docs(ai-persistence): adapter skills always write all four chat tables - #1918
An agent that followed the Drizzle persistence skill on Postgres wrote only chat_threads and chat_runs. It dropped chat_interrupts and chat_metadata. The same skill worked on SQLite. This PR makes the adapter skills say "all four tables, every dialect" and gives the Drizzle skill a full Postgres schema block to copy.
🎯 Changes
Why it broke. The Drizzle skill gave SQLite as a full schema block. Postgres was one prose sentence: "use jsonb(), bigint(), and so on". The skill also points at docs/persistence/build-your-own-adapter.md, which lists interrupts and metadata as optional for a hand-rolled adapter. On Postgres the agent had to translate the schema by hand, read the docs, and kept the two-table minimum.
What changed.
build-drizzle-adapter: a full pg-core schema block for all four tables, type-checked against drizzle-orm. A short MySQL note that starts from that block. A hard rule at the top: write all four tables and stores on every dialect. A done checklist at the end.
build-prisma-adapter and build-custom-adapter: the same hard rule.
Root ai-persistence skill: says every recipe writes all four stores, and that the "which stores do you need" minimums in the docs are for hand-rolled adapters.
Every adapter skill's conformance step now skips the optional activities store. The testkit requires each store to be provided or declared, and the old skip list predates activities, so a reader who copied the verify step got a failing suite.
A patch changeset for @tanstack/ai-persistence, because the skills ship in the package.
No change to docs/. The docs are correct for hand-rolled adapters. The skills were the gap.
I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Testing
Commands run. The Drizzle recipe was run end to end in two scratch apps, outside the repo. A script pulled the schema block and the chat-persistence.ts block out of the skill Markdown verbatim, so the test cannot drift from the text. Each app links the built workspace @tanstack/ai and @tanstack/ai-persistence, pushes the schema with drizzle-kit/api, and runs runPersistenceConformance with checks: ['messages.metadata', 'runs.listByThread.state'].
App
Driver
Result
Drizzle + Postgres
PGlite
15 passed, 0 failed, rest skipped as declared
Drizzle + SQLite
libsql :memory:
15 passed, 0 failed, rest skipped as declared
tsc --strict passed in both apps. oxfmt ran on the changed files. pnpm test:pr was not run: only Markdown skill files and a changeset changed, so CI covers it.
Manual test.
In an app that runs Drizzle on Postgres, ask an agent to add TanStack AI chat persistence with the ai-persistence skill.
Confirm the schema file gets chat_threads, chat_runs, chat_interrupts, and chat_metadata.
Confirm chat-persistence.ts passes all four stores to defineAIPersistence.
How this PR makes testing easy. None. Skills have no automated test yet.
Risk / rollback
Low. Markdown only. Revert the PR to undo.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Clarified that adapter guides cover all four persistence tables and stores: threads, runs, interrupts, and metadata.
Expanded the Drizzle guide with a complete PostgreSQL schema example, MySQL guidance, and a completion checklist.
Noted that omitting required stores can prevent type-checking and cause conformance tests to fail.
Clarified that the conformance examples skip optional activities and generation-related stores, and that adding support for a skipped store allows it to be tested.
The Drizzle skill gave SQLite as a full schema block but Postgres only as
a prose note, and the docs it points at call interrupts and metadata
optional. An agent on Postgres translated by hand and kept only
chat_threads and chat_runs. Add a full pg-core block, an all-four rule to
the Drizzle, Prisma, and custom recipes, and a done checklist.
Each package is measured twice in this job — on this PR and on its merge-base with main — and compared. A metric fails only when it is at or above 60% on the merge-base and under 60% on this PR. Other drops are listed but do not fail. Packages your PR doesn't affect are not measured and not listed.

Walkthrough
Adapter skill guidance now requires all four persistence stores and their corresponding tables or models. The Drizzle guide adds a complete PostgreSQL schema, MySQL adaptation notes, and a completion checklist. The conformance examples update their skipped stores, and a patch changeset records the documentation update.
The recipe and adapter guides require all four chat stores and their corresponding tables or models. The recipe guidance distinguishes these requirements from the minimum requirements for hand-written adapters.
Drizzle schema and dialect guidance packages/ai-persistence/skills/ai-persistence/build-drizzle-adapter/SKILL.md
The guide adds a PostgreSQL schema, MySQL adaptation instructions, and a checklist for tables, store factories, the ChatPersistence annotation, and conformance testing.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to a64f0
This PR updates the adapter skill guidance to require all four chat stores. Several of the new instructions would lead to failing MySQL migrations, broken insert-if-absent paths, or conformance runs that fail for chat-only adapters. Nothing in the runtime package changes, but the guidance should be corrected before merge.

Make all indexed MySQL strings indexable.
The note changes only primary-key columns to varchar. The retained indexes also cover chatRuns.status, chatRuns.threadId, and chatRuns.parentRunId, which remain text().
Drizzle maps these to MySQL TEXT columns. MySQL requires a prefix length for TEXT index parts, so the generated migration fails. Use varchar for every indexed string column or add explicit index prefixes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Translate every conflict operation for MySQL.
The store code uses onConflictDoNothing in createOrResume and interrupts.create, in addition to onConflictDoUpdate. This note only translates the latter.
Following this guidance leaves the MySQL recipe with unsupported conflict calls and breaks its insert-if-absent paths. Use onDuplicateKeyUpdate for all MySQL upserts, including a no-op update for insert-if-absent operations. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

A done checklist at the end.build-prisma-adapterandbuild-custom-adapter: the same hard rule.ai-persistenceskill: says every recipe writes all four stores, and that the "which stores do you need" minimums in the docs are for hand-rolled adapters.activitiesstore. The testkit requires each store to be provided or declared, and the old skip list predatesactivities, so a reader who copied the verify step got a failing suite.@tanstack/ai-persistence, because the skills ship in the package. No change to
docs/. The docs are correct for hand-rolled adapters. The skills were the gap.✅ Checklist

Testing
Commands run. The Drizzle recipe was run end to end in two scratch apps, outside the repo. A script pulled the schema block and the
chat-persistence.tsblock out of the skill Markdown verbatim, so the test cannot drift from the text. Each app links the built workspace@tanstack/aiand@tanstack/ai-persistence, pushes the schema withdrizzle-kit/api, and runsrunPersistenceConformancewithchecks: ['messages.metadata', 'runs.listByThread.state'].:memory:tsc --strictpassed in both apps.oxfmtran on the changed files.pnpm test:prwas not run: only Markdown skill files and a changeset changed, so CI covers it.Manual test.
ai-persistenceskill.chat_threads,chat_runs,chat_interrupts, andchat_metadata.chat-persistence.tspasses all four stores todefineAIPersistence. How this PR makes testing easy. None. Skills have no automated test yet.
Risk / rollback
