feat(map): Arithmetic Progression and Head/Tail Breaks class methods, Method lists in alphabetical order - #961
Graduated Colors and raster classification gain two class methods, and the Method lists are sorted.
Arithmetic Progression: class widths grow by one step (1, 2, 3… units) and add up to the range, for more detail among the low values. Worked out as a share of the way from the minimum to the maximum, so an infinite range can't overflow (like Geometric Interval).
Head/Tail Breaks (Jiang, 2013): a bound at the mean, then at the mean of the values above it, and so on while that head holds under 40% of the values it was taken from. For a few very large values among many small ones (city sizes, incomes). It sets its own number of classes, at most the number asked, so a field can get fewer classes than asked, as with Standard Deviation. The mean is a running one, so large values can't overflow.
Method lists in alphabetical order (Symbology pane, vector and raster), by the names in the interface language. ClassMethod::ALL and the default (Natural Breaks) are unchanged.
layer.symbology's parameter help, the Python docstring, the thematic-map assistant skill and docs/user-guide/cartography.md list them.
Graduated Colors keeps the classes asked: Renderer::Graduated gains classes (#[serde(default)]), as raster Classify already has. Head/Tail Breaks and Standard Deviation can find fewer classes than asked; the Method list and the Classes count used to re-class from the classes found, so the count dropped for good. They now use Renderer::classes_asked() (the stored count, or the number of breaks for a project saved before it).
Compatibility (this touches the data model, see CONTRIBUTING's "coordinate first"): two variants are added to ClassMethod and a classes field to Renderer::Graduated, both serialized in .rgis. Existing projects and command parameters are unchanged and read as before (classes defaults to 0, meaning as many as there are breaks). An earlier RustGIS ignores classes, but can't open a project saved with one of the new methods.
The new labels ("Arithmetic Progression", "Head/Tail Breaks") aren't in the i18n catalogs yet, per AGENTS.md.
Testing
cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy -D warnings, tests, layers) passes on Rust 1.99.
New tests arithmetic_progression_widths_grow_by_one_step and head_tail_breaks_follow_the_heavy_tail (known bounds, a power law reaching the classes asked, evenly spread values stopping at one split, values near f64::MAX). close_values_keep_their_classes and every_method_is_listed_named_and_read_back cover the new variants through ClassMethod::ALL.
graduated_keeps_the_classes_asked: Head/Tail asked for 5 on evenly spread values finds 2 and keeps 5, through a save and reload; manual bounds ask for as many as they make; a project without classes asks for as many as it has.
ui_shot: Countries by pop_est, Head/Tail Breaks asked for 8 finds 5 and the Classes count stays 8; switching to Quantile then gives 8 classes (it gave 5 before).
ui_shot: the World Atlas sample's Countries by pop_est with Head/Tail Breaks, Method list open in alphabetical order, 5 classes with China and India alone in the top one.
Added Arithmetic Progression and Head/Tail Breaks as classification methods for graduated colors and raster symbology.
Arithmetic Progression creates classes with progressively wider intervals. Head/Tail Breaks repeatedly splits values above the mean when they make up less than 40% of the current set, up to the requested maximum class count.
Classification method menus are now alphabetized. The graduated menu includes Manual classification; the raster menu does not.
The requested class count is preserved when changing graduated classification methods.
Documentation
Updated the user guide and method descriptions with the new options and their behavior.
… the Method lists in alphabetical order
Arithmetic Progression makes class widths grow by one step (1, 2, 3... units),
for more detail among the low values. Head/Tail Breaks splits at the mean, then
at the mean of the values above it, while those stay under 40% of the values
they were taken from: for a few very large values among many small ones. It sets
its own number of classes, at most the number asked.
Both apply to Graduated Colors and raster classification. The Method lists show
the methods in alphabetical order of their names in the interface language.

Summary
Implement methods and class counts crates/map/src/symbology.rs, crates/map/src/qgis/renderer.rs, crates/map/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/layout.rs
ClassMethod adds arithmetic progression and head/tail breaks, with labels, aliases, and bound calculations. Graduated renderers store the requested class count and use break-count fallbacks when needed. Tests and fixtures cover the methods and class-count behavior.
Graduated and raster menus sort methods by translated labels. The graduated menu retains Manual; the raster menu excludes it. Graduated controls use the requested class count.
opengeos/RustGIS#748: The issue requests end-to-end testing of cartography features and saved, reopened projects; this change adds classification methods and serializes the graduated class count.

