Phase 4 of RFC 0001: the component_mcp build spike. This PR is stacked on #252, the guard fix it depends on. It will retarget to main when #252 merges.
What
component_mcp is an MCP Streamable HTTP endpoint (JSON-RPC 2.0 over POST /mcp) inside mysqld. It runs on MySQL Router's HTTP server, the libraries component_mysql_rest_service links, as decided in RFC §3a.
Build: in the MySQL 26.10 tree, like MRS. MYVECTOR_BUILD_MCP_ENDPOINT=ON ./scripts/build-component-26.10-docker.sh copies src/mcp/endpoint to components/mcp and builds that one target.
Spike scope: loopback (127.0.0.1) and plain HTTP. One bearer token (mcp_http.token_sha256, the hex SHA-256 of the token, read-only and not persisted) maps to one account (mcp_http.account).
Tools:list_databases (CALL mysql_mcp.list_databases()) and run_query (one statement).
Each tool call: opens a "local" command-service session that impersonates the account, runs one statement and closes it. It runs on the endpoint's I/O thread.
CLIENT_MULTI_RESULTS is set so a CALL can return rows. Multi-statements are off, so a; b is a parse error.
Phase 4 exit criterion: met
Through the endpoint, an MCP_USER account's INSERT is refused (1290, mcp.read_only) and its mysql.user read is refused (mcp.deny_system_schemas). Remapped to an account without MCP_USER, the same INSERT is not restricted. RFC open question 4 is answered: these sessions raise no connection event and start unaudited. The fix is #252 plus the CONNECT event emitted here.

Answers for Phase 5 (also in docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md)
Bearer tokens: Router's http_auth_realm / http_auth_backend handle Basic only, so the endpoint checks bearer tokens itself (SHA-256, constant-time compare).
Locked accounts: impersonation skips ACCOUNT LOCK. The endpoint must check account_locked.
Connection limits:max_user_connections is not enforced for these sessions, so the endpoint needs its own per-account cap.
Internal header: the session THD is read from the handle (Mysql_handle->mysql->thd, via sql/server_component/mysql_command_services_imp.h), as MRS does. That's fine in-tree.
Known spike limits:
a single I/O thread, so calls are served one at a time;
no TLS and no Origin check (loopback only);
no row cap beyond the 16 MB response limit;
no account_locked check or per-account cap.
All of these are Phase 5.
Verification
scripts/test-mcp-endpoint.sh mysql:26.10.0 dist/mcp-26.10.0: 20/20. It covers auth (401 without or with a wrong token), initialize, the notifications/initialized 202, tools/list, JSON-RPC errors, both tools, the guard deny paths, the multi-statement parse error, nothing written, no leaked session, the non-MCP account, and uninstall.
scripts/test-mcp-guard.sh 26.10.0 on the same artifacts: 122/122.
CI: new job mcp-endpoint (26.10.0) in integration-scripts.yml.
Added an experimental MCP endpoint for MySQL 26.10, available over plain HTTP on loopback and protected by bearer-token authentication mapped to a configured account.
The endpoint supports listing databases and running a single SQL statement. Results are limited to 1,000 rows and about 4 MB, with truncation indicated. Calls use local sessions and are subject to applicable guard policies.
Documentation
Added setup, configuration, and usage guidance, including build requirements, result limits, and known access-control limitations.
…01 Phase 4)
An MCP Streamable HTTP endpoint (JSON-RPC over POST /mcp) on MySQL Router's
HTTP server, the libraries component_mysql_rest_service links, built in the
MySQL 26.10 tree (MYVECTOR_BUILD_MCP_ENDPOINT=ON with
build-component-26.10-docker.sh). Spike scope: loopback, plain HTTP, one
bearer token (mcp_http.token_sha256) mapped to one account (mcp_http.account),
tools list_databases (tool pack) and run_query (one statement).
Each call runs in an impersonated "local" command-service session, announced
with a connection audit event so component_mcp_guard enforces its policy there
(needs the guard's first-statement classification, #252). Phase 4 exit
criterion met: through the endpoint an MCP_USER account's write and mysql read
are refused; an account without MCP_USER is not restricted.
Measured (26.10.0, arm64, 16 cores): 95 s build of the target, 3.1 MB, 3
threads (MRS: 265 s, 21 MB). scripts/test-mcp-endpoint.sh (20 checks) and the
mcp-endpoint CI job; docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md, CHANGELOG.

