fix(vis): keep the CI log alive when the runner stops draining stdout - #36
Conversation
A CI run's task-output dump was one unbounded process.stdout.write of the whole buffered task output (up to 256 KiB). When a runner stops draining the stdout pipe mid-dump, that single write wedges, every later line queues invisibly behind it, and the log freezes mid-line — observed in the wild as a 47-minute silent hang of an otherwise green test leg that had to be cancelled by hand. Route all CI-path output (status lines, group dumps, summaries) through a bounded, backpressure-aware writer: - writes are chunked (<= 32 KiB, line-aligned, surrogate-pair safe) and honor backpressure: after a false return the pump waits for drain before committing the next chunk, so at most one chunk ever sits inside the stream's buffer - the fast path stays synchronous: a healthy reader sees identical behavior to the direct writes this replaces - a watchdog escalates a stuck channel: warn on stderr (naming the pending task), then destroy the wedged stdout and reroute the remaining output to stderr (at most one chunk lost), then — only if stderr is wedged too — drop output so the run can still finish - stream errors (EPIPE and friends) reroute immediately instead of crashing or wedging the log

The CI workflow was the only one not passing run-signatures-audit: false to the node setup step, so it inherited the default and ran `npm audit signatures` — which fails with ETARGET on the never-published workspace binding placeholder `@visulima/secret-scanner-binding-*@0.0.0-alpha.0` that pnpm installs from the workspace. main has been red on this since 2026-10-19; build-native, codspeed, coverage-baseline, data-sync, lint, semantic-release and preview-release all already disable it.
WalkthroughThe change adds a bounded CI output writer that handles chunking, backpressure, and stream failures. Lifecycle and status output now uses the writer. The test workflow setup disables npm signatures audit and npm audit. ChangesCI Output Writer

process.stdout.destroy()does not release a pending piped write. Preserve the explicitprocess.exit(process.exitCode ?? 0)inrunAndExit. It is shared by thevis, vis exec, andvisxentrypoints. The current writer tests use fake streams and do not verify subprocess termination with a real pipedstdout.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

What
A CI run's task-output dump was one unbounded
process.stdout.writeof a completed task's whole buffered output (up to 256 KiB). When a CI runner stops draining the stdout pipe mid-dump, that single write wedges, every later line queues invisibly behind it, and the log freezes mid-line. The fast path of the run keeps going — but the rest of the log is swallowed, and on the finalprocess.exitall of it is lost.Observed in the wild (anolilab/lunora Actions, 2026-10-20, node 22.22 coverage leg): the log froze mid-dump of a completed task's output (~420 ms into the grouped replay of
runtime:test:coverage), zero output for the next ~47 minutes with every test that ran green, until the job was cancelled by hand. The wedged write also holds the process open, so the leg never concluded on its own.Change
Route all CI-path output (task status lines,
::group::dumps, run summary, cache notices) through a new bounded, backpressure-aware writer —src/tui/ci-output-writer.ts:write()returnsfalsethe pump waits fordrainbefore committing the next chunk — no unbounded userland buffering behind a stalled reader. The fast path stays synchronous, so a healthy reader sees byte-identical behavior to the directprocess.stdout.writecalls this replaces.process.stdout) and reroute remaining output to stderr; at most one 32 KiB chunk is lost;flush()can never hang a caller: it resolves when the queue drains, immediately when idle, and right away on the dropped channel.Touched wiring:
status-utils.ts(logCommandOutputCI),static-life-cycle.ts(banner, task lines, notices, summary),summary-life-cycle.ts(summary) — the entire non-TTY output path shares one writer, so ordering stays FIFO in every mode (github/gitlab/buildkite/azure/plain).Tests
__tests__/tui/ci-output-writer.test.ts— 11 tests, including the observed-incident regression: a wedged stdout mid-dump loses at most one chunk, the stall is reported on stderr naming the task, the remaining output lands on stderr in order, andflush()resolves. Plus chunking (line boundaries, surrogate pairs), FIFO order, drain-wait, immediate EPIPE reroute, no escalation while the reader keeps making progress, and the both-pipes-wedged drop.Full
