Summary

Step 3 of #579, and its last. #604 already took a stack of raster layers ("layers", a date each from the layer's or file's name, or "dates") and a raster's bands ("layer", a date each from the bands' names, or "dates") as cubes for cube.trend, and cube.reduce reads the same ones. Two parts the issue asked for were still missing, and this PR adds them:

  • A stack whose layers are on different grids. It was refused ("put them on one grid first (Raster Functions › Resample)"). Now every layer on another grid than the first one listed is resampled onto it as raster.function does with resample and target: rasterops::resample_to, nearest neighbour through longitude/latitude, so another cell size, extent or coordinate system works. Stack keeps the target grid and resamples a slice when it is read (TimeCube::slice), on the run's thread. Only one resampled slice is held at a time, and nothing heavy runs in cube_from, which the Workflows pane calls on the UI thread. Cells a layer doesn't cover are empty on that date. A layer without coordinates (a scan not yet georeferenced) on another grid is refused before the run starts.
  • Band descriptions inside a GeoTIFF. A multi-band file's bands were dated by their names, but those only came from an .aux.xml sidecar (pam.rs). GDAL and rasterio write a GeoTIFF's band descriptions inside the file, in its GDAL_METADATA tag (42112), and the reader ignored that tag. pam::parse_gdal_metadata reads the tag's <Item role="description" sample="N"> entries. geotiff::read_limited applies them through Raster::apply_pam, so every GeoTIFF read (file, upload, the web app's partial reads) names its bands as GDAL does. A sidecar is applied afterwards and wins. This helps beyond cubes: band pickers and Identify now show NDVI 2024-06-01 instead of Band 1.
  • Workflows pane, Trend section:
    • the layer list shows each layer's date from its file name too, as the command reads it (cube::layer_date), not only from the layer's name;
    • a new Dates field passes typed dates ("dates") for layers or bands with no date in their names.
  • Docs: docs/user-guide/analysis.md (the series a trend takes) and docs/user-guide/data.md (band descriptions).

Choices in this PR

  • Resampled automatically, onto the first layer listed. This follows the issue ("resampled onto the first, as raster.function does with resample and target"). No target parameter: the order of layers picks the grid. The pane sends the ticked layers in its list's order, which the typed dates follow too, so the first ticked layer in the list gives the grid. The date order still sets the series' order.
  • Nearest neighbour only, the only resampling raster.function has. It keeps the files' values (class codes stay class codes in cube.reduce's categorical statistics), and it is what a stack of scenes on near-identical grids needs. A user who wants averaging resamples first with Raster Functions.
  • Resampled when read, not when the cube is built. Building happens on the UI thread in the app. Reading happens on the run's thread, with progress and Cancel.
  • The descriptions come from the file's own tag, then from the sidecar, as GDAL reads them. Only role="description" items are read; scale, offset and units in the same tag are left for another change.
  • The other cubes (a raster's bands, a Zarr variable, a STAC collection's files) are one grid by construction, so their off-grid check stays as it was.

Limits

  • Resampling is nearest neighbour, with a coordinate transform per cell of the target grid for each date that needs it. A long stack of large layers on another grid takes longer than one already on the grid.
  • The target grid is the first listed layer's, whole: a stack can't be cut to a smaller area or a coarser cell here (Raster Functions › Clip or Resample first). The size caps (MAX_VALUES, cells × dates, and MAX_PAIRS) apply to that grid.
  • Only band descriptions are read from GDAL_METADATA. A GeoTIFF read through GDAL's conversion (formats RustGIS doesn't read itself) keeps whatever names the converted file has.
  • geotiff::write still writes one band and no description, so a band's name doesn't survive an export.

