feat(mcp): guard time limit and refusal log (RFC 0001 Phase 2, part 2) - #242
Completes Phase 2 of RFC 0001 (§5.2) on top of #241.
What
mcp.max_execution_time_ms (default 0 = off):
When an MCP session connects, its session max_execution_time is set to this value through mysql_system_variable_update_integer.
The session may lower the limit but not raise it. These are refused with error 1290 naming mcp.max_execution_time_ms:
SET [SESSION] max_execution_time or @@max_execution_time to 0, above the limit, or to a non-literal (DEFAULT, an expression, a variable);
the MAX_EXECUTION_TIME(n) hint;
the SET_VAR(max_execution_time = n) hint. max_execution_time is HINT_UPDATEABLE, so without this check the hint would get around the limit.
SET text is read in both quoting modes, as for read_only.
mcp.log_denials (default ON):
Every refusal is written to the error log, for example [Warning] [MY-011071] [mcp_guard] mcp_guard: refused by mcp.read_only: MCP connection 11: INSERT INTO d.t VALUES (1).
Each line has the setting, the connection id, and the first 256 bytes of the statement, or the table for table-access refusals.
At most 10 lines are written per minute, and the number left out is reported after that. The docs note that statement text can contain literals.
ER_LOG_PRINTF_MSG is 11071 on 8.4, 9.7 and 26.10; it was derived from messages_to_error_log.txt, since mysqld_error.h is generated at build time.
Self-review fixes: the table-access path builds its log string only when refusing, because table events are frequent. Deinit leaves the logging pointers in place, since they stay valid until unload.
Tests
test_mcp_guard_policy.cc: about 20 new cases for the SET forms, hints, user variables vs system variables, a hint inside a string literal, and floor = 0.
scripts/test-mcp-guard.sh: 78 checks, up from 65.
The session limit is set at connect, and lowering it works.
SET to 0, SET above the limit, and both hints are refused.
A SELECT SLEEP(5) stops after 1 s under a 1 s limit.
A non-MCP account keeps 0, and setting the floor back to 0 turns the limit off.
Refusals appear in the error log, and log_denials = OFF writes nothing.
On the fresh second server, 16 refusals produce exactly 10 log lines.
Server
Result
MySQL 8.4.11
78 passed, 0 failed
MySQL 9.7.2
78 passed, 0 failed
MySQL 26.10.0
78 passed, 0 failed
Other checks: the build is warning-free on all three versions, and actionlint passes.
Next: Phase 3
performance_schema.mcp_tool_calls, audit (audit_api_message_emit), and the Go side: connection attributes, statement comment labels, mapping error 1290 to a clean tool error, and showing the guard in server_info.
MCP sessions can use a configurable query time limit. Attempts to raise or bypass it through settings or query hints are refused, while lowering it is allowed. A zero limit disables the component-enforced time limit, and updated limits apply to connected sessions on their next statement. Stored-program calls are excluded.
Refusals are logged by default, with logging configurable and capped at 10 entries per minute. Logged details redact string literals.
Documentation
Updated MCP component documentation with time-limit settings, refusal logging behavior, and coverage for 80 checks.
- mcp.max_execution_time_ms: an MCP session's max_execution_time is set
at connect; raising it is refused (1290): SET to 0, above the limit or
to a non-literal, and MAX_EXECUTION_TIME(n) / SET_VAR(max_execution_time
= n) hints. Lowering is allowed. SET text is read in both quoting modes.
- mcp.log_denials (ON): refusals go to the error log as [MY-011071]
[mcp_guard] with the setting, connection id and statement start (256
bytes) or table, at most 10 lines a minute plus a count of the rest.
- Tests: 78 checks on 8.4.11, 9.7.2, 26.10.0 (a 5 s SELECT stopped by a
1 s limit; exactly 10 log lines for 16 refusals on a fresh server);
~20 new policy unit cases.

