Reorganize Home ribbon with Locate dropdown and direct data access - #932
Implements the Home ribbon changes from discussion #862, using the second version shown in this reply.
Keep New Map and New Layout in Project; remove the other Home Project shortcuts.
Move Zoom Box below Previous/Next. Put coordinate and place/address lookup in a Locate dropdown beside Planar and Identify. The two entries still open separate dialogs; this does not add a combined search box.
Make Add Data a split button. Its fixed main action opens the file picker; the arrow keeps delimited text, geocoding, URL, service, Zarr, database, S3, new connections, graphics and sample-data options, and adds Add Folder (desktop only).
Give Data Sources a large button in Add and remove the duplicate Connections entry from Add Data.
Keep Directions and Infographics on Home. Moving or renaming them is outside this change.
Update Command Search labels, locations and dialog routing, and the affected user-guide pages. Engine command IDs and parameters stay unchanged. Remove the obsolete UI-only ui.openSources alias.
Allow the ui_shot example to set pixelsPerPoint, preserving its default of 2.
Home covers starting a map or layout, adding data, navigating, and selecting/inspecting features. The Locate menu avoids two partly filled columns and lets the whole Home tab fit at 1366 px, including Inspect. Coordinates and address lookup each cost one extra click.
Command Search (map.import); file drop/open routes documented in the data guide
Templates
Command Search (project.fromTemplate, project.saveTemplate); Publish save routes
Coordinates-only Locate in Inspect
Navigate › Locate › By Coordinates…
Add Data › Connections
Add › Data Sources; View › Windows › Data Sources; left-pane Data Sources tab
Data Sources is repeated on Home for the add-data workflow and under View › Windows for workspace management. Both use ui.pane.sources and its existing show/hide behavior.
Entry-point comparison
These counts come from comparing the before/after control routes, not from timing or running complete GIS workflows. Start on Home with the ribbon expanded; counts stop when the action's dialog/pane opens, exclude scrolling, text entry and file-picker interaction, and include tab clicks.

The Home ribbon, Command Search, command labels, runtime guidance, and documentation now use revised Locate, Add Data, Data Sources, and Web Data paths. The ui_shot example accepts and validates configurable pixelsPerPoint values.

docs/contributing.md (Ribbon guidelines, "Labels say what happens", ~line 93) says: "Go To XY pans to coordinates; 'Locate' would suggest it also finds addresses, as Find Place does." This PR reuses "Locate" for a menu that covers both, so the guideline is now stale (and the PR doesn't edit it). Either update that bullet or pick a label. Also note the same guidelines ask a PR to state ribbon placement; the "Add Data" label in the menu/Command Search ("Data Sources" at chrome.rs with location Home › Add / View › Windows) also deviates from the single-location format the other UI_COMMANDS use. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Updated in 6bf4bf0. The guideline now describes Locate as covering coordinates and place/address search, and Command Search uses the single primary location Home › Add for Data Sources.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Two small points on the new Data Sources button: (1) it passes false for the checked state, though it toggles ui.pane.sources. Other pane buttons (e.g. Infographics) pass app.ui.left == Some(LeftPane::Sources), so the button doesn't show as active when the pane is open and a click that closes the pane looks like nothing toggled. (2) The web_map icon is also used by "New Presentation" (~line 1235) and for URL sources in the pane, which breaks "one name and icon per thing". Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed the checked state in 6bf4bf0. I clicked the Home button to open and close the pane and checked screenshots with the pointer moved away: the highlight follows the pane state. I kept web_map because View › Windows already uses it for Data Sources; the guideline asks for the same icon for the same command, not a unique icon for every command.
I've posted the inline comments and am now writing the final review summary.
Code review
I found no crashes, panics or security problems in this PR. The Rust changes are UI wiring, label changes and the removal of ui.openSources. I checked the Rust for new unwrap/panic calls and for leftover references to ui.openSources and the old labels. I did not build or run anything.

