feat(map): a point's marks stacked, shifted and turned, and markers turned by a field - #933
Marks. A point layer's stacked strokes are now its marks: several markers stacked at the point, bottom first, in place of the symbol's. A white disc under a map sign is the common case: half of SMV25's signs are a white character under a coloured one.
It is shifted right and down. Its offset turns with its angle, as QGIS turns a marker layer's (measured in QGIS 4.2.3's renders).
A class can have marks of its own, as line strokes can.
Rotation by a field. A point layer's markers can turn by the angle in a number field, clockwise or counterclockwise.
A plain symbol turns with it.
A mark turns or keeps still by its rotate flag. On a line, that flag already turns a mark with the line.
Commands
layer.lineStrokes takes point layers; their strokes must all be markers.
layer.markerRotation is new: {"field", "counterclockwise"}.
Symbology pane
Rotation: a number field, and Counterclockwise.
Marks: Add Mark, Offset right, Offset down, With the field, and a preview.
QGIS import
A marker symbol becomes marks when it has several layers, or one layer that is shifted, turned or anchored off its centre. Left and top anchors become offsets of half the size, as QGIS draws them.
A data-defined angle of "field" or - "field" becomes the layer's rotation field. Other expressions are noted.
In a layer that turns, a class whose symbol has no angle of its own keeps still. In SMV25, the antenna signs stay upright where the terrain signs turn. My first version turned them too; a zoomed comparison with QGIS caught it.
Compatibility
Plain points: a plain point layer (one centred, upright marker) is drawn exactly as before, through sprites on the CPU and instances on the GPU. A test pins the GPU part.
Fallbacks: layers with marks or a rotation draw on the CPU. In a tilted view they stay on the ground.
Saved projects:marker_rotation isn't written when it is unset. A crafted file's junk reads as none, and the rest of the layer still reads.
Behaviour change:layer.lineStrokes on a point layer used to be refused; it now sets the marks. The old test asserting the refusal now refuses a polygon layer instead.
Checked against QGIS (SMV25)
Zoomed views: the antenna stays upright and the terrain signs ("Senke") turn the same way as in QGIS.
Overall scores: unchanged at 6.9 % (old town), 3.4 % (forest) and 10.9 % (overview). These signs are a few pixels each; the gain is in drawing them right.
Tests
render: marks stacked, shifted and turned; marks that keep still; selection halo; GPU fallback; plain points stay on the GPU.
engine: point marks and layer.markerRotation (export, junk input); every key of layer.lineStrokes is read.
map: the rotation saves, loads and reads crafted values as none.
QGIS import:
SMV25's two-character signs turned by - "WINKEL";
an anchored, offset, turned square;
a plain marker stays plain;
another expression is noted;
a categorized layer with one class turning and one still.
Point layers can display stacked, styled, and positioned marks, with rotation driven by a numeric field and clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
Configure point marks through the editor or commands, including different marks for individual classes. Line layers retain their placement and interval controls.
Point marks and selection highlights reflect configured offsets and rotation.
QGIS imports support additional layered marker styles, including font markers and field-based rotation.
Documentation
Updated the cartography and workspace guides with configuration details and examples.
…urned by a field
A point layer's stacked strokes are now its marks: each stroke of markers
draws its marker at the point, bottom first, in place of the symbol's,
shifted right and down; its offset turns with its angle, as QGIS turns a
marker layer's. A layer's markers can turn by the angle in a field
(clockwise, or counterclockwise); each mark turns with it or keeps still
(LineMarkers::rotate, which on a line turns it with the line).
- map: Layer::marker_rotation (MarkerRotation: field, counterclockwise),
not written when unset, a crafted one read as none.
- render: point_marks.rs draws marks and turned markers, with the
selection halo; such layers draw on the CPU and stay on the ground in a
tilted view. A plain point is drawn as before (sprites, GPU instances).
- layer.lineStrokes takes point layers (strokes of markers only);
layer.markerRotation sets the field.
- Symbology pane: Rotation (a number field, Counterclockwise) and Marks
(Add Mark, Offset right, Offset down, With the field, a preview).
- QGIS import: a marker symbol of several layers, or one shifted, turned
or anchored off its centre, becomes marks; a data-defined angle of
"field" or - "field" becomes the layer's rotation field, and in such a
layer a symbol without one keeps still (SMV25's antennas stay upright
where its terrain signs turn).
Part of opengeos#882 (piece 3b).
Point layers now support stacked marker strokes, per-mark offsets, and rotation driven by a numeric field. The changes add command and editor controls, QGIS marker-symbol import, and rendering paths for marks and selection highlights.

