JWE parsing and signing assign the unused MAC-key return value to _. Since _ is not local in those functions, each request overwrites _G._ with derived key material and can trigger OpenResty's global-write guard.

Keep the placeholder local in both paths and add a regression test that checks sign and verify preserve a sentinel in _G._.

The JWE CBC authentication-before-decryption fix is already present on current master and is not duplicated here.

Validation: LuaJIT bytecode compilation and a focused OpenResty sign/verify probe pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • JWE signing and verification no longer overwrite a shared global value when discarding intermediate results, preventing unexpected changes to that value in other Lua code.
    • Added regression coverage confirming that verification of A128CBC-HS256 encrypted tokens preserves a preexisting value.

📝 Walkthrough

The JWE parsing and signing paths now use a local _ for discarded key-derivation return values. A test verifies an A128CBC-HS256 JWE and checks that verification leaves the worker global _ unchanged.

Changes: JWE global-state isolation

lib/resty/jwt.lua, t/jwe-integrity.t
parse_jwe and sign_jwe use a local _ for discarded key-derivation return values. The test verifies that successful JWE verification preserves a sentinel in the worker global _.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review

Explanation

No blocking or major issue found. The added Test::Nginx test exercises the public JWE sign and verify flow in OpenResty and asserts that _G._ retains a sentinel. Existing JWE tests cover the other encryption modes and invalid-input paths. The code change is limited to local placeholders in parse_jwe and sign_jwe; the test has clear naming, direct assertions, no mocks, and no hidden test-order dependency.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No security-check failure is introduced. The PR only scopes the discard variable _ in lib/resty/jwt.lua:333 and :585; the JWE key flow and authentication logic remain unchanged. The added test confirms sign and verify preserve _G._ (t/jwe-integrity.t:324-338). 1. Sensitive data exposure: No issues found. 2. Unencrypted database secrets: No issues found. 3. Authorization or permission bypass: No issues found. 4. Cross-resource access: No issues found. 5. TLS or cryptographic configuration: No issues found. 6. Resource isolation: No issues found. 7. Secret reference resolution: No issues found.

Add an RSA-OAEP case that checks _G._ is unchanged after verify.

The new sentinel test in t/jwe-integrity.t:330-342 covers only the DIR / A128CBC-HS256 path. The RSA-OAEP branch of parse_jwe in lib/resty/jwt.lua:333-357 also assigns its unused return value to the local placeholder _. If that local declaration is removed, the RSA branch writes _G._ again. No test in t/ checks the global on the RSA path.

Add an RSA-OAEP sign-and-verify case modeled on the DIR test. Set the sentinel with rawset(_G, "_", sentinel), verify the RSA-OAEP token, and assert rawget(_G, "_") == sentinel. The verify call exercises the changed parse_jwe branch. The sign call only produces the token.
