Services: ask a WFS, OGC API or ArcGIS feature layer for an area only (#819) - #924
Fixes#819, as agreed there with @deniial00: a feature layer still comes whole by default, as in QGIS, ArcGIS Pro and GDAL, and an area can be asked for instead.
Today service.add accepts bbox but uses it only for WCS coverages, so a feature layer is always downloaded whole. Brazil's municipalities from IBGE's WFS are 467 MB and take 75 s, past the 60 s that service.add waits. With a box around one state they are 21 MB and take 5 s.
rustgis_data::ogc::features_in_area(url, area), new. It adds a longitude/latitude box to an Offer::Features address, in each service's own terms:
WFS 1.1 and 2.0:BBOX=w,s,e,n,urn:ogc:def:crs:OGC:1.3:CRS84 when the request's SRSNAME is CRS84 (the type offers it). Otherwise BBOX=s,w,n,e,urn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::4326, latitude first, as that URN fixes; a bare EPSG:4326 is read either way by different servers.
OGC API Features:bbox=w,s,e,n. The server's next links keep it.
It returns None when the request can't carry the box (see Limits).
service.add (crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs):
with "bbox" ([west, south, east, north] or "view"), it asks a feature layer for that area;
with no bbox, or "full", it asks for the whole layer, as before;
the result gives the area asked for;
it zooms to a box given, not to the whole layer's bounds (which would show the whole country to fill one state), and leaves the view as it is for "view";
when a whole layer runs past the 60 s, the error now also suggests "bbox".
The From Service dialog: a new Only the map's area checkbox, off by default, shown when the list has feature layers. With it ticked, a feature layer's address gets the view's box before the background download (as From URL… does).
Docs:docs/user-guide/data-formats.md, the services section.
One helper, worked from the address. The Offer::Features address already says what it is (SERVICE=WFS&VERSION=…&SRSNAME=…, an ArcGIS …/query, or OGC API …/items), so Offer and ServiceLayer don't change. The command and the dialog share the helper.
Features that cross the box come whole, as the services return them: not clipped.
An address that already filters is left as it is: one carrying bbox, bbox-crs (a box in another system), filter, CQL_FILTER, FEATUREID, RESOURCEID or geometry.
The limits stay as they are: 50,000 features for a WFS request, 100,000 or a minute for paged reads, 512 MB a download. With a box they are reached far less often.
WFS 1.0 is asked for the whole layer. Its BBOX is read in the feature type's own coordinate system, and WFS 1.0 has no way to name another; that system isn't always longitude/latitude. This differs from the proposal in [Feature]: Feature services: ask for the map's area, not the whole layer (WFS, OGC API Features, ArcGIS) #819, which had BBOX=w,s,e,n for 1.0. Servers answer GetCapabilities in their newest version, so this only affects servers that speak 1.0 alone.
An area across the antimeridian is asked for the whole layer, as catalog.search does.
When the area can't be asked for, a note says so: "… so the whole layer is asked for".
Moving the map doesn't ask for more features. The layer holds the area it was added for.
No translations: the two new dialog strings and the note are left for the i18n pass.
IBGE's municipalities still come with their axes swapped, as they did whole before this PR. This is not from this PR. IBGE's GeoServer answers SRSNAME=EPSG:4326 (and urn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::4326) with GeoJSON coordinates longitude first, but labels them urn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::4326. fix_axes (Map and feature services: WMS, WMTS, WFS, OGC API Features, ArcGIS REST #120) then reads them as latitude first and turns them round. Asked for SRSNAME=urn:ogc:def:crs:OGC:1.3:CRS84, which the type doesn't list, the same server returns the same 472 features labelled CRS84, and they aren't turned. I'll open that as its own issue, since it changes what every WFS is asked for.
