Analysis: project a raster onto a chosen grid (raster.project, #821 part 1) - #953
Part 1 of #821: Project Raster (raster.project) puts a raster on a grid of your choosing, so that rasters from different sources line up cell for cell. That is what map algebra, the Suitability Modeler, a series for Trend Analysis or a model's inputs need.
rustgis-cli run --cmd 'layer.addData={"path":"ndvi.tif"}' --cmd 'raster.project={"layer":"ndvi","crs":31983,"cellSize":100,"extent":[-46,-11,-40.3,-2.7],"resampling":"average","path":"ndvi_100m.tif"}'
The grid is set by:
crs: by default the layer's;
cellSize: one number or [x, y], in the output system's units;
origin: a point a cell corner falls on. By default [0, 0], so two rasters projected with the same crs and cellSize line up;
extent: a polygon layer (its selected features' bounds, or all of them), [west, south, east, north] or "view". By default the layer's footprint. It is widened to whole cells.
Another raster's grid:"grid": "dem_100m" takes that raster's coordinate system, cells and extent exactly.
Resampling:
nearest (the default), bilinear and cubic sample each cell at its centre;
average and mode take every pixel whose centre falls in the cell, skipping no-data. This is what a coarser grid of elevation or of land-cover classes should hold.
Output: a new layer and, with path, a cloud-optimised GeoTIFF.
It builds on crates/analysis/src/warp.rs: the footprint, the row mapping and the sampling are shared with Georeference, which doesn't change.
average and mode aggregate over the cell. On a grid finer than the raster, a cell that no pixel centre falls in takes the pixel under its centre, so no cell is left empty.
Origin [0, 0] by default, so grids built separately line up without passing a template.
A whole-number pixel type keeps its type, so its mean is rounded (as GDAL does).
Cells off the raster are its no-data value. A raster without one gets NaN (floating point) or 0 (whole numbers), as GDAL leaves them. A colour image gains an alpha band instead, so those cells are see-through.
Datums are shifted as everywhere in RustGIS, through each system's transformation to WGS 84.
Limits
No pane yet. It runs from the Script pane, the AI Assistant, the command line, Python and MCP. A Workflows form can follow.
The result has to fit in memory: 120 million values (cells times bands), 32 million in the web app. A larger grid is refused, naming the limit. A raster read from its overview is projected at that resolution, and the result says so.
No grid shifts: SAD69 and Córrego Alegre go through a Helmert step to WGS 84, a few metres from IBGE's grid shifts.
rustgis-engine: new a_raster_projected_onto_a_chosen_grid. It checks that:
grids of the same cell and origin line up;
"grid" puts a raster exactly on another's grid;
a polygon layer's selection gives the extent (Brazil in 50 km cells);
bad parameters are refused before anything is made (a grid with its own settings, bad cells, origins, extents and methods);
a grid too fine for memory asks for a larger cellSize.
rustgis-assistant and plugins.rs: like Georeference, raster.project is a file command (asks before it runs, needs a plugin's file permission) only when it is given a path.
cargo xtask ci on Windows (cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo test --workspace, 2,347 tests, with RUSTGIS_LANGUAGE=en), after a rebase on main (2f08089).
Added Project Raster to place georeferenced raster data on a chosen grid or match an existing raster’s grid.
Configure the coordinate system, cell size, origin, and extent. Extents can come from a bounding box, the current view, or selected vector features—or all features when none are selected.
Choose nearest, bilinear, cubic, average, or mode resampling. Add the result as a new layer or optionally export it as a GeoTIFF.
Documentation
Added guidance on grid alignment, resampling, no-data and color handling, datum transformations, memory limits, output resolution, and trend analysis.
…pengeos#821 part 1)
raster.project puts a raster on a grid of another coordinate system, cell size,
origin and extent (a polygon layer, a box or the view), or exactly on another
raster's grid, so rasters from different sources line up cell for cell.
Cells are sampled at their centres (nearest, bilinear, cubic), or take every
pixel whose centre falls in them (average, mode), which is what a coarser grid
of elevation or land-cover classes should hold.