Bugs (low severity, confidence: moderate). The running mean m + (v - m) / (i + 1) can overflow when a slice mixes large values of opposite sign. For example, [-1.7e308, 1.7e308, 1.7e308]: v - m becomes inf, then inf + -inf gives NaN. partition_point(|x| *x <= NaN) returns 0, so the loop breaks and Head/Tail returns just [max], a single class. Nothing panics, but the result is wrong for the input the comment says is safe. The fix is to scale by the largest magnitude, as StandardDeviation already does, so the sum can't overflow. Guard the case where that scale is 0, since a sub-slice of zeros would otherwise divide by zero. Also add a regression test with opposite-sign values near f64::MAX, because the current tests only use positive values.

Quality (nit, confidence: high).methods_by_name(true) and methods_by_name(false) pass a bare bool, so the call sites don't say what the flag means. A name such as with_manual on the parameter, or two small helpers, would make the calls read clearly. Also, the doc comment says "in alphabetical order of their names in the interface language". That is accurate because the sort key is t_raw, so it is worth keeping.
Head/Tail running mean can overflow when a slice mixes large values of opposite sign. The mean becomes NaN, so the method returns a single class instead of panicking. Low severity. Inline comment posted at crates/map/src/symbology.rs:1508. Confidence: moderate.
No other correctness problems found. I checked the break logic, the termination of the head/tail loop, the k clamps (1..12 for graduated, 1..32 for raster), the final bound closed at hi, and the from_name round-trip for each Debug and label name. The existing tests' expected values match the code.
Security
None found. There is no I/O or untrusted parsing beyond the existing from_name lowercasing.
Performance
None found. Head/Tail shrinks the slice geometrically, so total work is O(n). The method sort in the pane runs only when the combo box is open, over 8 items.
Quality
methods_by_name(bool) call sites are unclear about what the flag means. Nit. Inline comment at crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:3758. Confidence: high.
docs/user-guide/cartography.md:26 is a much longer line than its neighbours, so the wrapping is uneven. Nit. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md
Compliant. Labels go through tl! at the call sites, the new strings are not added to the catalogs (as allowed), no dialogs are added, and the new code is in L2 with no egui dependency. The hostile-input rules are followed: get/partition_point, no indexing, no unwrap. Regression tests cover the new variants. I did not run cargo xtask ci, since this review had no build tooling.

…posite signs
The mean is worked out on values scaled by the largest magnitude, as Standard
Deviation does. The Method list helper takes no flag (the raster list leaves
Manual out where it is shown), and the cartography paragraph is rewrapped.

Thanks for the reviews. Fixed in the latest commit:
Head/Tail Breaks' mean is now worked out on values scaled by the largest magnitude (as Standard Deviation does), so large values of opposite signs no longer overflow. Both inputs from the reviews are in head_tail_breaks_follow_the_heavy_tail.
methods_by_name() takes no flag; the raster list filters out Manual where it is shown.