Walkthrough
The MCP guard adds configurable execution-time limits for MCP sessions and refusal logging. It rejects attempts to raise or bypass the limit through session settings or optimizer hints. Tests and documentation cover enforcement, redaction, refusal logging, and the logging cap.

Validate the entire SET_VAR time-limit operand
When mcp.max_execution_time_ms is positive, an MCP user can issue SELECT /*+ SET_VAR(max_execution_time=1G) */ SLEEP(5). This scan reads only the leading 1, treats it as within a 1000 ms floor, and allows the statement, while MySQL interprets the G suffix as 1,073,741,824 ms and overrides the session cap. Validate the complete hint operand so suffixed values cannot bypass the limit.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 3c4526b. After the digits, the hint operand must end with ) or , (spaces allowed), so 1G, 1K and 5.5 are refused. A SET value like 1G is one token and fails the digits-only check. Unit cases cover each form.

The session time limit does not cover tool-pack SELECTs.
The guard allows CALL mysql_mcp.* for MCP sessions. Each tool procedure runs its SELECT as a prepared statement inside the procedure. MySQL 8.4 documents that max_execution_time is ignored for SELECT statements in stored programs. The session limit that the guard sets can therefore fail to stop a slow tool-pack call. This contradicts mcp.max_execution_time_ms, which describes the limit as applying to the SELECTs of MCP sessions.
Choose one of these fixes before the option is described as a ceiling for tool-pack calls:
Restrict CALL mysql_mcp.* while mcp.max_execution_time_ms is set.
Enforce the limit by another mechanism that applies inside the tool procedures.
Document that the limit does not apply to tool-pack calls.

set_unsigned returns TRUE on failure. apply_time_limit discards that status, and the connection callback reports success with return false. If the setter fails, the MCP session can remain usable without the configured execution-time ceiling. Propagate the failure and fail the connection callback instead of proceeding.

Documented in 3c4526b, which is your third option. MySQL ignores max_execution_time inside stored programs, so CALL mysql_mcp.* tool-pack calls are not limited. They run catalog queries on information_schema. Where that is not acceptable, revoke EXECUTE on mysql_mcp: mysql-mcp-server then falls back to its own SQL (it handles 1370 since askdba/mysql-mcp-server#155), and the limit covers those SELECTs.
@askdba Verified in 3c4526b. docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md, Line 78, now states that CALL mysql_mcp.* is not limited and documents the EXECUTE revocation fallback. This addresses the documentation finding through the third option.
The separate setup-failure finding remains open: apply_time_limit() still ignores the return value from set_unsigned().
If you found this review helpful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on X?
…iterals; reapply changed limit
- SET_VAR(max_execution_time=1G) / MAX_EXECUTION_TIME(1K) read only the
leading digits and passed, while MySQL scales the suffix: the operand
must now be the number alone, followed by ) or , (Codex P1).
- Error log: string literals become '?', line breaks spaces.
- A changed mcp.max_execution_time_ms reaches connected MCP sessions at
their next statement (per-session state records the applied limit).
- Docs: 0 turns off only the guard's limit; CALL mysql_mcp.* is not
limited (stored programs ignore max_execution_time) and how to cover
it. Test asserts the interrupted SELECT's result (1 or 3024).
80 checks on 8.4.11, 9.7.2, 26.10.0.

…oth quoting modes
- mark_session() reports failure (allocation or THD-slot set); the
connection is then refused (1290, mcp_guard) instead of running
unguarded.
- Log redaction reads literals with and without backslash escapes; if
the readings differ (NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES), only the text before the
first quote is logged, so 'a\', 'secret' cannot leak.

MySQL resets session variables on change-user, but an MCP-to-MCP change
kept the cached applied limit, so it was not set again. The cache is
cleared on change-user (and starts as 'not applied'). Verified with

the 1000 ms limit (0 before this fix).

A connection reset restores session variables from the globals but
raises no connection event, so the cached applied limit stayed and the
session ran without it. The guard now also tracks command events and
clears the cache on a successful 'Reset Connection'. Verified with
