Fail closed on Chromium sandbox launch failure - #459
Review regressions: 6 passed; Ruff, formatting, workflow validation, lock inventory, both uv lock checks, and git diff --check passed.
Local root and docs universal-lock pip-audit: no known vulnerabilities. The docs audit skips unpublished/local Reflex packages unavailable on PyPI.
Hosted head de0801a: Test (Rust + Python + JS), Dependency security audit, Docs, changelog, and CodSpeed passed. Two unrelated Matplotlib gallery shards were still installing system dependencies with no failures reported.
Follow-up head 5d107fb is awaiting maintainer approval for GitHub Actions to run on this fork PR.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Security
Image exports and persistent browser sessions now fail closed when Chromium cannot start with its sandbox enabled; they no longer retry without it. Disabling the sandbox requires an explicit opt-in and should be limited to trusted HTML.
Automated dependency audits now cover Python, Rust, npm, and Bun dependencies, including documentation and benchmark environments. Checks verify that tracked lockfiles are accounted for, run on a schedule, for relevant pull requests, or on request, and apply severity thresholds by ecosystem.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Chromium exports now stop after sandboxed launch failures. Repository checks verify tracked dependency lockfiles and run Python, Rust, npm, and Bun audits through local and automated entry points. Repository smoke scripts use explicit sandbox settings for controlled HTML.
PNG export and persistent browser sessions no longer retry without the sandbox after sandboxed launch failures. Tests and documentation describe the explicit sandbox=False option and trusted-HTML restriction.
The Reflex websocket smoke uses sandboxing by default and accepts --no-sandbox. Repository smoke and benchmark code opts out for controlled HTML. The benchmark workflow timeout comment describes browser setup and execution.

Summary
Lock inventory and local security checks scripts/verify_dependency_lock_inventory.py, scripts/verify_local.py, Makefile, tests/test_verify_local.py
The verifier compares Git-tracked lockfiles with the expected inventory. Local checks add inventory verification, and check-security now combines static checks with the dependency audit target.
The audit script checks required tools, verifies the lock inventory, and runs audits for configured Python, Rust, npm, and Bun dependencies. Tests cover lockfile recognition and audit command selection.
Automated audit workflow and policy .github/workflows/security-audit.yml, SECURITY.md, spec/process/production-readiness.md, spec/process/security-audit-2026-07-06.md, news/459.breaking.md
The workflow runs for relevant pull requests, weekly, and on manual dispatch. It installs audit tools and invokes the shared target. Policy and process documentation describe audit coverage and thresholds.
Supporting lock and benchmark updates benchmarks/requirements-ci.in, docs/app/reflex.lock/package.json, tests/test_benchmark_requirements.py
The benchmark lock compile command adds --upgrade, and the Vite devDependency changes to 8.3.3. A test checks that the workflow benchmark explicitly disables the sandbox.

reflex-dev/xy#535: Adds a Rust dependency covered by this PR’s Rust lockfile audit.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review c427e
This change makes Chromium PNG export fail closed and adds a shared dependency-audit gate. The audit gate has two coverage gaps: it does not link inventoried locks to audit commands, and it may skip platform-specific Python packages. These are worth addressing but do not block merge.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Fail closed on Chromium sandbox launch failure" matches the main change. The PR stops Chromium from retrying without the sandbox after a sandboxed launch fails, in both the one-shot PNG export path and persistent browser sessions. The title is short and specific. The changeset also includes secondary work (dependency-audit workflow, lockfile inventory checks, Reflex smoke test sandbox default, docs), but the title does not need to cover those details.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The changes satisfy the coding requirements in #449. html_to_png and _browser_session fail closed and do not retry with --no-sandbox. Sandboxed launch errors provide explicit sandbox=False guidance. Tests verify one sandboxed launch and fail-closed behavior. spec/api/export.md and SECURITY.md document the enforced behavior and trusted-content isolation. The scheduled workflow audits Python, Rust, npm, and Bun locks with documented thresholds and exceptions. The lock inventory check detects missing or unexpected lockfiles. make check-security exposes the local checks. The audit record labels point-in-time results as historical evidence.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain within #449. Export code and tests implement the sandbox contract. API, security, production-readiness, and release documentation describe that contract. Workflow, inventory, local-check, audit, lockfile, and smoke-script changes support the dependency-scanning or sandbox objectives. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Summary
Chromium exports now stop when a sandboxed launch fails instead of retrying without the sandbox.
Chromium exports and sessions stop when sandbox startup fails.
Dependency checks scan active lockfiles on a schedule and relevant changes.
No new actionable issues were found. The three earlier, unnumbered findings are fixed: the inventory uses tracked files, Rust audits omit the unsupported flag, and CI starts the audit with python3.
_return_type_name returns None for every exception. An export with an unresolvable return annotation is then reported only as "unclassified", which hides the real cause. validate_public_api_inventory still fails, so the checker does not pass silently. Surfacing the original exception would shorten diagnosis.