Switching method shrinks the class count for good (Head/Tail Breaks makes it visible).Renderer::Graduated doesn't keep the requested class count, so breaks.len() is passed back as classes here, and the Classes drag value at line 3657 shows breaks.len() too. Head/Tail Breaks can return fewer classes than asked (e.g. 2 for a skewed field), so: Natural Breaks with 6 classes → Head/Tail (2 classes) → Natural Breaks now gives 2 classes, not 6. Dragging Classes up while Head/Tail is selected also appears to do nothing, because the method caps the count again.
The raster side already avoids this: RasterRenderer::Classify stores the classes asked for alongside breaks (crates/map/src/raster.rs:489), and panes.rs:5361 uses it. The vector renderer should do the same, e.g. a #[serde(default)] classes: usize on Renderer::Graduated set from the requested k in graduated/graduated_by, read here and at line 3657. That touches the serialized .rgis shape, so it needs a compatibility check. Confidence: high that the behaviour happens; medium on whether the maintainer wants the fix in this PR.
Reviewed the 6-file diff against the repository's AGENTS.md: the never-crash rules, the i18n rules, and the test and compatibility notes. Checked the new class_breaks arms, head_tail, from_name, the methods_by_name sort, and the callers of class_breaks, ClassMethod::ALL and from_name. Also read the new unit tests and traced their expected values by hand.
Bugs
Class count shrinks when the method changes (medium–high confidence, posted inline at crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:3647).Renderer::Graduated doesn't store the requested class count. The method combo and the Classes drag value both use breaks.len(), so Head/Tail Breaks (which can return fewer classes) permanently lowers the count, and the drag value can't raise it while Head/Tail is selected. The raster Classify variant already stores classes for this reason.
Security
Nothing found.
Performance
Nothing significant. methods_by_name() runs only while a combo is open. head_tail shrinks its slice geometrically, so it is linear in the sample size.
Quality
Nit (low):class_breaks uses k * (k + 1) and i * (i + 1) unchecked. Every caller clamps k (graduated to 1..=12, raster to 1..=32), so there is no crash today, but class_breaks is pub. A saturating_mul would keep it safe regardless of callers.
Nit (low):head_tail (symbology.rs around line 1513) hides the tail > 0 check inside a filter. Splitting it into its own guard would read more clearly.
Nit (low):methods_by_name sorts by lowercased code points, not locale collation, so accented names may sort oddly in some languages. Acceptable for now.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic, or indexing in the new non-test code. Hostile inputs (k, infinite or huge ranges, opposite-sign extremes) are covered by the new tests.
Labels use tl!, and sorting uses t_raw (the logical form), which is right for RTL display.
The new strings are not in the i18n catalogs, which AGENTS.md permits.
The docs, Python docstring, skill, and layer.symbology help list the new methods. I found no other method-name lists that were missed.
Serialized ClassMethod gains two variants. The PR body already notes that older builds can't open such projects.

…s fewer
Renderer::Graduated gains `classes`, the classes asked for, as raster Classify
has: Head/Tail Breaks and Standard Deviation can find fewer, and the Method
list and the Classes count re-classed from the classes found, so the count
dropped for good. A project from before reads 0, as many as there are breaks
(Renderer::classes_asked).
Also: Arithmetic Progression's step counts saturate, and head_tail's no-split
case is its own guard.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Following the second review: Graduated Colors now keeps the classes asked (Renderer::Graduated gains a classes field, as raster Classify has), so Head/Tail Breaks or Standard Deviation finding fewer no longer lowers the count for good. Since this touches Renderer, which CONTRIBUTING asks to coordinate first, I've noted the compatibility in the description: the field is #[serde(default)], existing projects read as before, and earlier builds ignore it. Happy to split it into its own PR if you prefer.
Also in: Arithmetic Progression's step counts saturate, and head_tail's no-split case is its own guard. cargo xtask ci passes on Rust 1.99.
I found no correctness, security, or performance problems. The findings below are nits, and I could not compile or run the tests (no build tools in this session), so the Rust side is verified by reading only.
Bugs
None found. I traced class_breaks, head_tail, the Arithmetic Progression arm, classes_asked, graduated/graduated_manual, and the Graduated pane arm. Checked: bounds stay strictly increasing and never exceed k classes; as_f64 filters non-finite values, so the clamp(lo, hi) calls can't panic; hi/lo overflow is handled by the scaling. Confidence: high.
Security
None found. No new input paths beyond the existing method name, which is matched through from_name. Confidence: high.
Performance
None significant. head_tail is O(n·k) with k ≤ 12. methods_by_name() runs inside the show_ui closure, so it only allocates while the menu is open. Confidence: high.
Quality
Nit: docs/user-guide/cartography.md:31 is about 120 characters, and the paragraph wraps near 100 elsewhere. Inline suggestion posted. Confidence: high.
Nit: methods_by_name() (panes.rs:3759) has no test. Its alphabetical order depends on translated labels via t_raw, so a small test would guard it. Confidence: medium.
Note: for Head/Tail and Standard Deviation, the Classes control shows the count asked (for example 5) while the legend may show fewer. This matches the stated design, but nothing in the UI signals the difference. Confidence: medium.
AGENTS.md
Compliant on what I checked. Non-test code has no unwrap/panic, and new labels go through tl!. The catalogs are left untouched, as the guide allows. Docs and the thematic-map skill are updated. Layering is unchanged.
Not updated: ROADMAP.md:214 still lists the older graduated-colour methods. That file isn't in the diff, so I did not comment on it inline. Confidence: medium.