Regression risk in the "data-defined settings skipped" report. The old data_defined_on accepted both data_defined_properties and dd_properties children and flagged any active=true option under them. active_properties only looks at data_defined_properties, and only at Option name="properties" children with a name. A symbol that uses dd_properties, or a different layout, no longer gets the "skipped" note, so the import silently drops data-defined settings. Consider also matching dd_properties, or falling back to data_defined_on(node) when active_properties finds nothing but the old check is true. (Confidence: medium)

Valid, fixed in a7c5f36. When active_properties finds nothing on a symbol or symbol layer but the old data_defined_on check finds an active setting (QGIS 2's dd_properties, or another layout), the "data-defined symbol settings" note is reported again. The test now covers a QGIS 2 dd_properties angle.
I reviewed all 13 files in the diff. I posted one inline comment, on a regression risk in the QGIS import. A second inline comment, on the render splat guard, failed to post because that line isn't part of the diff, so it is listed below.
Bugs
QGIS import can silently drop data-defined settings (crates/map/src/qgis/symbol.rs, active_properties). The old data_defined_on check accepted both data_defined_properties and dd_properties and flagged any active=true option. The new code only reads data_defined_properties, and only properties options that have a name. Symbols in the other layout no longer get the "skipped" note. Confidence: medium.
Security
Nothing found. The new deserializers (de_marker_rotation, field names, strokes) are lenient and bounded, and a crafted file reads as "no rotation". The XML parsing is capped with take(64), field names at 256 bytes, and offsets are parsed and finite-checked.
Performance
Splat guard not matched to the marker turn (crates/render/src/lib.rs, around line 3125, not inline-commentable). The splat fast path checks only strokes.is_empty(). turn is computed afterwards, so the guard doesn't match point_marks::plain(strokes, turn). This is likely harmless because points have no extent. Confidence: low.
Layers with marks or a rotation field now draw on the CPU instead of as GPU instances. This is intentional, and the new test covers it.
Quality
panes.rs has an empty if points { // (A point has none.) } else { … }. Writing it as if !points { … } would be cleaner. Confidence: high, nit.
marker_rows now takes a points flag and branches on it. That is acceptable, but it grows an already long argument list and needed #[allow(clippy::too_many_arguments)].
AGENTS.md
I found no unwrap, expect or panic! in the non-test code I read. The new commands validate their parameters, and layer.markerRotation is covered by hostile-input tests. The .unwrap() calls and the panic! in the render test are in test code.
Interface text is wrapped in tl! or i18n::fmt, and the strings are not added to the catalogs, which is allowed.
I didn't run cargo xtask ci. I also did not check whether the stroke-count limit (MAX_STROKES) interacts with the new point marks.

…ent fields are noted; marks shifted into the view are drawn
- A symbol layer whose data-defined settings are in a layout the angle reader doesn't read (QGIS 2's dd_properties) is still noted as skipped.
- Categories turned by different fields, all turned by the first, are noted.
- A point off the view whose marks reach into it is no longer culled.

Minor perf (low confidence): marked_in runs for every off-view point row. It calls layer.style(row) and point_marks::reach, which allocates a Vec<Mark>, before it checks !strokes.is_empty(). For a plain layer, or one that only has a rotation, that is wasted work per culled point. Checking strokes.is_empty() first avoids it:

Done in 0bf7ccd: marked_in returns early for points without marks before it measures any reach, so a plain or only-rotated layer does no extra work per culled point.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit: an empty if points { /* comment */ } else { … } branch reads awkwardly. if !points { … } says the same thing. The same applies to preview.iter().filter(|_| !points) a few lines up, which could be a plain if !points around the loop.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining: style only. The empty branch carries the comment that says why a point has no such row, which reads more clearly here than a negated condition.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Low confidence: the loader drops a rotation field longer than 2 * MAX_FONT_NAME chars, but layer.markerRotation applies no such limit. A long, valid field name would work in the session and then silently lose its rotation after save and load. Use the same limit in the command, or drop this one: the field is looked up by name anyway, so a missing field already turns nothing.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining as low impact. A field name over 256 characters (2 * MAX_FONT_NAME) is far past what any format here produces (shapefiles allow 10, and GeoPackage and PostGIS names in practice stay well under it). The cap only guards the loader against crafted files. If such a name were set, the layer would lose its rotation on reload and draw unturned, with no crash.
I read the diff and the changed code. I did not build the code or run the tests. I found no crash or correctness bugs. The new code follows the "never crash" rules: no unwrap, expect or panic! outside tests, bounded loops (take(64)), and hostile input handled. I left three small inline comments.
Bugs
None found. I checked these:
The sign convention for counterclockwise rotation.
The offset turning with the angle.
The rem_euclid handling of negative and huge angles.
The RefCell use in the QGIS import.
Whether the GPU and stands_up fallbacks stay consistent.
Performance
crates/render/src/lib.rs: marked_in calls layer.style(row) and point_marks::reach (which allocates a Vec) for every off-view point row. It does this before checking strokes.is_empty(). A cheap early return avoids it. Confidence: medium-low.
point_marks::draw and reach allocate a Vec<Mark> per point. A large rotated layer, which now draws on the CPU instead of through sprites or GPU instances, pays this for every point. This is a known trade-off in the PR description. Confidence: low.
Quality
crates/map/src/symbology.rs: the loader drops a rotation field longer than 2 * MAX_FONT_NAME characters, but the layer.markerRotation command has no such limit. A long field name could lose its rotation after save and load. Confidence: low.
crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs: an empty if points { /* comment */ } else { … } branch and a .filter(|_| !points) on a loop are awkward. A plain if !points is clearer. Confidence: high, but this is a nit.
crates/map/src/qgis/renderer.rs: rotation.try_borrow_mut() quietly ignores a borrow failure. The closure never re-enters, so this can't happen today, but a plain Cell or Option threaded through would be simpler. Confidence: low.
Security
No issues. The new input paths (project JSON, QGIS XML, command parameters) are bounded, and a crafted field name or angle reads as no rotation.
AGENTS.md
The new UI strings use tl! and i18n::fmt. One call, i18n::fmt(if points { "Mark {n}" } else { "Stroke {n}" }, …), passes a non-literal. Extraction tools that look for literal arguments might miss it. Confidence: low.
The PR adds the command layer.markerRotation in crates/engine/src/cmd, as the architecture rules require.
The new tests cover hostile layer.markerRotation parameters. I did not confirm that hostile_params_never_panic exercises the new command.
The PR adds no assets or dependencies, and the docs are updated.

