feat(ui): autosave unsaved work and offer it back after a crash - #896
The desktop app now keeps a recovery copy of unsaved work and offers it back after a crash, a kill or a power cut. Until now, everything since the last save was lost. A project that was never saved was lost entirely: the app noticed the unclean exit, but only to open the World Atlas instead of the start-up project.
Autosave
While the project has unsaved changes, the app writes a copy every 5 minutes by default, and only when the project changed since the last copy. Settings › Autosave sets the interval (Off, 1, 2, 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes); ui.autosave={"minutes": N} does the same (0 is off).
The copy is the text a save writes, without layer passwords, keys and tokens. It is cloned on the interface thread, then serialized and written atomically on a background thread, so a large project doesn't stall the app. Writes and removals keep their order, so a slow write can't bring back a copy that a save removed.
It lives in recovery/ in the app-data folder (%LOCALAPPDATA%\RustGIS, ~/.local/share/rustgis, …), not beside the project. That covers never-saved projects and keeps it out of synced and versioned folders. On Unix the folder is this user's only.
Save, Save As, New, Open and a clean quit remove it.
Recovery
If a copy is left at start, a dialog asks Recover unsaved work? It names the project, its file and how old the copy is, and offers Recover, Discard or Later.
Recovered work opens unsaved under its original file, so Save writes it back there. The dialog warns if that file changed on disk after the copy was made. A never-saved project stays untitled.
A copy that doesn't open (cut short, garbled, a newer format) says why in the dialog and can still be discarded; it never stops the start.
If RustGIS crashes again after Later, neither copy replaces the other. Up to five wait and are offered newest first. After one is recovered, the rest wait for the next start, since recovering another would replace the recovered work. Recovery refuses to replace a project that has unsaved changes of its own.
ui.recover opens the offered copy and ui.recover={"discard": true} deletes it; ui.autosave also reports what is waiting.
What it is tied to. Only the copy of RustGIS holding the existing run marker (apps/rustgis/src/main.rs, mod running) gets a recovery folder. A second copy running alongside can't lock the marker, so it doesn't autosave and can't offer or overwrite the first one's work. Where the settings folder can't lock files, there is no autosave either.
Code
rustgis-engine: Project::recovery_text strips secrets from a copy of the project. Unlike saved_text, it doesn't register the snapshot used to restore secrets when identical text is reopened, so frequent copies can't evict the user's own saves from those 32 slots.
rustgis-ui-egui: a new autosave module with the timer, the dialog, the two commands, a RecoveryStore trait in Services, and the desktop's FolderStore. Its folder layout: autosave.recovery for this run's copy and recovered-<n>.recovery for copies earlier runs left. Each is one file: a JSON line describing the copy, then the project text, so a crash mid-write can't pair a description with the wrong project. ui_shot takes "recovery": "/dir" on its first line to show the dialog.
apps/rustgis: wires the store to the run marker and clears this run's copy in on_exit.
The web app passes no store, so the browser has no autosave yet. localStorage is too small for embedded features; IndexedDB or OPFS would be a separate change behind the same trait.
No new dependency, no change to the .rgis format or to existing command ids and parameters.
Choices worth checking
A clean quit removes the copy, as the roadmap item is about crashes. The desktop app has no "Save changes?" prompt on New, Open or Quit, so quitting still loses unsaved work. That prompt, or keeping copies across a clean quit, is a separate decision.
A pan or zoom with unsaved changes counts as a change. The camera is saved in the project, so the next copy keeps it. Writes are still at most one per interval.
The dialog's first line is one whole sentence per time unit ("…kept 3 minutes ago."), so translators get full sentences and right-to-left languages aren't transformed twice.
User guide (Workspace › Autosave and recovery, Settings, Projects), installation (data folder, crashes), ROADMAP and GEOLIBRE_PARITY are updated; the roadmap item now names the browser as what remains.
Testing
cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, all tests, layers), and cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web builds.
New UI tests (crates/ui-egui/tests/autosave.rs) drive real frames and click the dialog's buttons:
a copy is written after an edit, not while nothing is unsaved; it names the project and its file; an unclean stop leaves it, the next start offers it with the changed-on-disk warning; Recover keeps the original path and unsaved state, and Save removes the copy.
a clean exit leaves nothing to recover.
Later offers it again at the next start, and the run's own unsaved work doesn't replace it; Discard deletes it.
two crashes with Later in between: both copies kept, newest offered first with the count of older ones, the other at the next start; recovery refused over unsaved work.
damaged copies (empty, no header, cut short, newer format, garbled, not UTF-8) are refused in the dialog, never crash, and can be discarded.
the interval setting: validation, Off removes the copy and writes none, remembered by the next launch, an out-of-range stored value falls back; a shell without a store reports autosave as unavailable.
a junk-parameter sweep of ui.autosave and ui.recover.
Engine test: a recovery copy keeps no layer token, the open project keeps it, and opening the copy restores none.
running::Marker::locked added to the existing marker test.
Not covered by tests: a copy over the 512 MiB project limit (it would need a test to read that much), and a settings folder that can't lock files.
ui_shot: the recovery dialog after a simulated crash of a saved project, and Settings › Autosave with its menu open.
The desktop app autosaves copies of unsaved work every five minutes by default. Adjust the interval in Settings or turn autosave off.
After an unexpected shutdown, choose to recover, discard, or defer unsaved work. Up to five copies are retained and offered newest first, with later copies offered on subsequent launches.
Recovery copies exclude saved connection credentials and are cleared when work is saved, autosave is turned off, the project is clean, or the app exits cleanly. Recovery is unavailable while the open project has unsaved changes. Autosave and recovery are desktop-only.
Autosave is available only when the app can safely manage recovery data; otherwise, the app explains why it is unavailable.
Documentation
Updated the user guide and installation information with autosave and recovery instructions, including the browser’s lack of autosave and recovery.
While the project has unsaved changes, the desktop app keeps a recovery
copy in the app-data folder's recovery/ (every 5 minutes by default,
Settings > Autosave, ui.autosave), written atomically on a background
thread without layer secrets. Save, New, Open and a clean quit remove it.
A copy left at start is offered in a dialog: Recover (opens unsaved under
its original file, warning if that file changed since), Discard or Later.
Copies from repeated crashes are kept, up to five, and offered newest
first. Only the run holding the run marker autosaves, so a second copy
can't touch the first one's work. The browser has no store yet.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Recovery serialization and copy contract crates/engine/src/project.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/engine/tests/recovery_paths.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/autosave.rs
Recovery text strips layer-address credentials and enforces the project size limit. Autosave state tracks revisions, intervals, and pending recovery metadata. Tests check credential removal and recovery paths.
Folder store and background writes crates/ui-egui/src/autosave.rs
The desktop folder store manages pending copies and queued writes. It limits retained copies, reports failures, and uses an older copy if a newer write fails. Tests cover storage, retry, and failure behavior.
Autosave, recovery, and app interface crates/ui-egui/src/autosave.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/autosave.rs
The UI ticks autosave, exposes settings and recovery commands, and presents pending copies for recovery, discard, or deferral. Tests cover settings and recovery outcomes.
The desktop app provides recovery storage only when its run marker is locked. Browser services set recovery to unavailable, and the UI example accepts a recovery folder. Documentation and status entries describe desktop support and browser limitations.