Testing
rustgis-data: new features_asked_for_over_an_area, on addresses parsed from capabilities. It covers:
WFS 2.0 with CRS84;
WFS 1.1 latitude first;
WFS 1.0 (None);
ArcGIS, including an arcgis_page_url page that keeps the envelope;
OGC API, with a fragment and a small number written out (0.0000001, not 1e-7);
the antimeridian, a box off the globe, an address that already filters (bbox, CQL_FILTER) and a plain file (None).
rustgis-engine: new service_features_asked_for_over_an_area, against a local server that logs each request's BBOX. It covers:
a box (latitude first in the URN);
"view";
no bbox and "full" (no BBOX);
the antimeridian and WFS 1.0 (whole, with their notes);
the view going to the box given.
cargo xtask ci on Windows: cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo test --workspace, 2,290 tests, with RUSTGIS_LANGUAGE=en, after a rebase on main (bce9695, with ArcGIS: sign in to ArcGIS Online and Enterprise portals with OAuth #915's ArcGIS sign-in: the fetcher adds its token to each request, so the box's query parameters don't touch it). The define_projection UI tests look for English labels and fail in a Portuguese locale, as they do on main.
Feature layers from WFS, OGC API Features, and ArcGIS can now be requested for a specific map area or longitude/latitude bounding box.
“Only the map’s area” is available when adding eligible feature layers. Requests for a specified box zoom to those bounds; “view” requests preserve the current view, and whole-layer requests frame the layer.
Service documentation now explains area-based requests and expected behavior.
Notes
Unsupported requests, including WFS 1.0 and antimeridian-crossing bounds, fall back to whole-layer requests with a notice. Features are returned whole, not clipped to the requested area.
If a whole-layer request times out, users are advised to try an area request.
…opengeos#819)
service.add takes "bbox" ([west, south, east, north] or "view") for feature
layers too, and the From Service dialog gets "Only the map's area" (off by
default). The whole layer stays the default. The box goes into each
service's request: WFS 1.1/2.0 BBOX (CRS84, else urn EPSG::4326 latitude
first), OGC API bbox, ArcGIS envelope. WFS 1.0 and areas across the
antimeridian are asked whole, with a note. A whole layer past the 60 s wait
suggests "bbox".

The description is detailed and covers the change, design choices, limits, testing, and related issue. It does not use the template's explicit Related issue heading, but it identifies issue #819 in the Summary, so the required information is present.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed areas support #819. crates/data/src/ogc.rs adds features_in_area and its tests. crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs adds the feature-layer bbox handling, the area result field, and the zoom rules. crates/engine/src/tests.rs adds the matching engine test and view_lonlat. crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs adds ServiceBrowse.area. dialogs.rs adds the checkbox. serviceui.rs passes the area through add_layer and add_layer_from. connectiontree.rs changes one argument to None to match the new signature. data-formats.md documents the behavior. The follow-up commit that stops an unknown view from blocking map layers concerns the same dialog path. The #819 exclusions are respected: no attribute filters (CQL, filter, where), no Web Data catalog changes, no refresh for the current view, and no change to service.import or the Connections tree behavior. The IBGE axis-order issue is not changed in fix_axes. This result relies on the whole-PR summary and PR description. The diff hunks were not read directly.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#819] Default area not met. The issue text supplied for this review requires the map's view as the default area for feature layers, with "full" for the whole layer. At the reviewed head, service.add treats an absent or null bbox, or "full", as a whole-layer request (crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs). The PR description states that the whole layer stays the default. The From Service "Only the map's area" checkbox is off by default, so the dialog also requests the whole layer unless the user ticks it. The PR cites agreement with @deniial00 in #819. The supplied issue text does not record that agreement, so it does not change the requirement.
[#819] WFS 1.0 not met. The issue Proposal gives WFS 1.0 as BBOX=w,s,e,n. features_in_area returns None for WFS 1.0 (crates/data/src/ogc.rs), so WFS 1.0 feature layers are requested whole. The stated reason (the 1.0 BBOX uses the feature type's coordinate system) does not change the issue requirement.
[#819] Dialog default not met. The issue requires the dialog to pass the view for feature layers, as it does for coverages. In the PR, the dialog passes the view only when the checkbox is ticked.
[#819] Met: explicit area requests for WFS 1.1/2.0 (CRS84 longitude-first when offered, otherwise latitude-first EPSG:4326 URN), OGC API Features (bbox=w,s,e,n, kept on next links), and ArcGIS (geometry envelope, kept on paged queries). The helper is shared by service.add and the dialog. The antimeridian fallback, the limits, the box-based zoom, and the view-preserving "view" behavior are implemented. Automated tests cover these cases.