Quality
Data Sources button never shows as active (ribbon.rs:489). It toggles ui.pane.sources but passes false for its checked state. Other pane buttons pass the pane's open state. Confidence: medium.
web_map icon reused (ribbon.rs:489). Data Sources shares it with "New Presentation" and with URL sources in the pane. Confidence: medium.
Odd location string (chrome.rs). The ui.pane.sources entry now reads "Home › Add / View › Windows", unlike the single path the other UI_COMMANDS use. Confidence: low.
Duplicate "Find Place" label (sharing.rs:157). locator.find is still labelled "Find Place" while map.findPlace is now "By Place or Address…". Confidence: low.
Stale references elsewhere.README.md, docs/privacy.md, docs/comparison/index.md, GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md and maps.md:59 still say "Go To XY" or "Find Place". Confidence: low.
Dropped ui.openSources test. The test of the pane's open/close behaviour went with the command. ui.pane.sources toggling now has no test of its own, though the PR leaves that behaviour unchanged. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
Guideline contradicted (ribbon.rs:433). docs/contributing.md (around line 93) says "Locate" would wrongly suggest address search. This PR uses "Locate" for a menu that covers both coordinates and addresses, and the PR doesn't update that bullet. Confidence: medium.
The other guidelines appear met. Labels end in "…" where they open a dialog, no engine command IDs change, there are no new strings to translate, and the PR lists the remaining routes for each removed control.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base c7bf8e1 to PR head 92e2205).
The UI now calls this action By Coordinates, so Go To XY no longer identifies the menu item. The dialog also has no bearing or pitch fields. Replace Go To XY here with map.goToXY to make clear that these parameters belong to the command, not the dialog.

GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit. Newer commits from the fork aren't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).
The PR reorganizes the Home ribbon (Locate menu, Add Data split button, Data Sources button). It also adds a pixelsPerPoint option to ui_shot. I read the whole diff and cross-checked the command routes. I did not build or run anything. I found no crashes or functional bugs. The findings below are stale text and small nits.
Bugs
None found. The routes the PR says remain (project.fromTemplate, project.saveTemplate, map.import, project.addFolder) all exist in chrome.rs search actions. Removing ui.openSources leaves no remaining callers (grep). big_split_menu is called with the right argument shape. Confidence: medium-high, since I did not compile.
Security
None. The ui_shot change bounds the scale (finite, positive, rounded size within the GPU texture limit) before it is used.
Quality
Stale menu paths in engine messages (high confidence, low severity): the error text in crates/engine/src/cmd/{service,zarr,s3,layer,geocode}.rs still says Home › Add Data › …. The menu is now Home › Add › Add Data › …. The PR updated the findPlace message, so the rest should be updated too. Inline comment posted.
Unrelated deletions in ribbon.rs (high confidence, nit): the blank line before the /// The Web Data menu doc comment is gone. Two explanatory comments were also removed (the sheet-style comment in project_group and the Data Sources/connections comment in the Add Data menu). Inline comment posted.
Stale i18n strings (low confidence, informational): the .tsv catalogs still hold Go To XY and Find Place. They are now unused, because the labels became "By Coordinates…" and "By Place or Address…". locator.find still uses "Find Place". AGENTS.md says the maintainer translates new strings, so no action is needed.
Nit, ui_shot.rs scale check: the check size * scale runs in f32, so the 8.01 boundary relies on f32 rounding. The tests pass at the chosen values. I could not post this as an inline comment because the line was outside the diff.
Route-removal tests: the PR deletes connections_entry_opens_sources_without_ever_closing_it along with ui.openSources. That is consistent. A small smoke test that the Home ribbon still reaches ui.pane.sources and the findPlace search action would guard the new routes.
AGENTS.md
Ribbon guidelines: the PR states the remaining route for every removed control and the click-count changes. That matches the contributing guidance.
Translatable text: new labels go through the ribbon widgets, which translate them.
Command ids unchanged: only labels and locations changed.
Assets: no assets were added, and the screenshots are linked rather than committed.
Minor: the Never crash rule does not apply to the expect calls in ui_shot.rs, because that file is an example, not library code.

The PR reorganizes the Home ribbon (Locate menu, Add Data split button, Data Sources button) and updates the menu-path text in code, tests and docs. I found no functional bugs. This review was read-only: I couldn't build or run anything, and I read only the Home-ribbon and ui_shot changes closely.
Bugs
None found. The removed ui.openSources has no remaining references (grep), and its test went with it. map.findPlace now routes to its dialog from Command Search.
Quality
crates/ui-egui/examples/ui_shot.rs:412: the new #[cfg(test)] module sits inside an example. Cargo builds examples but doesn't run their tests by default, so CI probably never executes screenshot_scale's tests. Move the helper into a lib module, or set test = true for the example. Confidence: medium.
crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs:484: Add Folder… is now only in the Add Data dropdown, and ui.addFolder isn't gated for wasm. Confirm it behaves in the browser, or gate it like Database…. Confidence: low.
crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs: unrelated edits slipped in (the blank line before /// The Web Data menu is gone, and the // A sheet is arranged… comment was removed). Nit.
crates/engine/src/cmd/sharing.rs:157: locator.find is still labelled "Find Place" in Command Search. It sits beside the renamed "By Place or Address…", so the two may be confused. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
No violations found: no new unwrap/panic in library code, command ids and parameters are unchanged, and interface strings are in the translatable form.
The ui_shot example uses expect and process::exit, as it already did.
The old labels ("Find Place", "Go To XY") remain in the i18n/*.tsv catalogs. AGENTS.md says the maintainer refreshes the catalogs before each release, so this isn't a blocker.
docs/contributing.md is updated to match the new "Locate" wording.