Explanation
The changes remain within [#873]. The engine serializer, UI autosave module, recovery store, run-marker wiring, tests, and documentation support desktop autosave and crash recovery. Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#873] The PR implements the main desktop autosave and recovery flow, commands, settings, secret removal, atomic background writes, and run-marker gating. The linked issue still has unmet coding requirements. The reported tests do not cover an oversized recovery copy. They do not verify that a second app instance cannot modify or offer the first instance's copy; the marker unit test does not verify the recovery slot. The PR also states that pan and zoom with unsaved changes count as changes, while [#873] requires that a view-only change does not trigger autosave. The existing view test starts with no unsaved work and does not test this case.
Resolution
Add an automated test for an oversized recovery copy, including safe refusal and discard. Add an integration test with two instances that verifies the second instance neither writes nor offers the first instance's recovery copy. Align camera-only changes with [#873], or update the linked issue before keeping that behavior, and add a dirty-project view-only autosave test.

Any offer_error hides Recover for the rest of the session, including the transient "the open project has unsaved changes: save them before recovering other work" error from recover (line 233). A user who gets it (e.g. after opening a file from the command line that is dirty) saves, but can no longer recover without restarting. Suggest hiding Recover only for read/open failures, or clearing offer_error when the project becomes clean. Confidence: medium.

Fixed in 13131a5. While the open project has unsaved changes, the dialog now says so ("The open project has unsaved changes: save them, then recover this copy.") and leaves Recover out until they are saved. It no longer runs the refused recovery and hides Recover for the session. Only a copy that fails to read or open still hides Recover, and Discard and Later stay available.
The new UI test recover_returns_once_the_open_work_is_saved edits before answering, checks that Recover is held back, saves, then recovers the copy.

app.session.project.clone() runs on the UI thread at every interval. For projects with large in-memory layers this is a full deep copy and can cause a visible hitch. Only the serialization is off-thread. Worth measuring, or sharing layer data via Arc. Confidence: low-medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This clone doesn't copy layer data. A layer's features are Features(Arc<Vec<Feature>>) (crates/data/src/lib.rs:155), copy-on-write, and raster pixels and embedded bytes are Arcs too (crates/map/src/raster.rs:28,48). A project clone copies the maps, styles and layer settings and shares those buffers.
Session::guarded already makes this same clone for the undo snapshot of every command that changes the project (crates/engine/src/lib.rs:950). Autosave adds at most one more per interval, so no change here.
I read the visible diff (about the first 1,000 lines, which covers autosave.rs, main.rs and the engine changes) plus the stats. I did not read the rest of the lib.rs and ribbon.rs hunks, the docs, or the tests/autosave.rs integration tests. I did not build or run anything. Overall the design is careful: ordered background writes, atomic file writes, a lock-guarded recovery folder, and layer secrets stripped from recovery copies.
Bugs
Recover button hidden after a transient error (crates/ui-egui/src/autosave.rs:316). Any offer_error hides Recover for the rest of the session. That includes the recoverable "the open project has unsaved changes: save them before recovering" error, so the user has to restart. Confidence: medium.
Security
No issues found. The recovery text goes through strip_addresses, so tokens and passwords are not written to the copies. On Unix the folder is set to 0700. Reads are size-bounded. Recovery copies don't get registered as "files this process wrote", so they don't evict the snapshots that restore secrets. Windows folder ACLs aren't tightened, but that is minor.
Performance
Project clone on the UI thread (crates/ui-egui/src/autosave.rs:181). project.clone() runs on the UI thread at every autosave interval. A project with large layers could cause a visible hitch. Only the serialization is off-thread. Confidence: low-medium.
Quality
No other findings. The code is documented and follows the repo style (tl!/i18n::fmt, no unwrap, non-wasm code behind cfg).
AGENTS.md
No violations seen. The web build opts out with recovery: None, the engine has a regression test, and the docs and roadmap are updated. I didn't confirm that cargo xtask ci passes.

