refactor(labels): one note under the label class SQL, the first thing that decides - #967
The last item of #858, step 3: the notes under the SQL Query in the Labeling pane's Content tab become one compact note. Up to three notes used to stack there; now only the first that applies shows:
Labels off for the layer: "Labels are off for this layer: the clause applies once they are on."
The chosen class hidden: "This class is hidden, so it labels nothing." with Show labels.
Other classes on the layer: "Each class labels the features its own clause matches…"
With one visible class and labels on, there is no note. The sentences are the catalog's existing ones, so no new strings. Each note stays one whole sentence rather than joined parts, since translated sentences joined together would read in the wrong order right to left.
Testing
cargo xtask ci.
the_sql_tab_says_what_else_decides_the_labels now checks the order: labels off alone (no Show labels, no rule), then the hidden note alone, then the rule once Show labels shows Default again.
Manual: each state on Cities (labels off, one class, an extra class, Default hidden, Show labels, hidden with labels off, an extra class hidden, and Undo after Show labels).
Status notes now reflect the current label visibility state: turning off layer labels shows only the layer-label note, while hiding the selected class shows a note with a “Show labels” action.
When labels are on and the selected class is visible, the interface displays the class-clause note if other classes are present.
… that decides
Labels off, then a hidden class, then the other classes: only the first that applies shows. Each note stays one whole sentence, so it reads in order right to left. Closesopengeos#858.
The SQL pane now displays a status note based on whether labels are enabled, whether the selected class is visible, and whether other classes exist. The test checks the note and action across these states.

Summary
Select the SQL status note crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs
The SQL pane uses ordered conditions to show one status note. The test checks that the other-classes note appears after labels are enabled and the hidden selected class is shown.

Explanation
The stated objective for this PR is step 3 of #858: replace the stacked notes under SQL with one compact note. The diff in crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs (sql function) changes three independent if blocks into an if / else if / else if chain. Precedence: (1) labels off shows only 'Labels are off for this layer: the clause applies once they are on.'; (2) else, a hidden class shows 'This class is hidden, so it labels nothing.' with the 'Show labels' action; (3) else, when other classes exist, the 'Each class labels the features its own clause matches...' note shows. At most one note appears. With labels on, the class visible, and no other classes, no note appears. The sentences are existing catalog strings, and each note stays one whole sentence, as the PR description requires. The test the_sql_tab_says_what_else_decides_the_labels is updated to check the order: labels off alone, then the hidden note alone, then the rule after Show labels restores Default. Steps 1, 2, and 4 of #858 (ribbon class, class header, map settings out of the pane) are outside this PR's stated scope and are not assessed here.

Explanation
The reviewed change set, as summarized and as inspected for crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs (+15/-7 lines), contains only changes to the SQL note logic and its test. The note precedence and the test ordering both serve step 3 of #858. No unrelated behavior, refactoring, or other files were identified in the evidence. The file list of the whole PR was not separately enumerated; the conclusion relies on the whole-PR summary and the labelpane.rs diff.

A rabbit reads the SQL note with care, First checks if labels are on or there. If the chosen class is hidden from view, A “Show labels” action comes through. Once shown, the class note joins the queue.

Nit: this one assert covers two claims with a shared message, so a failure says "one note" without saying which note leaked. Splitting it names the failing state:

Done in 4632f22: one claim per assert, each saying which note leaked. I gave the next step's assert its own message too ("no rule note while Default is hidden"), so no "one note" message is left.
I read the full diff (one file, crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs), the surrounding sql() and test code, and checked that the tested commands and strings exist. I could not run the test suite or cargo xtask ci because I have no shell here, so the findings below rest on reading the code.
Bugs
None found. The if / else if / else if chain shows one note at a time in the order the PR describes: labels off, then hidden class (with "Show labels"), then other classes. The extra-classes condition is unchanged, so the rule note still shows only when another class exists and nothing above it applies. Confidence: high.
Security
None. No new input handling, no new commands.
Performance
None. The change only alters which ui.label calls run.
Quality
Behaviour change to be aware of (intentional per the PR body, so not a defect): with labels off, the "Each class labels the features…" note no longer appears even when other classes exist. The labels-off note doesn't mention that behaviour, so a user who turns labels off sees less. Confidence: medium that this is worth documenting, low that it's wrong.
Test nit, posted inline on labelpane.rs:1130: one assert combines two checks under a single "one note" message, so a failure doesn't say which note leaked. Suggested split is in the comment. Confidence: high (style only).
AGENTS.md
Compliant. No unwrap/expect/panic is added to non-test code (the test's existing unwrap() calls follow the file's pattern). All user-visible strings are wrapped in tl! and reuse existing catalog entries, so no new strings are needed. No layering change.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 9285e05 to PR head 4c46fdd).
GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit. Newer commits from the fork aren't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).
I reviewed the one-file diff (crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs, +15/−7) and its test changes. I found no bugs, security issues, or performance problems. No inline comments were needed.
Bugs
None found. The if / else if chain reads correctly. Each state shows at most one note, and the precedence is labels off, then hidden class, then other classes. The test covers the precedence case (labels off with a hidden class and an extra class, which shows only the labels-off note).
Security
None found. The diff adds no input handling or I/O.
Performance
None found. The change removes two conditionals' worth of label work and adds no new computation.
Quality
Behaviour change, intentional per the PR: with labels off and the chosen class hidden, the Show labels button is no longer shown, so a user has to enable labels before they can see the hidden-class note. This matches the PR's stated design. Confidence: high that it is intended, low that it is a problem.
Nit (no action needed): the new block comment at labelpane.rs:474-476 is wordy ("One note, about what decides the labels first"). It is clear enough as written.
AGENTS.md
Compliant. All three strings already exist in every crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/*.tsv catalog, so no new catalog entries are needed. They are wrapped in tl!. The test uses unwrap() the same way existing tests in that module do, which is allowed. No unsafe, no new dependencies.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Check the visible class count before showing the multi-class note.
When labels are enabled and the selected class is visible, !labels.classes.is_empty() does not prove that another class is visible. A hidden class, or the selected named class itself, keeps this condition true. The SQL note can therefore appear when only one class is visible. Count visible classes, including Default, and show this note only when more than one is visible. The PR objective states that no note appears with only one visible class.