Testing

  • a_trend_over_stacked_and_multiband_geotiffs (engine), on small GeoTIFF files written to a temporary folder and opened with layer.addData. Each file has 4 × 2 cells over twelve years: two cells rise 0.02 a year, two fall 0.01 a year, three are noise, and one has three values (no-data on the other dates).
    • Stack: twelve files named either ndvi_2013-07-01 or MODIS-style MOD13Q1.A2014182. One has cells half as wide (8 × 4), and one covers a larger area with the grid two columns and a row in from its corner. The significant slope layer finds the four planted trends (0.02 and −0.01 within 0.001) and leaves the noise and the short cell empty. cube.reduce's count is 12 in every cell (3 in the short one), so both resampled dates count. max never reaches the filler values outside the grid in the larger file. With the finer file listed first, the outputs are 8 × 4.
    • Multi-band: a 12-band Float32 GeoTIFF with descriptions NDVI 2013-07-01 … in its GDAL_METADATA tag. Its bands carry those names, and the trend over {"layer": …} finds the same cells. The same file without descriptions is refused with "give "dates"", and works with "dates".
  • reads_band_descriptions_from_gdal_metadata (pam.rs): descriptions out of order, a band described twice, other items and roles, a bad sample, an empty description, and documents that aren't GDAL metadata.
  • band_descriptions_in_the_file_name_its_bands (geotiff.rs): a GeoTIFF from the tiff encoder with the tag names its band; one without keeps its number.
  • dates_in_names (cube.rs): a renamed layer keeps its file's date, and a folder's date doesn't date it.
  • a_trend_over_a_data_cube no longer expects a layer on another grid to be refused.
  • cargo xtask ci passes on Windows: cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo test --workspace. The wasm build wasn't checked here (the new code has no cfg of its own).
  • The pane's Dates field and the layer list were not tried by hand in the app.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Trend Analysis now includes a Dates field for user-supplied dates, and can also derive dates from layer names, source-file names, or raster band descriptions.
    • Rasters on different grids can be analyzed together: later layers are resampled to the first layer’s grid using nearest-neighbour. Areas not covered by a layer are empty for that date.
    • GeoTIFF band descriptions can provide band names; descriptions in .aux.xml sidecars take precedence.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the user guide with date selection, resampling, and band-description details.

… GeoTIFF bands dated by their descriptions (opengeos#579)

Step 3 of opengeos#579. A stack's layer on another grid than the first one listed is
resampled onto it (nearest, as raster.function's resample does) as its slice
is read, instead of being refused. A GeoTIFF's band descriptions in its
GDAL_METADATA tag (as GDAL and rasterio write them) now name its bands, so a
multi-band export is dated band by band. The Workflows pane's Trend section
shows a layer's date from its file name too and takes typed dates.

Code review

The PR is generally sound. It reads band descriptions from the GDAL_METADATA tag, resamples stack layers on other grids onto the first layer's grid, dates layers by their file names, and adds a "Dates" field to the Trend form. I found no bugs.

Bugs

  • None found. I checked these:
    • parse_gdal_metadata: it ignores items without a sample or a role="description", keeps the first description per band, and bounds the sample index and the description length. It parses with the DTD disabled and a node limit.
    • The GeoTIFF reader applies the description in both the georeferenced and the unreferenced return paths, so neither path misses it.
    • Stack::slice resamples one layer at a time, so only one extra raster is held.
    • require_coordinates is checked for both the first layer and the off-grid layer before resampling, so a layer without coordinates gives an error instead of garbage.

Security

  • None. The XML parse uses a nodes limit and no DTD, and the description is truncated to 256 characters.

Performance

  • Low confidence, informational. A layer on another grid is re-resampled each time its slice is read. Multi-pass commands (for example, cube.trend followed by cube.reduce by year) repeat the work. Holding one raster at a time keeps memory bounded, and this seems an acceptable trade-off.

Quality

  • Medium confidence, posted inline on crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs:1057. The closure |c: char| c == ',' || c == ';' || c.is_whitespace() may trip clippy::manual_pattern_char_comparison under -D warnings. I suggested a char-array pattern.
  • Nit: multiband_tiff in the engine tests uses b[p] indexing. It is test-only code, so this is acceptable.

AGENTS.md

  • The new UI strings ("Dates", "from the names") are wrapped in tl!, which is correct. Missing catalog entries are allowed.
  • No unwrap/panic in non-test code, and no std::time use.
  • The command parameter docs and docs/user-guide were updated.
  • The hostile-parameters test already covers the cube.* commands. A regression test for hostile dates/sample values is covered by the pam unit test ("x" and empty values).

