Description

On the disaggregated server, a streamed /v1/messages request receives no bytes at all, not even the HTTP status line, until the context phase is done. OpenAIDisaggServer.anthropic_messages awaits the chat pipeline before it creates the StreamingResponse, and the pipeline returns its stream only once the context worker has answered: in context-first order that is the context POST, which never streams, and in generation-first order the pipeline also waits for the context response before it returns the generation stream. Queueing plus prefill of a long agent prompt takes tens of seconds to minutes under load, and clients, or the proxies in front of them, drop a stream that has sent nothing for about 15-35 s (Claude Code behind such a proxy needs its first event within about 15 s). #21030 adds keepalive ping events to the Anthropic stream, before message_start too, but on the disaggregated server the stream starts only after the context phase, so they cannot help there.

This change, for a streamed /v1/messages request on the disaggregated server:

  • starts the chat pipeline and waits for it for at most _MESSAGES_STREAM_START_WAIT_S (1 s);
  • answers a pipeline that completes within the wait exactly as before: its stream is reframed and relayed, and a failure is returned with its HTTP status and Anthropic error body;
  • for a pipeline still running after the wait, returns the StreamingResponse at once. [None][feat] Anthropic Messages: keepalive pings while a stream is silent #21030's reframer sends its ping events (same frame, same interval) while the pipeline runs and then relays the generation stream; message_start comes from the first upstream chunk, as in [None][feat] Anthropic Messages: keepalive pings while a stream is silent #21030. The client so has the status line within 1 s and the first ping about 10 s later, inside the 15 s bound;
  • ends the stream with an Anthropic error event if the pipeline fails after the stream started, the way [None][feat] Anthropic Messages: keepalive pings while a stream is silent #21030's reframer reports a mid-stream failure, instead of hanging or closing the message with message_stop. The event carries the message of the error response the request would otherwise have received;
  • stops waiting when the client disconnects while the context phase runs: the stream's cancellation reaches the pipeline, which stops the proxy's context request as it stops any abandoned request. Aborting the request on the context worker itself is a separate matter and not part of this change.

The mapping from the pipeline's outcome to the Anthropic response moves into _messages_answer, unchanged except that the caller reframes a stream. Both paths use it, so a late failure carries exactly the message its HTTP error would have.

Builds on #21030 (merged), which added the keepalive pings and the reframer's error reporting. It is rebased onto #20491 (merged), which cancels the paired generation request when the context phase fails or is cancelled; this change leaves that path as it is, and the tests below pass with it.

#21107 relies on a context worker's over-length rejection arriving before any stream, so that it can answer it with HTTP 400. A worker rejects an over-length prompt when it receives the request, before scheduling or prefill, so the rejection normally arrives well within the 1 s wait and takes the unchanged path: HTTP 400 with the Anthropic error body (with #21107, in its wording). A rejection that arrives after the wait ends the stream with an error event whose message is the one the HTTP error would carry, which with #21107 is also its wording.

Behavior change: a streamed request whose pipeline takes longer than 1 s now gets HTTP 200 at once and any later failure as an error event, where it used to get the failure as an HTTP error status after the context phase. Non-streamed requests, and the chat completions, completions and Responses routes, are unchanged.

Test Coverage

All 316 tests in tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_openai_disagg_service.py, tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_openai_disagg_server.py, and tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_adapter.py pass locally with compiled bindings. Full CI remains required. The disaggregated test directory is already included in l0_cpu.yml.

The 20 new cases cover both context-first and generation-first scheduling:

  • Early response startup and keepalive pings while the context phase remains blocked.
  • Fast success preserving the reframed generation stream.
  • Fast 400/503 failures preserving the HTTP status and Anthropic error body.
  • Late 400/503 failures ending the stream with an error event carrying the original message.
  • Client disconnect after the response starts cancelling the pending context call.
  • Disconnect during response startup, before the body iterator begins, on ASGI 2.3 and 2.4. These four cases check context cancellation in both scheduling orders and cancellation of the generation consumer in generation-first order.
  • Direct cancellation of anthropic_messages during its initial wait propagating CancelledError and cancelling the pending context call.

