Summary

A follow-up to #917 (part of #858). The Content tab showed the class's label field as a visible list. That list needed one fix after another: a filter that could hide the chosen field, scrolling the chosen field into view, and a filter per class. Review comments on #917 pointed at two more (an empty list with no hint, and the scroll after clearing the filter).

A box always shows the class's field, so this replaces the list with one, like the Font box in the Symbol tab:

  • The box shows the class's field, or "{name} (not in the layer)" when a style, a service or a project leaves the class on a field the layer doesn't have.
  • Its list has a "Search fields" box, as the Font list has, and says "No fields match" when the search finds nothing.
  • Field and SQL Query stay together on the Content tab, with no sub-tabs.

This removes the list's scroll handling and its per-class filter state, so the code is shorter than before.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci: passed.
  • inputs_are_reachable_by_their_row_labels picks the field from the Field box again.
  • New the_field_box_searches_and_names_a_missing_field:
    • a class on a field the layer lacks is named as such;
    • a search narrows the list, and a field picked from it is applied;
    • a search with no match says so.
  • Manual checks:
    • searching and picking a field;
    • switching classes shows each class's field;
    • Ctrl+Z undoes a field change in one step.

Related issue

Part of #858.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • The Content tab now offers a searchable combo box for choosing a label field. Search is case-insensitive, with distinct messages for an empty layer and no matches.
    • The selected field is shown, including when it is missing from the layer; an empty selection displays “.” Selecting a field clears the search, even if it is already selected.
    • Font picker searches clear after selecting a font or label font.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the cartography guide to describe searching for label fields.

The Content tab's field list kept needing fixes (a filter that hid the chosen field, scrolling to it, a filter per class). A box always shows the class's field: it now searches its list as the Font box does, says when nothing matches, and names a field the layer no longer has. Refs opengeos#858.

Walkthrough

The Labeling pane replaces its scrollable field list with a searchable combo box. The control displays the current field or indicates when it is missing, filters field names without regard to case, and reports when no fields match. The font picker also uses shared search behavior.

Code review

This PR replaces the label-field scrolling list in the Labeling pane's Content tab with a searchable ComboBox, like the font box. I read the whole diff and checked Dataset::field_index (case-insensitive) and how the existing font search stores its text. I found one real concern. I couldn't build or run anything, so the tests are unrun.

Bugs

  • Stale search text (inline comment, medium confidence). The search string is kept in egui temp data keyed only by layer id (label_pane_field_search). It is never cleared when the popup closes or a field is picked. Reopening the Field box shows the list still filtered by the old text, and the search also carries over between classes of the same layer. Clear it on pick or close.

Security

  • Nothing found. The change is UI-only and takes no new external input.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. The list is lowercased and filtered on each frame while the popup is open, which is fine for typical field counts.

Quality

  • The shown / field_index check correctly names a field the layer lacks as "… (not in the layer)". The highlight in the list uses eq_ignore_ascii_case, consistent with field_index.
  • The new Field label and the "(not in the layer)" text use tl! / i18n::fmt, as AGENTS.md asks.
  • The tests are updated to match: the combobox accessibility labels, the search narrowing the list, the "No fields match" message, and the missing-field display. The old per-class filter test was removed, which fits since that filter no longer exists.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap / expect or other forbidden constructs in the non-test changes.
  • Docs in cartography.md were updated.
  • cargo xtask ci was not run (I can't run it), so it is unconfirmed here.

The search typed in the Field or Font box was kept after a pick, so the list reopened filtered. A pick now clears it, and a test reopens the box on the whole list; closing without a pick keeps the search. Refs opengeos#858.
A layer without fields showed an empty name as missing and said no field matched; its box now shows <None> and its list says the layer has no fields. The Field and Font boxes share one search helper, so they search and end a search alike. Refs opengeos#858.

Code review

The PR replaces the always-open Field list in the Labeling pane's Content tab with a combo box like the Font one. It adds a shared list_search and end_search, and the box names a field the layer lacks. I read the diff and checked Dataset::field_index and the Id::unique helper in the repo. I did not build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

  • None found. field_index and the row highlight both compare case-insensitively, so they agree. The empty-layer and no-match states are handled separately.

Security

  • None. There is no new input handling beyond the existing labels.field command.

Performance

  • None. The field list is filtered per frame only while the popup is open.

Quality

AGENTS.md

  • Interface text: new strings use tl! and i18n::fmt, as required.
  • No panics: none introduced. The tests use unwrap, which is allowed there.
  • Docs and tests: the user guide is updated, and tests cover search, pick-ends-search, a missing field, and a layer without fields.
  • Layering and wasm: no concerns. The change is egui-only.

Code review

This PR replaces the Labeling pane's scrolling field list with a "Field" combo box. The box has a search, says when the field is missing from the layer, and shares its search helpers with the Font box. I found no bugs. I read the diff and the surrounding labelpane.rs helpers (layer_key, Dataset::field_index).

Bugs

  • None found. The "(not in the layer)" check and the highlighted row both ignore case, matching Dataset::field_index. The no-fields and no-match messages are distinct. end_search clears the search on each pick, for the Field and Font boxes alike.

Security

  • None. The change is UI only and takes no new input from files or commands.