This result relies on the whole-PR summary, the PR description, and the raw summary. No additional repository inspection was needed to decide these points.
Resolution
In service.add, make the map view the default area for feature layers when bbox is absent. Keep "full" as the explicit whole-layer option. Update the parameter text, the result note, and the whole-layer timeout hint to match.
In the From Service dialog, make "Only the map's area" default to on for feature layers, or otherwise request the view for feature layers by default.
Update service_features_asked_for_over_an_area so the no-bbox case expects the view box. Keep a test that "full" sends no BBOX. Update docs/user-guide/data-formats.md to match.
For WFS 1.0, either send BBOX=w,s,e,n as the issue Proposal states, or record in #819 that WFS 1.0 is excluded, then reassess against the revised issue text.
If the maintainers agree that the whole layer should be the default, record that change in #819 first. Then reassess this check against the revised requirements.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
I read the whole diff and the helpers it calls (query_value, with_query, is_crs84, is_arcgis_query, base in ogc.rs, and catalogs::area). I did not build the code or run the tests. I found no correctness, security or panic-safety problems, so I posted no inline comments. The points below are minor.
Bugs
None found. Confidence is moderate-high, since nothing was run.
The antimeridian and off-globe checks in features_in_area are consistent with catalogs::area.
The "view" extent is clamped to ±180/±90, so a zoomed-out Web Mercator view still yields a valid box instead of silently falling back to the whole layer.
The BBOX axis order is right: CRS84 is longitude first, and urn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::4326 is latitude first.
The WFS 1.0 and unknown-version cases return None.
with_query places the query before a #fragment.
Quality
Misleading note for a view across the antimeridian (UI path, ~60%). In serviceui.rs, any area.is_some() && asked.is_none() prints "the service can't be asked for an area". When the map view itself crosses the antimeridian, catalogs::area returns west > east, and features_in_area rejects it. The user then sees a note blaming the service. service.rs already distinguishes this case ("an area across the antimeridian"), so the UI path could do the same.
Brittle timeout detection (~50%).slow_whole_layer in service.rs matches e.contains("timeout") || e.contains("timed out") on the error string. If the download error wording changes, the hint to use "bbox" silently disappears. A comment pointing at where those strings come from, or a typed error, would make this safer.
Behaviour only on desktop (~40%). In the wasm branch of service.add, a bbox is computed and then discarded (let _ = (items, asked)), and the error is unchanged. This matches the existing "web app downloads the features" path, but it means the new bbox parameter is documented for service.add without saying it is desktop-only. The web dialog's checkbox is shown on both platforms, so check that the web download path actually honours browse.area.
Test fragility (low).service_features_asked_for_over_an_area indexes boxes[0], boxes[1] and [2..] by request order, and relies on layer names M4 and M5 derived from map().layers.len(). Any extra request, such as a capabilities fetch, would break it in a confusing way.
Style (nit). The very long single-line format! strings and asserts in the new ogc.rs test look as if they bypass rustfmt's line width. Confirm that cargo xtask ci (fmt) passes.
Security
None found. The box values are f64, range-checked, and formatted into the query, so there is no injection path. Existing spatial parameters (bbox, filter, cql_filter, featureid, resourceid, geometry) are respected and never overwritten.
Performance
None found. Asking the service for only the features that cross the area is the intended improvement.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic! in non-test code. The panic! in the ogc.rs test is test-only.
User-visible strings in dialogs.rs use tl!, and the serviceui.rs note uses i18n::fmt. The note built with s.notify(format!(...)) in crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs is engine-level text, which the AGENTS.md allows to stay in English.
I did not check whether the new hostile_params_never_panic coverage exercises service.add with junk bbox values. The code looks safe, but a regression case for malformed bbox on a feature layer would fit the repository's rule.
Docs were updated in data-formats.md.

…#819)
A box asked in another coordinate system (OGC API Part 2's bbox-crs) would
have the lon/lat box read in that system: such an address keeps its own
request, as one that already filters does.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The change is sound overall. It follows the repo rules: no unwrap/panic in non-test code, wasm paths gated with #[cfg], and the new engine test and docs cover it. I found one issue worth fixing and a few minor notes.
