fix(ui): reserve popup header space for controls - #955
Lay out attribute popup controls before the title so long feature names cannot consume their space.
Truncate the feature title and layer name within the remaining header width, with full names available on hover.
Add regression coverage for short, long, and unbroken Unicode titles at the minimum popup width, including single- and multi-feature popups, navigation, and close interactions.
Document the bounded names in the pop-up user guide. No new dependencies, command changes, or translation strings.
Testing
cargo xtask ci — passed (formatting, workspace clippy, workspace tests, and layer checks).
cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web — passed with Homebrew LLVM configured as documented for macOS (PATH, CC_wasm32_unknown_unknown, and AR_wasm32_unknown_unknown).
Reproduced the overlap before the fix with ui_shot; rendered and inspected long, short, and unbroken Unicode titles after the fix. Exercised next, previous, close, and pointer-clicked Zoom To (map zoom changed from 5.3 to 13.1).
Rendered UI verification was on macOS using the shared egui UI, not Windows/Edge.
Identify popup headers now truncate long feature titles and layer names with an ellipsis, keeping the close, zoom-to-feature, and result-navigation controls visible. Hover over either shortened name to view the full text. Result navigation and closing the popup continue to work when names are short, oversized, or use CJK characters.

Walkthrough
The identify-popup header now shares available space between its labels and controls. Long titles and layer names truncate and show their full text on hover. A smoke test checks title spacing, result navigation, and closing. The user guide describes the updated header.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #948 requires long attribute popup titles to avoid overlapping the window controls. They must truncate, wrap, or widen the popup, and the controls must stay separated from the title. The whole-PR summary states that crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs now places the close, zoom-to-feature, and result-navigation controls in a right-to-left row beside the title and layer labels. Both labels truncate to the remaining width and show full text on hover. This satisfies the truncation option in the issue. crates/ui-egui/tests/smoke.rs adds popup_titles_leave_room_for_controls, which covers short, oversized Latin, and long CJK names at one and two results, plus navigation and close actions. The previous review reached the same conclusion at head 3e82fbb. The incremental commit 5e660e8 is reported as a test-only change to a popup geometry test (missing-glyph boxes allowed). The incremental diff could not be read, and the smoke-test file read at head was truncated before the popup test. The current popup test body was therefore not checked directly. Platform verification (Windows/Edge) is not a coding requirement and is not assessed.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR file set, as summarized, contains three files: crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs (popup header layout and truncation), crates/ui-egui/tests/smoke.rs (regression coverage for the popup), and docs/user-guide/editing.md (documentation of bounded popup names). Each change supports the #948 objective. The summary reports no changed public declarations and no new dependencies, commands, or translation strings. The PR objectives describe no unrelated product behavior. The incremental commit 5e660e8 is reported as a test-only adjustment that supports the same popup regression coverage. Its diff could not be read, so that commit is verified only by its description and not by source inspection.

Possible visual regression: header controls are now top-aligned. Before, the controls sat in a ui.horizontal (centre cross-axis), so × / zoom / ‹ › were vertically centred against the two-line title block. Now right_to_left(Align::Min) pins them to the top. Other header rows in this crate use right_to_left(Align::Center) (e.g. panes.rs:612, chrome.rs:342), which suggests centring is the house style. Please compare the "after" screenshot against the old placement. If the controls moved, egui::Align::Center is the likely fix, though it's worth checking that egui centres controls laid out before the title block. Confidence: medium (I could not render it).