Align the Command Search location with the new Delimited Text path.
docs/user-guide/data-formats.md:19 now directs users to Home › Add › Add Data › Delimited Text…, but info.fileColumns still declares Home › Add › Delimited Text here. CommandSpec.location can expose this stale breadcrumb in Command Search. Change it to Home › Add › Add Data › Delimited Text and check the other data command locations in this list for the same stale path.

This PR moves the Home ribbon around (Add Data becomes a split button, with a Data Sources button, a Locate menu, and Add Folder moved under Add Data). It also updates the help text, docs and command locations to match, and adds a pixelsPerPoint option to ui_shot. I read the whole diff and found nothing that should block the merge. I did not build the code or run any tests.
Bugs
None found. screenshot_scale handles NaN, infinity, an f32 overflow of f64::MAX, and underflow to zero. Its rounding matches the boundary tests (8192.25 passes, 8192.5 fails). The [[example]] test = true entry makes the new unit tests in ui_shot.rs run. (high confidence)
Quality
ui.openSources is removed outright, along with its idempotence test connections_entry_opens_sources_without_ever_closing_it. Its replacement, the "Data Sources" button, uses the ui.pane.sources toggle, so it now closes the pane when it is already open. That matches other pane buttons and looks intentional. Any plugin, script or saved workflow that called ui.openSources will now fail, though. A grep of the repo finds no remaining references (medium-low confidence that this matters).
Two ribbon commands moved to "Command Search".map.import and project.fromTemplate are now reachable only through Command Search, and Import Project and Toolbox were removed from the Project group. This follows the "keep a route to every feature" rule only if Import Project (ui.open) and the Toolbox pane are still reachable elsewhere, for example File/Backstage and Analyze › Tools. The PR should say where, as the ribbon guidelines ask. (medium-low confidence)
project.newTemplate is now located at "Publish › Save As". That matches project.saveTemplate, but the ribbon label still reads "New Custom Template…", and the Templates menu no longer appears on Home. Check that the Publish tab actually exposes it. (low confidence)
The ui.pane.sources Command Search entry is renamed from "Data Sources Pane" to "Data Sources", and moved to "Home › Add". Make sure no test or doc still references the old label. (low confidence)
Several long hard-coded location strings ("Home › Add › Add Data › …") are repeated across about 40 error messages. They are easy to let drift again, and a shared constant would help. This is a nit.
screenshot_scale is applied after rs is created. An invalid scale therefore still pays for GPU initialisation before it exits with status 2. This is minor, and the check needs the device limit, so it is acceptable.
Security
None. The change touches UI text, docs and a developer example only.
Performance
None.
AGENTS.md
No new unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code. The expect calls in ui_shot.rs were already there, and it is an example.
New strings in ribbon.rs and dialogs.rs use the translating widgets. tl! is used for the Zarr hint.
Wasm builds: Add Folder is cfg-gated for the desktop, and the web Command Search gate in search_platform_disabled is unit-tested.
The PR changes the engine messages and the three test assertions together.

This PR reorganises the Home ribbon. It moves Add Data, Data Sources, Web Data and Locate under Home › Add and Home › Navigate. It updates every user-facing message and doc to the new paths, and adds a pixelsPerPoint option to ui_shot. I read the diff and spot-checked the source for the routes of the removed controls. I did not build or run anything.
Bugs
Command Search routes for removed ribbon buttons may be incomplete (medium). map.import and project.fromTemplate lose their ribbon buttons and are relabelled "Command Search". They only work from search if search_action maps them to OpenItem(...). Otherwise a bare run fails for a missing path. I could not confirm that mapping in the diff, so please check it. Commented inline.
project.newTemplate location points at a control that isn't in the diff (low–medium). It is now "Publish › Save As", but I found no matching ribbon button. Commented inline.
Import Project, Browser and Toolbox buttons removed from Home › Project (low). The routes I found remain: ui.open (Ctrl+O, backstage, quick-access bar), the Browser pane (panes.rs) and Analyze › Tools. I did not check whether Browser and Import Project are listed in Command Search. The PR text should name these routes, as docs/contributing.md asks.
Security
Nothing found. The Rust changes are message strings, labels and a validated numeric option.
Performance
Nothing found.
Quality
ui_shot gets [[example]] test = true, so the example is built and tested in every cargo test run (low). A test of screenshot_scale in the lib would avoid that CI cost. Commented inline.
The web_map icon is reused for Data Sources (low). Commented inline.
screenshot_scale is well tested at the edges: NaN, infinity, f32 overflow and underflow, and the rounding boundaries. Its use of std::process::exit(2) is fine for an example.
Translations: the stale Go To XY and Find Place entries stay in the .tsv catalogs. This is acceptable under the repo rules, and the new labels fall back to English.
AGENTS.md
Translatable text: the new labels go through ribbon widgets, which translate them. The new search_platform_disabled reasons are returned as plain &'static str. This matches the existing pattern, and I assume the caller translates them.
Wasm:Add Folder… and Database… are #[cfg(not(wasm32))]. The web search-disabled logic mirrors this, so the web build is unaffected.
Never crash: no new unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. The expects in ui_shot main already existed in the example.
Layering and quality gates: no new dependencies, and nothing above L6 is touched. I could not run cargo xtask ci, and the tests that assert the exact message text were updated to match.