Review follow-ups for opengeos#896:
- A recovery copy that failed in the background is made again at the
next interval, though the project hasn't changed since; the failure is
still told once.
- While the open project has unsaved changes, the recovery dialog says so
and holds Recover back until they are saved, instead of failing and
hiding Recover for the rest of the session.
- The copy's age reads "a minute ago" between one and two minutes, not
"1 minutes ago".

Low-to-medium confidence (performance): app.session.project.clone() runs on the UI thread at every interval while the project is dirty. For a project that embeds large layers (features, rasters), a deep clone every 1 to 5 minutes can cause a visible frame hitch and a memory spike, and the queued Job::Write(Box<Project>) holds that clone until the worker gets to it. Only the serialization is off-thread. If layer data is Arc-shared this is cheap, but if it isn't, consider a size threshold, a longer back-off for big projects, or a note in the docs.
Related, minor: take_error is only polled in tick, which runs only when something repaints. A background failure may not show until the next input event, because nothing requests a repaint after a failed write.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The clone: layer data is Arc-shared, so the clone is cheap and the queued job holds no second copy of features or pixels. A layer's features are Features(Arc<Vec<Feature>>), copy-on-write (crates/data/src/lib.rs:155), and raster pixels and embedded bytes are Arcs too (crates/map/src/raster.rs:28,48). Undo already takes the same clone for every edit (crates/engine/src/lib.rs:950). Details in my reply on the earlier thread: #896 (comment)
The idle window: fixed in d9c96f4. RecoveryStore::set_wake gives the store the interface's repaint, and the folder store's background thread calls it after recording a failure, so the notice shows without waiting for input. The new test a_failed_copy_wakes_the_interface makes a real write fail (a folder where the copy goes) and checks the wake and the reported error.
I read the first 600 lines of the diff, then the rest of crates/ui-egui/src/autosave.rs (the trait, state, tick, recover, the dialog and FolderStore). I did not read lib.rs, ribbon.rs, the integration tests in crates/ui-egui/tests/autosave.rs or the docs changes beyond the diff's first 600 lines. The feature is autosave and crash recovery for the desktop app. The design is careful and I found no correctness bugs.
Bugs
None found. I checked these:
The ordering of write, clear and adopt jobs on the background thread.
The skip-superseded-write logic in work().
The retry path after a failed write.
Refusing to recover over a dirty project.
The run-marker locked gating.
Security
None found.
Recovery text is stripped of layer secrets via recovery_text, and a test covers this.
The recovery folder is 0700 on Unix.
Reads of recovery files are size-bounded.
Performance
Medium-low confidence: autosave.rs (the tick write) clones the whole Project on the UI thread at every interval while the project is dirty. If layer data isn't Arc-shared, large projects could hitch and spike memory. See the inline comment.
Low confidence: the background write error is only picked up in tick, and nothing requests a repaint after a failed write. The notice may appear late on an idle window.
Quality
Low confidence: "Discard" deletes a recovery copy immediately, with no confirmation.
Low confidence: MAX_WAITING silently removes the oldest copies beyond 5. This is logged but not shown to the user.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. Mutex poisoning is handled, and the one expect is in the ui_shot example, which is acceptable.
The new interface text uses tl! and i18n::fmt.
The browser build sets recovery: None, so wasm is preserved.
The new code is gated on cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32")) and uses web_time.
I couldn't run cargo xtask ci here.

Review follow-ups for opengeos#896:
- The folder store's background thread wakes the interface after a
failed copy (RecoveryStore::set_wake), so the failure is told on an
idle window too, not at the next input.
- A failed copy is retried through a separate flag instead of forgetting
the last written revision, so saving after a failure still removes the
copy an earlier write left.

Thanks. The performance points are answered on the inline thread: the clone shares layer data, and a background failure now wakes the interface (d9c96f4). The two quality notes are deliberate:
Discard without a second confirmation. Discard is already an explicit choice in a dialog whose only purpose is that decision, beside Recover and Later. A second "are you sure?" would add a step to every recovery decision.
Copies beyond five dropped with a log line. Reaching that takes six crashes without recovering or discarding any copy. The dialog shows how many older copies are waiting, and the user guide states the limit ("Up to five are kept").
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
app.session.project.clone() runs on the UI thread every interval. For a project with many features or large embedded data, that deep clone can stall a frame, even though serialization is already moved to the worker. A cheaper snapshot would be an Arc/copy-on-write handle. If that is too invasive, a note that the clone is the accepted cost would help. Confidence: low-medium, since it depends on project size.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This is the same point as #896 (comment) and #896 (comment). It isn't a deep clone. A layer's features are Features(Arc<Vec<Feature>>), copy-on-write (crates/data/src/lib.rs:155), and raster pixels and embedded bytes are Arcs (crates/map/src/raster.rs:28,48). So the clone shares those buffers and copies only the project's own settings. Session::guarded takes the same clone for the undo snapshot of every edit (crates/engine/src/lib.rs:950).
As you suggest, 93b8a8a now says this in a comment at the clone site, so the cost is visible where it's paid.
I read the first ~1100 lines of the diff: main.rs, project.rs, autosave.rs (the FolderStore and the tick/recover/offer logic), lib.rs and the docs. I did not reach ribbon.rs, tests/autosave.rs or the remaining docs. I did not run the code or the tests. Overall the design is careful and no blocking problems turned up.
Bugs
None found. I checked the following and they hold up:
Write and clear ordering on the worker thread.
Retry after a failed write: a save still removes the earlier copy.
The Adopt rename after recovery.
Recovery is blocked while the open project has unsaved work.
The second-copy guard through Marker::locked.
The bounded read of the recovery file.
Security
No issues. Recovery copies strip layer secrets via recovery_text, and a regression test covers that. On Unix the folder is set to 0700. The recovery file read is size-bounded and the header read is capped at 64 KiB.
Minor (low confidence): permissions are set only on Unix and the result is ignored. On other platforms the folder uses the default ACLs for the app-data folder.
Performance
Project clone on the UI thread (low-medium confidence). tick calls app.session.project.clone() on the UI thread at every interval, which could stall a frame for large projects (inline comment posted).
Exit can block for up to 30 s (low confidence). FolderStore::flush waits up to 30 s during exit, which is bounded and acceptable.
Quality
expect in the example (low confidence). crates/ui-egui/examples/ui_shot.rs uses .expect("recovery folder"). Examples are likely outside the no-panic rule, but you could report the error and exit instead.
Duplicated waiting expression (nit). app.autosave.offer.as_ref().map(|_| more + 1).unwrap_or(0) appears twice in recover. A small helper, or is_some_and/map_or, would be tidier.
changed_since precision (nit). It compares whole seconds with >, so a file edited within the same second as the copy is not flagged.
Escape key (nit). Escape means "Later" for the recovery dialog even if another modal has focus.
AGENTS.md
User-visible strings use tl!/i18n::fmt, and the browser is handled with recovery: None and the cfg gates. FolderStore is gated off for wasm.
Docs and the roadmap are updated.
Please confirm cargo xtask ci passes, including hostile_params_never_panic with the new ui.autosave and ui.recover commands. I did not see them exercised in the part of the diff I read.

