First Phase 5 item from #256: bounded row consumer.
Problem
The command service's default (DOM) consumer collects every row while a statement runs. sql_select_limit only bounds statements without their own LIMIT, so run_query with SELECT … LIMIT 1000000 or with wide rows buffered the whole result in mysqld before the reply was cut (CodeRabbit finding on #253).
Change
component_mcp provides its own mysql_text_consumer_row_factory_v1 and get_* services (….mcp) and selects them on each run_as() handle.
They pass rows on to the default ….mysql_server implementations (required with REQUIRES_SERVICE_IMPLEMENTATION_AS). So store_result / fetch_row work as before, until the statement has produced max_rows + 1 (1001) rows or 4 MiB of values.
After that, rows are dropped as they arrive. A row that crosses the byte budget is aborted in the DOM consumer, so it is never half stored. The result is then reported as truncated.
The budget lives in a thread_local, because the statement runs on the calling thread. Without a budget, the services pass everything on.
The statement still runs to its end. mcp.max_execution_time_ms bounds its time when set.
Tests
scripts/test-mcp-endpoint.sh on mysql:26.10.0: 37 passed, 0 failed (was 30).

an error raised after some rows, or past the bound, is reported as an error rather than a partial result (this exercises abort_row).
Docs: docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md (replaces the "known spike limit" note) and CHANGELOG.
Query results are limited to 1,001 rows or 4 MiB of estimated row and value data, including per-row and per-cell overhead. Additional rows are omitted, and the response indicates when results are truncated. Rows that exceed the remaining byte limit are not partially included.
Queries continue to completion unless an execution-time limit is configured. Errors are reported rather than returning partial results.
Documentation
Updated the MCP component guide with details about result limits, truncation, and execution behavior.
run_query sessions select the component's own text consumer row and value
services (mysql_text_consumer_*_v1.mcp). They pass rows on to the server's
default (DOM) consumer until the statement has produced max_rows + 1 rows or
4 MiB of values, then drop later rows as they arrive; a row that crosses the
byte budget is aborted in the DOM consumer. A large explicit LIMIT or wide
rows no longer buffer the whole result in mysqld.
test-mcp-endpoint.sh: peak RSS checks for LIMIT 1000000 (+0 MiB, was +144)
and 100 x 1 MB rows (+0 MiB, was +61), NULL-only rows, and errors raised
after some rows / past the bound. 37 checks.
Part of #256 (RFC 0001 Phase 5).

Walkthrough
component_mcp now bounds retained run_query results by row count and value bytes. It records truncation when rows are dropped. Endpoint checks cover wide rows, large result sets, NULL-heavy results, memory use, and query errors.

Summary
Bounded consumers and DOM delegation src/mcp/endpoint/component_mcp.cc
The component adds row and value consumers that delegate accepted values to the server’s default DOM consumers. The consumers account for row and cell overhead, retain at most 1,001 rows or 4 MiB of values, and do not retain a row that crosses the byte limit.
run_as configures the bounded consumers before connecting. It executes SQL through a fresh budget scope and records whether rows were dropped. The component registers the consumer services and requires the default DOM services.
Endpoint validation and documentation scripts/test-mcp-endpoint.sh, docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md, CHANGELOG.md
Endpoint checks cover truncation, peak RSS, NULL-heavy results, DOUBLE formatting, and errors before or beyond the row bound. Documentation and the changelog describe the limits and test coverage.
askdba/myvector#253: Adds the run_query path that this change extends with bounded consumers and endpoint checks.
askdba/myvector#252: Changes guard classification for component-created local sessions, including sessions opened through component_mcp’s run_as.

A rabbit counts the rows with care, And weighs each value in the air. When budgets fill, no row slips through, The query runs; the count stays true. Short doubles hop, long ones stay whole, Then errors reach the waiting console.

Count NULL cells in the retention budget
When run_query returns a wide result made mostly of NULLs, skip_value(0) never advances the byte counter, so the consumer can retain all 1001 rows regardless of the 4 MiB limit. The default consumer still needs per-column row structure, so a sufficiently wide projection can use substantial memory during query execution despite this bound; account for row/cell structure or impose a separate width limit.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 810ed90: the budget now counts a pointer per cell (NULL cells included) and the per-row list node and end pointer the DOM consumer keeps, so a wide all-NULL result is bounded by the same 4 MiB. New check: 2000 NULL columns over 5000 rows comes back bounded and truncated.

Update the check count in the Tests section.
Line 256 still says scripts/test-mcp-endpoint.sh has 30 checks. This PR adds checks, and CHANGELOG.md now states 37. The bullet list below Line 256 also omits the new bounded-result checks: wide rows, LIMIT 1000000, NULL-only results, and errors after or past the row bound. Change the count to 37. Add a bullet for the bounded-consumer checks.