Code review

I read the diff and the code it calls (rasterops::resample_to, derive, Raster::apply_pam, require_coordinates, pam::MAX_BANDS). I found no blocking problems. The tests were not run (no Bash tool).

Bugs

  • None found. Checked:
    • The grid is taken from the first layer listed, before Stack::new sorts by date, so the grid does not follow date order. This matches the PR description.
    • The sample index handling is safe. checked_add(1) covers usize::MAX, the MAX_BANDS filter covers the large values, and the HashSet keeps the first description for each band.
    • Layers without coordinates are refused in cube_from, before the run starts, as the PR says.
    • derive sets the nodata value to NODATA, and resample_to writes NODATA for uncovered cells, so the resampled slices stay consistent.
    • apply_pam only changes nodata when none is set, and pam.nodata() is None for a description-only Pam. Applying GDAL_METADATA therefore does not alter nodata or statistics.

Security

  • None. The XML is parsed with allow_dtd: false and a node limit. Descriptions are cut to 256 characters, sample is bounded, and nothing in the new code can panic.

Performance

  • Low confidence: Stack::slice resamples again on every call, with a coordinate transform per target cell. If cube.reduce with by=year or by=month, or the Workflows pane, reads a slice more than once, a long stack on mixed grids pays that cost each time. Reading each slice once per run (or noting the cost in the docs) would avoid it. The PR already lists the extra cost under "Limits".

Quality

  • Low confidence: crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs splits the typed dates with |c: char| c == ',' || c == ';' || c.is_whitespace(). The nearby code uses a char-array pattern, and clippy's manual_pattern_char_comparison may flag the closure under -D warnings. cargo xtask ci will show whether it does. A mixed pattern such as [',', ';'] plus whitespace would need a separate split. The closure is fine if clippy accepts it.
  • Test coverage: the old "another grid is refused" case was removed. Nothing now tests the new refusal for an unreferenced (scan) layer on another grid, or a mixed-CRS stack beyond the resampled-cell-size and extent cases. A small regression test would help.
  • Test coverage: parse_gdal_metadata is tested well, but the sidecar-wins-over-in-file-tag precedence stated in data.md has no test. It depends on the order .aux.xml is applied after the read.
  • Nit: the Dates row in the Trend form sits above Test, so it separates the layer list from the settings. The placement is a matter of taste.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. The new non-test code has no unwrap or expect, and the unwraps in the new tests are allowed. The new UI strings use tl!. There are no new dependencies or assets. Stack stays wasm-safe, since the new code has no cfg of its own. The tests that write temp files are cfg(not(wasm32)).
  • The PR says the wasm build was not checked. Nothing in the diff suggests a problem, but CI will confirm.

crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs:1025-1059
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Send the layers in listed order when explicit dates are typed.

With explicit dates, the engine pairs the n-th date with the n-th entry of layers. The UI sends f.ticked in tick order, but the Dates field follows the visible list. Ticking B before A sends layers: [B, A]. Dates typed in the displayed order [A, B] then attach to the wrong layers. The count check passes, so the run completes and the trend uses the wrong timestamps.

The All button assigns rasters.to_vec(), so it keeps visible order. The problem needs individual ticks out of visible order together with typed dates. Dates read from the names are not affected.

Build the payload from the visible list:

Suggested fix
     if f.stack {
-        p["layers"] = json!(f.ticked);
+ // Explicit dates pair with layers by position, so send the layers in their listed order.

Code review

I read the full diff and the changed code paths. I couldn't build or run the tests, so nothing below was run.

Bugs

  • Low confidence: typed dates split on whitespace (crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs, new dates parsing). Dates are split on ,, ; and whitespace. A date with a time part, such as 2024-06-01 12:00, is split into two entries. That shifts every later date by one and gives a "dates has N" length error. The command reports the error, so it's confusing rather than harmful. Splitting only on , and ; would avoid it, or the hint text could say dates are day-only.
  • Low confidence: per-date resampling cost (Stack::slice in crates/engine/src/cmd/cube.rs). A layer on another grid is resampled every time it is read. If cube.trend or cube.reduce reads the same slice more than once, for example for each by group or in more than one pass, that work repeats. I did not trace the callers. If they do read a slice more than once, caching the resampled result would help. Peak memory is still one slice at a time, as the doc comment intends.