Review follow-ups for opengeos#896:
- The background thread keeps the write it skipped for a newer one until
that one is done; if it fails, the skipped copy is written instead,
before any later job, so the folder holds the newest copy that could be
written. The loop takes its writer as a parameter for the test.
- Say at the clone why it is cheap (Arc-shared layer data), and move the
repeated count of waiting copies into a helper.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Thanks. The clone is answered inline: it shares layer data, and the code now says so (93b8a8a). 93b8a8a also moves the repeated waiting expression into a small helper. The rest:
cargo xtask ci passes on every pushed head, including hostile_params_never_panic. That sweep covers engine commands. The ui.* commands have no shared sweep, so ui.autosave and ui.recover get their own in crates/ui-egui/tests/autosave.rs (recovery_commands_take_junk_parameters).
Folder permissions off Unix: the app-data folder (%LOCALAPPDATA%) is already private to the user by default on Windows, and the copy lives inside it.
The 30-second exit wait only happens while a copy is still being written. A copy left that way is offered at the next start, as flush documents.
expect in ui_shot: the example already panics on bad input (expect("json line"), expect("render state")). It's a developer tool, outside the no-panic rule for app code.
changed_since to the second: deliberate. A copy is only made after an edit that follows the last save, so a file written in the same second as the copy is the save the copy already follows.
Escape means Later: this dialog appears at start, before any other modal can be open, and Later loses nothing.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
end clears the copy on every clean exit, including when the project still has unsaved changes. The docs admit that quitting doesn't ask about unsaved changes (ui.quit just sets quit_requested). So one accidental Ctrl+Q or window close loses the work that autosave kept. Recovery then only helps after a crash.
Consider keeping the copy when app.session.dirty is true, and offering it at the next start, or adding a quit confirmation. At the least, drop the copy only when the project is clean. Confidence: medium. This may be a deliberate product choice, but it undercuts the feature.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Deliberate. This PR scopes recovery to crashes, which is the roadmap item, and the PR body lists it under "Choices worth checking". Keeping the copy across a clean quit makes the recovery dialog appear after ordinary quits. It also needs a final copy written at exit, not the last interval's, or the reopened work is up to five minutes stale.
The real gap is the one you name: the desktop app never asks before discarding unsaved changes, on quit or when another project replaces this one. That's now #906 (Save / Don't Save / Cancel before quitting or replacing the project), which I've claimed and will start once this PR merges, since both change the quit path. Keeping copies across a quit (hot exit) is listed there as an alternative.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
A panic inside the worker (for example in recovery_text or serialization of a hostile project) kills the autosave thread without reporting it. send then only logs "thread is gone", and the user sees no error while autosave silently stops. The Never-crash rule asks for a last-resort catch, as Session::run has. Wrapping each job in std::panic::catch_unwind(AssertUnwindSafe(..)) and routing to fail(..) would keep the thread alive and tell the user. Confidence: low-medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, fixed in 895321b. Each job on the autosave thread now runs under catch_unwind. A panic is reported like any failed copy, the interface is woken and shows the notice, and the thread goes on to the next job instead of dying. The desktop's panic hook still records it in crash.log, as it does for other caught panics.
The test a_panicking_copy_is_told_and_the_next_one_still_written queues a copy whose writer panics, a removal, and another copy. It checks that the failure is reported and that the later copy is still written.
I read the full diff and traced the autosave worker, the recovery flow and the run-marker locking. The design is careful: ordered background writes, an atomic single-file copy, a lock so a second app instance doesn't touch the first one's copy, secrets stripped, and hostile-input tests. I found no crash-level bugs. I could not build or run the tests here, so none of this was run.
Bugs
Clean exit discards unsaved work (medium confidence). autosave::end clears the recovery copy on every clean exit, even when the project is dirty. The docs say quitting doesn't ask about unsaved changes. An accidental Ctrl+Q or window close therefore deletes the copy autosave was keeping. Keeping the copy when session.dirty is true, or confirming on quit, would fix it. Inline comment posted.
Security
No issues found. Copies are written with layer secrets stripped, and recovery_text is not registered as a file this process wrote. The recovery folder is 0700 on Unix. Reads are size-bounded.
Performance
No issues found. The project is cloned cheaply because its data sits behind Arcs, and serializing and writing happen on a background thread. Skipped writes are coalesced.
Quality
Worker thread has no panic guard (low-medium confidence). A panic in serialization or writing kills the autosave thread silently. After that, send only logs "thread is gone" and the user is never told. Wrapping each job in catch_unwind and calling fail(..) would match the "Never crash" rule. Inline comment posted.
Lock fallback disables autosave (nit, low confidence). If try_lock returns an unsupported error, the marker is unlocked and autosave is off. That is safe. The docs could say that autosave is off on filesystems without file locking.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The new strings use tl! and i18n::fmt. The browser build sets recovery: None. The ui.* commands are in ui-egui. There are no unwrap or expect calls in non-test code; the expect in the ui_shot example matches that file's existing use. Docs and the roadmap are updated. The new engine test covers the secret-stripping behaviour.