Bugs
crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:937: an unknown map extent blocks adding a map layer. With "Only the map's area" ticked, the view's area is computed for every layer. If the extent is unknown, catalogs::area errors and the add is aborted. That also stops a WMS/WMTS layer, which never uses the area. Compute the area only for features offers. Confidence: medium. I posted this as an inline comment.
service.add (crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs): the note for a failed area request is a bit imprecise.why is chosen from area.is_none(). In practice that only happens for a box across the antimeridian, so it holds today. It would silently give a wrong message if features_area gains another None case. Confidence: low.
Security
No concerns. The box values are f64 formatted into the query after a finite-range check (NaN and out-of-range values are rejected), so nothing user-controlled is injected into the URL. SPATIAL_KEYS stops an address that already filters from being overridden.
Performance
No concerns. The change cuts download size for large layers.
Quality
The dialog's area state persists when the list is grouped. The checkbox is hidden for grouped imports (service.import), which still add whole layers, but browse.area stays set. Resetting it, or noting this in the docs, would avoid confusion. Confidence: low.
The UI and engine duplicate the "area can't be asked" note. The engine's wording is not translated. The UI's is, via i18n::fmt. That fits the repo's rules, since engine messages are not translated.
AGENTS.md
UI strings use tl! and i18n::fmt, with no catalog edits needed. The change adds no assets and no dependencies. It also builds for wasm, with asked handled under cfg(target_arch = "wasm32").
The PR says the wasm build wasn't checked. The cfg handling looks right, but CI should confirm it.

opengeos#819)
With Only the map's area ticked, an unknown view stopped a map layer (WMS,
WMTS) from being added too, though it never uses the area.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The change is sound: whole layers stay the default, and the helper is small, panic-free and well tested. I found no blocking issues. I read the diff and the helpers it relies on (query_value, with_query, is_crs84, is_arcgis_query, catalogs::area, workspace::view_extent). I did not build or run anything.
Bugs
None found. The BBOX axis order is correct for each service. Non-finite or out-of-range coordinates are rejected by the range checks. Numbers are written without exponents, and the box goes in before a URL fragment. Addresses that already filter are left alone.
Security
None. The values put into the URL are f64s checked against ranges. Anything non-finite fails the range check, so nothing from a request or response can reach the query string unescaped.
Performance
None. The change reduces download size when an area is asked for.
Quality
Misleading fallback note (low confidence, nit): features_in_area also returns None for an address that already filters. The note "the service can't be asked for an area" is then misleading, and the dialog path in serviceui.rs shows it for any rejected address. Inline comment posted at service.rs:431.
Loose /items check (low confidence, nit): the /items check in ogc.rs:746 is case-sensitive and path-only, unlike is_arcgis_query. Inline comment posted.
Fragile error match (low confidence, nit): slow_whole_layer decides whether to add the bbox hint by looking for "timeout" or "timed out" in the error text. If the HTTP layer's wording changes, the hint silently disappears.
Fragile test (low confidence, nit): service_features_asked_for_over_an_area relies on layer names (M4, M5) derived from the layer count, and on exactly six requests reaching the server. That is brittle but correct today.
Dialog behavior (low confidence): with the checkbox ticked and an unknown view extent, adding a feature layer fails with an error. This is acceptable, but the user can't add the layer without first unticking the box.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic! in the new non-test code (the panic! is inside a test).
The new strings use tl! and i18n::fmt.
The docs are updated.
The wasm path keeps its existing error. The author notes the wasm build was not checked, and the let _ = (items, asked) handling looks right.
service.rs calls catalogs::area through super::catalogs. This is an existing pattern and not a layering problem.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base bce9695 to PR head edfe57b).
When features_in_area rejects a requested area, asked is None, but the native path falls back to the whole-layer URL. A timeout then appends advice to request bbox or view, even though the caller already supplied one.

Summary
Fixes #819, as agreed there with @deniial00: a feature layer still comes whole by default, as in QGIS, ArcGIS Pro and GDAL, and an area can be asked for instead.
