Reviewed head 91d954822ff12b4bf18dda4779b943f7b69900fe.
The architecture is consistent with the backend split: PTO keeps its lowering and device codegen, the new callback compiles PTODSL -> MLIR -> ptoas fat object -> Bisheng-linked image -> extracted aibin, and shared host codegen plus the Ascend runtime handle execution. Explicit execution_backend="pto" retains the legacy path.
I am requesting changes for the four inline findings: the new subprocess entry point shadows the installed PTODSL package under normal Python startup, the binary-cache identity omits the actual CANN device toolchain, switching the default breaks existing launch keyword arguments, and the existing backend-manifest test still expects the old execution-backend list.
Documentation and validation also need reconciliation:
- The Ascend README still says
autoselects the PTO execution adapter; the implementation now selectstvm_ffi. - The added numerical tests compare against Torch, and the mixed GEMM uses tolerances. They do not directly establish bit-exact equivalence with the legacy execution backend. The reported example-suite and benchmark results remain validation from the author's environment.
- The cache tests mock
toolchain_stamp(); a binary-cache hit in a fresh process still resolves the tools and queries their versions before loading the entry.
Validation performed: static review of all 12 changed files and the related host/runtime/cache paths; a minimal Python import-resolution reproduction; isolated checks of the manifest expectation and toolchain stamp. NPU/CANN end-to-end tests and benchmarks were not run in the review environment, and CI status could not be verified because the checks service was unavailable.

[P1] Avoid placing contrib ahead of the installed PTODSL package
Executing this file by pathname puts tilelang/contrib at sys.path[0] under normal Python startup. Its sibling ptodsl/ directory is TileLang's compatibility package, so the generated source's from ptodsl import pto imports that package instead of the installed PTODSL frontend. The compatibility package imports common.py, which imports pto again and raises ImportError: cannot import name 'pto' from partially initialized module 'ptodsl'. I reproduced the module resolution and circular import independently. The legacy python -c entry point does not add this directory. Since this PR makes the new path the default, cold PTO compilation fails unless the environment happens to suppress the script directory. Please use an entry point that preserves dependency resolution and add a subprocess import regression test.

[P2] Fingerprint the device toolchain actually selected by PTOAS
find_bisheng_path() selects BISHENG_HOME/bin/bisheng or a PATH executable, but PTOAS VPTO emission selects its device compiler, CCE linker, and CANN version from ASCEND_HOME_PATH (see PTOAS vmi-v0.1.4). That CANN version also changes the public ABI suffix. Keeping the PTOAS executable and the separately selected Bisheng linker fixed while switching ASCEND_HOME_PATH leaves this stamp, and therefore the binary-cache key, unchanged even though the actual device compiler/ABI changed. This can reuse an aibin from the previous CANN toolchain instead of recompiling it. Please include the resolved CANN/device-toolchain identity and cover this change in the cache invalidation tests.

Fixed in 4c18372
toolchain_stamp now records the ptoas version & the CANN identity ptoas itself resolves (instead of bisheng version selected by find_bisheng_path)

[P2] Preserve launch keyword compatibility before switching auto
Previously, tilelang.compile(func, target="pto") selected PTOKernelAdapter, whose callable accepts stream= and skip_tensor_validation=. With this new default it selects TVMFFIKernelAdapter, whose callable closures only accept *inputs. Existing calls such as kernel(a, b, stream=stream_handle) therefore raise TypeError: unexpected keyword argument 'stream' before launch once compilation succeeds. Retaining the explicit legacy backend provides a workaround but does not preserve behavior for existing callers using auto. Please provide compatible keyword handling, or retain the existing default until this migration is handled and tested.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
TVMFFIKernelAdapter is shared across targets. The keyword surface changed identically for every target that moved off the cython wrappers. Since the pto backend is new enough, existing stream=/skip_tensor_validation= use cases hardly exist. I'd rather drop the keyword compatibility and not grow shared-adapter API for a target-local concern.

[P2] Update the existing backend-manifest expectation
Adding this spec changes the PTO manifest from ["pto"] to ["tvm_ffi", "pto"], but test_builtin_backend_modules_are_explicit still asserts the original list. The hardware-independent shared backend test therefore fails even when all 11 newly added tests pass. I checked the actual head's declaration against that expectation in isolation. Please update the expected manifest and run the shared backend tests alongside the new PTO tests.