Resolves the ROADMAP.md conflict with opengeos#886 (portable data paths and
Repair Data Source): keep this branch's "Autosave and crash recovery in
the browser" item and drop "Projects that survive a move", which opengeos#886
finished.
opengeos#886 makes saves write local paths relative to the project's folder.
Recovery copies don't go through saved_text: they keep the open project's
absolute paths, since a copy is opened from the recovery folder. Say so in
Project::recovery_text's documentation, and add tests/recovery_paths.rs
(using opengeos#886's fixture): a project saved with relative paths, reopened,
copied and opened from elsewhere still names its data by its full path.

On a clean exit this clears the recovery copy even when the project still has unsaved changes, and on_exit never asks about them. A user who quits (or hits Cmd+Q) by accident loses that work with no way back, which is the case autosave could cover. Consider keeping the copy when app.session.dirty is true and offering it at the next start. If you are removing it on purpose, the docs already say so, but this should be a deliberate choice. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Deliberate, as on the earlier thread: #896 (comment). This PR scopes recovery to crashes. Keeping copies across a quit would show the recovery dialog after ordinary quits, and needs a final copy written at exit.
The gap you describe, quitting without being asked about unsaved changes, is #906 (Save / Don't Save / Cancel before quitting or replacing the project). I've claimed it and will start once this PR merges.