"Command Search" is not a ribbon location, unlike the other values in this field. Command Search probably shows it as-is, and any check that a location names a real tab or group would fail. The same applies to project.fromTemplate (line 201). Consider a real location such as "Publish › Save As" or an empty string, if the registry allows one. Confidence: low-medium.
I read the full diff (45 files, mostly relabelling and docs) and checked the new ribbon wiring against the code. I found no bugs and no AGENTS.md violations, only two small quality points. I could not build or run anything in this review, so none of it is tested.
Bugs
None found. The ui.addFolder handler exists and the Add Folder menu item is correctly cfg-gated off wasm. map.findPlace now routes to its dialog in Command Search. search_platform_disabled is covered by a test. Removing ui.openSources leaves no remaining references.
Security
None. The ui_shotpixelsPerPoint input is validated for NaN, infinity, zero or negative values, and for the device's maximum texture size. It has tests.
Performance
None.
Quality
map.import, project.fromTemplate and similar commands now use "Command Search" as their location string (crates/engine/src/cmd/items.rs:59). That is not a ribbon location like the other values, so any check or display that expects a real tab or group may misbehave. Confidence: low–medium. This is an inline comment.
locator.find in crates/engine/src/cmd/sharing.rs is still labelled "Find Place" and sits at "Home › Inspect". map.findPlace is now "By Place or Address…", so Command Search will show two differently named place lookups. Confidence: low. I couldn't attach this as an inline comment because the file isn't in the diff.
Some user-visible strings were edited in place (for example "Add a Zarr variable first (Home › Add › Add Data › Zarr…)." and the dialog titles "By Coordinates" and "By Place or Address"). The i18n catalogs (ja.tsv, ru.tsv, de.tsv and the rest) have no entry for the new strings, so they fall back to English until the maintainer translates them. AGENTS.md says this is acceptable.
ROADMAP.md:188 and a few doc comments still say "Find Place" or "Home › Project". Confidence: low, cosmetic.
AGENTS.md
No violations seen. There are no unwrap or panic calls outside tests and the example's main, and no new dependencies or assets. The routes the removed buttons covered are documented in the PR description.

Summary
Implements the Home ribbon changes from discussion #862, using the second version shown in this reply.
ui.openSourcesalias.ui_shotexample to setpixelsPerPoint, preserving its default of 2.Home covers starting a map or layout, adding data, navigating, and selecting/inspecting features. The Locate menu avoids two partly filled columns and lets the whole Home tab fit at 1366 px, including Inspect. Coordinates and address lookup each cost one extra click.
Remaining routes
project.open)project.addFolder)map.import); file drop/open routes documented in the data guideproject.fromTemplate,project.saveTemplate); Publish save routesData Sources is repeated on Home for the add-data workflow and under View › Windows for workspace management. Both use
ui.pane.sourcesand its existing show/hide behavior.Entry-point comparison
These counts come from comparing the before/after control routes, not from timing or running complete GIS workflows. Start on Home with the ribbon expanded; counts stop when the action's dialog/pane opens, exclude scrolling, text entry and file-picker interaction, and include tab clicks.
The removed Home Toolbox shortcut formerly opened Tools in one click; its Analyze route takes two clicks and one tab switch from Home. Buffer, symbology and export implementations are unchanged.
Testing
cargo xtask ci(formatting, workspace Clippy with warnings denied, tests, layering).cargo check -p rustgis-web --target wasm32-unknown-unknown.ui_shotscale-boundary tests now run in the normal workspace test suite.ui_shot; the approved second version fits without horizontal scrolling.Screenshots remain local or linked as GitHub attachments; no image assets are committed.
