Format dates and times in tooltips, in one grammar with the numbers - #521
sselvakumaran wants to merge 13 commits into
Conversation
`xy.tooltip(format={"time": "%b %d, %Y, %H:%M"})` was accepted, shipped on the
wire, and then ignored: the tooltip's value formatter only ever tried the
numeric spec, so a strftime pattern fell through to the raw ISO stamp
(`2026-09-17 10:03:05.264Z`). `fmtTimeSpec` existed but was reachable only
from axis labels. Now one grammar resolves every tooltip value, in nearest
mode, in a shared-axis band, and in the default tooltip:
- A strftime pattern (a `%` followed by one of `YmdHMSbB`) formats a
time-kinded value; anything else stays the numeric spec, so `".0%"` still
means percent and `format={"time": ",.0f"}` still means epoch milliseconds.
An authored format always wins over an inherited one.
- `format=` is keyed by the author's column names, rows are keyed by channel:
a table-backed datetime reaches the row as `x`. Both keys now resolve —
the channel, the short channel name `labels=` documents, then the column
bound to that channel *on the hovered trace*, read from the `sources` map
the payload already carries. Two series binding different columns to y keep
their own formats, and the band title takes the format keyed by the time
column rather than only `"x"`.
- A time value with nothing authored on it no longer reads as an ISO stamp
either. It follows the axis's own `format=` when there is one, so a tooltip
and the ticks beneath it agree, and otherwise the pattern its visible span
reads best in: `Sep 17, 2026` for months, `Sep 17, 10:05` for hours or days,
`10:05:00` for seconds. Each tier is one granularity finer than the axis
labels the same span produces, because a tooltip names one point rather than
an interval, and it sharpens as you zoom. Under a second the ISO stamp stays,
being the only form that carries milliseconds.
- `format=` works on its own. An otherwise-empty tooltip short-circuited to
the default rows before formats were read, so `format=` did nothing unless
it was accompanied by `fields=` or `title=`.
Spec: interaction.md §7.4. Docs: a "Time and Date Values" section in the
tooltips guide, plus the FAQ entry. Tests: tests/test_tooltip_time_format.py —
browser probes driving the real client through each resolution path, including
the reported repro, the per-trace split, and the span ladder.

Two review findings, both reachable from supported charts:
- `aliases` is figure-level and keeps only a column's FIRST binding, so a
column used as x by one trace and y by another resolved to the wrong channel
on the second — and with it the wrong channel-keyed format, the wrong axis
format and the wrong visible span. `sources` already carries the per-trace
binding; resolve through it and keep `aliases` as the fallback for fields it
does not list.
- The default polar angle row returned its preformatted text unconditionally,
so an accepted `format={"x": ...}` never reached the formatter. It does now.
The authored spoke label stays the default, though: it is what makes the row
readable, and a format was never a request for radians — only an explicit
format for that channel overrides it.
Both are pinned by browser probes that fail without the fix (the per-trace one
reports `10:05` for the second trace instead of `Sep 17, 2026`).
Also from review, precision rather than behavior: the spec said "every tooltip
value" while sankey, funnel and categorical-colour rows keep their own text;
axis inheritance needed qualifying as strftime-only and position-channel-only
in all three of spec, docs and news; the news fragment overstated the ISO
fallback, which sub-second spans still take; the docs pairing example built an
axis and a tooltip without a chart; and the span test re-ran the whole format
probe to assert four keys, so the probe now splices in only the cases its test
reads.

Each browser probe test now states what it pins rather than leaving it to the assertions' inline comments, which is how the rest of tests/ reads.
The probe helper skipped on a missing browser before reaching `run_browser_probe`, which is where XY_REQUIRE_BROWSER turns that skip into a failure — so under the flag these tests could still pass by absence, the one thing the flag exists to prevent. Checked at the skip instead. Docs and news described the span ladder in calendar units that did not name the minute tier; both now state the thresholds the spec does. The standalone `format=` sentence also implied it reaches every default row, so it now says what it addresses: values, not a categorical colour's category name or the readouts a composition defines for itself.
The probe's window sizes were bare millisecond arithmetic; each now says what it represents, per the repository's rule for time-based calculations.

