feat(analysis): add an Intersect overlay tool - #980
Adds Intersect (intersect), the first of the overlay tools in #959. It answers "which parcels are in the floodplain, and by how much", which Clip (drops the floodplain's attributes) and Spatial Join (keeps whole parcels) can't.
For each input feature and each overlay polygon it overlaps, one feature for the overlapping part, with the input's attributes followed by the overlay's. Order is input order, then overlay order.
Input can be points, lines or polygons and keeps its geometry type; the overlay must be polygons. An overlay polygon's edge counts as inside, as for Clip and as GEOS has it: a point on the edge and a stretch of road along it are kept; polygons that only share an edge or a corner give nothing.
An overlay field whose name the input already has gets a suffix (id_2), as Spatial Join does. The output keeps the input's source CRS for export.
Selections in both layers are honoured. Overlapping features within one layer aren't split against each other (documented).
It overlays in Web Mercator with geo's boolean operations, as Clip and Erase do, so their results line up.
Ribbon. Intersect serves the overlay step of an analysis ("which parcels are in the floodplain, with both sets of attributes"), so it goes on the Analyze tab, whose purpose is turning existing data into new results. It sits in the Tools gallery right after Clip and Erase, the other overlay tools, with an icon drawn in code: two overlapping squares, only their shared part filled. Clicking it opens the Tools pane at Intersect's form (Input Features, Overlay Features, Output Name), as the other gallery tools do. It doesn't run immediately and isn't a split button. It is also under Analysis › Overlay in the Tools pane and in Feature Analysis. At 1366 px wide the gallery already scrolled before this change; Intersect pushes one more tool behind its scroll arrow, and Buffer through Bounding Geometry stay in view. A screenshot of the tab at 1366 px is in a comment below.
Two small refactors make it cheap:
Clip's per-geometry logic is now part_in(g, mask). Clip calls it with the union of its clip layer, Intersect with each overlay polygon. Clip's behaviour is unchanged.
Spatial Join's inline extent grid is now ExtentIndex, so Intersect prunes candidates the same way. The thresholds (no grid up to 16 features or past a million cell references) and the Closest search's starting reach are unchanged.
Also updated: the user guide (table, count, an Intersect section), ROADMAP.md, GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md, README, the comparison page and the assistant's geoprocessing skill.
Testing
cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, all tests, layers), and cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web builds.
GEOS reference corpus (test(analysis): check overlay, selection and join tools against GEOS #916): three new cases from Shapely/GEOS, intersect polygons, lines and points against the zones (holes, a multipart parcel, a clockwise ring, shared edges and corners, overlapping zones). A new road, r7, runs along a zone's edge and on into another zone; Clip, Select By Location and Spatial Join agree with GEOS on it too. The checker now accepts a key of several fields (["id", "id_2"], written P1|Z1). Regenerating left every other expected file byte-identical.
Unit tests: the extent index looks only at its own cells for a query far larger than the layer;
attributes and the id_2 suffix with a touching-only zone left out; points in two overlapping polygons; selections in both layers (one run where they leave nothing, one where they leave one part); refused overlay and table inputs; new junk parameters in hostile_params_never_panic.
ui_shot of the Analyze tab with the Intersect form open (gallery icon and parameters).
Related issue
Part of #959 (Identity and Union follow, then Near).
Added the Intersect tool to create portions of input features within overlay polygons, retaining attributes from both layers. It is available in the analysis tools gallery and geoprocessing workflows.
Documentation
Updated the user guide with Intersect’s inputs, outputs, boundary behavior, selection handling, and an example. The guide now lists 22 built-in geoprocessing tools, including Zonal Statistics.
Updated feature comparisons to reflect Intersect’s availability.
Intersect splits input features (points, lines or polygons) by the
polygons of an overlay layer: one feature per part inside an overlay
polygon, with the input's attributes followed by the overlay's (a taken
name gets a suffix). An overlay edge counts as inside, as for Clip.
Selections in both layers are honoured.
Clip's per-geometry logic becomes part_in, shared with Intersect, and
Spatial Join's extent grid becomes ExtentIndex, so Intersect prunes
candidates the same way. The GEOS reference corpus gains intersect
cases, a road along a zone's edge, and keys of several fields.
Part of opengeos#959.