The direct handler tests wait until the context phase has entered before cancelling the handler. Removing only the route-level chat.cancel() makes both new handler-cancellation cases fail, while both post-start disconnect cases still pass. This verifies that the two cancellation paths have independent coverage.

Review follow-up 396fe59aa1 adds response-level cleanup around the pending chat. All four pre-body disconnect cases fail on the previous head and pass with this change. The response also closes its iterator through the existing ClosingStreamingResponse.

Follow-up e8999ced24 releases the reserved generation server when the pending context call is cancelled. A conditional-disaggregation regression verifies exactly one release under the original reservation ID; it fails on the previous implementation and passes with the fix. This head needs a fresh CI request next watch turn; the already-requested run covers 396fe59aa1.

Focused pre-commit and normal commit hooks pass. All-files pre-commit passes except static typing, which cannot run because the local mypy executable is missing.

Dev Engineer Review

Streaming /v1/messages waits up to one second for the chat pipeline. If the pipeline completes during that wait, the handler returns its response or HTTP error before streaming starts. If the pipeline remains pending, the handler starts a reframed stream that can send keepalive pings. A later pipeline failure becomes an Anthropic error event.

The handler cancels pending chat work when the client disconnects, including before the response body starts. Context cancellation also releases a reserved conditional-generation request. Non-streamed requests and other routes remain unchanged. The supplied information reports 316 native CPU tests passing, but current-head CI remains unverified.

QA Engineer Review

The modified unit tests cover both scheduling orders, fast and delayed context outcomes, stream reframing, client disconnects, direct handler cancellation, and conditional-generation reservation cleanup. The supplied information reports 316 native CPU tests passing. These unit tests do not require entries in the integration test lists. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the described changes; current-head CI still needs confirmation.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_disagg_server.py — Verify the one-second wait, fast HTTP error behavior, delayed Anthropic stream errors, keepalive pings, and cancellation during response startup and body streaming.
  • tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_disagg_service.py — Verify that context cancellation releases the conditional-generation reservation exactly once and does not send a generation request.
  • tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_openai_disagg_server.py — Covers streaming behavior, both scheduling orders, error paths, and cancellation, including disconnects before the response body starts. This unit test file does not require an integration test-list entry.
  • tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_openai_disagg_service.py — Covers reservation cleanup when context processing is cancelled. This unit test file does not require an integration test-list entry.

…ng while the context phase runs

On the disaggregated server, a streamed /v1/messages request receives no
bytes at all, not even the HTTP status line, until the context phase is
done: the handler awaits the chat pipeline before it creates the streaming
response, and the pipeline returns its stream only once the context worker
has answered, in both schedule orders. Queueing plus prefill of a long agent
prompt takes tens of seconds to minutes under load, and clients, or the
proxies in front of them, drop a stream that has sent nothing for about
15-35 s. The keepalive pings of NVIDIA#21030 cannot help there, because the
stream starts only after the context phase.

A streamed request now waits for its pipeline for at most
_MESSAGES_STREAM_START_WAIT_S (1 s). A pipeline that answers within the
wait is answered as before: its stream is relayed, and a failure, such as
a context worker's fast over-length rejection, keeps its HTTP status and
Anthropic error body. A pipeline still running after the wait has its
stream started at once: the reframer sends its pings while the pipeline
runs and then relays the generation stream, with message_start from its
first chunk. A failure after that ends the stream with an error event that
carries the message of the error response the request would have received.
A client that disconnects while the context phase runs cancels the wait,
which stops the proxy's context request as for any abandoned request.

The mapping from the pipeline's outcome to the Anthropic response moves
into _messages_answer so that both paths share it. Non-streamed requests
and the other routes are unchanged.