A rabbit checks the loopback gate, Two tools answer, one by one. Audited sessions pass the query, Tests count each response done. The endpoint rests when builds are run.

Bound result accumulation before building the response
When a bearer-token holder runs a SELECT that returns a very large result, this loop retains every row in r.rows before the HTTP server applies its 16 MiB response limit. The result can therefore consume unbounded mysqld memory and exhaust the server even though the reply will not be sent; enforce a byte/row bound while reading, using a streaming result path if needed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 4cd7b5a. Results are now bounded as they're read: each session runs SET SESSION sql_select_limit = 1001 before the statement, so the server stops producing rows past 1001 (the RFC §5.3 design). The reply keeps at most 1000 rows and about 4 MB of values and returns {"rows": [...], "truncated": true|false}. Test: a 1500-row table returns exactly 1000 rows, marked truncated.

… (review of #253)
- CodeRabbit (major): component_mcp refuses to install without
component_mcp_guard and refuses tool calls if it is uninstalled later
(checked by its mcp.enabled variable): without the guard a call would run
with the account's plain grants.
- Codex (P1): results are bounded while read: the session's sql_select_limit
stops the server at 1001 rows, the reply keeps 1000 rows / ~4 MB of values and
says {"rows": [...], "truncated": true|false}.
- CodeRabbit (minor): docs hash the token outside MySQL (sha256sum) instead of
SHA2('<token>') in the install statement, which would put the plaintext in
logs and performance_schema; the test does the same.
- test-mcp-endpoint.sh: install refused without the guard, truncation at 1000
rows, calls refused after the guard is uninstalled (23 checks).

Pin component_mcp_guard for the endpoint lifetime.
call_tool checks mcp.enabled before run_as creates its command-service session. Another SQL session can unload component_mcp_guard during this gap. The new session then runs without the guard callbacks, so an MCP_USER account with INSERT permission can execute a write that the guard normally rejects.
Make component_mcp require the named event_tracking_query.mcp_guard service, or add equivalent unload synchronization. Update the uninstall test and documentation because guard removal must fail while the endpoint is installed.

Define an unambiguous encoding for non-UTF-8 result bytes.
A reachable run_query call with SELECT X'FF' can copy byte 0xFF into a RapidJSON string without UTF-8 validation. The endpoint can therefore emit a response that a conforming JSON parser rejects. Define and document a tagged byte representation for every result cell whose bytes are not valid UTF-8. Do not return those bytes as plain JSON text.

…(review of #253)
CodeRabbit on 51203b0:
- (major, outside diff) component_mcp requires the guard's query consumer
(REQUIRES_SERVICE_IMPLEMENTATION event_tracking_query.mcp_guard) instead of
checking mcp.enabled: the server refuses to install it without the guard and
refuses to uninstall the guard while it is installed, so a call can never run
between a check and a guard unload.
- (major, outside diff) a cell whose bytes are not valid UTF-8 is returned as
{"base64": "..."}, so binary values never produce invalid JSON.
- (minor) the byte budget counts each row as serialized (escapes included), so
escaped values cannot push the HTTP reply past its limit (was an empty 500).
- (nitpick) the explicit LIMIT check asserts 1000 rows and truncation.
- test-mcp-endpoint.sh: 29 checks (guard cannot be uninstalled while the
endpoint is, base64 for X'FF', UTF-8 strings kept, escaped values bounded).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Pin component_mcp_guard (outside diff, major):component_mcp now requires the guard's query consumer (REQUIRES_SERVICE_IMPLEMENTATION_AS(event_tracking_query, mcp_guard, …)), replacing the mcp.enabled check. The server refuses to install it without the guard and refuses to uninstall the guard while it's installed, so no call can run between a check and an unload. Tests cover both refusals, and the guard uninstalls fine after the endpoint is removed.
Non-UTF-8 result bytes (outside diff, major): a cell is a JSON string when its bytes are valid UTF-8 (strict: no overlong forms, no surrogates, nothing past U+10FFFF). Otherwise it's {"base64": "…"}. This is documented in docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md. Tests: X'FF' gives {"base64":"/w=="}, and é stays a string.
Nitpick: the explicit-LIMIT check asserts 1000 rows and truncated.