Performance

  • None. The list is filtered once per frame, and only while the popup is open.

Quality

  • Low confidence, nit: the Field search is now kept per layer (layer_key(...)), not per class as before. The field list is the same for every class, so this is reasonable. The old each_class_has_its_own_field_filter test is removed because that behaviour is gone. Closing the popup without picking keeps the typed search for the next open. The Font box already behaves this way, so the two are consistent.
  • The new tests cover search narrowing, the search clearing after a pick, a missing field, and a layer with no fields. The accessibility-label test now includes "Field".

AGENTS.md

  • User-visible strings use tl! or i18n::fmt: "Search fields", "This layer has no fields.", "No fields match", "" and "(not in the layer)". The catalogs don't need updating.
  • There is no unwrap, expect, panic! or indexing in the non-test code, and the docs are updated.
  • I couldn't run cargo xtask ci, so the usual gates (fmt, clippy, tests, layers) are unverified here.

Nit: end_search only runs when the pick changes the field (&& !on). Clicking the already-selected entry closes the combo but keeps the search text, so the list reopens filtered. The font list has the same pattern. If "a pick ends the search" is meant to hold for any click, call end_search outside the !on check. Low confidence; it may be intended.

Taken: any click on an entry now ends the search, the chosen one too, since the box closes on it; only a different entry runs the command. Same in the Font box.

Code review

The PR replaces the always-visible, scrolling field list in the Labeling pane's Content tab with a searchable ComboBox, in the same style as the Font box. I found no bugs and no AGENTS.md violations. I read the diff and the surrounding code but did not build or run the tests.

Bugs

  • None found. Matching is case-insensitive throughout: field_index, the on check and the search filter all agree. An empty layer, no match and a field the layer lacks each get their own message.

Security

  • Nothing to raise. The change is UI-only and passes the field name to the existing labels.field command.

Performance

  • Nothing to raise. The filter runs only while the combo is open.

Quality

  • Minor (low confidence): end_search runs only when the pick changes the field (&& !on). Clicking the already-selected entry closes the combo but keeps the search text, so the list reopens filtered. The font list behaves the same way. See the inline comment.
  • Good: list_search and end_search are shared by the Field and Font boxes, and the dead scroll-into-view code and FIELD_ROWS are removed.
  • Good: search ids now come from layer_key(...).with(...) instead of Id::unique, so they stay stable.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe was added.
  • New user-visible strings go through tl! and i18n::fmt.
  • New tests cover search, a missing field, a layer with no fields and the accessibility labels. The user guide is updated.
  • No new assets or dependencies, and the code is egui-only, so layering and wasm are unaffected.

Layer ids are per map, so a search keyed by the id alone could come back on another map's layer; both searches now use layer_key, as the pane's other per-layer state does. Picking the entry already chosen closes the box too, so it now ends the search as well; only another entry runs the command. Refs opengeos#858.

Code review

This PR replaces the always-open Field list in the Labeling pane's Content tab with a combo box, as the Font box already is. It also adds a search shared with the Font box. I read the diff and the surrounding code. I found no bugs or security issues, only a few minor points. I didn't build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

  • None found. The on highlight (eq_ignore_ascii_case) matches Dataset::field_index, which is also case-insensitive, so the "not in the layer" text and the selected row agree. (high confidence)

Security

  • None. The change only touches egui UI code and docs. It uses no unwrap or unsafe, and the field names it passes to the labels.field command come from the layer's own field list.

Performance

  • The field list has no row cap, unlike the font list's MAX_FONTS_SHOWN. A layer with thousands of fields would build every row each frame while the popup is open. This is unlikely in practice and doesn't block the PR. (low confidence)

Quality

  • Search kept per layer, not per class. search_id is now layer_key(...).with(...). The old filter was kept per class ([Feature]: One place per label setting: the ribbon edits the chosen class, the Labeling pane by topic #858) so that one class's text couldn't hide another class's field. The popup now shows its own search box, and a pick or a new popup resets it, so the old failure is largely gone. A search typed in one class and abandoned with Esc still shows when you open another class's list. This looks acceptable, and it matches the latest commit's "kept per layer". It is worth a line in the PR description. (medium-low confidence)
  • Misleading test messages in the_field_box_searches_and_names_a_missing_field.
    • The "the pick ended the search" assertion after the first search(&mut h, "pop") actually checks that the typed text is present, not that a pick ended anything.
    • The same message is reused at the end for "zzz".
    • The comment "Picking the chosen field again ends a search too; the pick before had ended the first" reads confusingly. Reword these messages, for example "the typed search is shown".
  • Test coverage. The new tests cover searching, picking, the missing field and the layer with no fields. They don't cover Esc-closing the popup with a kept search. The kept-search behaviour is deliberate, so a small test would pin it down. (low confidence)

AGENTS.md

  • Interface text uses tl! and i18n::fmt, and the TSV catalogs need no update. The Field label is now the combo box's label, set through labelled_by for accessibility.
  • No new assets or dependencies, and nothing wasm-specific. The docs in cartography.md were updated to match.
  • The PR doesn't state whether cargo xtask ci was run. Please confirm.

Skip labels.style when “Label font” is already selected.
