Fixes #8653

This PR preserves the raw field value result in Batch Attachment Import when the schema-level field formatter cannot parse them. The importer builds its result parser from the generic CollectionObject.catalogNumber schema field. The default for the collection was CatalogNumberNumeric, while some Collection Object Types use a different formatter, such as FishObsCatalogNumber (F-######). When treating this strictly, F-250750 fails the generic formatter and the validation code drops the result before comparing it with the mapping value. 😔

The result formatter now keeps the raw database value when the field formatter rejects it, while still keeping the canonical formatting for values the formatter accepts. Regression tests are added as well to make sure this keeps working. 💪

Testing instructions

  • In a database, choose collection object(s) with a non-numeric catalog number to upload attachments to. Name files and create a mapping file for those records on your device. See saiab attachments.zip for an example or testing on a copy of the saiab database
  • Ensure the current collection has a catalogNumberNumeric format set in schema config
  • Manually validate a mapping-file import with an existing F-###### catalog number whose Collection Object Type uses a prefixed catalog number formatter.
  • See that the records with a non-numeric catalog number are matched to

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Catalog numbers that can’t be formatted by the selected field formatter are now preserved as entered. Compatible values continue to display in the formatted style.

📝 Walkthrough

The bulk attachment importer now retains query-result values when a formatter returns no result. Tests cover catalog numbers that either fail or pass the schema formatter.

Changes: Bulk attachment result formatting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Format query results with raw-value fallback
specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/AttachmentsBulkImport/SelectUploadPath.tsx, specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/AttachmentsBulkImport/__tests__/SelectUploadPath.test.ts
The query-results formatter falls back to the raw string when the UI formatter or syncFieldFormat returns no result. Tests check that F-250750 remains unchanged and 123 becomes 000000123.

Full details: Testing Instructions

Explanation

The instruction identifies the correct scenario, but it is not sufficiently actionable. The changed code affects Batch Attachment Import validation for Collection Object → Catalogue Number in mapping-file mode. The instruction does not specify the import entry point, the match target, the mapping value, the validation action, or the expected result.

Resolution

Replace the unchecked item with explicit steps: open Attachments → Import; use mapping-file matching; map the file to Collection Object → Catalogue Number; use an existing record such as F-250750 whose Collection Object Type uses the F-###### formatter; validate the import; confirm the record matches and is not reported as No match. Retain the automated tests for generateUploadSpec to cover raw-value preservation and canonical formatting.

🟡 Minor · Use the extension-stripped filename for numeric formatting. · SelectUploadPath.tsx:69-91

specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/AttachmentsBulkImport/SelectUploadPath.tsx:69-91
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the extension-stripped filename for numeric formatting.

When CollectionObject.catalogNumber uses CatalogNumberNumeric, resolveFileNames passes 123.jpg to formatQueryResults. The formatter rejects it, so the raw fallback returns 123.jpg and skips numeric padding. The query result 123 becomes 000000123, and exact matching fails.

Use splitName for this formatter path. This preserves raw query-result values such as F-250750.

Suggested fix
   if (formatter?.parts.every((field) => field.type !== 'regex') === true) {
-    nameToParse = fileName.trim().slice(0, formatter.size);
+    nameToParse = splitName.slice(0, formatter.size);
   }