.expect(...) in non-test code goes against the "never crash" rule in AGENTS.md. Examples may be more lenient, but a bad recovery path in a script panics here. Consider matching the result and printing an error. Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Left as is on purpose. ui_shot is a developer tool, and it already stops with expect on its other setup failures: an unreadable script line (expect("json line")) and no GPU device (expect("render state")). A recovery folder that can't be opened is the same kind of setup error, and the panic message names it. The never-crash rule covers the app's code, where input comes from users and files.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Folder permissions are restricted to 0700 on Unix only. On Windows the recovery copies hold full project data, including embedded bytes and absolute paths, and rely on the default ACLs of the app-data folder. This is probably fine because that folder is per-user, but it is worth noting. Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Right, and that's the intent. On Windows the copies live in %LOCALAPPDATA%\RustGIS\recovery, under the user's profile, whose default ACL grants access to that user (plus SYSTEM and Administrators), not to other users. That's the same protection prefs.json and the crash log rely on in the settings folder. Unix needs the explicit 0700 because a umask of 0002 or 0022 would otherwise leave the folder readable by others.
This PR adds desktop autosave and crash recovery. The design is solid and the tests are thorough. I found no blocking defects, only a few concerns. I reviewed from the diff and surrounding source only. I did not build the code or run any tests.
Bugs
Clean exit discards unsaved work (medium).autosave::end clears the recovery copy even when the project is still dirty, and on_exit never asks about unsaved changes. An accidental quit or Cmd+Q loses that work, which is the case autosave could cover. The docs state this behaviour, so it may be deliberate. Inline comment posted.
Failed writes retry forever (low). If a write fails every time (for example a project too large), it is retried at each interval. The error is told only once, so this is harmless but wasteful. No comment posted.
Security
Recovery folder permissions (low). The folder is set to 0700 on Unix only. On Windows the copies hold full project data and rely on the default ACLs of the per-user app-data folder. Inline comment posted.
Layer secrets are stripped from recovery copies and covered by a regression test. The recovery file is read with a size cap, and header and project parsing are bounded.
Performance
No concerns. The project is cloned cheaply because its data is Arc-shared, and serialising and writing happen on a background thread. A write queued behind a newer one is skipped, but kept as a fallback in case the newer one fails.
flush can block exit for up to 30 seconds. This only happens if a write is stuck.
Quality
.expect() in ui_shot.rs (low).crates/ui-egui/examples/ui_shot.rs calls .expect("recovery folder"), which goes against the "never crash" rule even in an example. Inline comment posted.
Otherwise the code reads well and follows the surrounding style. The tests cover the retry, the skipped-write fallback, damaged copies, junk parameters and the second-copy lock.
AGENTS.md
Interface text. User-visible strings use tl! and i18n::fmt, as required. The tooltip in autosave_menu is a bare &str passed to big_menu, which I assume translates it (not verified).
Wasm. The browser sets recovery: None. FolderStore is gated off wasm32, and web_time is used.
Never crash. The only expect outside tests is the ui_shot.rs one above.
Junk-parameter test.recovery_commands_take_junk_parameters covers the new ui.* commands.
Other. Docs, ROADMAP and the parity file are updated. No new dependencies or assets.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base f3aaf35 to PR head f76627b).
Failed writes retry each interval: deliberate. A retry waits for the interval, not every frame, and the failure is reported once. A project that shrank back under the size limit, or a disk with space again, then gets its copy without any action from the user.
Windows permissions and ui_shot's expect: answered inline.
Tooltip translation:big() translates its description (tl!(desc), crates/ui-egui/src/widgets.rs:127), so autosave_menu's tooltip is translated as the other ribbon tooltips are.
Clean exit discards unsaved work: deliberate in this PR, which scopes recovery to crashes. The underlying gap, no "Save changes?" prompt before quitting or replacing the project, is now [Feature]: Ask to save unsaved changes before quitting or replacing the project #906, which I'll take on after this PR merges. Details on the inline thread.
Worker panic guard: fixed in 895321b. Each job runs under catch_unwind, and a panic is reported as a failed copy while the thread keeps going.
Lock fallback: the user guide now says autosave is off where the settings folder can't lock files (895321b).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
When the marker is held by another copy, can't be created, or can't be locked, autosave is silently disabled: no_autosave is only set inside this branch, so the user gets no "Autosave is off" notice (the latest commit says it should say so). Consider setting no_autosave with a reason (e.g. "another copy of RustGIS is running") in the else case. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed. My earlier reply called this intended, but a run without autosave should say so, whatever the reason. Fixed in c1ba9d0. running::start now returns why there's no marker instead of None: another copy holds it, or the settings folder can't be written. The app shows "Autosave is off: …" for that, and for a marker it couldn't lock ("the settings folder can't lock files…"). That's the same notice as for a recovery folder that doesn't open.
The marker test now checks that a second copy gets the "another copy of RustGIS is running" reason, and the user guide says the second copy says so as it starts.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
If write panics, the skipped copy taken at skipped.take() inside the closure is lost, so the "newest copy that could be written" fallback doesn't apply to panics. Minor (panics should not occur), but you could take skipped outside the catch_unwind closure. Also, the doc comment above (line ~556) runs past the line width. Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Right, fixed in c1ba9d0, plus the comment width. Taking skipped outside the closure wouldn't help on its own, because the panic would still leave before the fallback runs. So the writer itself is now guarded: a write that panics comes back as an ordinary failed write ("writing the copy failed unexpectedly"), and the skipped copy is written instead. The per-job guard stays for the other jobs.
a_panicking_copy_is_told_and_the_next_one_still_written now also queues an older copy and then one that panics, and checks that the older one is written and the failure reported.
I read the first 600 lines of the diff and the changed autosave.rs through line 659. I did not read the rest of autosave.rs, the lib.rs and ribbon.rs wiring, the UI tests (crates/ui-egui/tests/autosave.rs) or the docs. Nothing was compiled or run. The reviewed code is mostly solid.
Bugs
Silent no-autosave when the marker isn't locked (medium confidence, apps/rustgis/src/main.rs:350). If another copy holds the run marker, or the marker can't be created or locked, autosave is off and the user isn't told. no_autosave is only set inside the locked branch, so the "Autosave is off" notice never appears in those cases.
Skipped copy lost on panic (low confidence, crates/ui-egui/src/autosave.rs:586). skipped.take() runs inside the catch_unwind closure. If write panics, the skipped copy is dropped and the fallback to the newest writable copy doesn't happen.
Security
No issues found. recovery_text strips layer secrets from addresses, and a test covers it. The recovery folder is set to 0700 on Unix, and the copy size is capped.
Performance
No issues found. Writes happen on a background thread, cloning the project is cheap because the data is shared, and earlier queued writes are skipped when a newer one is waiting.
Quality
A doc comment in autosave.rs around line 556 runs well past the line width. This is a nit.
AGENTS.md
No violations found in the code I read. It has no unwrap outside tests (the expect in ui_shot.rs is in an example), and interface text uses tl! and i18n::fmt. The web build sets recovery: None, so wasm is unaffected.
I didn't check cargo xtask ci, the layering rule, or the ATTRIBUTION.md rule.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base f3aaf35 to PR head 895321b).
Review follow-ups for opengeos#896:
- running::start returns why there is no run marker (another copy holds
it, or the settings folder can't be written), and the app shows
"Autosave is off: ..." for that and for a marker it couldn't lock, as it
does when the recovery folder doesn't open.
- A copy whose writing panics comes back as a failed write, so the copy
skipped for it is written instead.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Thanks. Both findings and the comment-width nit are fixed in c1ba9d0; details on the inline threads. cargo xtask ci, which includes the layer check, passes on every pushed head. This change adds no asset files, so ATTRIBUTION.md is untouched.

