feat(edit): move coincident polygon vertices together - #929
Moving a parcel corner with the existing vertex tool changes only the source feature. Add edit.moveSharedVertex and an opt-in Shared Vertices toggle so every polygon node stored at the source coordinate in the same fully loaded layer can move together, including the diagonally touching parcel at a four-way corner.
Use layer, row, part, ring, index, lon and lat; retain edit.vertex and its addressing. Match original stored coordinates exactly across all rows, including unselected, filtered or hidden rows and other parts/rings of the same feature. Preserve Geometry::move_vertex closing-duplicate semantics with a single-clone exact-coordinate rewrite. Undo/table copy-on-write and rule costs remain.
Pass all affected features through one apply batch and the existing session transaction. Rule rejection restores the whole edit; success is one undo step. Return the source vertex address and modified, counting final feature-value changes after rules. Direct same-position calls retain existing rule/history behaviour and cumulative edit counts.
Place the toggle beside Modify in Edit › Features, using the existing vertex icon and checked small-button style. It starts off and is session-only. It routes polygon moves to the new command; insertions, deletions and line/point moves keep their existing paths. Changing it cancels a held gesture.
Cache at most 4,000 incident geographic edges per gesture under the existing source-ownership checks. Redraws reproject the cache instead of scanning the layer. The initial capture can still scan the layer; the command independently processes the complete matching set, regardless of the preview cap.
Point-only contacts, including unrelated polygons touching by chance, deliberately move together. Different vertex densities are accepted without remapping: for P–Q against P–R–Q, moving Q leaves R unchanged and can separate the boundaries. The guide documents this limitation and directs users to mustNotOverlap, mustNotHaveGaps and topology.validate. Tolerance, insertion/deletion propagation and boundary remapping remain follow-up work. Move-only needs no Aeqd calculation.
Updates the editing guide and the partial roadmap item. No dependencies, project-format changes or transaction-framework changes.
Testing
Latest revision, Windows x86_64 / Rust 1.98: all 10 command integration tests pass. This includes the 8 existing cases, a frozen address-loop comparison across 15 open/closed-ring and destination variants, and a 32,768-repeated-node move with complete one-step undo/redo. Matching tests also cover same-coordinate Point and empty-shape neighbours remaining untouched.
The changed Engine library and integration-test target pass Clippy with -D warnings; Engine formatting and the Engine wasm32-unknown-unknown library check pass. New helpers and tests have Rustdoc.
Isolated geometry transformation comparison: the actual production helper was compared with the previous address-loop transformation on identical repeated-node inputs, asserting equal results. At 16,384 logical matching nodes, median-of-three native timings were approximately 140 ms before and 58 µs after. This excludes Session snapshots, table copy-on-write, validation, rules and UI, and is not an end-to-end editing benchmark.
Prior evidence retained for unchanged UI: the original patch (base bce96954) passed 42 focused tests on each of Windows x86_64 / Rust 1.98, macOS ARM64 / Rust 1.95 and Linux ARM64 / Rust 1.95: 8 command tests, 31 shared-move/existing pointer and snapping tests, and 3 preview-cache tests. Those were runs of the original implementation; the new geometry rewrite has not been rerun locally on macOS/Linux.
Earlier Windows hostile-parameter, UI lint/wasm, layer and private-item Rustdoc checks and the inspected offscreen screenshots retain their original scope. No UI or preview code changed in this revision.
Full workspace CI, macOS/Linux runtime, browser runtime and an end-to-end large-layer benchmark were not rerun locally for this revision. New-head GitHub CI supplies the fresh integration checks. Private timing drivers and evidence stay outside the source patch.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an opt-in, session-only Shared Vertices control, off by default. When enabled, moving a polygon vertex also moves vertices in the same layer with the exact same coordinates, including those in unselected or filtered-out features.
Shared moves can be undone or redone as a single step. Insertions, deletions, and line or point vertex edits retain their existing behavior.
Documentation
Updated the editing guide with usage details, limitations around differently segmented boundaries, and streamed-layer requirements.

Walkthrough
The change adds edit.moveSharedVertex to move exactly coincident polygon vertices within a layer. A default-off, session-only option enables the command during polygon vertex drags. The change also adds a drag preview, tests, user documentation, and a roadmap update.

The engine registers edit.moveSharedVertex. The command validates the source and destination, moves matching vertices in polygon features in the selected layer, and applies replacements through the session transaction. Tests cover matching, rules, validation, counts, and undo and redo. The guide describes the option and its limits. The roadmap records remaining work.

