feat(docker): mysql-mcp images with component_mcp_guard and the tool pack (RFC 0001 Phase 3) - #244
Phase 3 (images) of RFC 0001. Branding question Q6 is settled: a separate image family, not more myvector tags.
What
ghcr.io/askdba/mysql-mcp:<8.4|9.7|26.10> (amd64, arm64): the official mysql:<ver> image plus component_mcp_guard and the mysql_mcp SQL tool pack (docker/mysql-mcp/Dockerfile).
First start (docker/mysql-mcp/mysql-mcp-init.sh, sourced by the official entrypoint): installs the component and tool pack and grants MCP_ADMIN to the root accounts. Optional env:
MYSQL_MCP_USER / MYSQL_MCP_PASSWORD create an MCP account with MCP_USER, EXECUTE on mysql_mcp, and SELECT, SHOW VIEW on MYSQL_MCP_DATABASES (default MYSQL_DATABASE).
MYSQL_MCP_ALLOWED_SCHEMAS and MYSQL_MCP_MAX_EXECUTION_TIME_MS are persisted as guard settings.
Values are quoted as SQL literals or identifiers. Schema grants escape _ and %, as the entrypoint does.
Publishing (docker-publish.yml): the existing component job also builds the guard (MYVECTOR_BUILD_MCP=ON). It tests the image (full first-start test on amd64, contents check on arm64) and pushes ghcr.io/<owner>/mysql-mcp:<ver> with releases. A dry_run dispatch builds without pushing.
CI (integration-scripts.yml, job mcp-guard): builds the image on 8.4.11, 9.7.2 and 26.10.0 and runs scripts/test-mysql-mcp-image.sh (20 checks).
scripts/test-mysql-mcp-image.sh passed 17/17 locally (20/20 after the review checks for NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES and the health probe) on 8.4.11, 9.7.2 and 26.10.0 (arm64). It covers:
After the first publish, the new mysql-mcp GHCR package may need its visibility set to public once (new org packages default to private).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Official mysql-mcp Docker images are available for MySQL 8.4, 9.7, and 26.10. On first startup, they install the MCP guard and SQL tool pack. Optional settings let you create an MCP account, restrict access to selected schemas, and configure execution time limits.
Documentation
Added image setup and usage instructions, including supported configuration options and a note to use a guard component that matches the exact MySQL server release.
Update: dry-run publish found a crash (fixed)
The first dry_run (41190212886) found a crash. The guard built against 8.4.8 crashed mysql:8.4 (8.4.11) at its first refusal (signal 11). I reproduced it locally, and the same build works on mysql:8.4.8.
The publish job now builds each image from the exact release the guard was built for, and also tags it with that release. The Dockerfile requires MYSQL_VERSION.
The re-run (41197658085) passed on all three versions.
The MyVector component images have the same pairing (built on 8.4.8/9.7.0, run on floating mysql:8.4/9.7). That's left for a separate PR.
…pack (RFC 0001 Phase 3)
A separate image family, ghcr.io/<owner>/mysql-mcp:<8.4|9.7|26.10>: the
official mysql image with component_mcp_guard and the mysql_mcp tool pack,
installed on first start by docker/mysql-mcp/mysql-mcp-init.sh. Optional
MYSQL_MCP_USER/PASSWORD create an MCP account (MCP_USER, tool pack, read
access to MYSQL_MCP_DATABASES); MYSQL_MCP_ALLOWED_SCHEMAS and
MYSQL_MCP_MAX_EXECUTION_TIME_MS persist guard settings.
- docker-publish.yml: the component job builds the guard (MYVECTOR_BUILD_MCP=ON),
tests the image and pushes it with releases (dry_run builds only).
- integration-scripts.yml (mcp-guard): builds the image on 8.4.11, 9.7.2,
26.10.0 and runs scripts/test-mysql-mcp-image.sh (17 checks).

Walkthrough
The pull request adds official mysql-mcp Docker images for supported MySQL versions. The images install the guard component and SQL tool pack, apply configured settings and account grants on first start, and are tested and published through CI workflows.
Changes: MySQL MCP image delivery
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Image contents and first-start setup docker/mysql-mcp/Dockerfile, docker/mysql-mcp/mysql-mcp-init.sh
The image packages the architecture-specific guard component and MCP SQL files. First-start initialization installs them, persists configured settings, and can create an MCP account with tool-pack execution and database read grants.
Image smoke tests and CI wiring scripts/test-mysql-mcp-image.sh, .github/workflows/integration-scripts.yml
The smoke test checks configured and default startup, permissions, guard behavior, setting persistence, and backslash handling. The integration workflow builds and tests an amd64 image for each matrix version and adds the image inputs to its path filters.
Release publishing and image documentation .github/workflows/docker-publish.yml, docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md, CHANGELOG.md
The publish workflow enables guard builds, checks image builds for both architectures, and publishes version tags unless the dispatch is a dry run. The documentation and changelog describe supported images and configuration.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review f8881
The built-in health check assumes the default port and sends passwordless probes as MySQL root. Deployments that use a custom port or enable failed-login locking on root could see an unhealthy container or probe-triggered lockouts. Default deployments are unaffected, and operators can override the health check, so this is a small follow-up rather than a merge blocker.

A rabbit checks the image tags, Then watches guard and tool pack land. Settings persist through each restart, While grants obey the schema plan. The bunny hops; the tests all pass.
The dry-run publish showed component_mcp_guard built against 8.4.8 crashing
mysql:8.4 (8.4.11) at its first refusal (signal 11); the same build on
mysql:8.4.8 passes. Reproduced locally. The publish job now builds the image
FROM mysql:<build release> (8.4.8, 9.7.0, 26.10.0) and also tags it with that
release; docs say a component must match the server's exact release.

…ACKSLASH_ESCAPES
- Dockerfile: MYSQL_VERSION has no default, so an image cannot pair the guard
with a different release by accident.
- HEALTHCHECK: mysqladmin ping over TCP without credentials (ping succeeds on
access denied), so MYSQL_RANDOM_ROOT_PASSWORD is probed too and the container
is healthy only after first-start setup (the temporary server has no TCP).
- Init script: batches with string literals clear NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES for the
session, so backslashes in MYSQL_MCP_PASSWORD and settings are kept as given.
- test-mysql-mcp-image.sh: NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES server with a backslash password
and setting, health probe (20 checks).

Review of #244 (CodeRabbit on f888106):
- The probe pinged as root without a password; with FAILED_LOGIN_ATTEMPTS on
root it locked root out (reproduced: error 3955 after 3 probes). It now pings
as a user that does not exist (ping reports a running server even when access
is denied, and a nonexistent account cannot be locked).
- It follows the port mysqld was started with (--port=N / --port N), not 3306.
- docker/mysql-mcp/mysql-mcp-healthcheck.sh holds the probe.
- test-mysql-mcp-image.sh: probes do not lock root; probe follows --port (22).

Resolve docker-publish.yml: the mysql-mcp image steps use matrix.mysql-release
like the component image, instead of deriving the release from mysql-tag; the
mysql-mcp examples name 8.4.13.
