Charts over several disk-backed columns from one file (the rows of a 2-D

longer reuse one column's cached statistics for another, which gave a column
the other column's axis range when the chart was built again.

Sidecar writes can overwrite a supported input named <file>.<offset>.xyzones.

For a memmapped column data at offset 0, _zone_cache_path returns data.0.xyzones. MemmapF64Builder accepts any path, so a supported float64 input can use that same name. On a cache miss, _store_zone_cache replaces the target with _os.replace(tmp, path) and does not check what the target contains. The magic check in _load_zone_cache runs only on read. It does not protect the write. The input file is replaced by zone-map bytes, and its data is lost.

The correction must keep supported inputs out of the sidecar namespace. Enforce the reserved .<offset>.xyzones name at the input entry point. Before replacing an existing target, establish that the target is a sidecar this code owns. A magic check alone cannot establish ownership, because a float64 input can begin with XYZONEC2. Stale sidecars must still be replaced. The exact change depends on the input entry points, and this review inspected only MemmapF64Builder. Do not apply a fix until those entry points are checked.

Review comment at @python/xy/columns.py around lines 100 - 107:
Update the input validation around MemmapF64Builder to reject supported input
paths in the reserved .<offset>.xyzones namespace, and update
_store_zone_cache to replace an existing target only after establishing it is an
owned sidecar; do not rely on the magic bytes alone for ownership. Preserve
replacement of stale sidecars.

P2: This check-then-unlink can delete another column’s v2 cache during concurrent builds: that cache can replace the v1 file after the read but before unlink. Synchronize legacy cleanup with all v2 writers, or omit cleanup when the path can be shared.

Do not unlink an unowned legacy path.

When data is ingested, successful cache creation writes data.0.xyzones, then checks data.xyzones. A supported float64 input at data.xyzones can be deleted when its first eight bytes are XYZONEC1. The base implementation used data.xyzones as the cache path and did not delete it after storing another cache.

A v1 sidecar is also accepted by open_f64: its header and payload size are multiples of eight bytes. Therefore, the same file can be a valid v1 sidecar and a supported float64 input. Remove this cleanup or replace it with ownership tracking that cannot classify an input by magic bytes alone.

Review comment at @python/xy/columns.py around lines 196 - 201:
Remove the legacy-path cleanup from the cache creation flow: the magic-byte
check and unlink in this block can delete a valid input file at `source +

its contents; preserve it unless ownership can be reliably established.