It builds on warp.rs: the footprint, the row mapping and the sampling are
shared with Georeference, which is unchanged.

Walkthrough
This PR adds raster projection onto explicit or template grids. It adds sampling and aggregation methods, exposes the operation through raster.project, and documents its grid, extent, resampling, and output options.
Changes: Raster projection
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Grid and bounds foundation crates/analysis/src/warp.rs
Shared footprint and pixel-size helpers support north-up grids and projected bounds. The warp path uses the shared grid and sampling setup.
Projection and resampling crates/analysis/src/warp.rs
Projection supports sample, average, and mode methods. Aggregation uses source pixel centers within output cells, with fallback sampling when a cell contains no source center. Tests cover aggregation, grid validation, outside-cell values, and projection bounds.
Command integration and validation crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/plugins.rs, crates/assistant/src/tests.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
raster.project accepts explicit or template grids, derives extents from supported sources, and can write GeoTIFF output. Tests cover command options and file gating. The guide documents grid and resampling behavior.

A rabbit maps each pixel’s place, Across a grid with measured pace. Some cells sample, some average, Modes settle ties with care. New layers land where grids align, And bunny footprints cross the line.
Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
origin silently drops non-numeric array entries, so ["x", 1, 2] is accepted as [1, 2] and the grid lands in the wrong place. High confidence. Inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs:364, with a suggestion.
average does not weight colour bands by alpha, unlike bilinear, so transparent pixels pull the mean toward black on RGBA sources. Medium confidence. Inline comment on crates/analysis/src/warp.rs:663.
project has no antimeridian guard for geographic output, which warp has (the 180° check). Low confidence: a raster footprint that wraps is rare, but the output would be a nonsense 360° grid.
Grid::snapped does not check that the snapped extent is finite and positive. .max(1.0) turns a NaN or collapsed extent into a 1×1 grid (for example, origin 1e308). It is refused neither as an error nor by a crash, so this is hostile-input validation only. Low confidence.
Security
Nothing found. Writing to path is gated as a file command in assistant and plugins.rs, is_tif restricts the extension, and no new unwrap, expect, or unsafe appears in non-test code. The mode_of, row_positions and holds index paths use get.
Performance
Nothing blocking. Bounding boxes, the MAX_SAMPLES check before allocation, and mode_of's sort are all proportionate.
Quality
Nit, warp.rs:719: v.get(k..).map_or(0, …).max(1) has an unreachable branch. Inline suggestion posted.
Nit, warp.rs:466: Canvas::of(r, picture: bool) is an opaque boolean at the call sites (Canvas::of(r, true)). A named constructor or a two-variant enum would read better.
Nit: project_raster writes the COG before add_raster, so a failure there leaves an orphan file.
Test gaps: no case for an RGBA average, and no case for a non-numeric origin entry.
AGENTS.md
Checked and no violations found. Commands are not dialogs, the engine's format! messages follow existing engine code, hostile_params_never_panic covers the new command through the registry, the docs are updated, and no new assets or dependencies appear. The direct cogwrite::write_file call matches the existing georeference path, so I did not flag it as a web-Services deviation.
I did not run the test suite; these findings come from reading the diff and the surrounding code.

An origin with anything but two numbers is refused, not read from the
numbers left; a grid whose snapped corners overflow is refused. Average
weighs a colour image's colours by alpha, as bilinear does, so see-through
pixels take no colour into a cell.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
raster.project silently uses the map's view when extent is a number, boolean or object, because catalogs::area falls back to the view for any non-array, non-"view" bbox. Confidence: high. (crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs:387)
A non-string grid (for example "grid": 5) is silently ignored, because ps(p, "grid") returns None and the raster is projected onto the default grid. Confidence: medium. (imagery.rs:337)
The reported resampling is the requested method, but palette images are forced to nearest (sampled) or mode (aggregated), so the result can name a method that was not used. Confidence: medium. (imagery.rs:405, warp.rs around 594 and 630)
mode ignores the alpha weighting that average applies, so see-through colours can win the mode of an RGBA cell. Confidence: low, since the intended semantics are not stated. (warp.rs:682)
Security
Nothing found. path is limited to .tif/.tiff and is gated as a file command in plugins.rs and the assistant, the same as georeference.