Nit (medium confidence):TOOLS in crates/analysis/src/tools.rs has 22 ToolSpec entries after this PR (the 21st is intersect, and the list has 21 before it). The count here says 21, and it was already one below the old TOOLS count of 21 before this change, so the sentence may have been stale before this PR. Please check the table below against TOOLS and make the count match.

Fixed in a3b0341. You're right: main already had 21 tools and the guide said 20 because Zonal Statistics (zonalStats, Analysis › Raster) was missing from the table. The guide now says 22 and lists it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (low, ~60%):part_in(g, &z.poly) is called once per candidate zone, so for each input feature the input geometry is re-projected to Web Mercator (to_multipolygon(g) for polygons, lonlat_to_merc per point for points) once for every zone it meets. A feature in several zones, or a large polygon in a dense overlay, repeats that work. Converting the input once per feature and passing the Mercator form to each zone would avoid it. That's a small restructure rather than a one-line fix, so I've not included a suggestion block.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Leaving this one as is. Projecting is one pass over the vertices, while each zone's intersection or clip on the same vertices costs more than that pass, so converting once per feature would save a small fraction of the per-zone work. It would also mean a second set of entry points beside part_in, which Clip shares. If profiling a dense overlay shows it matters, it is a contained change.
I read the full diff and the surrounding code in tools.rs, reference.rs, and Extent. I could not compile or run the tests, since I had no shell, so the clippy, wasm, and cargo xtask ci gates are unverified here.
Bugs
No confirmed bugs. I checked that Extent::intersects is inclusive, so points on an overlay's bounding edge are still tested, and that the grid prefilter is a superset under coordinate clamping. The ExtentIndex extraction matches the old spatial-join logic, and Clip's behaviour is unchanged. Confidence: high.
Docs tool count (docs/user-guide/analysis.md:81): TOOLS has 22 entries after this PR, and it had 21 before. The docs say 21, so they should say 22. Confidence: medium-high (~75%). Correction to my inline comment on this line: its wording is muddled, so please use this count instead.
Security
No findings. The change does no file or network I/O, and output names go through out_name.
Performance
intersect calls part_in(g, &z.poly) once per candidate zone, so each input geometry is re-projected to Web Mercator once per zone it meets (tools.rs:817). Confidence: ~60%. Inline comment posted, with no suggestion block because the fix is a restructure.
Quality
let (ov, zones) = zones(inp, p)?; (tools.rs:806) shadows the zones function. It compiles but reads poorly. Rename one of them. Confidence: high.
In reference.rs:193, the selection branch still hard-codes "id", while the layer branch now uses key_fields. The two paths now disagree on the key. Confidence: ~50%.
AGENTS.md
New non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe. Indexing uses get. Junk-parameter cases are added to hostile_params_never_panic.
Icons are drawn in code, and no new assets are added.
Ribbon placement is stated in the PR description.
The new strings are not wrapped in tl!, which matches the existing analysis tool specs.
Not verified here: the clippy, wasm, and cargo xtask ci gates, and the GEOS-generated expected files.

- The extent index looks only at the cells over its own extent: a
feature far larger than the indexed layer probed cells up to the
clamp, past the grid's.
- The user guide counts 22 built-in tools and lists Zonal Statistics,
which was missing; the Intersect example reads better.
- overlay_zones no longer shares its name with the local it returns,
and the reference checker keys selections as it keys layers.

