[None][feat] Anthropic Messages: keepalive pings while a stream is silent - #21030
Anthropic's streaming format allows keepalive events: "Event streams might also include any number of ping events", and "There might be ping events dispersed throughout the response". A client or proxy that times out a silent stream counts any event, a ping included, as activity. The official Python SDK skips the event, and Claude Code resets its idle timer on it.
/v1/messages streaming sent none. A stream therefore stayed silent until the first token, through queueing and prefill, and for as long as the model wrote a tool call, because the tool parser releases a call only once it is complete. Claude Code coding sessions served by DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash had silences of up to 33 s while the model wrote a long tool call such as a Write or an Edit, and first tokens that took up to 15 s. Any client or proxy whose timeout is shorter cuts such a stream.
Until [DONE], a ping now goes out whenever no other event has for STREAM_PING_INTERVAL_S (10 s). Nothing is sent after [DONE], while the rest of the upstream is read.
A ping can come before message_start. The message starts at the first upstream chunk, because that chunk carries the prompt's usage, so without one the stream would stay silent until the first token. Clients skip pings wherever they appear: the official Python SDK, and the TypeScript SDK that Claude Code bundles (checked in 2.1.309), drop ping events before their message accumulator, whose order check (message_start first) never sees them. The first event other than ping is still message_start.
How it waits:
One task reads the upstream chat stream to its end and hands its lines over through a queue.
The reframer waits on that queue with a timeout. A ping therefore never interrupts a read.
The chat stream is never resumed from another task. An async generator that holds a task-bound context across a yield breaks if another task resumes it.
The reader task is cancelled when the consumer stops, for example when the client disconnects. The reframer closes its line source explicitly, so the cancellation does not wait for garbage collection.
Cost: the handoff adds about 7 µs per upstream line on Python 3.12, measured in isolation. A plain async for costs about 3 µs per item.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_adapter.py (CPU, already in l0_cpu.yml) gains 8 tests, and its event invariants now skip pings:
a silence longer than the interval is broken by pings, inside the message;
pings while the first token is slow, with message_start the first other event;
an upstream that fails before its first chunk still ends the stream with an error event;
upstream chunks that produce no event do not count as activity;
no ping while events flow, over a stream five intervals long;
stopping the stream cancels its pending upstream read;
the upstream is read from one task;
an upstream failure mid-stream still ends the message with an error event, reported as the upstream's failure.
Results, on a build of main 9bb7931 with this change and the other open serving fixes applied:
The full tool-parser, Anthropic adapter and Anthropic route suites pass: 991 tests.
The ping tests passed in each of 16 repeated runs: 13 of earlier revisions of this change, 3 of this one.
Each of 8 planted bugs in the new code makes at least one of them fail, or hang until its timeout: no pings; no ping before message_start; events that do not restart the wait; a wait that restarts on every upstream line; pings that do not restart it; the reader task left running when the stream stops; an upstream error swallowed; the end of the upstream never signalled.
An earlier version of this change read each upstream line in a task of its own and pinged only after message_start. It fails the one-task test and both first-token tests.

The adapter emits ping events after 10 seconds without an event, including before message_start. A single reader task queues upstream lines while the reframer waits for activity or a ping timeout. The adapter closes or cancels the upstream read when the client stops, and suppresses pings after [DONE] while the upstream drains.
AnthropicPingEvent adds the protocol model for type: "ping". No current review findings were supplied. Test results are author-reported and were not independently verified.

Walkthrough
The Anthropic adapter emits ping events after 10 seconds without upstream input, including before the first event. A single background reader supplies upstream lines. The adapter cancels and awaits that reader when reframing ends.
The protocol adds AnthropicPingEvent. The adapter emits pings during upstream silence, resets the timer after processing chunks, and closes the tick iterator when reframing exits.
Ping and cleanup validation tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_adapter.py
Tests cover pings before the first event and during silence, no pings during steady flow or after [DONE], backpressure, reader cancellation, single-task upstream reads, and upstream failures.