Headless Chromium renders the docs demo twice — once against this PR's base client, once against this branch's — hovering the same point through the view's own hover API, so the image shows the shipped path rather than a mock. The span paragraph ran past the file's prose wrap; "the readouts compositions define for themselves" needs its "that"; and the prelude's comment claimed every probe below splices into it, when the per-trace and polar probes stand alone — they hover two traces and re-spec between hovers respectively, so folding them in would parameterize the wait, the trace and the hover for one caller each. The comment now says which probes splice and why the others do not.
Picks up the band-tooltip fixes and the main merge on `alek/tooltip-x-band`.

Required changes:
js/src/30_ticks.tsdefaultTimeFormat: with noformat=, the span-based default can make adjacent points read identically (10 s data in a 3 min window both readSep 17, 10:00). The ISO fallback on the base branch kept them distinct. Choose the pattern so it never hides the data's resolution, and add an adjacent-points test.spec/api/interaction.md§7.4: fix the colour/size sentence and the "one granularity finer than the axis labels" claim so they match the code.
Verified working, live in headless Chromium with real mouse hovers: format={"time": strftime}, format={"x": …}, title/fields placeholders, axis format= inheritance, mode="x" band title with per-series .0%/.3f, numeric-on-time ",.0f", the sub-second ISO fallback, and non-time scatter charts unchanged. The PR's tests (test_tooltip_time_format.py, test_tooltip_band.py) pass, and CI is green. A news fragment is present.

The span-based default picked a tier from the visible window alone, which says nothing about how close the samples are. Ten-second samples in a three-minute window both read `Sep 17, 10:00`, and every hour of a day read `Sep 17, 2026` over a month of hourly data: a tooltip names ONE point, and a pattern that prints the same string for a point and the one beside it names neither. The ISO stamp this default replaced kept them distinct. The span still picks the tier -- it is what says how much context the value needs -- and the hovered series' own sampling is now the floor it may not coarsen past. `_tooltipTimeResolution` measures the gap from the hovered point to its neighbours (O(1), mean column spacing when a band title has no row index to hand), and `defaultTimeFormat` steps to the next finer tier while the current one's unit is strictly coarser than that gap. Strictly, so a tier whose unit equals the spacing stands: daily samples already differ in date, and a month-wide window of them is not given a clock it has no use for. Two tests, both failing before this change: the adjacent-points case, where ten-second samples three minutes wide now read `10:00:10` and `10:00:20` rather than one shared `Sep 17, 10:00`, and the no-over-refinement case, where daily samples in a month-wide window keep `%b %d, %Y`. The existing span test moves to the new contract -- its five-minute samples keep the clock time even in a months-wide window. Also corrects spec §7.4, which claimed colour and size take the span default before the ISO stamp. They never reach that path: their rows ship with no kind, so they are always read as numbers, and they have no axis to take a span from. The "one granularity finer than the axis labels" claim goes with it -- `fmtTime` picks label precision from the tick step, not the span, so the two were never in that relation.

Resolving the sampling floor by stepping down whole patterns bought the precision by dropping context, because each rung changed two things at once. Per-second samples in a month-wide window landed on `%H:%M:%S` and named no day at all -- worse than the span alone, which at least said `Sep 17, 2026` -- and five-minute samples in that window lost the year. Found by greptile and cubic on the previous head; reproduced before changing anything. The two questions are now answered separately and composed. The span says how much CONTEXT a value carries (the year, the date, or neither) and sets a baseline clock; the sampling can only SHARPEN that clock, to `%H:%M` from a minute up and `%H:%M:%S` from a second up, and finer than a second there is no strftime token so the ISO stamp stays. The date part is never touched by the sharpening, so per-second samples two months wide read `Sep 17, 2026, 10:00:10`. `test_browser_time_tooltip_default_keeps_the_date_a_wide_window_calls_for` pins it, and fails on the previous head with `10:00:01` -- a point in a forty-day window that does not say which day. The two existing span cases move with it: a months-wide window of five-minute samples keeps its year (`Sep 17, 2026, 10:05`), and the adjacent-sample pair keeps its date (`Sep 17, 10:00:10`). Also corrects two claims cubic caught in the same pass. The sampling floor is the resolved default's alone: an authored pattern, and one inherited from the axis, is used as written, because that inheritance exists so a tooltip and the ticks under it read alike and a silent sharpening would undo it. And the mean-spacing fallback is no longer the band title's case -- every call site now carries the hovered row -- so it is described as what it is, the path for a context with no row index.

The sharpening paragraph followed the clock down to seconds and stopped. Past that there is no strftime token to sharpen to, so the ISO stamp comes back whatever the window -- a reader of 500 ms data would have expected `Sep 17, 10:00` from the span and got the full stamp with no sentence explaining it. Spotted by cubic; the span case was already documented a paragraph up, the sampling case was not.

