TraceSelect reports a UserError for missing or non-integer num_reps/sample_size, for a malformed -SEED, for a misspelled TraceSelect option, and for a compressed trace file. It checks all its arguments (and handles -h and --help) before sampling. It passes every argument that is not a TraceSelect option to Daikon rather than silently dropping some, and it keeps its state in local variables, so mainHelper can be called repeatedly. -SEED now takes effect, and a sample file left over from an earlier -NOCLEAN run is overwritten rather than partially overwritten.

New method DaikonGetopt.argsAfterLeadingOptions handles the -h and --help options that precede TraceSelect's other arguments. #888 adds the same method.

Add DaikonGetopt, a Getopt subclass that throws a UserError describing an
unrecognized, ambiguous, or malformed option and handles -h and --help.
Use it in Daikon and in the other tools that use Getopt.

Remove Diff's -u and -z options, which had no effect.

Report a UserError for missing or non-integer num_reps and sample_size and for
a malformed -SEED. Pass every argument that is not a TraceSelect option to
Daikon rather than silently dropping some. mainHelper resets its static state
on each call.

📝 Walkthrough

TraceSelect now validates its options and trace inputs, selects samples using per-call settings, and invokes Daikon and PrintInvariants directly. Daikon exposes its usage text and option reader. DtracePartitioner propagates I/O failures. Tests cover seeded sample repeatability and argument handling, and documentation describes the seed option.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 84324

Java 8 test runs can fail, and TraceSelect rejects some valid Daikon configuration filenames. Address those issues before merging; Daikon option validation also still changes persistent state.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 84324

The change is confined to local analysis tools. However, in-process invariant printing leaves output state shared with subsequent runs, weakening call isolation and failure containment. No new higher-privilege access path was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Moving PrintInvariants into the caller’s JVM allows its static output stream to outlive the TraceSelect operation. Successful printing closes the stream without resetting it, so later Daikon printing can target a closed stream and lose output. A failure after opening the output file bypasses stream cleanup, allowing subsequent printing to target the previous operation’s file. Daikon.cleanup does not restore this output ownership. The base subprocess contained this printer state; no cross-tenant deployment or exploit was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is the invoking JVM’s analysis state and files accessible to that process. In-process printing broadens shared output-state exposure to subsequent operations in the same JVM. The inspected path does not establish a remote entrypoint, tenant boundary, or additional privilege grant.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — TraceSelect supplies each sample’s serialization output path. A caller-supplied additional -o is rejected by Daikon’s duplicate-output check. This control does not isolate configuration changes or printer state between calls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Local TraceSelect settings improve sequential reuse, but global Daikon state and deterministic output paths do not establish concurrent-call isolation. Those limitations largely predate the PR; the newly shared printer stream is the supported regression. Process termination can bypass finally-based cleanup, and interruption recovery was not exercised.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give each printing operation explicit ownership of its output stream, with exception-safe closure and restoration of prior state. Separate argument validation from global configuration application, or document and enforce a serialized lifecycle for these stateful entrypoints.

… all arguments before sampling

- Pass the seeded Random to MultiRandSelector, so -SEED takes effect.
- Call Daikon.mainHelper and MultiDiff.mainHelper rather than main, so
TraceSelect.mainHelper never calls System.exit; clean up samples in finally.
- Validate the Daikon arguments (and -h/--help) with Daikon.read_options before
sampling, so a misspelled option is reported immediately.
- Require num_reps and sample_size to be positive.
- TraceSelect options must precede the Daikon arguments, as documented.
- Replace mutable static fields with locals and parameters.
- Document -SEED and the Diff exit-status change.

# Conflicts:

…variants, MultiDiff exit, simplify DaikonGetopt

- calcOut inserts the sample number into the file name, not a directory name.
- The pre-check uses the same Daikon command line as each sample, so -o is rejected before sampling.
- Run PrintInvariants in-process, so failures are reported.
- MultiDiff.mainHelper calls Diff.mainHelper, so it never calls System.exit.
- Daikon.cleanup() resets userDefinedInvariants; PrintInvariants resets its output stream.
- No array preallocation from num_reps; concise argument-error messages.
- Remove unused DaikonGetopt API; add DaikonGetopt.USAGE_HINT.

…n sampling

Factor the sampling out of TraceSelect.mainHelper into selectSample, so that it
can be tested without running Daikon. DtracePartitioner returns an empty string
for a trailing EXIT, which crashed TraceSelect on typical trace files.

Handle help before requiring a trace file.

If a user runs TraceSelect 1 1 --help, inputFile is null, so this check throws UserError before Daikon can print usage. The earlier option loop accepted help after the numeric arguments. Check for -h and --help in the TraceSelect option region before requiring a .dtrace file. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