Add a regression test for post-[DONE] ping suppression.
The current paced tests do not delay the upstream after [DONE]. Add a case with a 0.3-second pause before a final empty line. With interval=0.05, assert that ping is absent from the entire event list and that assert_event_invariants(events) passes.
Do not assert only that no ping appears after message_delta. The closing frames place message_delta near the end, so removing the done guard would emit pings before message_delta, and that assertion would miss the regression.

The Anthropic streaming format allows any number of ping events, and
clients and proxies reset their timers on any event. The server sent
none, so a stream stayed silent until the first token (queueing and
prefill) and for as long as the model wrote a tool call, which the tool
parser releases only once it is complete. A long Write or Edit kept a
stream silent for over 30 s, and first tokens took up to 15 s.
Until [DONE], a ping now goes out whenever no other event has for
STREAM_PING_INTERVAL_S (10 s), before message_start too: the message
starts at the first upstream chunk, which carries the prompt's usage.
Clients skip pings wherever they appear.
One task reads the upstream chat stream to its end and hands its lines
over through a queue, so a ping never interrupts a read and the chat
stream is never resumed from another task. The reframer closes its line
source when it ends, which cancels that task.

…the pinged stream
The task that reads the upstream for the keepalive pings now hands over one
item at a time, so the upstream is read only as fast as the client takes
frames, as before the pings. Tests: a slow client against a fast upstream,
which still sees the end or the error, and no ping after [DONE].

@coderabbitai On the nitpick in review 5655579971 (ping suppression after [DONE]): added in 8cd8932. test_stream_sends_no_ping_after_done pauses the upstream 0.3 s after [DONE] before a final empty line, with a 0.05 s interval, and checks that no event in the whole stream is a ping and that the event invariants hold. Without the done guard in until_ping, it fails.

@JunyiXu-nv Confirmed by code inspection: until_ping() returns None after [DONE], which disables ping timeouts while the upstream drains.
test_stream_sends_no_ping_after_done covers the 0.3-second delay with a 0.05-second interval and checks both event invariants and the absence of pings. This addresses the nitpick. I did not run the test in this environment.
…am's client leaves
The reader of the pinged stream closes its source when it is cancelled, the
SSE line reader closes the upstream when it is left early, and the stream
waits for the reader to stop. A client that leaves while the next frame
waits to be handed over thus closes the upstream at once, as it did before
the pings.

The keepalive ticks now wrap the upstream's payloads rather than the lines
split from them, so a payload costs one hand-off between the reading task and
the stream instead of one per line. The reader closes its source in a single
finally. The no-ping test uses a 1 s interval against 20 ms gaps, so a
loaded worker does not fake a silence.

… cancelled on its own
The reader task re-raised a CancelledError without handing over the end
marker, assuming the consumer had stopped it. A CancelledError raised inside
the upstream itself left the consumer waiting, so the stream sent pings
forever. The reader now hands over the end marker unless the consumer
stopped it, and the stream ends with that cancellation.

…ng while the context phase runs
On the disaggregated server, a streamed /v1/messages request receives no
bytes at all, not even the HTTP status line, until the context phase is
done: the handler awaits the chat pipeline before it creates the streaming
response, and the pipeline returns its stream only once the context worker
has answered, in both schedule orders. Queueing plus prefill of a long agent
prompt takes tens of seconds to minutes under load, and clients, or the
proxies in front of them, drop a stream that has sent nothing for about
15-35 s. The keepalive pings of NVIDIA#21030 cannot help there, because the
stream starts only after the context phase.
A streamed request now waits for its pipeline for at most
_MESSAGES_STREAM_START_WAIT_S (1 s). A pipeline that answers within the
wait is answered as before: its stream is relayed, and a failure, such as
a context worker's fast over-length rejection, keeps its HTTP status and
Anthropic error body. A pipeline still running after the wait has its
stream started at once: the reframer sends its pings while the pipeline
runs and then relays the generation stream, with message_start from its
first chunk. A failure after that ends the stream with an error event that
carries the message of the error response the request would have received.
A client that disconnects while the context phase runs cancels the wait,
which stops the proxy's context request as for any abandoned request.
The mapping from the pipeline's outcome to the Anthropic response moves
into _messages_answer so that both paths share it. Non-streamed requests
and the other routes are unchanged.