Performance
Nothing significant. row_positions and the shared top/bottom corner rows keep the work linear in cells and pixels, and MAX_SAMPLES bounds memory before allocation. mode_of is O(n log n) per cell, which is acceptable.
Quality
A bad array extent such as [1, 2, 3] reports "bbox is [west, south, east, north]…", which names a parameter this command does not have. Confidence: high. (Folded into the first bug comment.)
project_raster is about 110 lines. The default-grid branch (cell, origin, extent) could be a helper. Confidence: high.
Canvas::of(r, true) and Canvas::of(r, false) take a bare boolean. An enum or a named constructor would read better. Confidence: high.
docs/user-guide/analysis.md (around line 1117): ""grid", the first one's" is ambiguous. Say which raster's grid is meant. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code. The new tests use unwrap, which is allowed there.
Layering holds: the analysis code stays at L2 and the command at L5/L6 boundary is unchanged.
The warp() refactor appears behaviour-preserving: the footprint, pixel size, row mapping and Canvas logic match the old inline code. The new code uses no std::time and writes files the same way georeference does.
Messages use format! and bare literals, as the existing imagery.rs errors do. This is consistent with current practice, though AGENTS.md asks for tl!/i18n::fmt on user-visible text.
Test coverage
a_raster_projected_onto_a_chosen_grid does not cover a numeric or object extent, a non-string grid, or palette resampling reporting. Adding those would catch the first three findings.

I read the full diff against the base, the surrounding warp.rs, imagery.rs, catalogs.rs and the engine test harness. I found no crash paths or unwrap()/panic! in non-test code. The core resampling logic checks out: the top-left edge rule in holds, the shared corner rows in aggregated, the mode_of tie-break, and the warp refactor keeping the old behaviour. I hand-checked the expected values in average_and_mode_take_every_pixel_in_a_cell. I could not compile or run the tests here.
Bugs
Antimeridian: project has no 180°-longitude guard on the footprint, unlike warp. A raster crossing the antimeridian gets a world-wide grid, bounded by MAX_SAMPLES, with no error. (warp.rs:365, confidence low–medium)
Polygon extent: bounds_in treats a layer's features as lon/lat without checking the dataset's crs. The loaders probably transform to lon/lat, so I could not confirm this from the diff. (imagery.rs:393, confidence low)
Security
None found. The output path goes through is_tif and the same cogwrite::write_file call as georeference, and the assistant and plugin gates are updated.
Performance
Minor: mode allocates a fresh Vec per cell and band. Reusing a buffer, as values does, would avoid this. (warp.rs:695, confidence low)
Quality
Misplaced doc comment: the raster.project doc sits above const EXTENT, so project_raster is undocumented and the constant's doc is garbled. (imagery.rs:327, confidence high)
Duplicated COG-writing and layer-recording block shared with warp_to_fit. project_raster is also long enough to split. (imagery.rs:430, confidence medium)
The palette-to-nearest/mode rule is repeated in used_on, sampled and aggregated. Resolving the method once in project() would keep it in one place. (warp.rs:419, confidence medium)
Canvas::of(r, true/false) is an opaque boolean at call sites. (warp.rs:480, confidence medium)
.map_err(|_| EXTENT) discards the specific catalogs::area error, so an out-of-range bbox gets a generic message. (imagery.rs:396, confidence medium)
Mode on RGB(A) takes each channel independently, so a cell can get a colour no source pixel had. This may be intended; a comment or test would settle it. (warp.rs:695, confidence low–medium)
AGENTS.md
Compliant on the points I checked: no unwrap/expect in non-test code, get() used over indexing, unsafe absent, tests added, the new command is registered in the assistant and plugin gates, docs updated, no new assets or dependencies. I did not verify that hostile_params_never_panic picks up the new command automatically.