The UI adds a default-off session setting, a command to toggle or set it, and Ribbon and Command Search entries. Invalid toggle values return an error. UI tests cover the setting and its behavior.
Drag preview and command dispatch crates/ui-egui/src/vertexedit.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/move_shared_vertex.rs
Polygon drag ownership records the option state and caches incident edges for the preview. When shared moves are enabled, a non-insertion polygon drag uses edit.moveSharedVertex; other edits retain the existing edit.vertex path. Tests cover preview reuse, cancellation, and edit behavior.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
The PR adds edit.moveSharedVertex and an opt-in "Shared Vertices" mode for the Edit Vertices tool. The logic looks sound, and I found no blocking bugs. I read the diff and the surrounding code but did not build the crates or run the tests.
Bugs
None found. Closed-ring aliasing is handled because both the first and last indices of a ring are collected and moved. Row positions are used consistently. Inputs are validated, so hostile parameters return errors instead of panicking. (confidence: medium)
Security
No issues. Inputs are bounds-checked with get(), there is no unwrap or unsafe in non-test code, and the preview is capped at MAX_HANDLES.
Performance
The command scans every polygon in the layer and clones the row table through features.clone(). That is O(n) per call and acceptable for a single edit. (confidence: low)
The drag preview scans the layer once at press and then reuses the cached edges, which is bounded and tested.
Quality
shared_vertex.rs:72: the lon.abs() > 360.0 bound may differ from what edit.vertex accepts. The error message doesn't say which value was bad. Sharing one validator would keep the two commands consistent. (confidence: low, inline comment posted)
Rows are mutated before apply runs the design rules, so rollback depends on the session transaction. The engine test covers the project JSON. It is worth confirming that touch_geometry caches are also restored on rollback. (confidence: low; my inline comment on this didn't post because the line wasn't resolvable in the diff)
The Shared Vertices ribbon button reuses the existing vertices icon, which is also used for the Edit Vertices tool, so the two buttons look alike. (confidence: low)
AGENTS.md
User-visible text uses tl!, and the new UI command is registered in UI_COMMANDS.
The command lives in engine/cmd, the UI-only toggle lives in ui-egui, and neither breaks layering or wasm.
Tests cover hostile parameters, with an entry added to hostile_params_never_panic.
Docs and ROADMAP are updated.
The ribbon PR must state the ribbon-guideline rationale. Please confirm the PR body does, as the one-button-per-destination guideline applies here.

Nit (confidence: medium): a #[cfg(test)] counter that reaches into the tests module is wired into the production iterator chain. It works, but it puts test scaffolding in non-test code. Consider testing the early stop by wrapping the input iterator in the test (an iterator that counts items pulled) and dropping this inspect.

Performance nit (confidence: medium): move_vertex clones the whole geometry on every call, so a feature with many coincident nodes costs O(nodes × geometry size). A ring of thousands of identical coordinates makes this quadratic. Consider moving all nodes on one clone, or adding a bulk move helper to Geometry.
The change adds edit.moveSharedVertex and a session-only Shared Vertices toggle. I read the diff and the surrounding Geometry helpers and found no correctness or security bugs. I could not run the code, tests or CI here, so this is a read-through only. The two quality and performance nits are posted as inline comments.
Bugs
None found. The vertex addressing, closing-duplicate handling (move_vertex, for_each_vertex) and the UI's shared_edges closure and short-ring logic match Geometry::for_each_edge. Rollback on a rule rejection is covered by a test. (confidence: medium-high)
Security
None found. Parameters are validated as whole numbers and finite degrees, with the same bounds as edit.vertex. There are no panicking calls in non-test code, and hostile_params_never_panic gains junk cases for the new command. (confidence: high)
Performance
crates/engine/src/cmd/design/shared_vertex.rs:46: move_vertex clones the whole geometry for each coincident node, so a feature with many identical coordinates costs O(nodes × geometry size). It is quadratic only for degenerate input. (confidence: medium)
The initial preview capture on pointer press scans the whole layer. The PR description acknowledges this, and the preview is cached afterwards. (confidence: low)
Quality
crates/ui-egui/src/vertexedit.rs:348: a #[cfg(test)] counter that reaches into the tests module sits in the production iterator chain. Counting items pulled from a wrapped iterator in the test would keep test code out of production. (confidence: medium)
The new doc comment on design::commands() is generic and could be dropped. (confidence: low)
AGENTS.md
No violations found. There are no unwrap, expect or panic calls outside tests, and interface strings use tl! or are passed to the ribbon widgets. The UI-only command is registered in UI_COMMANDS, the ribbon placement is documented, and no new dependencies or assets are added.
I could not run cargo xtask ci. The PR description says full workspace CI and the browser runtime were not run, so check the wasm build and Linux CI before merging. (confidence: medium)