Hoist the Selection dunder alias map next to its discovery constant.
SPECIAL_PUBLIC_SELECTION_METHODS at Line 55 decides which dunders enter the inventory. selection_aliases at Line 373 decides how each dunder is matched in the documentation. The two lists must stay in agreement. If a second dunder joins the public Selection surface and only Line 55 is updated, validate_docs_inventory demands a literal `__name__` token and reports a missing document entry even when the documentation uses the idiomatic form.
Define the alias map as a module constant beside Line 55 and derive the special-method set from its keys.
Separately, note that _has_doc_reference matches bare substrings such as rows(. An incidental mention in the documentation satisfies the check. The consequence is missed drift, not a false failure.

The loop reads only cls.__dict__. Inherited public methods are not discovered. Today Chart and Selection define their public methods locally, so the inventory is complete. If either class later gains a base class that carries public methods, the inventory under-reports the surface. validate_docs_inventory then stops requiring documentation for those methods, which defeats the drift check.
Consider walking the MRO and excluding object.

The fake modules do not isolate this test from the real package.
fake is named "xy". build_public_api_inventory runs importlib.import_module("._figure", pkg.__name__) at scripts/check_public_api.py Line 298, so it imports the real xy._figure and reflects the real Selection. validate_declarative_api_contract then calls validate_docs_inventory(inventory) at Line 441 with the default CHART_METHOD_DOC and SELECTION_METHOD_DOC paths, so it reads the real documentation files.
The effect: test_public_api_checker_accepts_declarative_api_contract asserts errors == [], and that assertion depends on real Selection methods and real documentation content. It passes now only because the fake Chart.figure and Chart.html names also appear in docs/api-reference/figure-methods.md. If a public method is added to the real Selection without documentation, this fixture-based test fails with a Selection error that names neither the fixture nor the real cause.
Accept the Selection source and the documentation paths as parameters of build_public_api_inventory and validate_declarative_api_contract, then inject fakes here.

selection_methods includes __len__, and the temporary document contains len(selection). No assertion covers that pairing. If the selection_aliases mapping in validate_docs_inventory were removed, __len__ would fall through to _has_doc_reference, none of whose tokens appear in the written text, and an error would be reported. Every current assertion would still pass, because none mentions __len__. Add the negative assertion to pin the alias behavior.

Deriving the expected inventory from the code under test removes the removal signal.
MARK_FACTORIES, CHART_FACTORIES, CHROME_FACTORIES, SUPPORT_FACTORIES, and CHART_READOUTS now come from reflection over components.__all__ and the Chart class. The previous hard-coded lists acted as an independent expectation.
Concrete consequence: if a factory is dropped from components.__all__, it also disappears from the derived tuple. test_public_factories_are_typed_root_exports and test_composition_alpha_contract_is_explicitly_exported then iterate fewer names and still pass. validate_public_api_inventory in scripts/check_public_api.py does not close this gap, because it only checks that each listed export is classified.
Keep one independent expectation. A minimum-count assertion, or an explicit frozen set of names that must always be present, restores the signal without reintroducing full hard-coded lists.

