Use native factorization for object string categories - #476
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Object arrays containing eligible Python strings can be normalized to fixed-width Unicode and processed by the native factorizer. Unsupported object values retain the Python fallback. The selected array is used for factorization and label extraction.
Changes: Categorical factorization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Object-string eligibility python/xy/channels.py
Bounded probes and dtype-aware thresholds select object arrays for native factorization. Validation normalizes eligible strings and rejects unsupported or NUL-containing values.
Factorization and parity python/xy/channels.py, tests/test_custom_ramps_and_palette.py
The factorization path uses the selected array for native processing and label extraction. Tests check category results, bounded probing, and fallback behavior.

A chart with many rows and one long category can exhaust memory during color resolution. Bound the normalization allocation before merging; strengthen the fallback test to protect its intended behavior.

Docstring Coverage
Docstring coverage is inconclusive: files from earlier reviews still need to be rechecked within the check's analysis limits. Not blocking.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#471] requires a semantics-preserving native path for safe object-backed strings and fallback behavior for unsupported values. python/xy/channels.py validates exact, NUL-free Python strings, uses bounded probe data, normalizes eligible arrays, and routes them through the existing native factorizer. Mixed values, missing values, bytes, string subclasses, and NUL-containing strings remain on the fallback path. The code preserves sorted labels, codes, and counts through the existing remap logic. The added tests verify label-call cardinality, Unicode parity, NUL behavior, bounded probing, and fallback cases. The updated function documentation records the fallback conditions.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The pull request changes only categorical factorization in python/xy/channels.py and adds focused regression tests in tests/test_custom_ramps_and_palette.py. The probe, normalization, factorizer changes, and tests directly implement the requirements in [#471]. No unrelated product behavior is changed.

The current assertions only verify structural properties. len(categories) == len(set(categories)) checks a property already enforced by the implementation, and len(codes) == len(values) does not verify code assignments.
Assert the expected categories and codes for each parameter. Add a str subclass or custom string-like case to verify that the exact-type guard preserves custom label semantics.
Verify each finding against current code. Fix only still-valid issues, skip the
rest with a brief reason, keep changes minimal, and validate.

_use_native_fixed_factorizer to probe object-string eligibility and width via a
validation-only _object_string_width helper, without allocating the full Unicode
array. Pass the resulting normalized item size into the probe so its threshold
behavior is preserved, and only perform full normalization after the native path
is selected; keep fallback factorization from retaining an unnecessary Unicode
copy.
- Around line 386-390: Update the string normalization loop around the visible
type check to return None when any string contains a NUL codepoint, allowing the
existing Python fallback to preserve distinct values such as "a" and "a\x00".
Add a regression test covering these two values and verifying they remain
separate categories with correct labels, codes, and counts.

Changes needed before merge. Details are in the inline comments.
Bound the object→<U{width}> cast. Today one long string in a low-cardinality column forces an N × max-width allocation. A 2M-row column with one 2000-char label gets OOM-killed, while main finishes it in 0.6 s.
Add a news fragment (news/476.performance.md).
Update the spec: close perf-audit backlog item 1, and record the object-string route in rust-engine.md and benchmarks/results.md.
The rest checks out. A differential fuzz over 3000 random object-string arrays matched the old fallback on categories and codes, and the counts matched bincount. A rendered scatter colored by an object column is byte-identical to the Unicode reference. NUL strings and missing or mixed values stay on the fallback.

Blocking: one long string makes this cast allocate N × max-width. The cast uses the widest string in the whole column, so one outlier sets the width for every row. In a low-cardinality column, distinct <= _FACTORIZE_NATIVE_MAX_PROBE_CATEGORIES returns True before the itemsize check runs, so nothing rejects a wide cast. The bounded probe usually misses the outlier too, because it samples only 4096 rows.
Please bound the cast. For example: skip the native path when 4 * width * len(arr) is much larger than the object array (say more than a few × arr.nbytes), or above an absolute byte cap. Then add a regression test that puts one wide outlier in a large low-cardinality column and asserts the result stays on the fallback, or that peak memory stays bounded.

Missing news fragment. This PR changes python/ but adds no fragment under news/. CLAUDE.md requires one for every change under python/, src/ or js/. Please add one with make news NAME=476.performance.md.
Spec drift.spec/ is authoritative per CLAUDE.md, and three places still describe the old behavior:
spec/process/perf-audit-2026-07-22.md § Backlog → High, item 1 ("Object-dtype categorical colors factorize in pure Python") is listed as not implemented. Mark it done, or update it to the routing this PR ships.
spec/design/rust-engine.md: the factorization row and the "Target Rust ownership" text cover only contiguous fixed-width values plus the defensive Python path for mixed objects. Add the exact-str object route, its NUL exclusion, and the width bound requested above.
spec/benchmarks/results.md (the "Fixed-width Unicode, bytes, and boolean color arrays…" paragraph): add object-string columns to the native path and record the measured win. For reference, on my machine 2M rows × 24 labels took 1321 → 509 ms.
Nit (optional).ruff --select C901 complexity for _factorize_categories goes from 5 to 9. You could move the object-string gating (lines 432–453) into one helper, such as _object_strings_for_native(arr) -> Optional[np.ndarray].
Add exact expected labels and codes to the fallback cases.
The missing/mixed path is covered elsewhere, but the existing bytes test uses fixed-width bytes and does not cover object-backed bytes. The current assertions can miss incorrect labels or code remapping.
