt's width.

Recognize geographic PROJ strings from QGIS project files so imports
use Equirectangular and preserve saved views in degrees.
Cover token ordering, datum notices and non-Greenwich view fallback.
PR #885 makes a QGIS project in degrees open in the Equirectangular projection instead of Web Mercator. It adds a Geographic classifier in crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs, a degrees branch in go_to_view, a test and a doc paragraph. I found no bugs. I read the diff and epsg_proj4 in rustgis-data. I did not build the code or run the tests.
Bugs
None found.
Non-degree CRSs fall through to the old code path.
Geographic::of returns None for unknown or malformed codes, so those also keep the old behaviour.
The saved-view branch clamps the extent to ±180 / ±90 and drops it if it comes out empty.
If map.projection fails, the degrees extent is still read as lon/lat, which is correct.
Security
None. The new parsing only does strip_prefix, parse and token comparison, and it can't panic.
Performance
None.
Quality
WGS 84 detection is a literal token match (low confidence, minor). wgs84 is true only for +datum=WGS84, +datum=NAD83, or +towgs84=0,0,0[,0,0,0,0]. A PROJ string such as +proj=longlat +ellps=WGS84 +no_defs has no datum shift. PROJ treats it as WGS 84, but it would get the "drawn in Equirectangular on WGS 84" approximation note. That is a harmless false note. +towgs84=0.0,0.0,0.0 would hit the same case. Consider also accepting +ellps=WGS84 when there is no +towgs84, or parsing the towgs84 values numerically.
Duplicated degrees checks (nit). degrees.is_some_and(|g| !g.greenwich) repeats a condition that was just matched. Destructuring once would be tidier: Ok(_) if let Some(g) = degrees && (!g.wgs84 || !g.greenwich). This only applies if the repo's edition allows let-chains.
Test coverage is good. It covers EPSG, OGC:CRS84, PROJ strings, +pm=0.0, the Paris meridian and a projected CRS. The .replace("<xmin>…") hack in the last assertion is a bit fragile.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in the non-test code.
The note strings use report.approximated, which is the engine's data/report text rather than UI text, so tl! doesn't apply.
The docs are updated.
No new dependencies or assets.
Confidence that it conforms: high. Whether cargo xtask ci passes is unverified.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 84a1f2f to PR head a513c07)
I read the diff and the surrounding code. I did not build or run anything, so the new tests are unrun. The PR makes QGIS projects saved in degrees (EPSG:4326, ETRS89, NAD83, PROJ +proj=longlat strings) open in the Equirectangular projection instead of Web Mercator. It also reads the saved view in degrees.
Bugs
No correctness bugs found. I checked these:
NaN or inverted extents: they are clamped and then filtered with is_empty().
Non-Greenwich prime meridians: they correctly skip the saved view.
Projected CRSs: they keep their own projection.
Security
Nothing found. The CRS string is untrusted, but it is only parsed with strip_prefix, parse::<u16> and token comparisons. There is no indexing or unwrap.
Performance
Nothing found.
Quality
The WGS 84 detection matches exact tokens. Variants such as +towgs84=0.0,0,0 or +ellps=WGS84 without +datum would add a spurious "drawn in Equirectangular on WGS 84" note. That is harmless (confidence: medium).
A geographic EPSG code that epsg_proj4 doesn't know still falls back to Web Mercator. The docs say "other longitude/latitude systems", which is broader than what happens (confidence: medium). I left an inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs:93.
The tests cover the main cases: EPSG:4326, 4258, 4314 and 4807, OGC:CRS84, PROJ strings, and a projected CRS. Under the repo's hostile-input rule, a junk +pm= value would be worth one extra case (confidence: low).
AGENTS.md
No violations seen. The code has no unwrap, expect or unsafe, and it uses get-style parsing. The change is engine-only, so the wasm and layering rules are unaffected. The new user-visible docs are in docs/user-guide/workspace.md. The import notes go through report.approximated, as before, and are not wrapped in tl!, which fits since this layer is below the UI.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 4a33d80 to PR head 89676b8)
I read the whole diff and the surrounding Geographic, import_project and go_to_view code. I did not build the code or run the tests. I found no correctness problems and posted no inline comments.
Bugs
Low (about 25%): a saved view with NaN or infinite bounds in go_to_view (qgis.rs, the Some(g) if g.greenwich arm).
f64::max and min return the non-NaN operand, so a NaN bound is silently replaced by ±180 or ±90.
The result can be a plausible but wrong extent that passes is_empty().
The old code went through to_lonlat, which probably rejected non-finite input.
A cheap guard is [x0, y0, x1, y1].iter().all(|v| v.is_finite()).
The effect is limited to a wrong initial view of a hostile project file, not a crash, so it is only a concern under the "hostile input" rule.
Low (about 20%): an EPSG: code above u16::MAX makes parse::<u16>() fail, so Geographic::of returns None. The project then falls back to the old path, where map.projection refuses it and it is drawn in Web Mercator with a note. That is probably acceptable, since epsg_proj4 is keyed by u16.
Security
None found. The code only parses strings, uses no unwrap, expect or indexing, and has no I/O.
Performance
None found.
Quality
Low confidence: the wgs84 flag treats +datum=NAD83 and +towgs84=0,0,0[,0,0,0,0] as WGS 84. This is a deliberate approximation that matches PROJ's null shift, and the doc comment says so. Matching on exact +towgs84= strings is brittle: 0.0,0.0,0.0 or 0,0,0,0,0,0,0.0 would produce a spurious datum note. Parsing the values and checking that they are all zero would be more robust.
Nit:go_to_view takes degrees: Option<Geographic>, and the arm Some(g) if g.greenwich is followed by Some(_) => None. A small helper such as degrees.map(|g| g.greenwich) would flatten that. It is optional.
Nit: the new tests cover both the authid and proj4 paths, the Paris meridian, and a projected CRS that keeps its own projection. A test with a saved extent partly outside ±180/±90 (the clamp) is missing.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, panic or unsafe. The new non-test code stays within the never-crash rules. The tests use unwrap(), which is allowed there.
Translation. The new import note is a report.approximated message, built with format! and not wrapped in tl!. It is engine-level, not UI text, and sits beside the existing untranslated notes, so it is consistent.
Wasm and layering. There are no new dependencies and no std::time use. The change adds a call to rustgis_data::raster::crs::epsg_proj4, which is an existing public function in an allowed lower layer.
Docs.docs/user-guide/workspace.md is updated.
Hostile-params test.hostile_params_never_panic already covers project.importQgis. I did not check that it feeds this path with junk CRS strings, but the new code has no panic sites.