The fail-closed direction is correct. I ran it live: with a sandboxed default, to_png and to_image with the chromium engine no longer retry with --no-sandbox. sandbox=False still works, and native export still works. The spec, SECURITY.md and audit-note updates match the code. Changes needed before merge:
Add a news fragment.python/xy/export.py changes, and main now has news/ plus the changelog workflow that requires one. Merge main (it merges cleanly) and add news/459.breaking.md (or .bugfix.md). Environments that used to export silently now raise, so say that and name sandbox=False.
Fix ruff format on scripts/verify_dependency_lock_inventory.py (inline comment).
Make the sandbox-failure error actionable: name the sandbox=False opt-out for trusted HTML, on both the html_to_png and _browser_session paths, with a test (inline comment).
Show green CI. No workflow has run on this head. The repo's own CI callers (png_export_smoke.py, test_to_png_full_path under XY_REQUIRE_BROWSER=1) use the sandboxed default. Both fail where the sandbox cannot start, and both pass on main. Opt trusted in-repo callers out explicitly if needed (inline comment).
Optional: run security-audit.yml once through workflow_dispatch on your fork and link the run. It is new and has not executed yet.

Enforce the trusted-HTML boundary before honoring sandbox=False.
html_to_png accepts raw HTML and inserts --no-sandbox whenever the caller passes sandbox=False. No trust check restricts this option to trusted HTML. This can run attacker-controlled scripts in Chromium without Chromium’s process sandbox, removing the isolation required by the documented security contract.
Make the raw-HTML boundary reject unsandboxed launches, and keep the opt-out behind a private, library-controlled trusted-document path. The correction belongs at html_to_png, before constructing the Chromium command.

Bring the benchmark baseline uv.lock files into the lock inventory and audit.
EXCLUDED_PATH_PARTS = frozenset({"launch_baselines"}) removes every tracked path under launch_baselines from the lock inventory. Two committed uv.lock files in that tree are currently excluded:
The security spec says scripts/verify_dependency_lock_inventory.py "fails when a new committed dependency lock is not added to that audit inventory." A new committed lock under launch_baselines/ passes the verifier. The scheduled audit in .github/workflows/security-audit.yml does not read these locks, so vulnerable pins in them are not reported. Their impact is limited to the benchmark harness.

The verifier change enrolls the two baseline locks. Add an audit step for each lock in security-audit.yml. Without that step, the inventory lists the locks but the scheduled audit still does not scan them.

- Around line 279-285: Remove the obsolete “Follow-up pending” claim in the Rust
audit documentation, which says to add cargo audit or cargo deny to CI. Keep the
surrounding description of the Rust dependency tree and its current controls
intact.

System calls cannot be simulated consistently and are left out of the measure. The reported value understates the real cost. Switch to the Walltime instrument to measure them.
The flamegraph wasn't generated: the symbols of the profiling trace could not be resolved, because no information about the language frames was collected.
1 finding could not be posted inline, so cubic included the feedback here instead.

P2: This 20-minute limit still leaves too little worst-case headroom: the four-library group can spend 18 minutes in its six 45-second rows before setup time. Increase the job timeout to cover benchmark and installation time.

Review comments at @scripts/audit_dependencies.py:
- Around line 37-40: Update the dependency audit flow in
scripts/audit_dependencies.py so audits cover platform- and
Python-version-specific packages from both the root and docs locks, rather than
relying only on the packages installed by the Ubuntu `uv sync` and an input-free
`pip-audit`. Use lock-based or per-supported-platform audits while preserving
the existing audit coverage.
Review comments at @scripts/verify_dependency_lock_inventory.py:
- Line 28: Update the audit coverage check around EXPECTED_LOCKFILES so each
lockfile in AUDITED_LOCKFILES is associated with an audit command, and fail when
an inventoried active lockfile has no audit implementation. Keep
FROZEN_EVIDENCE_LOCKFILES distinct from active locks that must be audited.
Review comments at @tests/test_benchmark_requirements.py:
- Around line 28-29: Update the source assertions in the benchmark requirements
test to verify that `engine=xy.Engine.chromium` and `sandbox=False` belong to
the same `to_png` call. Use an AST check or a narrowly scoped fragment around
that call so unrelated code or comments cannot satisfy the assertions.