Security

  • No concerns. parse_gdal_metadata disallows DTDs and caps the node count. Band numbers are bounded by MAX_BANDS. Descriptions are cut to 256 characters. sample parsing uses checked_add, and the new test covers u64::MAX.

Performance

  • Nothing beyond the point above. The seen set stops the repeated search for each item.

Quality

  • date_of and one_grid remove duplicated logic well. layer_date makes the Workflows pane show the same date the command will use, which fixes a mismatch the old UI had.
  • multiband_tiff in crates/engine/src/tests.rs indexes b[p] and uses as casts. This is test-only code, so it is acceptable.
  • The new UI strings (Dates, from the names) use tl!. That follows the repo guidelines, and the catalogs don't need updating.
  • Minor: parse_gdal_metadata only matches Item elements that are direct children of the root. That is what GDAL writes. Dataset-level items without sample are ignored, which is correct.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panics in non-test code. The new code uses get, ? and checked_add.
  • A regression test covers hostile sample values. Whether hostile_params_never_panic covers the new dates path is unverified.
  • Docs are updated, and the now-wrong "rasters have to be on one grid" line is removed.
  • No new dependencies and no wasm-incompatible APIs. The new code has no std::time use and no file I/O outside the existing paths.
  • The rasterops::resample_to path needs cargo xtask ci to confirm it builds on wasm.

…ates go with the layers they're typed for

Review of opengeos#890: the layers went in the order they were ticked, while the
dates typed follow the list; ticked out of order, each took another's date.

Code review

I found no blocking problems, only minor concerns. I read the whole diff and checked apply_pam, resample_to, derive and require_coordinates in the surrounding source. I did not build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

  • None confirmed.
  • The GDAL_METADATA parser (parse_gdal_metadata) is bounded and hostile-input safe: DTDs are off, the node count is limited, sample is parsed with checked_add, band numbers are capped at MAX_BANDS, descriptions are cut to 256 characters, and the first description for a band wins. There are no unwraps in non-test code.
  • The file's own tag is applied before the .aux.xml sidecar, so the sidecar takes precedence, as the docs say.
  • A layer on another grid is refused up front with require_coordinates, so a scan that isn't georeferenced gives a clear error. Resampled slices use derive, which sets the NODATA sentinel that resample_to emits, so validity checks stay consistent.

Performance

  • Stack::slice resamples an off-grid layer and builds a new Raster (stats and extent included) on every call. Statistics grouped by year or month may read a date more than once, so large stacks could repeat this work. Confidence: low-medium. Inline comment posted.

Quality

  • Nearest-neighbour resampling onto a coarser first grid silently drops pixels, and the first layer listed sets the resolution. The docs say "nearest", but a short note would help. Confidence: low. Covered in the same inline comment.
  • The Dates field in the UI splits on whitespace as well as commas, so a date with a time part would be split in two. The dates text also stays set when the user changes the series. Confidence: low. Inline comment posted.
  • The date_of and layer_date helpers remove duplicated code and let the UI show the same date the command will use. This is a good change.

AGENTS.md

  • The new UI strings ("Dates", "from the names") are wrapped in tl!, and the catalogs don't need updating in a PR.
  • The code is wasm-safe, uses no new dependencies, and adds no assets.
  • The new tests cover the new behaviour: the parser's edge cases, a GeoTIFF with the tag, mixed grids, an unreferenced scan, the sidecar and the typed dates. The old "another grid is refused" check was removed because that behaviour no longer applies.
  • The documentation (analysis.md, data.md) was updated to match.
  • I did not check whether hostile_params_never_panic covers the new dates and layers combinations. It is worth confirming cargo xtask ci is green.

Code review

I found no correctness bugs or security problems. I read the diff and the helpers it relies on (rasterops::resample_to, rasterops::derive, Raster::apply_pam). I did not build the code or run the tests. Three minor inline comments are posted.