Bugs (confidence: medium, about 40%): each overlay feature's polygon is used as is. Clip and Erase first run union_all over the layer, but here a single overlay feature with overlapping parts, or a self-intersecting ring, goes straight into geo's boolean operations, which assume valid input. The result could then miss or duplicate parts. The doc comment on part_in ("oriented as union_all leaves them") also doesn't match what this line does now.
Suggested fix, which makes the zone match the doc comment and what Clip uses:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Confirmed and fixed in #982 (6708f9e), since this PR merged first. A test with one overlay feature of two overlapping squares (x 0–2 and 1–3) showed the overlap's area going missing: the part came out as x 0–1 and 2–3. Unioning every overlay polygon broke a point exactly on a shared edge in the GEOS corpus (the union nudges edges by a rounding error), so only a feature of several parts is unioned; a single polygon is only oriented, as before.
I read the full diff, the staged AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code in tools.rs, convert.rs, geom/lib.rs, data/lib.rs, and the docs. The ExtentIndex extraction from spatial_join looks behaviour-preserving, and the grid's pruning is sound (the query is clamped to the grid and the key function is shared). The docs' tool count of 22 is correct once Intersect is added.
Bugs
Overlay zones aren't unioned (crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:771). Clip and Erase union their overlay layer first; Intersect hands each overlay feature's raw polygon to geo's boolean operations. Overlapping parts or a self-intersecting ring within one feature could drop or duplicate output. The part_in doc comment also says the mask is oriented "as union_all leaves them", which isn't true for this path. Confidence: medium, about 40%. Posted as an inline comment with a one-line union_all suggestion.
Performance
intersect calls part_in, which re-projects the input geometry to Web Mercator for every candidate zone (tools.rs:817). Converting once per input feature would avoid that. Confidence: high that it's redundant work, low that it matters much, since the boolean op dominates. Nit.
Quality
reference.rs: key_fields silently falls back to "id" for non-string key values, and drops non-string entries from a key array. An empty key array would key every row as "". Nit, confidence: medium. No test exercises it.
intersect's zone-extent prefilter and candidates both check extents. The duplication is harmless but worth a comment if it stays. Nit.
AGENTS.md
Ribbon guidelines (docs/contributing.md#ribbon-guidelines) ask a ribbon PR to state the task, tab and group, how it fits the tab's purpose, whether the control runs immediately or opens a form, and a 1366 px screenshot. The PR body gives placement and a ui_shot but not the purpose fit, the action type, or a screenshot URL from opengeos/rustgis-assets. Confidence: medium.
No unwrap/panic in non-test code, no unsafe, tl! isn't needed for ToolSpec labels that match the existing tools, icons are drawn in code, and the hostile-params test was extended. Layering and wasm are unaffected. Nothing else to flag.
I did not build or run the tests; this review is by reading only.

Summary
Adds Intersect (
intersect), the first of the overlay tools in #959. It answers "which parcels are in the floodplain, and by how much", which Clip (drops the floodplain's attributes) and Spatial Join (keeps whole parcels) can't.id_2), as Spatial Join does. The output keeps the input's source CRS for export.Ribbon.
Two small refactors make it cheap:
part_in(g, mask). Clip calls it with the union of its clip layer, Intersect with each overlay polygon. Clip's behaviour is unchanged.ExtentIndex, so Intersect prunes candidates the same way.
Testing
cargo xtask cipasses (fmt, clippy, all tests, layers), andcargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-webbuilds.r7, runs along a zone's edge and on into another zone; Clip, Select By Location and Spatial Join agree with GEOS on it too. The checker now accepts a key of several fields (["id", "id_2"], writtenP1|Z1). Regenerating left every other expected file byte-identical.attributes and the
id_2suffix with a touching-only zone left out; points in two overlapping polygons; selections in both layers (one run where they leave nothing, one where they leave one part); refused overlay and table inputs; new junk parameters inhostile_params_never_panic.ui_shotof the Analyze tab with the Intersect form open (gallery icon and parameters).Related issue
