The runtimechecker instrumenter and WriteViolationFile use DaikonGetopt. The instrument command reports a bad option and its usage message rather than ignoring the option. A missing .doc usage file is reported as a bug rather than silently skipped.

DaikonGetopt gains argsAfterLeadingOptions (which #886 also adds), a constructor that computes the usage message only if it is needed, and setUsageHint. InstrumentHandler uses setUsageHint(null), because its caller prints the usage message when the command fails.

Add DaikonGetopt, a Getopt subclass that throws a UserError describing an
unrecognized, ambiguous, or malformed option and handles -h and --help.
Use it in Daikon and in the other tools that use Getopt.

Remove Diff's -u and -z options, which had no effect.

Walkthrough

DaikonGetopt now supports deferred usage text, leading-option parsing, and configurable bad-option hints. Runtime-checker commands use it to parse options and pass remaining arguments to handlers or target programs. The handlers now report argument and file errors through Daikon exceptions, and the command entry points delegate termination handling to Daikon.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b9ae8

The CLI remains mergeable. A missing target main method is reported, though its debug output loses the underlying exception.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b9ae8

Command-line execution remains narrowly scoped, and invalid options are rejected. The main concern is in-process recovery: an unsuccessful invocation can leave security-affecting options enabled for later instrumentation. Normal standalone execution exits after these failures, limiting exposure.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Main.nonStaticMain now permits recovery after command failure without restoring security-affecting option state. A caller that catches a failed invocation containing --make_all_fields_public and subsequently instruments another source can unintentionally generate public fields. The mutation predates this PR, but recovery through this entrypoint previously ended in System.exit. Standalone execution still exits, and embedded exposure is unconfirmed.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected sensitive outcomes are generated Java files, violations.txt in the working directory, and execution of a caller-selected program in the same JVM. Their effective authority is that of the invoking process. Evidence does not establish a remote or multi-tenant invocation path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A conditional recovery path exists: an invocation enables --make_all_fields_public, fails later argument validation, and its caller catches the exception. A subsequent invocation in the same JVM can inherit that flag and emit public fields without requesting the option. This is not a verified attacker path; normal static-main execution exits, and embedded callers are unconfirmed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Main still dispatches only to a registered handler that recognizes the command. WriteViolationFile still selects a class from caller arguments, requires a public static main method, and invokes it reflectively. Leading-option parsing does not reorder target arguments or add a new execution authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — WriteViolationFile retains its finally-based violation report after target invocation, including invocation exceptions. Target System.exit can bypass reporting, and report writes are not atomic. These limitations predate the PR; the new leading-option and class-validation paths occur before invocation and reporting.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If recoverable in-process use is supported, keep security-affecting options in per-invocation configuration and validate arguments before applying them. Otherwise, explicitly constrain recovery and reuse so callers do not assume failed commands leave configuration unchanged.

DaikonGetopt again provides nonOptionArgs, argsAfterLeadingOptions, a
Supplier-based constructor, and setUsageHint, which codespecs#885-codespecs#888 use.
The instrumenter's -h and --help handling belongs to codespecs#888.

…fy usage-message reading

Send WriteViolationFile errors to stderr, document -h/--help in Main.doc,
make "help" and -h produce identical output, and fix formatting.
readArguments throws UserError instead of returning a sentinel, and Main
throws UserError instead of calling System.exit when a handler fails.

….handle void; rename Main.fullUsageMessage; don't copy argv

WriteViolationFile.main now delegates to mainHelper, like other Daikon programs.