Bugs

  • No definite bugs. The GDAL_METADATA parser, resample-on-read path and pane ordering all look correct.
  • Silent loss on a non-overlapping layer (low to medium confidence). A layer that lies entirely outside the first layer's grid resamples to all no-data, and the run goes on with fewer valid dates. Consider refusing or warning when the extents don't intersect (inline comment on cube.rs).

Security

  • No issues. parse_gdal_metadata disables DTDs, caps the node count, caps the band index (MAX_BANDS) and trims descriptions to 256 characters. The checked_add and HashSet dedupe are sound, and the hostile-input tests cover them.

Performance

  • Repeated resampling (low to medium confidence). Stack::slice resamples on every call for an off-grid layer. If any caller reads a date more than once, the work is repeated. Please confirm each caller reads a slice once, or cache the last resampled slice (inline comment on cube.rs).
  • Per-frame layer_date (low confidence). The pane calls it every frame for every raster in the list (inline comment on analysispane.rs).

Quality

  • Pane label (nit). The layer list still shows "no date in the name" when the Dates field is filled.
  • Duplicate layer names (nit). layer_date resolves a layer by name, so two layers with the same name show the same date.
  • Test coverage is good. The tests cover mixed grids, an ungeoreferenced scan, a multi-band file with and without descriptions, and sidecar precedence.
  • Resampled slice naming (nit). The resampled slice keeps the source layer's name but carries the target grid. That is fine for error messages.

AGENTS.md

  • The new code has no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe outside tests, and it uses get() and checked_add.
  • The new pane strings use tl!.
  • Stack holds the grid itself and cube_from does no heavy work, which suits the UI-thread constraint, and the new code has no cfg of its own.
  • The PR says the wasm build was not checked. CI should confirm it.
  • Docs are updated.
  • I did not check the hostile_params_never_panic coverage for the new dates and layers combinations. Please confirm it still passes.

…d as a date with no value

Review of opengeos#890.

Code review

I read the whole diff and checked it against rasterops::{resample_to, derive} and Raster::apply_pam. I found nothing that should block the merge, only low-confidence notes. I could not run the tests.

Bugs

  • Workflows pane, low confidence. The typed dates are kept in TrendForm and sent whenever the field is non-empty. This holds in single-layer and Zarr mode too, and after the layer selection changes. A stale value from an earlier stack run then makes the command fail with a length mismatch. Nothing in the form shows it is still active. Consider sending dates only when it applies, or clearing it when the source changes.
  • Workflows pane, low confidence. The per-layer label (YYYY-MM-DD) comes from layer_date, which ignores the Dates field. Once dates are typed, the list still shows the dates read from the names. This is cosmetic.
  • Resampling, low confidence. A stack with mixed grids resamples with nearest neighbour onto the first layer's grid. A finer layer therefore contributes one pixel per cell, not the mean. The docs say this, but it can bias a trend across dates. The layer order picks the grid, so reordering layers can change results. The new test covers this case (fine_first).

Security

  • Nothing found. The GDAL_METADATA parse sets allow_dtd: false and a node limit. It also caps the band index at MAX_BANDS, caps descriptions at 256 chars, and uses checked_add and HashSet dedup.

Performance

  • Stack::slice resamples a mismatched layer on every call. If the same slice is read more than once (for example cube.reduce with by=year or several passes), the same layer is resampled again. It is bounded to one slice at a time, which is the stated design. A small cache would only be worth it if profiling shows a hot spot.

Quality

  • date_of and one_grid remove duplicated logic, and layer_date stops the UI and the command disagreeing about dates. Both are good changes.
  • parse_gdal_metadata pre-checks role == "description" but does not check name == "DESCRIPTION". That is harmless, since GDAL always pairs them.
  • The test helper multiband_tiff is long and hand-rolls the TIFF IFD. It is acceptable for a test, but a tiff-crate encoder would be shorter if it can write multi-band data.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap or panic in the new non-test code. The .ok()? and get() style is followed.
  • The new UI strings, tl!("Dates") and tl!("from the names"), are wrapped. Catalog entries are not required.
  • The tests use unwrap, which is allowed. multiband_tiff indexes b[p] in test code only.
  • Docs are updated (analysis.md, data.md). The new code builds on wasm: the new test is gated with cfg(not(wasm32)), and the library code uses no std::time or file I/O.
  • Confidence that the guidelines are met: medium-high.