Before / after
The docs demo this PR adds, rendered twice in headless Chromium — once against this PR's base client, once against this branch's — hovering the same point through the view's own hover API, so it shows the shipped path rather than a mock.
The bug
xy.tooltip(format={"time": "%b %d, %Y, %H:%M"})was accepted, shipped correctly on the wire, and then ignored._formatTooltipValueonly ever tried the numeric spec, so a strftime pattern fell through to the raw ISO stamp:fmtTimeSpecexisted but was reachable only from axis labels — no tooltip path called it, for any field, table-backed or not. Reproduced onorigin/mainin headless Chromium before the change, and the same repro is now a test. What changed
One grammar resolves every tooltip value
format=can address — the default x/y/colour/size rows, fields=,title=placeholders, and a band's title and series rows — in both modes:A strftime pattern formats a time-kinded value; anything else stays the numeric spec. The test is a
%followed by one ofYmdHMSbB, not the%alone, so".0%"still means percent andformat={"time": ",.0f"}still means epoch milliseconds as a number. An authored format always wins over an inherited one. Both key spellings resolve.
format=/labels=are keyed by the author's column names; rows are keyed by channel, and a table-backed datetime reaches the row asx. Lookup now walks the channel, then the short channel namelabels=already documents ("color","size"), then the column bound to that channel on the hovered trace, read from thesourcesmap the payload already carries. Two series binding different columns toykeep their own formats, and the band title takes the format keyed by the time column instead of only"x".A time value with nothing authored on it stops reading as an ISO stamp. It follows the axis's own strftime
format=when there is one, so a tooltip and the ticks beneath it agree; otherwise the pattern is composed from two independent answers. The span says how much context the value carries, and sets a baseline clock:
%b %d, %Y%b %d%H:%M%H:%M:%SThe hovered series' sampling can only sharpen that clock, never touch the date:
%H:%Mfrom a minute up,%H:%M:%Sfrom a second up, and finer than a second there is no strftime token, so the ISO stamp stays. A tooltip names ONE point, and a pattern that prints the same string for a point and the one beside it names neither — the span alone cannot know, because it says nothing about how close the samples are. Ten-second samples three minutes wide readSep 17, 10:00:10; per-second samples two months wide readSep 17, 2026, 10:00:10. The comparison is>=, so daily samples in a month-wide window are not given a clock they have no use for.The floor is this resolved default's alone — an authored pattern, and one inherited from the axis, is used as written, because the inheritance exists so a tooltip and its ticks agree. It sharpens as you zoom, which is what "the format depends on the duration of the trade" wants without anyone configuring it.
format=works on its own. An otherwise-empty tooltip short-circuited to the default rows before formats were read, soformat=did nothing unless it was accompanied byfields=ortitle=.Composition-specific readouts are deliberately untouched and documented as such: sankey flow and node totals, funnel stage rows, and a categorical colour label, which is a category name rather than a value. Colour and size values never reach the time path at all — their rows ship with no kind, so a
format=on them is always the numeric spec.Measured, in the real client

greptile, cubic and CodeRabbit filed 15 threads across the first four passes; all are addressed and resolved. Two were real bugs caught before merge and each now has a test that fails without its fix:
aliasesmap, which keeps only the first binding, so the second trace formatted by the wrong channel, axis and span.format=never reached the angle row. Fixed narrowly rather than as suggested:polar.valuemay be an authored spoke label, so routing every customized row through the formatter would have turnedDirection: northintoDirection: 1.57. Only an explicit format for that channel overrides the label.@FarhanAliRaza's review found a third, on the default path (fixed in 08cc63e), and the fix for it drew a fourth (fixed in b86314b):
Sep 17, 10:00and every hour of a day readSep 17, 2026over a month of hourly data — worse than the ISO stamp the default replaced, which at least kept them distinct. His two §7.4 corrections are in the same commit: the colour/size sentence, and a "one granularity finer than the axis labels" claim that was never true, sincefmtTimepicks label precision from the tick step rather than the span.%H:%M:%Sand named no day — and, one rung up, five-minute samples in a 120-day window lost the year. Hence the composition above, which answers the two questions separately so neither can be spent on the other. Each has a test verified to fail on the head before its fix, and cubic's two doc-accuracy findings from the same pass (the floor applies to the resolved default, not an inherited axis pattern; the mean-spacing fallback is no longer the band title's case) are in b86314b.
