We've shown that PLUG's systems chug along just fine with the old server powered off. We should fully decommission it so we're not paying for it's block storage or IP address.
There is a bunch of stuff in home directories that may still be valuable. Rather than trying to contact everyone before hand, we should just archive everything and deal with it later. Probably something like:
- Create a tarball of the contents of each home directory with non-trivial content.
- Create a file listing for each of the tarballs.
- Upload tarballs and file listings to the PLUG S3 bucket.
- Contact the owners to see if they are interested in the contents. Provide a timed download link for those who are.
- Migrate tarballs in S3 to glacier storage to minimise costs.
Together with the borg backups, this should be sufficient to finally delete the machine.