Review of #257: NULL cells added nothing to the byte budget, so 1001 wide
all-NULL rows were retained whatever the 4 MiB bound. The budget now counts
what the DOM consumer keeps besides the values: a pointer per cell (NULL
included) and per row its list node and end pointer.
test-mcp-endpoint.sh: 2000 NULL columns over 5000 rows is bounded and
truncated (38 checks). docs: the Tests section lists the bound checks and no
longer carries a check count that each PR changes.

Addressed the outside-diff comment on docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md (Tests section) in 810ed90: it now lists the bound checks (wide rows, LIMIT 1000000, 2000 NULL columns, NULL-only rows, errors after or past the bound). I dropped the check count there instead of bumping it, because every Phase 5 PR changes it; CHANGELOG keeps the count (38).

Charge DOUBLE values by their formatted size.

Charge DOUBLE values by their formatted size.
bounded_get_double charges only 24 bytes before forwarding the value. MySQL 26.10 passes dec == 0 for DOUBLE(255,0) to my_fcvt, which stores the full fixed-point text. A value near DBL_MAX can require hundreds of bytes. Enough wide values can therefore exceed the intended 4 MiB bound. Charge the formatted length or a safe upper bound for my_fcvt, not 24 bytes.

Review comment at @src/mcp/endpoint/component_mcp.cc at line 296:
Update bounded_get_double so DOUBLE values consume budget according to their
formatted representation rather than the fixed kNumberBytes charge; establish
the required my_fcvt size from the value and decimals, or use a safe upper
bound, before forwarding through dom_get_double. Preserve the existing budget
rejection behavior so wide values cannot bypass the 4 MiB limit.
Check the consumer bound, not only the serialized reply.
Check the consumer bound, not only the serialized reply.
The reply builder applies a separate serialized-row byte check. With 2,000 NULL columns, it can set truncated:true before 1,000 rows even when the bounded consumer does not charge NULL cells. The current assertion accepts any 1–999 serialized rows with truncated:true, so it can pass in both cases. Add a consumer-level assertion for retained bytes or rows before serialization.

Review comment at @scripts/test-mcp-endpoint.sh at line 78:
Update the 2,000 NULL columns check to assert the bounded consumer’s retained
bytes or row count before serialization, rather than relying only on the
serialized `null_reply` and its `truncated:true` marker. Preserve the reply
assertion separately so it cannot pass solely because the reply builder’s byte
limit triggered truncation.

Review of #257:
- A DOUBLE with a fixed number of decimals is printed in full (my_fcvt),
up to FLOATING_POINT_BUFFER (350) bytes; the consumer charged 24. It now
charges 350.
- The NULL-columns check could not fail: the reply's own 4 MB cut comes
first either way. It is now a peak-RSS check with 8000 NULL columns, after
a warm-up with the same query at LIMIT 60 so that only retention past the
budget counts: +3 MiB, and +37 MiB with the previous accounting (fails).
39 checks.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
DOUBLE width (component_mcp.cc:296): valid. A DOUBLE with fixed decimals goes through my_fcvt and can take up to FLOATING_POINT_BUFFER (311 + 39 = 350) bytes. The consumer now charges 350, not 24.
Consumer-level check (test-mcp-endpoint.sh:78): valid. The reply's own 4 MB cut came first, so the check couldn't fail. It is now a peak-RSS check with 8000 NULL columns over LIMIT 5000. A warm-up with the same query at LIMIT 60 runs first, so only retention past the budget counts. Result: +3 MiB with this PR. A build with the previous accounting (NULL cells and row overhead uncounted) gives +37 MiB and fails.

Update the wide-row assertion in the test near the null_reply truncation check
to also verify that the response contains the n8000 field with a null value.
Keep the existing truncated:true assertion.
Review of #257 (d228de3): a flat 350 bytes per DOUBLE cut ordinary
results early (500 rows of 100 short DOUBLEs came back as 117 rows). The
budget now charges the length the DOM consumer will store, computed with
the same my_fcvt / my_gcvt calls.
test-mcp-endpoint.sh: 500 rows x 100 DOUBLE columns come back whole, a
DOUBLE(255,0) value of 251 digits is returned in full, and the 8000-NULL
check asserts a row is returned. 41 checks.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Also in 5fd03d8 (nitpick on test-mcp-endpoint.sh:85): the 8000-NULL check now asserts that a row with n8000: null is returned as well as truncated: true. Local run on mysql:26.10.0: 41 passed, 0 failed.

Review of #257 (5fd03d8):
- double_text_bytes() ran before the dropped-row check, so a large result
formatted every discarded DOUBLE once more. skip_value_sized() now takes
the size as a callable and runs it only for a value of a passed-on row
still within the budget; without a budget the value goes straight to the
DOM consumer.
- test-mcp-endpoint.sh: the 8000-NULL peak-RSS assertion runs right after
its query, before the DOUBLE queries can raise the cumulative peak.