Compared the attached before/after renders: controls remain aligned with the first title line. The previous inner control layout also used Align::Min; retaining the current layout. (reviewed at 5e660e8)

Bound is looser than it claims. The popup's right edge is title_left - 12 + 240, but the header's right content edge sits 12px inside that (the header's inner margin). So this assertion would pass even if the close button overflowed the popup's right padding by up to 12px. The 240 also duplicates the identify_popup_limit value set a few lines up. Suggested tightening:
Suggested change
assert!(close.max.x <= title_rect.min.x - 12.0 + 240.0,"close must stay inside the popup");
assert!(close.max.x <= title_rect.min.x - 12.0 + 240.0 - 12.0,"close must stay inside the popup");
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This assertion intentionally checks outer popup containment; exact right padding is not its contract. Separate assertions check title/control separation. (reviewed at 5e660e8)
No correctness bugs found. The control order inside the right-to-left layout matches the old order, and Label::truncate() is already used elsewhere in the crate. Confidence: high.
Security
None found.
Performance
None found. The change adds no per-frame allocations beyond what the old code already did.
Quality
Header controls are now top-aligned, not vertically centred against the two-line title block as they were under ui.horizontal. Other header rows in the crate use right_to_left(Align::Center). Please check the "after" screenshot against the old placement. Inline comment posted on mapview.rs:2848. Confidence: medium (not rendered).
The close must stay inside assertion is 12px looser than its message says, and it hard-codes the 240 width. Inline comment posted on smoke.rs:2947. Confidence: medium.
Nits, grouped:
The title tooltip shows even when the title is not truncated, so it repeats visible text. Consider showing it only when clipped. Confidence: low.
The test checks truncation for the title only. The PR says layer names are covered too, but no layer-name assertion exists. The layer label is in the same column, so overlap is unlikely. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
Complies. No new unwrap/panic in non-test code, no new strings needing tl!, no new dependencies, and the docs update is in the right place. The test's unwrap() calls follow the existing style in smoke.rs.
I did not compile or run the tests. Everything above is from reading the diff and the surrounding source.

this check for both result counts, including the navigation controls when count
is greater than one, so the layer label’s own truncation and layout are covered.

Fixed the Linux CI failure in 5e660e8: the popup geometry test now explicitly allows missing-glyph boxes, following the existing Unicode UI test convention. This retains the CJK fixture without requiring a host-installed CJK font; production font handling and the popup UI are unchanged. The focused regression, cargo xtask ci, and pre-commit run --all-files passed locally. Updated CI is being watched.
Skipping the tooltip nit: showing full text on hover even for a short title is harmless and follows existing unconditional hover-text patterns. (reviewed at 5e660e8)

The layer name is set to a long string here, but the test never asserts on it. Only the feature title is checked against the close, previous and next buttons. The PR description says layer names are bounded too, so this is a coverage gap. Consider also finding the layer label (h.query_all_by_label(layer), with layer bound to this string) and asserting layer_rect.max.x < close.min.x. Confidence: medium. This is a test-coverage gap, not a runtime bug.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Both labels use the same bounded column, and the rendered long-layer case was inspected. Keeping the regression focused on title overlap and control interactions. (reviewed at 5e660e8)
Bugs: None found. The new popup header lays out the controls first in a right-to-left row, then gives the title and layer name the remaining width with Label::truncate(). The visual order of the controls matches the old code, and the close, zoom and navigation handlers are unchanged. Confidence: high. I could not compile or run the tests here (no shell), so this rests on reading the code and the repo's existing use of the same egui calls (Label::truncate, Id::unique, on_hover_text(&String), MissingGlyphPolicy).
Security: None found. No new input handling, no new commands, no new dependencies.
Performance: None found. The change adds a nested layout and a per-frame String conversion for the hover text. Both are negligible.
Quality:
The test sets a layer name longer than the header but never asserts on the layer label, so layer-name truncation is untested. Inline comment posted on crates/ui-egui/tests/smoke.rs:2936. Confidence: medium.
The test hard-codes 12.0 (the header's inner margin) and 240.0 (the popup width) in its close-button assertion. If either constant changes, the test breaks for an unrelated reason. Confidence: low.
"›" and "‹" are still untranslated literals while × uses tl!. The lines were moved, so this is pre-existing. The arrows are glyphs rather than words, so this is minor. Confidence: low.
The title and layer always show a hover tooltip, even when they fit. This is harmless but a little noisy. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md: Compliant as far as I can see. No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. No new strings, so no catalog changes are needed. The change touches no assets, no dependencies, and nothing below apps/ that would affect wasm. The docs update matches the behaviour.