Low confidence: flush blocks the UI thread for up to FLUSH_WAIT (30 s) from on_exit. If the folder is on a stalled network or FUSE mount, the window stays frozen and then looks hung at quit. A shorter bound (a few seconds) would still cover a normal write. The cost of timing out is only that the copy is offered at the next start, which the comment above already accepts.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Kept at 30 s on purpose. The wait only happens while a copy is still being written when the app quits. The recovery folder is the local app-data folder (%LOCALAPPDATA%, ~/.local/share, ~/Library/Application Support), not a roaming or synced one, so a stalled mount there is unusual. A normal quit doesn't wait at all.
What the bound has to cover is a large copy. Serializing and writing a project near the 512 MiB limit can take several seconds on an ordinary disk. If the wait gives up first, the copy survives and the next start shows "Recover unsaved work?" after a clean quit, which is misleading. Thirty seconds favours a correct quit in the common case over a faster one on a stalled folder.
I read the diff up to line 1548 of 1949. I did not read the rest of crates/ui-egui/tests/autosave.rs or the doc changes after it. I could not build or run anything.
Bugs
No correctness bugs found in the autosave write, retry, clear and recover paths. I traced these paths:
The background worker's skipped-write handling.
Panic recovery.
The written/failed bookkeeping.
Adopting a recovered copy.
The run-marker lock that gates autosave.
Security
No issues. Recovery copies go through strip_addresses, so layer tokens are not written. The recovery folder is set to 0700 on Unix. Reads are bounded by MAX_BYTES + MAX_HEADER.
Performance
Low confidence: FolderStore::flush can block the UI thread for up to 30 s on exit if the folder is stalled (a network or FUSE mount). I left an inline comment suggesting a shorter bound.
Quality
The unwrap/expect calls I saw are in tests or the ui_shot example (FolderStore::open(...).expect("recovery folder")), so they are acceptable. Very low confidence nit.
Tests cover the retry, panic, skipped-copy, token-stripping and absolute-path cases.
AGENTS.md
User-visible strings go through tl!/i18n::fmt, and rustgis-web sets recovery: None.
The wasm gating of FolderStore is correct.
The layering is respected: the store trait sits in L6, and the engine only gains recovery_text.
The ribbon tooltip in ribbon.rs is a plain &str passed to big_menu. I assumed big_menu translates it, as the guidelines say ribbon widgets do, but did not check.
Change size

Thanks. The exit wait is answered inline. On the tooltip: big() translates its description (tl!(desc), crates/ui-egui/src/widgets.rs:127), so the Autosave tooltip is translated as the other ribbon tooltips are.

Review follow-ups for opengeos#896:
- The autosave thread holds back one copy at a time: with one held, the
current write is done (falling back to the held copy) before the next
queued job is looked at, so a viable older copy is never dropped when
newer ones can't be written.
- The run marker is written over its old content and then cut to length,
instead of emptied first: a write that fails leaves a set marker set,
so the next launch still notices an unclean exit.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
@coderabbitai Thanks. The outside-diff finding (three queued writes, autosave.rs:582) is fixed in a5c08b2 as you proposed. Only one write is held back at a time: with one held, the current write is done, falling back to the held one if it fails, before the next queued job is looked at. So a viable older copy is never dropped.
a_skipped_copy_stands_in_for_a_newer_one_that_failed now also queues an older copy and two newer ones that can't be written, and checks the older one is kept. That case fails on the previous code. The marker-write finding is answered inline.

Nit (low confidence, performance): for a copy near the 512 MiB limit, String::from_utf8(bytes) followed by project.to_string() holds the whole file plus a second full copy of the project text at once, then project.openText takes more. Peak memory is roughly twice the copy, on the UI thread while the user waits. Dropping the header in place avoids the second allocation:
Suggested change
let text = String::from_utf8(bytes).map_err(|_| "the recovery copy isn't text".to_string())?;
letmuttext = String::from_utf8(bytes).map_err(|_| "the recovery copy isn't text".to_string())?;
let header = text.find('\n').ok_or("the recovery copy is incomplete")?;

Low-confidence concern: flush runs from on_exit on the UI thread and can block for up to 30 s (FLUSH_WAIT). If a large project is mid-serialize, the window stays frozen with no feedback on a clean quit. The timeout is bounded, so this is not a hang, but consider a shorter wait or skipping the wait once Clear is queued. The next start offers the copy in that case anyway, which is the documented behaviour.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Taken in part, in 8597b85: a copy queued and then cleared at once (a save, or the exit's Clear) is now skipped rather than written and deleted, so a quit waits only for a write that had already started. That one can't be cut short, so the bound stays. If the wait gives up, a clean quit leaves a copy that the next start offers back as if it had crashed. A copy whose recovery couldn't be moved into place is now also removed by the next clear or newer copy (CodeRabbit's outside-diff note).

Nit (low confidence): .display().to_string() is lossy for non-UTF-8 paths, which are legal on Unix. Such a path is stored with replacement characters, so Recover then sets session.path to a file that doesn't exist, and Save writes somewhere else. It's rare, but to_str() with a None fallback (treat the project as untitled) would be safer than a silently wrong path.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, fixed in 8597b85. about() now keeps the path only if it's valid Unicode (to_str()). A file name that isn't is described as untitled, so after Recover, Save asks where to write instead of writing to a lossy spelling of the name.
I found no blocking bugs. The design is careful: ordered background writes, atomic single-file copies, panic guards, and a lock on the run marker. It follows the "never crash" rules in AGENTS.md: no unwrap outside tests, bounded reads, and a wasm-safe cfg split. I read the changed Rust files in full. I did not build or run anything, because I had no shell.
Bugs
None found. I traced the write-skipping logic in work_with: the held skipped copy is always consumed by the next Write, so it cannot be written again after a Clear. I also traced the adopt_pending ordering against Clear, the failed retry path, and recover() replacing the open project. All look correct.
Low confidence (inline): about() stores the project path with display().to_string(), which is lossy for non-UTF-8 Unix paths. Recover could then point Save at the wrong file.
Security
No issues. The recovery folder is 0o700 on Unix, layer secrets are stripped by recovery_text, and the copy read is bounded by MAX_BYTES + MAX_HEADER.
The one weak spot is that the 0o700set_permissions result is ignored. If it fails, the copies rely on the umask or the parent folder's permissions.
Performance
Low confidence (inline): read_pending holds about twice the copy's size in memory (the bytes, then project.to_string()) for a copy near 512 MiB.
Low confidence (inline): a clean quit can block the UI thread for up to 30 s in flush while a large copy is written.
Quality
The tests carry (#896 review) markers. They describe review history, not behaviour, so they will age badly.
ribbon.rs has let tip = "…" as a raw string, while other ribbon tooltips use the same pattern, so this matches the surrounding code.
AGENTS.md
Layering is respected: the RecoveryStore trait sits in L6 and the folder store is gated off wasm.
UI strings go through tl! and i18n::fmt.
No new dependencies, so there are no licence or notices changes.
The ui_shot support and the docs updates are present.
Confidence is moderate, since I could not run cargo xtask ci.