- Recognize all four geographic PROJ aliases when importing QGIS
projects so their saved views stay in degrees.
- Cover each alias through project.importQgis.
I found nothing that needs fixing before merge. I read the diff and the surrounding code, and I did not build or run the tests.
What I checked
Never crash: the new code has no unwrap, expect, indexing or panic. Geographic::of uses ?, parse().ok() and strip_prefix, so junk CRS strings return None and take the old path.
Layering and wasm:rustgis_data::raster::crs::epsg_proj4 is a public function in a public module, and rustgis_data is already a dependency of the engine. The change adds no dependency, std::time use or file I/O.
Match order: the Web Mercator arm comes before the degrees arm, so EPSG:3857 is unaffected. Projected systems such as EPSG:2056 still go through other => other.
Saved view in degrees: clamping to ±180/±90 and filtering empty extents is sound. When the saved view misses the data, go_to_view still falls back to the layers' extent.
Tests: they cover EPSG codes, OGC:CRS84, PROJ strings with leading whitespace, the latlong/lonlat/latlon aliases, +pm=0.0 and +pm=paris, and a projected control case.
Interface text: the notes are engine data, not UI text, so tl! is not needed.
Bugs
None found.
Security
None found. The CRS string is only parsed as tokens and never executed or used in a path.
Performance
None found.
Quality (all nits, low confidence)
qgis.rs:~21-22: inside the degrees.is_some_and(...) match guard, the inner degrees.is_some_and(|g| !g.greenwich) re-checks degrees. Binding g once, for example with if let Some(g) = degrees, would be a little clearer. (Confidence: high that it is a nit. No behaviour change.)
Geographic::of: the wgs84 flag only recognises the exact strings +towgs84=0,0,0,0,0,0,0 and +towgs84=0,0,0. A definition written as 0.0,0.0,... would show a spurious "drawn in Equirectangular on WGS 84" note. This is harmless and rare. (Confidence: low.)
+datum=NAD83 is treated as identical to WGS 84, so no note is shown. That matches PROJ's default and the PR description. The difference is up to about a metre, which is not visible when drawing.
AGENTS.md
No violations. Both new tests are in the engine tests next to the existing QGIS tests, and the docs are updated.

Summary
Piece 1 of #882. It implements the proposal in #883 and is a draft until a maintainer has replied there.
A QGIS project whose coordinate system is in degrees opened in Web Mercator.
map.projectionrefuses degrees, so the import fell back and added a note. QGIS draws such a project as plate carrée, with longitude and latitude as x and y, and RustGIS's Equirectangular preset draws it the same way. In the audit corpus, 9 of the 27 real projects are in EPSG:4326, for example the Training Manual'sworld.qgs.Changes in
project.importQgis(crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs):equirectangularpreset. That means an EPSG code whose PROJ definition is+proj=longlat, orOGC:CRS84.map.projectionitself is unchanged and still refuses degrees when a user picks one.+towgs84=0,…) and NAD83 get no note.No new command, parameter or dependency. The Workspace guide's QGIS section mentions the projection.
Testing
a_qgis_project_in_degrees_opens_in_equirectangular(engine) imports projects in each of these systems and checks the projection, the notes and the view:cargo fmt, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings, cargo test --workspaceandcargo xtask layerspass. Two font tests were skipped because they fail locally only, on this machine's fonts.world.qgs(data from qgis/QGIS-Training-Data) in QGIS 4.2.3 and in RustGIS before and after this change:Summary by CodeRabbit