An alpha with no value weighs nothing; the method that runs is resolved
once; the extent error keeps its reason; the command's doc comment is back
above it; the docs say how average and mode treat a colour image.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
I read the full diff, the repository guidelines, and the surrounding source for the new raster.project path (warp.rs, imagery.rs, add_raster, Dataset, is_valid). I could not compile or run tests here (no build tools), so the points below come from reading the code.
Bugs
Reported layer name can be stale when a name is taken (high confidence).add_raster renames a duplicate to "… (2)" but returns only the layer id, so info["name"] keeps the requested name. A follow-up "grid": <reported name> then silently resolves to the older layer. Inline comment posted on crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs:437, with a suggested fix and a regression test.
Security
Nothing new. path writes follow the existing raster.georeference pattern, and the assistant and plugin gates were extended to match. Commands and their parameters are otherwise handled as hostile input (get(), filter, clamp, and the Option checks in Grid::snapped and origin).
Performance
Nit: aggregated allocates a fresh shown Vec for each cell and band in mode mode. Reusing one buffer would remove per-cell allocation on large grids. Not a correctness issue.
Quality
mode_of relies on an invariant (medium confidence, no current hang). The loop advances by the number of values equal to x, so a NaN would spin forever. is_valid excludes non-finite values today, so it is safe for now. Inline comment posted on crates/analysis/src/warp.rs:752-765 with a chunk_by version that always makes progress.
Low confidence: a cell whose corners can't be placed (near a pole or projection edge) is skipped with continue, leaving it no-data even when the raster covers part of it. Acceptable as a limit, but worth a sentence in the docs.
Low confidence: holds() takes the orientation from the signed area, so a self-intersecting (bow-tie) quad from a projection fold gives wrong membership. It is an edge case.
Low confidence: in project_raster, s.notify(…reduced resolution…) fires before write_file. If the write fails, the notice still appears for a command that returned an error. Moving the notify after the write fixes it.
The warp() refactor into footprint, pixel_size, Canvas, Grid and sampled looks behaviour-preserving: Canvas::of(r, true) keeps the old picture rules, and the georeference path keeps NaN as its empty value.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe in non-test code; the new code uses get() throughout.
The hostile-parameter scan list is extended with raster.project.
Docs (docs/user-guide/analysis.md) are updated. No ribbon, asset, wasm, or dialog changes. The engine has no tl!/i18n::fmt calls, so the translation rule does not apply to its notices.

I read the full diff and checked the surrounding code. The main correctness-sensitive areas hold up: the warp() refactor keeps its behaviour, the cell and sample limits match MAX_SAMPLES (120M native, 32M web), the polygon-layer extent is valid because vector datasets are always stored in lon/lat, and the raster.project path is gated for the assistant and plugins. The findings are minor.
Bugs
None confirmed.
Security
None found. The only file write is gated behind path, and the assistant and plugin gates are covered by tests.
Performance
aggregated buffers every pixel of a cell for the mean too, and mode_of copies them again. Peak memory scales with the largest cell times bands, on top of the input raster. Average only needs a running sum and weight. Medium-low confidence. (crates/analysis/src/warp.rs:671)
Quality
Canvas::of(r, bool) is an unclear boolean flag. The palette rule is also repeated in three places. Nit, high confidence. (crates/analysis/src/warp.rs:481)
AGENTS.md
run[0] in mode_of is safe but breaks the "get() over indexing" convention. Nit, high confidence. (crates/analysis/src/warp.rs:765)
Otherwise compliant: no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, the new strings go through tl!-style labels, and the docs are updated.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 2f08089 to PR head d042fd8).
I reviewed the whole diff: warp.rs (the refactor and the new project, Grid, Canvas, aggregated and holds helpers), the raster.project command, the assistant and plugin gates, and the docs. I checked the Georeference refactor against the original code and found it behaves the same. The Canvas and row-mapping changes keep the old output. I found no panic paths in the new code: no unwrap/expect in non-test code, and indexing goes through get.
Bugs
None found. The cell-edge rule in holds puts each pixel centre in exactly one cell, and the tests cover that.
Security
None found. path is restricted to .tif/.tiff and is gated as a file command for the assistant and plugins.