Today
service.addacceptsbboxbut uses it only for WCS coverages, so a feature layer is always downloaded whole. Brazil's municipalities from IBGE's WFS are 467 MB and take 75 s, past the 60 s thatservice.addwaits. With a box around one state they are 21 MB and take 5 s.rustgis_data::ogc::features_in_area(url, area), new. It adds a longitude/latitude box to anOffer::Featuresaddress, in each service's own terms:BBOX=w,s,e,n,urn:ogc:def:crs:OGC:1.3:CRS84when the request'sSRSNAMEis CRS84 (the type offers it). OtherwiseBBOX=s,w,n,e,urn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::4326, latitude first, as that URN fixes; a bareEPSG:4326is read either way by different servers.bbox=w,s,e,n. The server'snextlinks keep it.geometry=w,s,e,n&geometryType=esriGeometryEnvelope&inSR=4326&spatialRel=esriSpatialRelIntersects. The pages past the record limit (feat(data): read ArcGIS layers past their record limit, in the app and the browser #823) add to that query, so they keep it.It returns
Nonewhen the request can't carry the box (see Limits).service.add(crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs):"bbox"([west, south, east, north]or"view"), it asks a feature layer for that area;bbox, or"full", it asks for the whole layer, as before;areaasked for;"view";"bbox".The From Service dialog: a new Only the map's area checkbox, off by default, shown when the list has feature layers. With it ticked, a feature layer's address gets the view's box before the background download (as From URL… does).

Offer::Featuresaddress already says what it is (SERVICE=WFS&VERSION=…&SRSNAME=…, an ArcGIS…/query, or OGC API…/items), soOfferandServiceLayerdon't change. The command and the dialog share the helper.bbox,bbox-crs(a box in another system),filter,CQL_FILTER,FEATUREID,RESOURCEIDorgeometry.Limits
BBOXis read in the feature type's own coordinate system, and WFS 1.0 has no way to name another; that system isn't always longitude/latitude. This differs from the proposal in [Feature]: Feature services: ask for the map's area, not the whole layer (WFS, OGC API Features, ArcGIS) #819, which hadBBOX=w,s,e,nfor 1.0. Servers answer GetCapabilities in their newest version, so this only affects servers that speak 1.0 alone.catalog.searchdoes.service.import) and the Connections tree still add whole layers. The Web Data catalogs and a "refresh for the current view" were out of scope in [Feature]: Feature services: ask for the map's area, not the whole layer (WFS, OGC API Features, ArcGIS) #819.SRSNAME=EPSG:4326(andurn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::4326) with GeoJSON coordinates longitude first, but labels themurn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::4326.fix_axes(Map and feature services: WMS, WMTS, WFS, OGC API Features, ArcGIS REST #120) then reads them as latitude first and turns them round. Asked forSRSNAME=urn:ogc:def:crs:OGC:1.3:CRS84, which the type doesn't list, the same server returns the same 472 features labelled CRS84, and they aren't turned. I'll open that as its own issue, since it changes what every WFS is asked for.Testing
rustgis-data: newfeatures_asked_for_over_an_area, on addresses parsed from capabilities. It covers:None);arcgis_page_urlpage that keeps the envelope;0.0000001, not1e-7);bbox,CQL_FILTER) and a plain file (None).rustgis-engine: newservice_features_asked_for_over_an_area, against a local server that logs each request'sBBOX. It covers:"view";bboxand"full"(noBBOX);cargo xtask cion Windows:cargo fmt --all --check,cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warningsandcargo test --workspace, 2,290 tests, withRUSTGIS_LANGUAGE=en, after a rebase onmain(bce9695, with ArcGIS: sign in to ArcGIS Online and Enterprise portals with OAuth #915's ArcGIS sign-in: the fetcher adds its token to each request, so the box's query parameters don't touch it). Thedefine_projectionUI tests look for English labels and fail in a Portuguese locale, as they do onmain.rustgis-cli, theservice.addfrom [Feature]: Feature services: ask for the map's area, not the whole layer (WFS, OGC API Features, ArcGIS) #819 with Piauí's box returned 472 features in 9.4 s, the count from the issue, with"area"in the result.service.addkeeps its web app error.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