…ayers and one layer

Review of opengeos#890: dates typed for a stack stayed in the field for a raster's
bands, failing its run on their count.

Code review

I read the full diff and checked it against rasterops::{derive, resample_to} and Raster::require_coordinates. I did not run the tests or the build, since there is no Bash tool here. I found no blocking problems, so I posted no inline comments.

Bugs

  • None found. The new code does not panic: it uses checked_add, filter(<= MAX_BANDS), a 256-character cap on descriptions and allow_dtd: false. The parser keeps the first description for a band that is described twice. The sidecar .aux.xml still overrides the in-file tag, because it is applied afterwards (confidence: high).
  • cube_from rejects a layer that has no coordinates, or that misses the first layer's area, before the run starts. This relies on Raster::extent() being in longitude/latitude for every CRS. That looks right, because compute_extent seems to normalise it, but I did not trace it fully. If it were in native units, the intersects check could reject valid layers whose CRS differs from the first layer's (confidence: low).

Security

  • None found. The GDAL metadata XML is untrusted input and is parsed with the DTD disabled and a node limit.

Performance

  • Stack::slice resamples a layer on every call (nearest neighbour over the target grid). A trend run that reads slices more than once, for example a statistics pass and then the main pass, repeats that work. This is acceptable because it keeps memory to one slice at a time, which the doc comment says is intended (confidence: low).

Quality

  • The two long params strings in cube.rs each gain a clause, so the near-duplicate text now has to be kept in sync in two places. That is a pre-existing pattern.
  • The UI sends ticked layers in list order so that typed dates line up with them. The Dates field is also cleared when the series kind changes. Both are sensible. The mapping from typed date to layer is invisible to the user, but the command rejects mismatched counts.
  • date_of and layer_date remove a duplicated lookup between the UI and the engine.

AGENTS.md

  • New UI strings ("Dates", "from the names") are wrapped in tl!, as required, and the catalogs do not need updating in the PR.
  • There is no unwrap/expect in non-test code. The new tests use unwrap, which is allowed.
  • The docs (analysis.md, data.md) are updated and the stale "must be on one grid" line is removed.
  • The old "another grid" refusal test is dropped and replaced by tests for resampling, a missing-coordinates scan and a layer that misses the first layer's area. Coverage looks adequate.
  • I could not confirm that the new a_trend_over_stacked_and_multiband_geotiffs test is green.

Code review

I read the full diff and the surrounding code. I did not run the build or the tests. I found no blocking problems, only a few minor concerns.

Bugs

  • Different CRS in the "outside the first layer's area" check (cube.rs, g.extent().intersects(&r.extent())), low confidence. The check treats the two extents as comparable. If Raster::extent() is always in lon/lat, which compute_extent appears to do, this is correct. If it is in native units, a UTM layer against a lon/lat first layer would be wrongly rejected or accepted. I'd add a test with a differing-CRS pair to confirm.
  • Repeated resampling (Stack::slice), low confidence. A mismatched layer is resampled and allocated every time a slice is read. If a command reads the stack more than once (for example cube.reduce with by: year, or a pass to find the grid and then a pass to compute), the same work is repeated. The effect is bounded and only one slice is held at a time. Say so in a comment, or cache if profiling shows a cost.
  • Resampling and average (cube.rs), informational. Resampling is nearest-neighbour, so a finer layer contributes one pixel per cell and not their mean. The docs state this, so I treat it as a documented limitation.

Security

  • Nothing found. parse_gdal_metadata disallows DTDs, caps the node count, caps band numbers at MAX_BANDS, uses checked_add, and truncates descriptions to 256 characters. There is no unwrap or panic in non-test code.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. The HashSet de-duplication in parse_gdal_metadata is fine.

Quality

  • geotiff.rs: GDAL_METADATA is read before the sample and byte-size limits are applied. This is harmless because the XML parse is bounded, but a very large tag is still read into a string first.
  • analysispane.rs: the "A date is missing between two commas" message goes through tl!, which fits the project's rules. The dates parsing and the clearing of the field when the radio switches both look correct.
  • The two long params strings in cube.rs are edited in a single line each, which is consistent with the existing style.