Performance
Mode allocates per cell and per band, and copies every source pixel in the cell. Medium confidence. shown is reallocated on every cell and band, and values/weights keep a copy of each pixel. Peak memory for a coarse cell over a large raster can reach about 3× the input band, and the output-cell limit does not bound that. Quality
project_raster (crates/engine/src/cmd/imagery.rs:333) is about 130 lines in one function. Moving the grid-parameter parsing into its own helper would make it easier to read.
The overview s.notify (imagery.rs, in project_raster) runs before the file write and add_raster. If either fails, the user still sees "projected at reduced resolution". Moving it after success would be more accurate. Low confidence.
If the COG write succeeds and add_raster then fails, the file is left on disk. Low confidence, and Georeference behaves the same way.
AGENTS.md
Compliant on the points I checked: no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, a hostile_params test entry was added, the assistant and plugin gates match the Georeference pattern, the docs are updated, and no vendor assets or new dependencies were added.
Not checked: whether the wasm32 build and the i18n catalogs are affected. The PR does not touch the UI, and the CI build was not run here.
ROADMAP.md and GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md have no entry for this work, so no update is needed there.

Summary
Part 1 of #821: Project Raster (
raster.project) puts a raster on a grid of your choosing, so that rasters from different sources line up cell for cell. That is what map algebra, the Suitability Modeler, a series for Trend Analysis or a model's inputs need.crs: by default the layer's;cellSize: one number or[x, y], in the output system's units;origin: a point a cell corner falls on. By default[0, 0], so two rasters projected with the samecrsandcellSizeline up;extent: a polygon layer (its selected features' bounds, or all of them),[west, south, east, north]or"view". By default the layer's footprint. It is widened to whole cells."grid": "dem_100m"takes that raster's coordinate system, cells and extent exactly.nearest(the default),bilinearandcubicsample each cell at its centre;averageandmodetake every pixel whose centre falls in the cell, skipping no-data. This is what a coarser grid of elevation or of land-cover classes should hold.path, a cloud-optimised GeoTIFF.It builds on
crates/analysis/src/warp.rs: the footprint, the row mapping and the sampling are shared with Georeference, which doesn't change.Choices in this PR
reproject_raster/resample. As discussed in [Feature]: Put rasters on one grid: project and align them (coordinate system, cell size, origin, extent, resampling), and rasterize polygons onto it #821, GeoLibre is an optional download, and a plugin can't install it. Also, itsaverageandmoderead only the 3×3 pixels around the nearest one, rather than aggregating the whole cell.averageandmodeaggregate over the cell. On a grid finer than the raster, a cell that no pixel centre falls in takes the pixel under its centre, so no cell is left empty.[0, 0]by default, so grids built separately line up without passing a template.Limits
raster.rasterize(polygons onto the grid, [Feature]: Put rasters on one grid: project and align them (coordinate system, cell size, origin, extent, resampling), and rasterize polygons onto it #821 part 2) is not in this PR.Testing
rustgis-analysis(warp.rs), new tests:average_and_mode_take_every_pixel_in_a_cell;each_pixel_is_in_one_cell_and_a_finer_grid_takes_the_nearest;projected_data_keeps_its_bands;snapped_grids_line_up_and_are_bounded;a_projection_and_back_keeps_values_in_place.rustgis-engine: newa_raster_projected_onto_a_chosen_grid. It checks that:"grid"puts a raster exactly on another's grid;gridwith its own settings, bad cells, origins, extents and methods);cellSize.rustgis-assistantandplugins.rs: like Georeference, raster.projectis a file command (asks before it runs, needs a plugin's file permission) only when it is given apath.cargo xtask cion Windows (cargo fmt --all --check,cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo test --workspace, 2,347 tests, withRUSTGIS_LANGUAGE=en), after a rebase onmain(2f08089).docs/user-guide/analysis.md) name it where Resample was the only way to match grids. In Trend Analysis, they say when to use it: for the mean of a finer layer's pixels, since a stack on mixed grids (Analysis: trends and summaries over raster stacks on mixed grids and over multi-band GeoTIFFs dated by their band descriptions (#579) #890) is otherwise resampled by nearest neighbour.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