Replace the static angle when a field controls this mark.
If a marker layer has static angle="30" and an active angle field containing 45, this code keeps 30 in the mark. point_marks::draw adds the field turn, so the mark draws at 75°. QGIS uses the data-defined value in place of that layer’s static angle. Set the imported mark angle to zero for a direct field override. (api.qgis.org)

Minor · Track QGIS angle overrides per marker layer. · symbol.rs:534
read stores any marker-layer field angle in the single Converted.rotation and passes still = false to marker. marker then sets rotate: !still on every mark, so a sibling without an override can follow the field. QGIS applies the angle to the marker layer that owns it; only a symbol-level override should rotate all marks. Track the override per mark when setting LineMarkers.rotate, while retaining symbol-wide rotation for a symbol-level override.

The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
marker_turn is called per row in the render hot loop, and MarkerRotation::turn does ds.field_index(&self.field) (a name lookup) for every point. On a layer with hundreds of thousands of points, resolving the index once per layer render would avoid this. Confidence: medium. It only matters for large layers, and the layer is already forced onto the CPU path.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining. field_index is a scan over the layer's fields (a few dozen at most) per point, on a path that then builds and fills a path for each mark. That fill costs far more than the scan. Resolving the index once per render would mean passing it through marker_turn's callers, which the cost doesn't justify.
I've posted two inline comments and am now writing the final summary.
Code review
I read the diff for the engine, map, render, QGIS import and UI changes, and skimmed the rest. I did not open the UI, docs or i18n parts in detail, and I did not run the code or the tests. The PR adds stacked marks and field-driven rotation for point layers (layer.markerRotation) and QGIS import of data-defined marker angles.
Bugs
Nothing definite found. Crash safety looks sound: no unwrap/expect/panic! in non-test code, a crafted marker_rotation reads as none, field names are length-capped, and non-finite values are filtered.
Security
Nothing found. Field names and angles from files are bounded, and project and QML inputs are handled leniently.
Performance
marker_turn field lookup per row (crates/map/src/lib.rs:515): ds.field_index(name) runs for every point on every render. Resolving it once per layer would avoid this on large layers. Confidence: medium. The impact is small, since these layers are forced onto the CPU path anyway.
Quality
Misplaced doc comment (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:422): /// A line layer is active. now sits on need_lines_or_points, and need_lines and need_points have no docs. Confidence: high. It is trivial to fix.
AGENTS.md
User-visible strings use tl!. The command is registered in engine/cmd. The render and map changes use no unsafe. The hostile_params_never_panic test covers every registered command, so check that it exercises layer.markerRotation with junk. I did not verify this. Confidence: low.

A disabled categorized or graduated symbol can set turned even though the renderer does not read that symbol. symbol::read then converts an enabled plain marker into class strokes. Layer::has_strokes() rejects the layer from the GPU path, so the layer uses CPU rendering.
Compute turned from symbols used by enabled classes. Preserve a symbol when both an enabled and a disabled class reference it. Keep this separate from filtering disabled symbols during rotation-field collection.

What it does
Marks. A point layer's stacked strokes are now its marks: several markers stacked at the point, bottom first, in place of the symbol's. A white disc under a map sign is the common case: half of SMV25's signs are a white character under a coloured one.
Rotation by a field. A point layer's markers can turn by the angle in a number field, clockwise or counterclockwise.
rotateflag. On a line, that flag already turns a mark with the line.Commands
layer.lineStrokestakes point layers; their strokes must all be markers.layer.markerRotationis new:{"field", "counterclockwise"}.Symbology pane
QGIS import
"field"or- "field"becomes the layer's rotation field. Other expressions are noted.Compatibility
marker_rotationisn't written when it is unset. A crafted file's junk reads as none, and the rest of the layer still reads.layer.lineStrokeson a point layer used to be refused; it now sets the marks. The old test asserting the refusal now refuses a polygon layer instead.Checked against QGIS (SMV25)
Tests
layer.markerRotation(export, junk input); every key oflayer.lineStrokesis read.- "WINKEL";Part of #882.