Preserve non-secret COG fragments during recovery serialization.
recovery_text sends reachable HTTP/HTTPS layer addresses through strip_addresses. The ordinary web-address branch removes everything after #, so a valid COG band/look fragment is lost from the recovery copy. The recovered project can reopen the COG with its configured look reset.
Preserve recognized COG fragments while continuing to remove credentials and unrecognized secret fragments.

Restore the pending entry when adoption fails.
When Job::Adopt cannot rename the offered copy to LIVE, take_offered has already removed that copy from waiting. The worker reports the error but does not restore the entry. A later save or clean exit targets only LIVE, so the pending file remains on disk but is untracked until the next launch. Startup then offers the stale snapshot again.
Keep the entry in waiting until adoption succeeds, or reinsert it when the rename fails.

…doomed copies
Review follow-ups for opengeos#896:
- read_pending drops the description line in place, so a copy near the
size limit isn't held twice.
- A project file name that isn't Unicode is described as untitled rather
than by a lossy spelling, so Save after Recover asks where to write.
- A failure to make the recovery folder private is logged.
- A copy queued and cleared at once (a save, the exit) isn't written, so
quitting waits only for a write already under way.
- A recovered copy that couldn't become this run's copy is removed by the
next clear or newer copy instead of being offered again after a save.
- Test comments describe behaviour, not review history.

Thanks. 8597b85 takes the memory, non-UTF-8 path and permissions points: a failed 0o700 is now logged. It also drops the "(#896 review)" markers from the test comments, which now describe only the behaviour. The exit wait is answered inline. cargo xtask ci passes on every pushed head.
Thanks for the approval. On the two outside-diff notes from the review of a5c08b2:
A recovered copy whose move into place fails: fixed in 8597b85. The background thread remembers it and removes it at the next Clear (a save, a clean exit) or after the next copy is written. Until then a crash still leaves it to be offered, because it's then the only copy on disk. The new test a_copy_that_could_not_be_adopted_is_cleared_and_a_doomed_write_skipped blocks the rename and checks that the following clear removes it.
COG band/look fragments: left as is in this PR. recovery_text strips addresses with the same saved_address a normal save uses. For a plain http(s) COG address that already drops the fragment when a project is saved to a file, so a recovery copy matches a save exactly. Keeping recognised look fragments is a change to how saves work, better made for both in its own PR.

Minor: .expect("recovery folder") panics on a bad path. AGENTS.md bans expect in non-test code. Examples are borderline, and the rest of this file may already allow it. Otherwise print the error and exit. Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Answered on #896 (comment): ui_shot is a developer tool that already stops with expect on its other setup failures (expect("json line"), expect("render state")), so this follows the file's existing style. The never-crash rule covers the app's own code. Leaving it as is.
I read the Rust changes: main.rs run marker and wiring, autosave.rs lines 196–760 (tick, recover, offer dialog, FolderStore and its worker), project.rs, web.rs, and the new tests. I did not read the top of autosave.rs, its tests (crates/ui-egui/tests/autosave.rs, and the test module in autosave.rs past line 760), or the lib.rs and ribbon.rs wiring.
Bugs
None found. I checked these cases:
The ordering of writes, clears and adopts on the background thread.
The skipped-write fallback when a newer write fails.
Rename and adopt failure handling.
The marker rewrite order (write, then truncate), so a failed write never reads as a clean exit.
The recover and discard flow when the open project has unsaved changes.
Security
No issues. Recovery copies strip layer secrets via recovery_text, and the folder is set to 0700 on Unix. Reads are bounded by MAX_BYTES + MAX_HEADER.
Performance
No issues. The project is cloned cheaply (its data is Arc-shared), and serializing and writing happen off the interface thread. Writes are rate-limited and coalesced.
Quality
crates/ui-egui/examples/ui_shot.rs:136: .expect("recovery folder") panics on a bad path. This is a dev-only example, so low severity. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
Interface text uses tl! and i18n::fmt. The web build sets recovery: None, so wasm is unaffected. The docs and roadmap are updated.
Not checked, because I couldn't run anything: whether cargo xtask ci passes, and whether ATTRIBUTION.md or THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt need updating (I saw no new dependencies in the files I read).
Change size
The whole PR against main (merge base 497ee1a to PR head 8597b85).
Thanks. On the two items you couldn't check: cargo xtask ci passes on every pushed head, including 8597b85 and its merge of main, and the PR adds no dependency, so there's nothing for ATTRIBUTION.md or THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt. The ui_shot point is answered inline.

Summary
The desktop app now keeps a recovery copy of unsaved work and offers it back after a crash, a kill or a power cut. Until now, everything since the last save was lost. A project that was never saved was lost entirely: the app noticed the unclean exit, but only to open the World Atlas instead of the start-up project.
Autosave
ui.autosave={"minutes": N}does the same (0is off).recovery/in the app-data folder (%LOCALAPPDATA%\RustGIS,~/.local/share/rustgis, …), not beside the project. That covers never-saved projects and keeps it out of synced and versioned folders. On Unix the folder is this user's only.Recovery