Walkthrough

Streamed /v1/messages requests now wait up to one second for the chat pipeline. Completed results and errors are handled before the response starts. If the pipeline remains pending, the route starts an Anthropic-framed stream and relays the eventual OpenAI stream. Cancellation also releases reserved generation work.

Test the handler cancellation branch directly.

The before_the_response_starts case does not cancel anthropic_messages during its pipeline wait. Starlette starts listen_for_disconnect only after the handler returns StreamingResponse, so both variants exercise cancellation after streaming starts. The existing context_cancelled assertion can still pass through _openai_stream_when_done even if the route-level chat.cancel() branch is removed.

Run server.anthropic_messages(...) directly as a task with a blocked context phase. Cancel that task during the wait, then assert that workers.context_cancelled is set and that CancelledError propagates. Rename or remove the before_the_response_starts parameter because it does not represent a distinct pre-response disconnect path.

Test coverage summary: the added cases cover early stream start and pings, fast and late failures, and post-stream client cancellation. The route-level cancellation branch remains untested. Coverage is insufficient for this branch.

Addressed the cancellation-coverage finding in ecb824a. The tests now separately cover a client disconnect after the response starts and direct cancellation of anthropic_messages while it is waiting for the context phase. The handler cases verify both CancelledError propagation and cancellation of the pending context request, for both scheduling orders. The misleading before_the_response_starts disconnect parameter was removed.

All 161 route and adapter tests pass in the local CPU harness. Removing just the route-level chat.cancel() fails both new handler cases while the two post-start disconnect cases still pass. The PR description now reflects this distinction. Focused and commit hooks pass; the all-files typing hook could not run because local mypy is missing.

Cancel chat from the response lifecycle.

For ASGI 2.3, Starlette can cancel StreamingResponse before it starts reframe_openai_stream. _openai_stream_when_done then does not enter its finally block, so the pending pipeline is not cancelled. This leaves the context request running after the one-second wait, and can also leave the generation consumer running in generation_first.

Wrap this response with a response-level finally that calls chat.cancel(). The wrapper must run even when the body iterator has not started.

Addressed the response-lifecycle finding in 396fe59. The pending-chat response now uses the existing ClosingStreamingResponse and cancels its chat task in a response-level finally, including when response startup ends before the body iterator begins.

Four new regression cases cover disconnect during response startup on ASGI 2.3/2.4 and both scheduling orders. All four fail on ecb824a and pass with the fix; they also verify cancellation of the generation consumer in generation-first order. All 165 route/Anthropic-adapter tests pass in the local CPU harness. Focused and normal commit hooks pass; full CI remains required.

Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Release the generation reservation when the pending Messages task is cancelled.

In tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_disagg_service.py, _send_disagg_request_ctx_first reserves a generation server before waiting for context. If the pending chat task is cancelled during that wait, asyncio.CancelledError bypasses except Exception, so finish_request is skipped and the reservation load can remain registered.

The cleanup gap predates this PR, but the new detached Messages task and response-level cancellation add a new path that can reach it. The correct anchor is openai_disagg_service.py:336, not openai_disagg_server.py:315. Add a regression test that enables conditional disaggregation, cancels the pending task during the context phase, and asserts that the original reservation is released.

Fixed the conditional-generation reservation cleanup in e8999ce. Context cancellation now reaches the existing failure cleanup and releases the original generation reservation before propagating CancelledError.

The new regression enables conditional disaggregation, reserves generation under request 101, waits until the context call starts, cancels the pending task, and verifies finish_request(request, success=False, req_id=101) is awaited exactly once. It fails on the previous implementation because finish_request is never awaited. All 316 native CPU service, route, and Anthropic-adapter tests pass with the fix, and focused/commit hooks pass.

This head still needs CI. The earlier CI request in this turn targets 396fe59; a new-head request is deferred to the next watch turn to respect the one-command-per-PR limit.