Rechecked the original review against head 4699362. Three of the four inline findings are addressed in code:
The launch-keyword compatibility finding remains unaddressed. PTO auto still selects tvm_ffi, while both TVMFFIKernelAdapter callable closures accept only *inputs (L267, L362). Existing stream= or skip_tensor_validation= calls therefore still raise TypeError before launch. Explicit execution_backend="pto" is a workaround, but does not preserve existing auto callers. I understand the preference to drop these keywords; that leaves the original compatibility request unresolved. For the supplementary points in the original review: the README now describes the correct default. Direct dual-backend torch.equal tests now cover vecadd, dynamic shared memory, and multiple kernels, but not mixed GEMM, so they do not establish the broader bit-exact claim. A fresh-process binary-cache lookup still needs to resolve the toolchain stamp, as acknowledged. Validation for this follow-up was static code inspection only. I did not run the shared backend tests, PTO tests, NPU/CANN end-to-end tests, or benchmarks. |

Rechecked head 3d8c1161bae14f739be0b6467c185ae4cf229aac. One additional P2 issue: the full-kernel cache can reuse an old executable after PTO options or toolchain changes across processes, bypassing the new binary-cache invalidation checks.
The launch-keyword compatibility concern remains in the existing discussion; the author confirmed the change is intentional. The separate same-process toolchain-stamp issue was also discussed, and the author explicitly retained that caching tradeoff.
Validation was static code inspection only. I did not run the NPU/CANN tests or independently reproduce the benchmarks.

[P2] Include PTO compilation inputs in the full-kernel cache key
Compile a kernel, then start a fresh process using the same cache directory with different PTO_FLAGS or a different ptoas/CANN installation. This subclass inherits KernelCache._generate_key, which includes neither the PTO environment options nor the toolchain fingerprint, so tilelang.compile can load the previous executable.so before tilelang_callback_pto_compile runs. The new binary-cache checks are therefore bypassed and the requested compilation changes do not take effect. This occurs across processes, independently of the already-discussed toolchain_stamp() memoization tradeoff. Please include these compilation inputs in the full-kernel cache key and cover invalidation through the public tilelang.compile path.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Kernel cache behavior of the tilelang.compile path is uniform for all targets, the same applies to PTO.
If the kernel cache is necessary to be sensitive to those toolchain-specific compilation inputs, it might be worth proposing this as a separate feature, which would require modifying the base class of the kernel cache and I believe is out of scope for this PR

Resolve execution_backend="auto" for target="pto" to tvm_ffi: the shared host codegen compiles the host program and the Ascend runtime module launches the PTODSL-compiled aibin like any AscendC kernel. A new toolchain callback (ptodsl -> ptoas -> bisheng, .aicore_binary extraction) produces the device binary, cached with ptoas/bisheng version stamps. The legacy "pto" spec (Cython launcher) remains selectable for explicit requests; the new path is verified bit-exact against it and through the examples/ascend suite.
…chain Executing ptodsl_compile.py by pathname put tilelang/contrib at sys.path[0], so the generated source's `from ptodsl import pto` could resolve to the compatibility package instead of the installed PTODSL frontend. Run it with `python -m` instead, which resolves modules exactly like the parent interpreter, and add a subprocess regression test. The binary-cache stamp now records the ptoas version plus the CANN identity ptoas resolves from ASCEND_HOME_PATH (path and the version.info value its ABI decisions read) instead of a separately located bisheng, which is the same install in set_env.sh environments.
…default test_builtin_backend_modules_are_explicit still expected ["pto"], and the Ascend README still said "auto" selects the PTO execution adapter.
…quivalence export_library round-trips through load_module with the direct-call ABI; kernel calls inside a host T.serial loop (rejected by the legacy launcher) run and accumulate bit-exactly; the same kernels compiled on both the tvm_ffi and legacy pto backends produce identical outputs.
The kernel-cache entry stores the PTOTVMFFIKernelCache artifacts and a fresh process reuses it without re-running the toolchain; autotuning completes end-to-end and reloads the best kernel from its cache.
…cess Run ptodsl_compile.py by script path instead of via -m: the script drops its own directory from sys.path (so the ptodsl compat package cannot shadow the installed PTODSL frontend) and preloads stub parent packages for tilelang, so the generated source's import of tilelang.contrib.ptodsl skips tilelang/__init__.py and its torch/tvm chain. The PTODSL->MLIR step drops from ~5s to ~0.5s per cold compile.
target.build.tilelang_pto now eagerly compiles through the toolchain, but these tests only parse the generated PTODSL source; the kernels exercise control-flow shapes and a literal "main" symbol that the toolchain is not asked to support. Point them at tilelang_pto_without_compile, the entry that exists for source inspection.
A section header declaring a size beyond the end of the image made the extract slice return truncated bytes silently; they were then cached with matching metadata and only failed much later in aclrtBinaryLoadFromData.
Stub the timing measurement so the test covers the cache chain: per-config compile, the on-disk autotune result, and the kernel rebuilt on the cache hit. Rename the file to match the kernel/binary cache tests, shrink the shapes, and restore global cache state through monkeypatch.
Add requires_ascend to the tests that launch kernels, reduce the vecadd and mixed-gemm shapes to the smallest inputs that keep the covered paths (mixed gemm: 128x64x128 with 16x16x32 tiles), and trim the docstrings.
…test The test inspects generated source and arrived from main, where target.build.tilelang_pto still returned a source-only module. Now that the full build invokes ptoas, route it through tilelang_pto_without_compile like the other mad-direction tests.
Return the ptoas flags from the fake compile so a hit is identifiable by its bytes, add a restore phase that must reuse the first entry, and merge the ptoas/CANN identity cases into one parametrized test. Borrowed from the binary-cache tests in tile-ai#3691.