AGENTS.md

  • Never crash: no unwrap, expect or panic in the added non-test code, and the new tests cover hostile band indices and sample values.
  • Wasm: a_trend_over_stacked_and_multiband_geotiffs is gated with #[cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))].
  • Translatable text: the new UI strings are wrapped in tl!.
  • Docs: analysis.md and data.md are updated. The old "rasters have to be on one grid" note is removed, and a test replaces the old refusal test.
  • Test status: I could not run cargo xtask ci, so I'm assuming it is green.

Code review

I read the full diff and checked the surrounding source. I found no correctness bugs and no security problems. The notes below are minor.

Bugs

  • None found. Checks that came out fine:
    • parse_gdal_metadata uses checked_add, caps the band number at MAX_BANDS, keeps the first description per band, truncates descriptions to 256 characters, and sets allow_dtd: false with a node limit.
    • Stack::slice resamples through resample_to and derive, so only one resampled slice is held at a time.
    • cube_from rejects scans with no coordinates and layers that miss the first layer's area before the run starts.

Security

  • None found. Parsing the XML tag from untrusted TIFFs is bounded (DTD off, node limit, band cap, text cap). There are no unwraps in the non-test code.

Performance

  • crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs:633: layer_date looks up the layer by name and searches for a date for every raster, every frame, while the pane is open. This is cheap per layer but grows with the layer count. Confidence: low.

Quality

  • crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs:1062: the "A date is missing between two commas" message overwrites any earlier bad message. The Dates field is also sent when the series is a Zarr variable, and the layer list still shows the name-derived date even when dates are typed. Confidence: medium.
  • A stack's grid is set by the first layer listed, not the earliest date. The docs say this, and the UI now sends layers in list order, so it's consistent. Nearest-neighbour resampling of a finer layer is also documented.
  • The new tests are thorough: planted trends, MODIS and ISO dates, other grids, Web Mercator, a scan, a layer outside the area, and a sidecar taking precedence over the tag. The hand-built TIFF helper in tests.rs is long, and a shared test helper might serve better if more tests need it.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic! in the non-test code. The new UI strings use tl!. Wasm builds are unaffected, since the new multi-band test is cfg(not(wasm32)).
  • Docs were updated in analysis.md and data.md.
  • I could not run cargo xtask ci, so I haven't confirmed that fmt, clippy and the tests pass.

I'm partway through the review. I've read the whole diff and the resample_to, derive and apply_pam helpers it relies on. Next I'm writing up the findings.

Code review

I found no blocking problems. I read the diff and the helpers it calls, but I didn't build the code or run the tests. The notes below are minor, and I didn't post any inline comments.

Bugs

  • Low confidence: resampling has no cap on the target grid's cost. Stack::slice calls resample_to every time a slice is read, with a coordinate transform for each target cell. cube.reduce with by: year or by: month, or a second pass over the same cube, could resample the same date more than once. I did not trace every call path in read_slices. If slices can be read twice, a stack on mixed grids would pay that cost twice. The PR description already says resampling takes longer, so this only matters if a path actually rereads slices.
  • Low confidence: the extent check only compares each layer with the first one. cube_from rejects a layer that doesn't intersect the first layer's extent. A layer that barely overlaps passes and gives a nearly empty date. Cells with too few valid dates are already dropped by minValid, so the result is acceptable, and the PR documents that uncovered cells are empty.
  • Low confidence: GDAL_METADATA is only read for descriptions. The sample/role parsing is careful. It bounds the index with checked_add and MAX_BANDS, keeps the first description for a band, and caps length at 256 characters. The parser also disables DTDs and limits XML nodes. A dataset-level DESCRIPTION item (no sample) is correctly ignored.

Security

  • No problems found. The XML parser is hostile-input safe: no DTD, node limit, and an explicit root-name check. The new code has no unwrap, expect or indexing (the unwrap calls in the new tests are allowed in test code), and slice uses get.