The ribbon guidelines ask for labels that say what happens. "Shared Vertices" names a mode, not an action. Something like "Move Shared Vertices" would match the command name and the ui.moveSharedVertices id. Because the label is also the text the tests look up, renaming it means updating get_by_label in crates/ui-egui/tests/move_shared_vertex.rs. Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The comment says retaining the shared rows "adds no table copy", but this clone makes the Arc shared. The first get_mut below goes through Features::deref_mut → Arc::make_mut, which deep-copies the whole Vec<Feature>, geometries included, even when only a few rows change. On a large layer each shared move therefore costs O(table), not O(matches). The session undo snapshot may already force that copy, so I'm not certain it's extra. Either way the comment is misleading. Consider keeping only the changed rows' prior state (you already build Change.before) and comparing against those for modified. Confidence: medium-low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Geometry::move_vertex returns a new geometry, so this loop clones the whole geometry once per matched node. A feature with many coincident nodes (for example a degenerate ring with repeated coordinates) costs O(nodes × size). That is hostile-input-reachable and unbounded. A single in-place pass that replaces every coordinate equal to original, while keeping the closing-duplicate rule, would be linear. Confidence: low-medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit: test-only instrumentation (#[cfg(test)] tests::SCANNED_EDGES) sits inside the production iterator chain. It's cfg-gated so it's harmless at runtime, but it couples the production code to the test module and makes the chain harder to read. Consider testing the early termination by observing a counting iterator passed to shared_edges, since it already takes impl Iterator. Confidence: low.
I read the full diff and the surrounding source. I found no crash or data-corruption bugs, only performance and quality concerns. I did not run the code or the tests. The command's error handling and the UI gesture ownership checks look sound. The new engine code uses no unwrap, expect or unsafe, and its failure paths return Err. The new hostile_params_never_panic cases cover the command.
Bugs
None found. One edge case looks handled correctly: NaN coordinates never compare equal, so they can't be matched by accident. (confidence: medium)
Security
None found. Command parameters are bounds-checked: whole-number addressing, finite lon and lat, |lon| ≤ 360 and |lat| ≤ 90.
Performance
crates/engine/src/cmd/design/shared_vertex.rs:31 clones the feature table, then calls get_mut, so a full copy-on-write copy follows. The comment says "adds no table copy", which looks wrong, and each move may cost O(table). (confidence: medium-low)
shared_vertex.rs:46 calls Geometry::move_vertex once per matched node, and each call clones the whole geometry. A feature with many coincident nodes costs O(nodes × size). (confidence: low-medium)
Quality
crates/ui-egui/src/vertexedit.rs:348 puts test-only instrumentation (#[cfg(test)] tests::SCANNED_EDGES) inside the production iterator chain. A counting iterator passed to shared_edges would test the same thing. (confidence: low)
crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs:2438 labels the button "Shared Vertices", which names a mode rather than what happens. "Move Shared Vertices" would match the command name. (confidence: low)
AGENTS.md
The ribbon label is the only guideline concern.
The user-visible strings use tl!.
The change adds no dependencies or assets.
Nothing in the diff affects wasm or layering.
The PR says full workspace CI and a browser runtime check were not run, so cargo xtask ci should be confirmed in CI.

Nit (low confidence): the bounds lon.abs() > 360.0 || lat.abs() > 90.0 are looser than the "degrees" error implies, and differ from how edit.vertex validates a destination. edit::validate runs on the moved geometry, so this probably catches the rest, but it's worth reusing the same check as edit.vertex for consistency. The message could also say which value is out of range.
Line number was the diff's, not the file's; I'll fold it into the summary.
Code review
The change adds an opt-in edit.moveSharedVertex command and a "Shared Vertices" ribbon toggle that moves every polygon vertex stored at the same coordinate. I read the diff and the vertexedit.rs drag-ownership logic, and checked the ribbon icon. I did not build or run the code.
The design is solid. The engine command is panic-free, with no unwrap/expect outside tests and get() used throughout. Rejection, undo and redo go through the shared apply transaction, and the tests cover rollback. The UI preview scan is bounded by MAX_HANDLES, and the toggle is session-only, which keeps projects unchanged. Drag ownership also cancels the gesture when the mode or the rows change.
Bugs
None found.
Security
None found. Command parameters are checked for type and range, and the hostile-params test was extended.
Performance
No problems found. The press-time scan of the layer is linear, run once per gesture, and the overlay is capped. shared_vertex::run clones the Feature rows' Arc, not the table. Comparing before against the result for the modified count is linear in the matched rows.
Quality
crates/engine/src/cmd/design/shared_vertex.rs:72 (low confidence): the range check lon.abs() > 360.0 || lat.abs() > 90.0 is loose, and its error "lon and lat are degrees" doesn't say which value is wrong. Consider reusing whatever edit.vertex uses for destination validation.
crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs, the new small(... "vertices" ...) button (medium-low confidence): it reuses the Edit Vertices icon, so the two ribbon buttons look identical. A dedicated icon would be clearer.
AGENTS.md
Ribbon guidelines (low confidence): the PR should state why the button belongs on the Edit tab. The diff adds a doc comment but I can't see the rationale in the PR text.
The interface strings use tl!, and the new command carries a .params schema. I found no layering or wasm concerns, and no new dependencies or assets.