Performance

  • Low: layer_date(&app.session, n) in the Trend pane runs for every raster layer on every frame. It does a layer-id lookup, a layer fetch and a regex-style date scan on the name and file name. That is probably fine for tens of layers. For hundreds, consider caching the result keyed by layer id.

Quality

  • Nit: the Stack.grid doc comment says "for a stack of layers on more than one", which reads awkwardly. first.filter(|_| grids) is correct but terse; a short comment on why grid stays None for single-grid stacks would help.
  • Nit: the pane puts the new Dates row above Test in the grid. It also applies in the "One layer" mode, where it's used for a raster's bands. The tl!("from the names") hint is generic. Consider a hint that says it applies to bands as well.
  • Nit: one_grid is now shared by off_grid and Stack::slice, which is a good reuse. The comparison src.transform == target.transform in resample_to is stricter than same_grid. In the other direction, one_grid uses same_grid's tolerance, so layers a rounding error apart skip resampling and are used as stored. This looks intended.
  • Positive: the tests cover a mixed-grid stack, a multi-band file with descriptions, and the hostile parse_gdal_metadata inputs. The PR does not say whether hostile_params_never_panic covers layers on mixed grids. Given the "every crash fix gets a regression test" rule, it may be worth checking.

  • The new interface strings (Dates, from the names, A date is missing between two commas) use tl!, as required. No new dependencies or assets.
  • The PR says the wasm build was not checked. The new code has no cfg of its own and uses crate::xml, so the risk is low, but the CI wasm job should confirm it.
  • cargo xtask ci is reported as run on Windows only.
  • The pane changes were not tried by hand in the app, so I'd treat the UI behaviour as unverified.

Check the known stack size before resampling.

If the earliest date belongs to an off-grid layer and the first layer’s grid exceeds a run limit, Stack::slice resamples the entire grid before either run checks that limit. A large run can spend substantial time and memory on work that must fail. Override Stack::size() with the first layer’s grid dimensions so both runs reject the request before reading a slice. The resampler allocates one value per target cell. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update Stack::size() to report the first layer’s grid dimensions so both runs
check the known stack size before Stack::slice reaches rasterops::resample_to;
this prevents resampling an oversized grid before the run limit rejects it.

… large is refused before resampling

Review of opengeos#890: a stack whose earliest date is on another grid resampled it
before either run checked its limits. A trend over a cube read whole also
checks its values (cells × dates) up front.

Code review

I read the full diff and checked it against the surrounding code (Raster::apply_pam, require_coordinates, extent, TimeCube::pieces). I did not build the code or run the tests. I found no bugs, security problems or AGENTS.md violations that I'm confident in. I posted no inline comments.

Bugs

  • None found. Two edge cases I checked:
    • The intersects check compares extents. The new test with a Web Mercator layer implies extent() is already in lon/lat, but I did not confirm that. If it is in layer units, the check would wrongly reject (or accept) cross-CRS stacks. Confidence in a problem: low.
    • parse_gdal_metadata only reads items that carry both role="description" and sample. A dataset-level description (no sample) is ignored, which matches GDAL's per-band semantics.

Security

  • None. The new XML parse uses allow_dtd: false and XML_NODES, bounds the band index (MAX_BANDS, checked_add), and truncates descriptions to 256 characters.

Performance

  • Each resampled stack slice builds a new raster on every read. Stack::pieces() is 1, so each slice is read once per run. Only one resampled slice is held at a time, and the new too_many_values check refuses oversized runs before any slice is read. Fine as written. Confidence: high.

Quality

  • The "too many values" message is now shared through too_many_values, and one_grid and date_of remove duplicated logic. Good.
  • The UI orders the ticked layers by list order, so typed dates line up with the layers. That is a sensible fix.
  • The test helper multiband_tiff hand-builds a TIFF and indexes b[p]. It is test-only, so it is acceptable under the no-panic rule.

AGENTS.md

  • All new UI strings ("Dates", "from the names", "A date is missing between two commas") use tl!.
  • No unwrap or expect in non-test code.
  • Docs are updated (analysis.md, data.md).
  • The hostile_params_never_panic coverage is unchanged. The new dates and layers paths go through existing parameters, so I see no gap.
